Well, it's Monday.  How can I tell?  It's nice and sunny outside - hardly a cloud in the sky.  As opposed to the weekend...Angry [:(!]  I can't tell you how enjoyable it is to flag a crossing during a light, misty drizzle...  Then again, I was playing on the railroad...  Those poor folks we picked up after their trip down the river - they didn't get wet paddling down, they got wet in the downpour that was occuring just as we arrived at the canoe platform to pick them up...

Bearclaw and an orange-and-spice tea, please.

We did have a great weekend - over 200 riders both days.  Got to meet the current owner of one of the former stations (I usually mention how nice it looks when I'm narrating - they were impressed...) as well as a woman who used to ride the train on the line to a big summer camp.  She even warranted an interview, as that information will be going into the narrative resource book.

I was mildly surprised, however, to learn that our Wednesday "robbery" trains will draw 200+ per train.  Whodathunk!?

Morning All,

Dropped my guest off yesterday at DIA, so once again, I should have a little free time to visit the forum and contribute here and there (not that my posts are anything but bandwidth eating banter...but I digress).

Can't stay too long in the DD&CS to read the previous posts at the moment, so I hope you are all well. I'll be sure to do some catching up on lunch and this evening.

I hope you all have a great week, and I'll talk to you later!

TTFN!

Morning all!  I'll have some OJ and a bowl of Shredded Wheat w/skim milk, then it's off to the "to-do (been put off way too long!) list".  I can't believe that college starts back up again in about two weeks!  All things considered I only have two semesters to go until I hit the wall smack under the light at the end of the tunnel!  LOL!  It will be nice to be done.

Yes I know who Superman and The Lone Ranger are/were.  I'm not that naive, just a smart-aleck!

Hope everyone is having a nice Monday.  Glad everyone enjoyed their breakfast
this morning.  Now, let's see. . . .what to have for lunch today.

There's BLTs w/fries and slaw or salad, and there's still some Italian spaghetti
left and garlic bread left, so we'll clean that up, o.k?

And does anyone have any requests for supper/dinner tonight?

Hmmm...I'm trying to update my avatar, and I looked at my personal information on the site.  According to this, I last visited the Forum tomorrow!

If that keeps happening, I guess I'll be stuck for life, and live a long time!

Doesn't help, Larry--still says I last visited here on August 22.

Too bad my stock report doesn't do this, too...

You know what we oughta start sometimes, specially on Sundays? a breakfast buffet! MmmMmmM!   Just a thoughtBig Smile [:D]
I will have frosted mini wheats with 2% milk if you have it...don't have that much of an appetite today. Oh yeah and coffee. Too early for a Pepsi

I jusit thought of a dumb question last night. so here goes.
I was looking at RP.net last night and I saw lots of BNSF trains. They were beautiful trains, but I saw in the foot notes, "high priority Z Train making it's way eastbound" or "another N train going westbound" or something like that. so...what is a "Z" train? is it another name for "merchandise train" cause I think I have an idea of what those are. Where I used to live in Flagstaff, they would travel westbound towards Los Angelos. Mostly it would either be a piggyback train or the doublestack trains

So there's my dumb question for the day

I was also reading the pages of the Depot Diner last night out of sheer boredom, I fell in love with a couple of goofy people, can't remember their names off the top of my head now, and I saw one of my favorite restaurants geting props, (the Crown Railroad cafe) So mostly that was what I was up to

On the UP, a Z train is the hottest of the hot--a "premium intermodal" train.  The train carries an alphanumeric designation like ZLACS, or several other combinations of letters (the other letters indicate origin and destination--in this example, the train runs from Los Angeles to the Canal Street intermodal facility in Chicago).

BNSF also uses Z for its hottest intermodal freights, but I think it uses three-letter origins and destinations, and maybe a few other modifiers besides.

So, besides the cat (whom everybody loves), what other goofy people (or animals) floated your boat?

We had pizza last night in a fairly new local establishment--I found that the trains are visible from certain tables (one of which I gladly claimed).  We shared the place with a group of Red Hat ladies, who fit the stereotype, except for one, who was too young--reminded me of my favorite sister-in-law (who's also too young, but definitely has the attitude!).

vsmith, I always love his silly sense of humor, and something about that trolley in his sig makes me giggle too. He's just a silly guy
Mudchicken, I remember looking at pages, and people teasing him, Mudchicken and dumplings....(ewwww)
Junctionfan, he's the local nut of the pack who is here on a regular basis, as far as I noticed anyway
and tree....He seems a versitile kind of guy.

