I had an old ex office PC and it appears the video card died, (changed monitors with no result). I took the opportunity to get a new laptop, and downgrade the older laptop.

A bit later, a friend had a monitor failure on his Macintosh G3. Hmm, I thought, I wonder if my newly spare monitor will work on a Mac. Yes is the answer, and in exchange I was loaned an external floppy drive to try on the laptop - it hasn't got a floppy, instead seven types of flash cards will work (including the CF cards on my Canon cameras).

And what, exactly, are you quitting?

I have a cat named Toby (short hair tabby). Never talks unless we go to the vet. He's 7 years old and managed the move well.

Light snow in WI. Very pretty.

Dog and Cat story: We were visiting my mother and had our Siamese along. The dog had been tormented by the cat, who as techguy57 said, usually took the high ground and teased the poor dog (a cocker spaniel).

Turnabout, as they say, is fair play. For some reason the dog was sitting on the organ stool. The cat strolled by, totally unaware of the "danger" lurking above. The dog pounced, the cat ran. I'm positive that dog was gloating!

Deer are winning here too. In fact I heard that Barrington and South Barrington (very nice, upscale nearby villages) are considering opening certain areas to hunters one day this winter in order to reduce the deer population. I know Brown County in Indiana has done something similar as well. Unfortunately, it seems the deer problem is only getting worse. Really it is a simple equation:

Urban Sprawl = Reduced Wilderness = More Animals In Less Space = Animals Forced To Find Food Elsewhere

We've had a doe and her three young ones forraging through the yards of our neighborhood for almost a year now. In the spring I'd often find them sleeping in our front yard when I took the dog out at 4am. Been as close to them as eight or ten feet when they were eating from the neighbor's bird feeder. The are awfully tame.

Even more troublesome are the coyote attacks happening in Mundelein, especially since it is pretty well developed and what wilderness is around is mostly parkland. Half a dozen reports of pets killed or missing in the last couple of months and its happening in people's backyards.

On a lighter note, got to tell you a funny pet story. We have a beagle,Dash (as in Dash-9) almost a year old and a kitty,Peanut (as in way better than plain M&Ms) thats almost 14yrs old. Dash loves to "investigate" the kitty and often does so by chasing her around the bedroom. She may be older but she's smarter and more agile so she often outraces him and finds a safe spot he can't get to where she promptly taunts him by meowing and pawing at him. Such was the case this morning as I was getting ready to jump in the shower when thay both came running full steam into the bathroom. Not wanting to get cornered Peanut leapt up to make her way to the top of the toilet tank and aparently misjudged because her whole back in went right into the bowl. [oops] Needless to say she was not real receptive when Dash offered to help clean her off. She got her laughs too because Dash shorted his jump onto the ottoman this morning. Looked like something out of a Scooby-Doo cartoon.

Is it lunchtime yet? How about some ravioli and garlic bread?

Look at it this way.....Free parts, slightly used, located immediately by the roadside for your convenience - Enquire about availability from the nearby cra***est dummy and former SUV owner.

Plenty of folks had their Thanksgiving holiday spoiled in Western Nebraska and Western Kansas over the weekend. (including a semi vs. Greyhound bus in KS on I-70 yesterday)..... Winter is here! Majority of wrecked SUV's I saw were Toyota 4-Runners and Ford Explorers (Exploders) followed by empty pick-up trucks (no weight in the back and poor tires) plus gaggles of little light cars (Ford Mustangs & Chevy Camaros take the cake)...... 4WD does not imply 4 Wheel Stop!
Mudchicken Nothing is worth taking the risk of losing a life over. Come home tonight in the same condition that you left home this morning in. Safety begins with ME.... cinscocom-west

Allbeit, this is not quite as good as Larry's with the Siamese: but,
back in about 1978, we had one of our large snowfalls. I
had a very large (about 18 #) cats, who enjoyed being outside
when the ground was dry. I was outside and he was on the front
porch with me. He kept sniffing at and looking like he wanted to
check out the snow. So I grabbed him around the middle, and
tossed him toward a snowbank.
To this day, I don't belive he touched the snow. He whirled around
in mid air and landed back on the porch.[:D]

We, in the mighty winter state on MN, had more rollovers last week with a dusting of snow and rain than I thought possible. People aren't told that yes, the 4 by 4 will get you started faster, but you can't stop any better on ice than that 72' Gremlin!

There have been a rash of "rollovers" in SUVs around here also;mainly due to
crazy drivers.
Now as far as the deer problem goes;Ky. Dept. of Fish & Wildlife is thinking
about adding a new twist to deer season; bow -rifle-shotgun;and now
SUV season. One of the local body shops commented the other day, since
the start of 'fall',their business has about tripled due to the number of
deer/vechile accidents.[:D]

Ah, yes. The famous "I'm driving a big 4 wheel drive truck so I can drive through this stuff like it's not here" ploy. Gets them every time. Same for SUVs. We've had a tremendous amount of rollovers this year during slippery conditions- a proven characteristic of SUVs.
