Evening All,

Well, haven't had anyone run into me while in awhile, so I thought I'd try it again tonight. Was headed to take care of my pups. When I slowed to turn into the driveway, apparently the guy behind me thought that I was obstructing traffic, and proceeded to cruise onto the shoulder on my right side just as I was beginning to make my turn. Doh!

It was a 16 year old kid who thought that I was absolutely terribly at fault to even think about making a turn there. Thankfully, his dad was in the car with him, and he was cool and calm about it. Waited for the state patrol to show up (it was in Unincorporated Adams Co.). Filed a report, kid got ticketed, called the insurance folks and all should be well soon enough I guess. The cruiser has some damage, but nothing that will keep her from operating. And thankfully, it was just a little fender bender, so there were no injuries.

Anyways, I must be off to bed, as I still plan to head up Bierstadt tomorrow. Will probably drop in here tomorrow afternoon. Hope you all have a great evening, and remember to watch for the other guy!

Hello all......

Chris, know how you feel, my mom had the same thing happen to her as she was turning her van left into her drive, someone tried passing on the left (across a double yellow line on top of it).  Left front sheetmetal got a little crinkled, guess the car that hit her suffered worse.  I get a little worried when someone tries tailgating me, if I hit the hooks, they're going underneath me.  Kinda had that in mind when I purchased my Dodge Ram 3/4 ton diesel pickup (four wheel drive models sit four inches higher than the 2wd cousins.).  Of course, the way people drive here in Madison (badly), it might be a matter of time.

Well, a gent named Jamie Gold from Malibu won the main event at the World Series of Poker this year, he takes home twelve million dollars for his efforts.  His dad has Lou Gerings disease, so it sounds like the money will be put to good use.

Jay, I DID wash my hands before coming in, and many times while here, but this sucker is persistant, I think it might be the flu, but not sure.  All I know is that this sucks, and I can't figure out where I picked it up from.  Anyway, picked up some more Dayquil and Alka-seltzer nighttime from Walgreens, hopefully that will knock it out of me.

Right now it's 60 degrees outside, headed down to a low of around 52, first cool night in a while, will enjoy it as much as I can, tomorrow it will be 80, and dry.  Thanks for the fish, CW, donned the latex gloves and surgical mask while I was heating it up, don't want to give this to anyone (that I like, anyway!).

See everyone later.

Chris: Sorry to hear that Adams County got another one. Two of our company trucks have been attacked so far this year (both were backed-into) up there. Compared to the 16 cars up in Larimer County that tangled in the dust storm on US-85, you got off light. How may body panels are affected?

Brian & Dan, I'll mention both of you, and ask that you
each take at least two slices of a couple of the pizzas
you see on the warmer bar!!  Looks like they've barely
been touched tonight!!  Getting ready to turn the controls
off on the warmer bar, and the pizzas will be going into
the fridge.  Anybody who comes in later, will have to go
to the fridge, to get some pizza to eat!!

And just so you both know, you are both good for good
conversation, as well as your eating abilities.Smile [:)]Approve [^]

Another day on the railroad.  Aside from the guy who felled a tree onto the track in front of us, we didn't have any problems (he immediately discovered his mistake and moved that part of the tree that was obstructing us).  The crews are responsible for cleaning the cars at the end of the day, so it was with some chagrin that I discovered that I'd forgotten to put a new "chad catcher" (really just some tape) on my ticket punch.  Not bad if you're only punching each ticket once, but I do a "smiley face" on the kids tickets (they've seen Polar Express and expect more now), so I can create a blizzard when a family has several kids along...  Took care of that before the second run.

One of the "features" we offer at the Adirondack is to haul you and your bike on our morning run.  When we get to the far end of our trip, we put you off and you pedal your way back to town - probably 8-10 miles through the woods on marked trails.  Had my first two such riders today.  We also participate with a local canoe rental - paddle down the river and we haul you back.  We had well over a dozen canoes and kayaks today.  Good thing we had a big crew.

Did I see some Hawiian (ham and pineapple) on the pizza warmer?

I think I'll have some of that Hawaiian. That sounds mighty good!

So I did get up, and made a succesful hike up to the top of Bierstadt. Lo and behold, guess what I found above 14,000 feet? I was actually snowed upon! (Shock [:O] Did he just utter the "s" word?). OK, so it wasn't a blizzard or anything like that, but the air temp was cold enough (I'm guessing low 40's, or perhaps upper 30's) to have a little snow mixed in with the rainy mist that we had for most of the day.

Unfortunately, somebody did forget to wear his sunscreen. Yes, even on a cloudy day @ 14,000 feet, it's possible to burned, especially when one is as light skinned as yours truly. It wasn't too bad though.

