I was awakened early this morning to some ligntning and thunder, and we did get a little bit of rain. How much, I can only guess, but I would think that it was not very much.

Yesterday I grabbed my camera, a telephoto lens and an extra roll of film and went train hunting. and this time my patience paid off! I got some spectacular shots of a BNSF grain train rolling through the yard with three C44-9Ws on the point, the train was northbound, and down off of 6th Street the Dakota & Iowa was waiting for the BNSF to clear the mainline so that they could start rolling southward to Sioux City, Iowa. There were more than 100 cars in each train.

I don't think I will be going anywhere today. I'm retaining too much fluid in my feet, and this I think is a result of too much sodium in my diet. My feet felt like they were cooking inside my shoes when I got home from our local BNSF yard yesterday afternoon

DisapproveLooks like no one was in here at all last night.  Disapprove  Now that I have everything cleaned up and thrown out, we can get ready for breakfast this morning.

The coffee is brewing, and there are fresh juices made, along with freshly brewed iced teas (sweet and unsweet) and hot water for our hot tea drinkers.

And you'll find bagels and bear claws on the counter.

Hi guys and gals.  Therapy took a lot out of me today.  I learned three new exercises, and was totally beat after I got home.  Took a two hour nap!!

Joe, you're welcome, and I now have late lunch/supper on the serving station:

It's Italian Day here in the Flat Wheel Cafe/Diner:

1.  Lasagna

2.  Italian spaghetti w/meat sauce

3.  Italian spaghetti w/meat balls

All three served with Italian bread sticks and garden salad

Everyone enjoy and have a terrific afternoon/evening.  Will try to get back in later.  Meanwhile, everyone take care!

Et al....the pictures are getting there a little.  They were inspecting them on Sunday at the depot and had the side panels off.  The panels were as black as the print on the forum.  But inside, they were yellow and fairly clean looking.

I read on the web that they inspect the "stones" every day.  That would make sense seeing the beating they take during grinding.  Guess it doesn't have to be pretty, just very good at what it does!

I know, it sure sounds like a broken record, but again, another beautiful morning here in central Indiana.  Clear skies, and lots of sunshine.  Beautiful blossoms still on display.  Moderate temps.

Today will be another mowing day....Tried out the new trimmer / edger and it will be a learning curve to get the best out of it.  Yesterday, saw it in another store here for 20 dollars less than I paid for ours....but, nothing I can do about that now.  I've started to use it.  20 dollars less in the same town.....Quite a bit.  So be it.  Price I did pay was equal to internet price, so thought that might be about it....But this time it was different.

Edit:  Walt, those rail grinding trains sure involve a lot of sophisticated machinery.....And probably people who really know what they are doing.

Sir C:  These are so clean looking next to the ones we have.  Both ends were yellow and in between was nothing but what looked like oily dirt.  As a mother, I wanted to take out a tissue, lick it and go rub a clean spot on one of them.

But, yeah - this be the kind.  So simple next to the Lorams we usually see.  I have yet to figure those out.  You said to stay way away from the Harsco - wonder if the people that live an inch beyond the row know that.  They were doing the area around the curve from where we sit (we were under the overpass and well away) up and down those tracks with houses on both sides.  Maybe I should sell insurance to these people....income supplement for me?  Mischief

Mook, was this more like what you wanted to "clean up"?! Smile,Wink, & Grin  Got this Harsco grinder at Osborn yard (CSX) in Jan. 07.

Good morning from Carolina. It's currently 57 and overcast, although no rain is forecast, at least, the last time I checked. Been feeling under the weather the past few days. Getting the taxes done helped me get that way,  but now I am on the improve. Time to hook up the wireless and see what's out there. Everyone take care

I missed a grinder in action up this way a couple of years ago.  Later heard the fruits of part of their labors, however, when a local fire department was dispatched to a fire they started.

I note that the PJ locomotive has firefighting apparatus affixed.  That begs the question of where they get the water to fill the tank car - it takes quite a while to get 10,000 out of a garden hose...

Nice day here today, if cool.  Probably ought to get out in the yard and clean up all the brush I cut the other day...

We had a resident fox a few years ago.  Think he was a laid-off yard master (?) He was hanging around between the yard and the depot.  Guess the new attraction here in the big city is wild turkey.  (glug)  We have had primo spring weather and no preds for turkey hatches and they like the city.  (They don't have to pay the high taxes!)

CW, I had finished cleaning up my yard the day before yesterday, and it was so dry here that by the time I had finished raking it and had filled the last paper waste bag, I felt like I'd been eating dirt. Blech!!

It's supposed to hit 72 degrees here today, and I think later this morning I will grab my camera and go train hunting. In the middle of last week I had a couple errands to run, and this took me up over the 10th street viaduct which spans our local BNSF yard. Just as I got there, a Dakota & Iowa train was coming in from the north with 4 engines on the point and about 110-120 loads of agregate or crushed rock. This train was headed for Sioux City, Iowa. And I didn't have my camera with me!Banged Head It would have made for one heck of a neat picture though. Maybe I'll score something this time around.

