Looks like it was all bark and no bite last night, got about a half inch of smow, but the winds don't seem to be too bad around here. It's getting preeeeeeeety cold up here, though. It's about 21 here at 2pm cst, down from a high of 34 or so at 1am. Forecast low tonight is around 14.

Madison had the interstate ice capades during morning rush hour, lots of black ice on the bridges and overpasses. Quite a few wrecks on the Beltline this morning. Time to get used to driving in snow and ice again. [B)][B)][xx(][xx(]

Chicken and dumplings sounds good tonight, I think I'll swing in to grab leftovers after work tonight, I figure by then I'll need something hot to warm myself up after tonight!!

See everyone later.

And for anyone not wanting chicken & dumplings, there's beef stew w/

Yum Yum gimme some! Can I have a sprite to go with that please?

Well, to my surprise it got really dark here in Philly at 4:00pm, it looked like it was midnight, however, no rain just wind. I guess we're due for a storm sometime soon. I just hope it doesn't come over the weekend because I plan on doing some railfaning.

Sarah, It just snowed here in Chicago today, but very lightly, the stuff barely stuck to the ground. Still, I like the snow!!!!!!!!!

CopcarSS, enjoy your stay here in Chicago, if you can, there is a lot of great railfanning in the area!!

It's only midnight, and Arthur says it's 18 degrees out there.

Arthur? you ask.

Arthur Mometer.

I think I had too much cobbler.

I'm not looking forward to going to work in the cold weather tomorrow.

CW, is what you make considered true RR food? Beef and Corn bread mix is out of this world! But I'd really like to know what the chow was like on freight 50 years ago.

It's dropped down to a balmy 13 degrees here near Madison at 3:30 am.

At least the truck started okay tonight, a bit of smoke, but ran pretty good.

For some strange reason, maintenance at work tonight was working on trying to get the new heaters going. It didn't help either that the doors kept opening to get trailers swapped out.

Have a good morning, everyone.

Jim - the beaneries here in the middle of the country served just about what our two local diners serve today - eggs/bacon/potatoes for breakfast - burgers- graveyard stew - soppy - (bread and gravy)
and lots and lots of grease. Or you carried your own lunch in your lunch bucket and ate it cold with your thermos of hot coffee on the engine. Lots of Tums (circa 1950's)

CW - is home-cooking unlike you would ever find in most railroad towns - but who would really have their heart in cooking at 2 am when the rest of the town was dark and asleep!

Hi Joe - glad to see you again!

Randy - about the same here last night - finally got the doors unstuck, but still had trouble getting one closed. Then the tires were frozen to the rock parking spot. Had to back up several times to break them loose! Ah - winter!

Well, I finally woke up and got in here, folks!! Jim, glad Mookie could answer
your question about real diners. I just figured that the good men working on
the railroad, would like some good ole downhome country cooking. And
that's what I do, since I grew up in the country.

Joe, thank you for getting the coffe, juice, and hot chocolate going this morning!
Guess it was just too comfortable and warm under the covers, to wake up this
a.m.! Don't usually sleep that long.

Breakfast this morning: turkey bacon, sausage, sausage gravy w/biscuits,
scrambled eggs, oatmeal, toast, jelly.

Gonna slide back into a corner, and drink about a gallon or two of coffee now,
just to get my eyes really open!![|)][|)]

Here's what's for lunch today:

The usual burgers, fries, hot dogs; along with: some of Carl's Hearty Soup,
or you can have mild chilli, or five alarm chilli, and we'll have some grilled
cheese sandwiches to go along with the soup or chilli.

'Snow Joke - it's snowing to beat the band outside, and piling up. Doesn't seem to be sticking to the roads, but the grass and stuff is slowly disappearing under a blanket of white.

And to help make it "beautiful"

SNOW (1985)

Snow, that blessed, cursed fruit of the sky:
Sometimes floating,
Often flailing,
Always frozen.

It covers the land with a mantle of alabaster,
Purity personified.

Lying on the landscape like grandmother's quilt,
Swept into hills and valleys by the whistling wind,
What marvel this myriad collection of flakes: individual
Indistinguishable, woven into a blanket of white
By a power greater than ours
To be rent by man:
The rumbling, clanking plows
The children of all ages
Who become, in its presence
Artists, architects, and engineers.

Oops - I was wrong. It IS sticking to the roadways, etc.
Unfortunately, the cars aren't. Neither did this one.

Of course, we've got plenty of these.

Tree - "branching" out into poetry/prose, hmmmm.....

Glad you are getting snow - that means it is far away enough from us to not back up!

We drove past a car that had apparently just been rescued from a position well beyond the shoulder of the tollway.

I didn't think that much precipitation had fallen, but I guess the wind freeze-dried whatever had turned to liquid on the roadways. Clear and dry this morning, though!

Arthur says 23 at the moment. Biked to the store, but wouldn't do anything but drive to work today. If we have dry days over the weekend, I can probably get some of the last 70-75 miles I need.

Hey, glad the Hearty Soup's a hit. One batch makes plenty for in-house consumption, but I'll bet the recipe has to be doubled or more for the diner! I know how big those pots are!

You've seen a picture of me?

Not really.... But our virtual selves must outweigh our real selves, with all the food we seem to consume here in the Diner.

Mookie, you know I've always got some bacon made up around
here, so it's very easy to add it to your grilled cheese sammich; and
there's always cold chocolate milk around: cold chocolate milk is
all I'll drink, except for buttermilk.

Supper for tonight is ready; along with leftover chicken & dumplings, we'll have
lasagna w/garlic bread sticks (thought I'd change from Garlic Texas Toast to-
night), and garden salad. And for Carl, and anyone else who wants it, I have
some Ceasar salad also. DESSERT: cherry pie and cherry cobbler is
on the menu for tonight.

Wow - pretty empty in here! Heard through the grapevine that a certain "he shall remain nameless" got his feathers ruffled when he tangled with some snow in a certain part of a state west of us....(Is that vague enough?) Seems wings and talons don't always help when driving!

Good Friday morning, everyone! Gee, Mookie, sure hope "nameless" is all right!!

Breakfast this morning: brought in some doughnuts. Have plenty of coffee going,
made juice, hot chocolate. Also have some bacon & sausage fried up, and have
made some biscuits and gravy. And there's hash browns or fried taters to go
with them. So have your pick of the breakfast menu specials today.
