Larry,

If it wasn't literally a 15 second commute to work (I live right next door to my place of employment), you can be assured that I would have had some more layers on. Once upon a time while climbing Long's Peak, I started getting a little too close to hypothermia. We started on the trail about 1 AM, and the thing about hiking in the Rockies (and I imagine most mountainous areas) at 1 AM is that it's COLD! (even in summer).

I had a lot of layers on, but I didn't really have anything that could block the wind, which was pretty strong above timberline. I finally decided to take a rest on the leeward side of a big rock. When I quit moving, and generating heat, I started to violentley shiver. And then I stopped shivering (this is a bad sign). It was hard for me to get motivated to get going again, but once I did, I started generating heat again, and did OK, especially once the sun came up at the Boulder Field.

Looking back at it, I didn't fully realize what was going on, but thankfully I knew a little about Hypothermia, and knew that when I stopped shivering it was actually a bad sign, and not a good one. That scared me a little, and when you find me on the trail now, you can rest assured that I've always got one more layer than I think I'll need, and always make sure I have some sort of windbreaker with me (and I've found that the rain gear that I carry serves well for this purpose...too bad I didn't think of that on Long's!)

Better put a broom or some brushes by the door, Cher! When we Midwesterners come in again later today we may have a bit of white stuff to brush off. We could get up to six inches of it today.

Chris, that's scary!

Chris - During my recent visit to the upper left coast my son was telling me of the folks who start their climb up the mountains (Cascades) in summer clothes, only to discover that even in the summer the peak is probably closer to 40 than anything. T-shirts and shorts turn out to be a poor choice...

It's good you were knowledgable enough and capable of working your way out of your situation. We've all read to many accounts of people who didn't.

But the teenagers still amaze me. I guess they don't want to be burdened with keeping track of their coat at school....

Well, we are now getting freezing rain, with a temp of 30 F, wind chill 23.

Lunch menu today: have made beef vegetable soup, cream of brocolli
soup, and have plenty of chilli left. Sandwiches to go with the soup/
chilli: peanut butter/jelly, tuna, grilled cheese, "fried" bologna, roast
beef.

Guess it's time to put the Christmas music on the CD player. And
especially for Sarah, I'll make sure there's a recording of "Let It Snow".

Oh I agree, but watching it just once is a hoot. Like some of the comments I've seen on the websites that are hosting this, though, I would agree that if I were a neighbor I probably would have shot this guy after a couple of nights.

EDIT: I could share a pic of our 2005 edition of outdoor decoratons, if anyone would like to see them?

....Even for local travel in winter, I keep an extra coat, fur hat and mittens in my S-10...it just takes a few minutes out in the cold stuff without enough covering and one can get in trouble......And CW....140 miles north of you we're watching for that 3 to 8" of the stuff they say is coming our way....It was to start 2 1/2 hr.s ago but none yet. First it was to go south of us than the NWS changed it to what I just related.....But one thing, it's getting warmer...30 degrees here {Muncie}, now and we've been in low 20's all week and very low teens at night so at least the cold is moving on....Now we'll wait and see what we get in snow....It is moving fast {so they say}, so it will be headed east by tomorrow morning......

Quentin - it is a fast moving storm and is relatively dry. But messy.

Brian - sure - I would look. I like to peek in windows, too - (when we are driving after dark and people have all their blinds up so I can admire their living rooms!)

Doesn't look too bad out, yet. Mail was just delivered, and looks like it's just a
light snow shower; does sound like a little bit of sleet mixed in with it, though.
They closed the schools here at 12:30 for middle/high school, and 1:30 for
the elementary schools.

Made a fresh batch of beef stew and cornbread; thought that would help thaw
out anyone who's already had to shovel snow.

Just checked the website for one of our local stations. From 5 p.m. to
11 p.m. EST, we are to get ICE PELLETS, then turn to snow
after 11p.m.[V]

They were telling us this morning that we were going to get maybe 2 inches- I think we've got 4 so far, and it's still falling... I'll get that picture tonight and bring it to the diner AFTER I get done with the snow blower...

OK, I'm back as promised with the picture! As you can see, we went with a red and white theme this year.

We ended up with 5.3 more inches of the white stuff. After all that snow blowing and picture taking, I need some beef stew and cornbread.

Brian, like the way you've decorated your house this year.

We didn't get a lot of snow, but now the temps are dropping, before the wind
could dry the roadways. We've already had several accidents tonight, in-
volving several semis/other vehicles: especially on the interstates.

Rough driving on the way home tonight. We got about five inches while I was at work; I guess the city got it worse (with the airplane going through the wall at Midway and onto the street and all...wonder if those traffic lights were coordinated with the plane traffic?). However, I was glad to find that the temperature is quite nice--I actually shoveled the plowsam out of the driveway before coming in (flotsam, jetsam...why not plowsam?).

Whoever left the eggnog and fruitcake I scrounged up here, thanks! I needed that!

Top of the page again, I see. Top of the morning, too, now that I look at the clock!

