I'd be afraid, VERY afraid, of what they call mexican food back there!!!! Amigos and Taco John's is bad enough in Nebraska....The further north & east you go, the funkier it gets....

Saudi Aurora huh? Come say Hi! when you're out to visit....We've got Roger Grenville running around here right now and besides the fact that we talk funny and drive on the wrong side of the road, he's got to be wondering if we are all insane!

Not much for Mexican here in the north country - Taco Bell, Fresnos (more of a "southwestern" flavor than Mexican).

But I had Mexican in Greensboro, NC at a "Mi Pueblo." Pretty darned good, and our waiter's English was definitely improving.

Haven't made it to Colorado, yet, but will likely do so at some point. I'll be looking for you.

MC

A co-worker gave me the secret of why White Castle "sliders" are so cheap. "I'm not buying them," he says, "I just rent 'em for a couple of hours."

There used to be a Big Boy chain in the Chicago area (Topps was the name, I think), but they're long gone. We can still get good stuff at Elias Brothers' Big Boys in Michigan. But in the western half of the state, we prefer Russ'...a home-grown place that began life as a Holland hamburger joint and is now a nice family restaurant chain.

And while you're ordering stuff for delivery, Chicago's number-one hot dog and Italian beef place--Portillo's--will ship. My younger daughter and I swear by these restaurants, and her fiance picked the local Portillo's (with a room that can be reserved) as the site for the rehearsal dinner next year.

As for you, Sister Mook, keep those blueberry pancakes and blueberry syrup in mind for August, too. We have some vacation time in August, and we're headed to prime blueberry country in western Michigan. We are going further north, too, where the orchards abound. I suspect that cherry season will be past, but apples, peaches, pears, plums, apricots, etc., ought to be nice about then. The area around the family cottage is also prime asparagus country, and it's much better when it's fresh (I think the season for that will be past, though).

After 3 days of waiting I finally caught the WSOR Spray train in town.[:D][:D] I got a couple of pics but they weren't great because I wasn't really ready for him and so We got down there late, when He was leaving the "Picture area" of town but I still got a few. I'll post pics in a few days if Nora will host them for me.

Let's see - Wed - let's have oooo - Blueberry pancakes/waffles.

Worked in a restaurant that made patty melts - (for Dave Down Under) - they are burger patty, swiss cheese, onion and grilled altogether on rye bread. (they grill the burger first to get it done)

They are good, but have a tendency to be just a tad dry - so if you dip it in blueberry syrup - it makes a great sandwich. Just a little - don't overdo!

Don't want syrup in your whiskers...

Hey Mookie! (Dratted time zone differences mean I'm late in replying! [:(][:0][:(!] )

[;)][:)] That sounds like an interesting combo! For me, that's a classic example of the "up over" style of mixing savoury with sweet - and I admit - it does work in some combos...and I guess...a matter of what you're used to too.....[;)]

...Kozzie....Do you have "Texas Road House" restaurants there in "down under"...Here in the mid west they are pretty popular. Our unit here in Muncie sure does a good business. University is near by and they are the waiters and waitresses and customers too plus the town folk....Generally it requires a hand held buzzer to check one's place in line to get in...especially week ends and when the university is full in the fall, etc....

"Outback" is a national chain "up over" that thinks it's Australian ("No rules, Just Right"), but probably does NOT measure up! (The Aussie slang word for food might cause concern here.) There is a "Lone Star" chain up here, probably unrelated except for the name (The Aussie website looks soooooo similar!). Texas Road House in Ft. Collins, CO just shut down after 230 people got sick from food poisoning (bad honey butter, norovirus) on a recent Friday night.....

.....and now I know why I have 4 rows of asparagus going to seed in my backyard garden!

Asparagus is good when it's tender and fresh (I know, you practically have to graze the stuff!).

However, despite my unsuccessful attempt to entice some of the hungry people here, I have to confess that I cannot eat it myself, either (does something to my system that no other food does...not good!).

Kozzie,
Funny, but there are no Lone Star Steak Houses inTexas...
Lone Star, and the Texas Land and Cattle Company Steak Houses are offshoots
from a older restaurant chain, the Night Hawk.
At one time, there were two Night Hawk Restaurants, one in Austin,
the other in San Antonio, Texas.
Family owned and run, they were great places to eat, each with its own local flavor.
Sold in the mid 90 to a investor group, who formed several "Theme" restaurants, The Lone Star, Texas Land and Cattle, with a few others.
Do a little digging, and you will find they are all owned and run by the Texas Land and Cattle company Inc. in Dallas Texas.

They have their own distribution center and purchasing center, and ship most of their meats and produce from their distribution center to all of their restaurants from Seagoville, Texas(a little suburb of Dallas).
Some items in each chain are purchased locally, depending on what it is.

As for how authentic they are, well....
You would have a better taste of Texas eating at Dans parents Mexican food resturant here in Houston.
Or ask Mudchicken about Los Cucos, real homemade Tex Mex.

David,
I am sure they purchase locally there, but you never know.
Mickey Dees ships some of their junk overseas!
I would bet your Lone Star Steak House is run under contract, or franchise,
and buys most of its product locally.

Ought to be about lunch time there, getting a good case of the munchies yet?

Just finished some home cooked fried chicken, and was speneding time in the woodshop.
After I posted, got hungry again, so had some biscuts and gravy.
Might even fini***he night off with vanillia icecream with carmel topping.

Now that I think about it, I just might bake a pecan pie or two for tomorrow.
I like this thread, gives me an excuse to cook, then eat...

By the way, who ever mentioned the pork chop covered with mushroom soup, try substituting one cup milk, and one cup sour cream, with sauted mushrooms and onions(saute onions and mushrooms, sliced or chopped, not whole, till the onions become clear, not brown). Heat the liquids till simmering, add one cup water, stir, and then add the pork chops, mushrooms and onions, simmer covered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionaly, till the chops become soft.
Pepper the whole mixture.
The chops just about fall off the bone.
About a billion calories per bite, but worth it...

My 11 year old daughter just got back from a tour of the UK, she had beef and bacon pie in Wales.
Said it was really good, wanted to know if I could make it.
Where would I find a recipe for it?

Ed, I will make a few enquiries...pies ( the small individual pise size - not the huge dinner plate size) aren't that big up over??? We have hear other fillings, like steak, onion and tomatoe; beef and curry; etc etc.......maybe it's the linkage with the UK?