Then again I am easily amused, so it just may be me as well

Speaking of chicken - broasted, toasted and fried - where is Mudchicken?  He flew out of town and no one has seen him since!

NT - if you want a good name - you should find out where Zardoz got his name.  Fascinating story! You may have to e-mail him to get him to tell you the story.

Shippers pay a premium to put their trailers or containers on a Z train because of what are supposed to be faster schedules.

I have my own favorites, former favorites, and least favorite people here--for various reasons--but we won't go into that.  Your choices, in my opinion, are great, as long as you include the kitten, too!

Speaking of favorites, look who just came in!

Sarah, it's good to see you made it in for lunch today!

NT, you picked some good people to have on your list.  Who else do you find
interesting, lurking here in the DD/CS? We have a lot of very interesting people
who come in, who are very nice people.  Speaking of nice, fun people, anyone
heard from Dan Harmon lately?!?!?!  Or is he "out to sea" again?

Mookie, been wondering myself, where Mr. Mudchicken has been lately.  Guess
he's too busy to get a chance to drop in and see us.

Today's BLUE PLATE SPECIALS will be:

1.  roast, taters, carrots, mashed taters/gravy and mixed veggies

2.  fried chicken, mashed taters, milk gravy, with mixed veggies

Take your pick, or take a little bit of both specials, if you like.

Carl,

If you've got this whole time travel thing down, can you do me a favor and let me know who to pick in my Fantasy Football draft next week? That could be really handy!

So after I dropped my friend at the airport yesterday, I came home, and set about cleaning the house up a bit. As I was doing that, I noticed a nice Supercell building up a little east of town. A cousin of mine came over, and I asked him if he had heard anything about a bad storm out east. He hadn't, and so I just passed it off as another HP (high precipitation) monsoon driven thing that would drop several inches of rain, and maybe even some hail, but not much else.

Lo and behold, about 20 minutes later there's a tornado warning issued for Bennett, and Central Adams county. Doh! Had I trusted my instincts, I'd have been out chasing the storm and encountered a really photogenic land-spout. And since there were no injuries or property damage, I would've been free to feel elated about catching the thing. Sigh.......one of these days I'll actually find and photograph one.

Of course, I have the same luck as Tree and Zardoz. It's a rare occasion when I can find trains, good weather and free time anymore. Oh well...I guess if it were easy, it wouldn't be as much fun, right?

Thought I picked up that the Mudchicken was in the field on the job showing people how to get it done right.  Possibly the temporary resting spot is stuck in the 20th Century with dial up only or worse is charging an outrageous fee for access to a high speed connection.

The access fee at the Sheraton on the North side of Indy was $12.00 a day.  I'd rather get it free for the price of a cup of fancy coffee.

$12.00 a day? Shock [:O] Yikes! Along with the coffee shops, I've found that many public libraries out here offer free wireless, too. It's a beautiful thing in Jefferson County, too. All of JeffCo's branches offer high speed internet on their computers for increments of 15 min. at a time for non-Library Card Holders. They also offer free wireless for unlimited time. All one needs is a wireless capable laptop...schweeet!

Just turn your wireless computer on and see if you get a signal.  A lot of people set up a wireless network at home, on their high-speed connection, but don't bother to lock it down.  Free wireless for the world - my daughter found a hot spot at the private residence where she works, and they don't have wireless there...  There's even a set of symbols for it - a la hobo markings of years gone by...

The company that uses the "hot" intermodal trains the most is United Parcel Service--these trains are usually trailers mounted on spline cars with all the latest in "hot" power such as GE Dash 9-44CW units (usually 3-4 locomotives on the point). These trains run with near-passenger train priority.

WHOO! thanks! I feel better now that I learned something. Thanks for learning a beginner in the jargon.

Tree, you do try, at least you don't overdo your efforts, thats why I like yaApprove [^]

I saw some of the posts that left me in tears from laughing so hard. so it's all good

CW- Mutt, Jim, and Mookie were funny as well. I usually like to be around the people who are....fun....for lack of a better term. I been here under a month and most of the people on this forum are a little stale. So coming into the Diner is a refreshing way of saying, yeah there are people around here that remember how to have fun with life.

I like my name, so I think I'll keep it. Thanks for the offer though Mookie.

I had Goolosh for dinner...so I think I will see if we have some chocolate cake....just one slice, I promise I won't eat it all.Smile [:)]