It's been about two years since I've been up a 14er, and I've forgotten just how interesting those last 500 vertical feet are (especially when one hasn't been at that altitude for awhile). While Bierstadt is very much a walk-up, it does get a little vertical, too. Nominally, it's 3.1 miles with 2800 feet of elevation gain (a 17% average grade...not too bad). Of course, if you look at the mountain profile:

you'll note that one actually descends slightly for the first mile or so, and thereafter climbs back up. Thus the average grade after the trip through the valley is more in the neighborhood of 26%. Bits and pieces have to be getting up around the 40% mark. Couple that with less and less oxygen (about 60% of sea level values up around the top), and it makes for a long 7 miles.

So, even though it's an easy 14er, it's still a hike I'm fairly proud of. Hmmm...isn't that just an oxymoron, too. "Easy 14er." Right up there with "Jumbo Shrimp." "Pretty Ugly," and my personal favorite: "Microsoft Works."

At any rate, gald to be back, and it's always nice to come back to some excellent Hawaiian Pizza. Thanks CW!

P.S. MC, the guy banged up the front right fender and the front passenger door. They're both bad enough that the body shop can't hammer them back into shape, so it'll mean getting a new version of each, which could be a bit costly. The gent's insurance agent should be coming on Mon. or Tues., so I'll find out then.

It's interesting that you had issues up north. At work, most of our accidents occur in Larimer, Weld or Boulder counties. That's especially wild when one considers how much work we do in the DTC, and down Castle Rock way. Think I'll start letting friends drive when we head up north!

I'll make off with three slices of Supreme, thank you, and a couple of slices of Hawaiian as well for Joanie, she loves that stuff.

Chris, does the cog railway still run up Pike's Peak?  That's probably the only way I'll get above 14K, either that or drive up it or Mt. Evans...

Well CW,

I didn't get to make it in tonight for pizza and I am sorry. My wife's work had that "end of summer bash" at the Cincinnati Westin I was telling you all about.

Needless to say, she had to drive home. We each got 3 free drink tickets and with her not being able to consume "drinks" right now, I ended up getting six free drinks. The couple that was with us did their fair share of "drinks" as well. The wife made a fine DD tonight for us all.

But anyway, if there's any left over Goetta pizza, I'll take some. May need some aspirin as well to go with it. They always say pizza's are good the next morning for hangovers.

Hope everyone has had a great weekend so far.

Yes it does. Would you believe that I've never been up it either? Come to think of it, I've never been at the top of Pikes or Evans. It was interesting to hear some of the comments on top of Bierstadt while people looked at the drivers going up Evans (Bierstadt is right next to Evans). They ranged from "Why did we do it the hard way?" to "They'll never know what they're missing."

Personally, I can understand both of those extremes, and probably fall somewhere in the middle. I still have to decide if I drive those two, or take the Cog Rail up Pike's if it'll count towards completing my 14er quest. Some folks have some really silly rules (For example, some won't consider getting both Gray's and Torrey's if you do them together...to me that's just silly). Right now, I'm thinking that I make it to some starting point on a mountain with a vehicle, whether that point is 7+ miles away, or a few hundred feet away. This probably doesn't matter too much for Evans, as it wouldn't be too hard to climb it sort of via the Bierstadt route. However, Pike's is a two day endeavour by foot. I'm not sure I'm ready to commit to that if I can get on a train, and take it to the top.

I guess when I've bagged the other 52 non-drive-ups, I'll have to figure out if I want to get the other two the hard way or not. Since I've only got 7 of the 54 so far, I think I've got some time to figure it out!

That pizza was good last night.  I'll steal some from the fridge this morning for my favorite breakfast!

I'm going to head to FDL and NE/MEN to railfan today as (drumroll and sit down)...I ACTUALLY HAVE A WHOLE 24 HOURS OFF!  On purpose even!  I thought I read the schedule wrong at first but I'll take it.  This is my 4th day off since May.

I started training some clients in the Y's weightroom yesterday (I'm also a Personal Trainer) after my 8.5 hour shift watching over the pool.  No rescues yesterday so that was a nice change of pace.  I'm on track to hit 150 career rescues by the end of the month.  For mainly indoor pools that's quite a bit.  Well I'll be back later...have a great day!

CW - Dinner sounds really good! I'll be in later this afternoon!

There was supposed to be severe weather this afternoon, but there are clouds and showers this morning that will limit instability and probably put an end to our severe weather chanecs and maybe even the thunderstorm chances.

Everyone, have a good Sunday!