Hey Crowd [:I] [:o)] [;)]

It is 4:10 am and these are our current weather stats

Temperature: 20°F -7°C
Conditions: Fair
Winds: NW 7 MPH NW 11 KPH
Relative Humidity: 62%
Barometer: 30.52 Rising
Visibility: 7.00 Miles 11.27 Kilometers
Feels Like: 11°F n/a

So Q, Carl, Z, and all you north of me can take your cold weather back now. I have had enought. [B)] [8] [:0] We were actually a little warmer than Dallas for a while today. [:0] They said we were going to get 2 ot 4 inches but all we had in my local area was almost nothing. We had a little ice but it didn't stick to the roads just the cars. About a 20 minute drive north northwest of me they did get about 1 1/2 inches of snow. Some places in Arkansas got 3 inches. It is suspose to warm up now and be a little better. I am definately ready for that. [;)]

Well I am going back to bed now for another 2 hour nap. [;)]

Take Care. [8D]

Jingle, jingle.....giggle, giggle.....chuckle, chuckle.

Neighbors will be history on 1/31.......HA HA HA....

Guess they have totally trashed the place but their lease runs through 1/31 (housing) so they will stay until then. We will suffer most likely, (noise) but I can live with it and will just keep sending the driver over to yell at them.

Brian - like the decorations!!! That's more like it. I love to go see everyone's decorations - and will do so just as soon as the evenings get above 15.

Jim - you southerners are only getting a small taste of the north. This is just to prove to you that you can survive in the cold, and don't need year round heat and humidity! And frozen lives much longer!

Good frozen morning, everyone! Sorry about sleeping in again this morning.
But the bed was just so toasty warm and comfortable: didn't want to
get up out of it.

Regular breakfast items are on the breakfast warmer bar, and we also
have doughnuts this morning. Glazed, jelly filled, chocolate covered,
cream filled, vanilla filled, etc. Even have some of the doughnut holes this
morning.

Had I known that work had a two hour weather delay this morning I'd have slept in. But I found out after I got to work, so will just have to do my relaxing here. Like some recreational surfing.

Not sure why the delay (although a lot of schools delayed, and some south of here actually closed), since the roads were merely lousy, not really bad. I've come to work through worse, for sure.

I'll take a bunch of donut holes with my mint tea. Since they're holes, there's no calories, right?

Big Q, was 32 here in Houston, 26 in College Station just to northwest of us, stayed that way for about 9 hours.
We warmed up to a whopping 33 around 7 this morning.
Wind chill drops the temp ten degrees, so it feels like 23 or so…

Squirrels have invaded the attic trying to keep warm, found a nest on the top of the central heating unit!
Got the evil eye from the kids as I moved it outside...so stuck it up in the rafters of my workshop...mom(or pop) squirrel was seriously POed, kept barking the entire time, got down right feisty for a while.
Little rascals had a good stash of pecans up there too, and are pretty good shots when they are mad!
Tough, they will just have to live with the sparrows and pigeons above the woodshop.

Should hit the mid 40s today; be in the 50s by tomorrow.
Still to cold for us swamp rats, you guys can keep the fluffy white stuff, it looks really odd to see snow on palm trees and Texas live Oaks, still with their leaves dark green, they don’t shed till May.
Stay away from Dallas and the Austin/Hill Country, they don’t drive all that hot on dry streets, cant drive at all on sleet or ice, looks like a bumper car festival in the Dallas area.

Don't mind the fluffy stuff - it just blows away. It's the slushy stuff we had on the roads this morning that's a pain. Plus, a lot of the plow drivers seem to have the idea that if school is delayed or closed, they don't have to plow...

At least we've already had our big "first snow of the season" so most people are now back into the winter driving mind set. That first snow is always a festival of cars in the ditch (and worse). You still have your occasional moron who insists he can still do 55-60, but he'll get pulled out of the ditch as soon as the tow truck gets there.

Tip Top of the Morning Everyone!

Brian- Dig the Red and White theme. Really classy! Thanks for sharing.

Ed, I know all too well about Texans (and Californians and Mexicans) not being able to drive in less than ideal conditions. It seems the migrant populace of Colorado is comprised mainly of those three groups. Couple this to the fact that many of them have MegaSUV's that can get started in slippery conditions (but not necessarily stop), and it can be a recipe for disaster. BTW, how does the Magnum do in the snow. I would imagine that you could throw some weight in the back, and it wouldn't be too bad.

Oh well, hope you all have a great day. We're supposed to be sunny and near 50 by Sunday, so I may head out and take some pictures. If I'm not around, I'll catch you all on Monday!

TTFN!

We got a little less than our friends over the state wall just to the south of here, about 3 inches. Still in the deep freeze at about 10 degrees at this time, but the plan is for mid-20s by noon.
Planning a trip to Evanston this afternoon to hear a securities analyst talk about the financial situation of the big RR's, but road conditions may be a stopper.
Tomorrow is more important. Scheduled a rare train chasing day, camera at the ready to catch the Empire Builder making a detour around Milwaukee. Hopefully, one stop will be in Randy's home town of Burlington, WI.
Warning to Ed B. Watch out for snow sliding of those boxcars.
Stay warm
