EVERYBODY!!!! Thanks So Much for All the Great Birthday Wishes!!! It's been a really great day!
Wish the weather could have been better,it was 'warm',but overcast and semi-breezy......................
Train Watching Could Not Have Been Better!!! The NS in particular is really jumping because of
the "Inspection Train" due through here tomorrow. For this area,it's due to leave Danville,Ky. around
9:00 a.m. and go through here between 11:00a.m. & 1:00p.m.tomorrow on it's way to Kansas City.

Ok, I just have to post this. One of our local meteorlogists issued his winter forecast for Omaha this evening. Let me compare his forecast to the other one from our other local meteorologist that I posted a few days ago. These guys are a total riot!
1st forecaster: December: 1.5 inches, January: 3 inches, February: 7 inches, March: 11 inches, Entire winter: 3 inches below normal.
2nd forecaster: December: Much above normal, January: Normal, February: Normal, March: Much above normal, Entire winter: 6 inches above normal.
I think this proves that our meteorologists have no idea what the weather is going to do. I'm thinking that the first one is going to be right with his slightly below normal forecast. 6 inches above normal for the winter seems rather absurd considering that this is an El Nino winter, but I'll re-evaluate that at the end of December.
Just thought I'd post this for the laughs.

I thought I'd go ahead a post a couple of today's pictures anyway.
I had caught this engine earlier, out in the east end of the county with a short train of auto racks waiting
in a passing siding. Now,about 6:30 pm,he's making a "light" move to the 'house at Youngstown yard,
after dropping off that cut.(When I first saw him,he was cab first, now he's running long hood first;looks
like got got turned somewhere in the process.)
Brian: Very close to our Mookie. Your's looks to have better hair - Mook was short on back and body and that length underneath. I always said she was a hybrid.
Walt - I'll take that cute one with the striped nose.
Willy - go with Jim Flowers - he is usually right more often than anyone else!

Way back when, one of the Detroit stations had a weatherman named Sonny Elliot. He had one bit of business that may not have been uniquely his, but made him unique. This was in the days before fancy electronic graphics, so his weather map was drawn on a large chalk board shaped like the state of Michigan.
After he finished pointing out highs, lows, and fronts, he would take two words that applied to the days's weather, say it would be frosty in the morning with light rain in the afternoon, and combine them - in this case, it might be "frizzly" - and would write that across the map.
The Keweenaw Peninsula (the "thumb" of the northern peninsula of MI) was held on by a magnet, sticking out of the top of the board. If Houghton had the low for the day for the state (which it often did), he would take the "peninsula" off the board and point to it....

Jim Flowers was the one who forecasted the above average snowfall, which is what I would like, but I'm not sure that I buy that solution. Also, I think Jim Flowers is a little bit full of himself. I think we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Well, are a few pictures of the NS "Special". It rolled through here about 12:00p.m.today,being led
by a (looks like) freshly washed GP 38-2, and two more units, coach, full length dome car, and
the" inspection car". It seemed to be moving at about 30 mph. CW & I got plenty of waves
from the gents on board.
The first two pictures are a little bit light, I was having to shoot into the sun
(eastbound)
NICE pictures, Mutt. Were you shooting with a digital format camera??

....As Jen mentions the Ft. Wayne clear channel station WOWO and the world famous fire escape....I'm trying to think of the elderly announcer who use to be on that station...I just recently have turned to that station occasionally but generally haven't tuned to it much in the last 20 years...I suppose because it's AM.
Know one thing, it can be heard from great distances at night. Heard it in Florida years ago.
One more thing on radio....Jen, years ago, as a youngster...I had a station from Kearny, NE on a crystal set...That is a small device with no battery, and just a coil of wire and a few things connected to it.....That was from Pennsylvania. And it was the only station I ever heard on it.
Great Pictures there, LM!!Not often you get to see one of those "Specials" go through..

Good morning everyone! The coffee is ready and I've mixed up a fresh batch of orange juice and I've got the hot chocolate out. Breakfast this morning will consist of oatmeal, scramble eggs, bacon, sausage, blueberry pancakes and banana nut muffins, and cinnamon coffee cake.
I woke up about a half an hour ago and we have just a trace of snow on the ground here in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The temperature here is at 32 degrees and our maximum high today will be around 44. I will be off to a job interview with Sam's Club at noon.

Bob sievers was the gentlemans name.i grew up listening to the station because thats when the still played music back in the 70s.I can also recall how sometimes hed give the weather reports for ships at sea as far as hurricanes too.I guess thats why I'm an early bird sometimes.that 5 am rooster in "the little red barn" was neat too.I dont listen to wowo anymore because its all talk radio now.
going to go chat with matts teacher then we are going to be off to find some trains.tommorow our weather goes downhill.have a great friday.
Coffee, and lots of it. And real cream, none of that powered stuff.
Thanks in advance.
Mookie wrote: Q - I used to listen to KOMA in OK City - at nite it came in a lot clearer than the Nebraska stations. Texas was what usually came in the best in the late nite for us, followed by Chicago and even one from New Mexico. I had forgotten about those great memories - probably because by 7:30 or 8 pm I am in the land of nod and not listening to the radio! Jen
KOMA - Used to listen to that when I was in OKC! Their DJs were always doing live shows (dances, IIRC) in Colorado, where they apparently had a big listener base. The OKC TV stations had the tallest transmitter towers I've seen.
re: Skip - My father told us that one year, while riding patrol (he was a reserve police officer) on New Years Eve, he listened to the new year come in in each time zone...
.....Joe: You are so right....Bob Sievers....That is the name I was trying to relate to and "The Little Red Barn", yes had forgot about that. Thanks for the answer.
I agree with your comment of now it being all "talk radio"....I don't understand why a station would go to a total format of such....They alienate roughly half of the audience out there.
Anyway, the comments here on radio does bring back some memories of evening and late night radio...Especially the "clear channel" 50,000 watt stations. When I was coming across the Pacific Ocean on a troop ship many years ago the first contact with the good ole USA was a 50,000 watt {can't think of the call letters right now}, from Des Moines, Ia...It made a lasting impression on me...just such a small happening....but that was over 50 years ago and it still sticks in my mind.
My home was not too far from the first commerical radio station on the air in the USA...KDKA, Pittsburgh, another "clear channel" station that could be heard from great distances at night. And one of their announcers from way back in time...Ed Shauncey...{sp ?}, comes to mind. Just my
Morning All,
Well, got my new toy yesterday. The UPS man delivered my new Pentax K100D kit, plus the DA 21mm f3.2 (a lens that I believe I'm head over heels in love with after only one day). Decided to try it out last night down by Union Station. Alas! the "Union Station" sign is not being turned on at night currently due to roof work, or something to that effect. Oh well, guess the picture came out OK anyhow:
I'll be taking the Pentax stuff on my next trip to IL, and I'll post some thoughts on it when I get back (at which time I'll be selling off the Canon stuff if I like the Pentax stuff enough).
Meanwhile, speaking of IL, has anyone seen Carl lately? Haven't seen him in the diner for awhile.
Well, must be on my way. Hope you all have a great day!