Good Wednesday morning, everyone.  Current temp in the mid to upper 50s, with 60 in some areas.  High today:  83 (which is what our high ended up being yesterday.

Saw on the news this morning, that the Derby officials started setting up the Chow Wagons for Thunder over Louisvillle yesterday.

Coffee, juices (orange juice, grape juice, orange/tangerine, pineapple, etc), the iced teas, and hot water for hot tea are all fresh and ready to go.

On the serving station this morning:  bagels, bear claws, and BLTs.

Parts for lawn mower came in yesterday, and Sarah got the grass cut.  (She takes care of the mowing and weeding, and does a very good job.)

Mudchicken, I like the pictures you posted.

Everyone have a good morning, and I'll see you all after I get back from therapy.

Mooks and Da chicken are going to have to soft pedal it around here for a while. Seems that Foxxy and her two kits have moved-in up the street under the front porch of the Denver K-9 cop. The Malinois and the retired German Shepherd there have got to be watching carefully. My 3 guyz (Da Boyz) alerted to their presence during their evening stroll. Rabbits suddenly got scarce.

Lotsa fun to watch 'em at night. Just stand well in the clear before one of those stones goes flying or you get burned by Speno droppings. (500 feet away is almost too close)

Still has the ex-L&N Alco slug in the consist? (used to have a satellite dish on top)

Methinks we now know where the bulk of the coal trains go!Wink....If you had a scanner, you could learn some new "choice" words from the dispatcherLaugh

Sir C - actually got to watch a few minutes of Harsco work.  How they grind and then lift the grinding wheels to go over the grade xing.  It was very interesting.  Easier to see than other forms of grinders.

Someone in the know down there said they have been working the southbound tracks for 2 days now.  (Those are the ones they seem to have the most trouble on!)

Produce went well this morning.  Truck came a little bit early this morning, but not quite as early as last Tuesday.  They delivered lettuce, onions, potatoes, yellow crook-neck squash, zuchinni, apples and fresh mushrooms.  Had 59 people show up, and there was no food left today, to give to the people who would be coming in for their Dare to Care food boxes.

I've got our regular Tuesday Mexican Fiesta on the serving station:

Burritos (beef, beef & bean, beef burrito deluxe), Tacos (hard shell & soft shell), Chimichangas, Fajitas (beef and chicken), Spanish rice, along with several other Mexican dishes.

Even though we started out this morning, with a temp of 60 degrees, by the time I left the house at 7:58, the temp had dropped to 54 degrees.  We don't usually see a 6 degree drop temp wise in the mornings after sunrise.  I'm glad I went ahead and put on a lightweight sweat jacket.

Hope you all enjoy your afternoon, and I'll be checking in periodically this afternoon.  Take care, everyone!

We had a beautiful morning yeserday, with the temperature about fifty. Yesterday the weatherliars predicted much colder, with rain out in the valley, light snow on the benches, and much snow in the mountains. This morning: thirty-five--and snow on the ground in mid-valley. I haven't heard or seen any report on snow quantity on the benches or in the mountains. It's bright and sunny now.

Good Tuesday morning, everyone.  We have a current temp of 60 degrees, going for a high of 80 today.  It's going to be a nice morning for Tuesday Produce.

Larry, I'm so sorry to hear about the firefighter.  My sincere condolences to his family (personal and firefighter family.

Coffee, juices, teas (iced, sweet, unsweet) are fresh and ready to go.  Got hot water ready for our hot tea drinkers.

On the serving station this morning:  bagels, bear claws, bacon ,sausage, eggs, biscuits & gravy.

Well, Sarah went back to work last night cubbing.  Guess she'll be home around 8 this morning.

Dan, yeah, some ladies will be putting their fancy hats on in a couple of weeks.  And, of course, we'll see the mens' hats, the funny hats (you know, the ones with the tubes coming out of them, so they  can drink their beer or whatever).

Everyone have a great morning, and I'll see you all after Produce, and in between exercise rounds.

Larry, looks like what happened was a leak in the steel shell of the silo, allowing oxygen into the silage inside, causing rapid fermentation (and a lot of heat).  Might have gotten hot enough for the silage to spontaneously combust, and it was possibly a backdraft situation that caused the explosion.  I do remember from a barn fire about 10 years ago, the fire department was quick to seal up any cracks in the walls, to keep oxygen out.  Silos are still standing, though the farmer did not rebuild the barn.  I'm not an expert on this, just my opinions and theories.....

Usually, the big problems with silos are the gases put off by fermentation, which are deadly.  Back when dad farmed, when we were filling silo, and needed to throw some down to feed cows, we fired up the silo blower about half speed to provide airflow.  Only had to do this with standard concrete stave silos, the Harvestores were bottom unloading only.

Anyway, got to Waddy, KY today, though now I'll have to find a tire shop in the morning, picked up a bolt in a drive tire, not leaking yet, though.  No big deal.

Well, off to bed, see everyone later.....
