One of the usual guys was on Vacation though, but I had seen his replacement once before when he took a different vacation. It started to rain at about 8:30 for about ten minutes, then quit, then rain really hard for a moment at 9:00. We had the scanner on the local police, fire, and the WSOR channels, so we'd know if they canceled it. Thankfully the rain subsided for the rest of the night, and the fireworks were great. While we were waiting, there were two other mini-shows, sort of. two ameturs about 7 blocks away in each direction fired off a mini show themselves. I had the scanner with incase something happened. I had the fire channel and the police channel on, but thankfully nothing happened, and the show went great. Did hear soem sad news though. Up in northern Wisconsin a teenager got killed when a firework went off prematurely or something. He had head trauma and died at the hospital later that night. It's really sad when you here about that kind of thing, it seems like the fourth really doesn't go by without that happening though. Maybe the US should do something like in Oz, just limit it to ground only stuff.

Noah

Hey Noah [:)] Sadly, due to accidents lke the one you have related, [:(] there is actually no fireworks (even ground stuff) available for personal use. [:(] I'm pretty sure that that applies across all states here. Peter (M636C) will have to confirm that for what's the story down south.

All firworks down here are handled by commercial operators that are contorlled by State governemnt laws and guidelines. Yes, very occasionally, someone still gets hurt, but it's a lot rarer. Still, I do miss those times in years gone by....sigh...

So sorry to hear of the young one's death. [:(] [V]

It is bad for middle aged or older folks but someone whose life is still ahead of them is heartbreaking to hear about. [V] [:(]

When I was in the 4th or 5th grade I had a small package of firecrackers go off in my hand. Two of us were using the same punk to light our firecrackers and one of the fuses burned faster than it should have. (That happens every now and then, ya know.) I had ringing in my ears for a while and my fingers were numb. But that was the extend of my injury then. Another time (while younger of course) we were having a bottle rocket fight. [:0] My friend's dad worked on washers and dryers in his spare time and had about 10 of them in their back yard. I had my stash of bottle rockets on one of the washer/dryers. There were at least 3 of us in the rocket fight. I was hiding at times behind the washers and stood up to shoot one. Just as I stood up a bottle rocket flew through my hair and almost got caught. [:0] Thankfully I was able to get it out just before it exploded. [B)] Later in that same fight a bottle rocket landed in my stash. You talk about "4th of July", man oh man, I had to retreat to the garage. My friends were ducking behind washers and dryers. Those rockets were going off in every direction and quicker than you could watch them.

Anyone remember the eposide of "Our Gang" where the kids were on a Pullman sleeper and the fireworks were going off? I remember it somewhat but not much. Of course I saw it as a rerun after school when I was younger.

(I hate it when my fingers work faster than my mind. Know what I mean?) [}:)] [;)]

Guys,

I'm not really sure what the law is in the ACT (or regional NSW). Certainly, you can still buy fireworks, as happened at the last "Queen's Birthday" in early June. I was out after a steam special, and didn't pay much attention myself.

In the ACT, I think an adult can get a government permit to buy fireworks, but only "display" things like rockets and roman candles, none of the basic explosives (as we could when I was young).

There is, or was a shop in Fyshwick, (an industrial zone in Canberra) where fireworks were sold. It had an amazing notice on the door explaining what legal penalties would be imposed on government inspectors who visited without making an appointment first, and this appeared on the internet a few years ago. It was still there a few weeks ago. There was a shop in Bowning, west of Yass, that may have closed but the fireworks signs were still there when I drove through following the steam special.

I wasn't sure whether the train had passed at Bowning, but the local primary school were lined up with their teachers looking at the line, and looking in my rear vision mirror I saw the train just behind me! So I didn't get to check if the shop was open.

Good - you didn't find the stuff I set aside for Mookie! [dinner]

Pretty zooey here on the 4th - the scanner stayed quite busy.. None of the fireworks were cancelled, though, which was good, as I was out on the Wellesley Island fireboat for the fireworks at Boldt Castle on Sunday. Very good show! Hundreds of boats in attendance, as was also the case in Clayton on Saturday night.

I'm very sorry to hear about a death,my condolences.

No,Jim,I don't remember that particular episode.

My cousin had one go off in his, luckily no damage.
I've had one go off several inches from hand.
And I do KNOW about the ringing in the ears,
and numbness in the hand!

My dad and I used to fireworks together. I miss that.

Okay Jim[?]Did you all shoot Roman Candles at each other[?]

Roman Candles . . . . yeah, we did that too.

Of course, I was younger then.

I wouldn't do it now.

The Internet is getting more stupid everyday. [:(!]

After about 2 minutes of "trying" to find page 2 of a certain thread I get this message:

Can't Find the Web Site www.trains.com

Yeah, right! You can't find a website the size of the state of Wisconsin. Maybe we should send the "Internet" back to school.

Mookie, same here on the coffee only. I'll bring in some coffee: need to get more for
home anyway. Anything else you want me to pick up? (Are you and I the only ones
to grocery shop in this diner?) Hope your big greens pass the eye exam with flying
colors tomorrow, and wish driver a Very Happy Birthday from us.

Well late at night is when the desserts are really good. Right Noah and Walt? [:p]

Last week's yellow/chocolate marble cake with caramel icing was pretty good. [:p]

And the week before that was the New York Style Cheesecake, ya know the Turtle one I told someone about. Man oh man, that cake was knee slapping good. Both of them were a little expensive but pretty good.

I will be having birthday cake soon. [;)]

But tonight it is Cream of Mushroom Soup, then ice cream with butterscotch for dessert. [:p] [;)] [:D]

Larry- thanks for sticking up for me. Looked, never found. If I had, tho.....
That comment about locomutt prowling about, that might explain some of the noises I hear around here in the wee hours. The Diner is too clean for mice, so it has to be something! As I get to know my way about better, I'll start checking the supply areas to see who-OR WHAT- is lurking.
Just out of curiosity, does locomutt have a key to the dessert cooler?
The joe will be hot and waiting for you, and today's special looks to be Cheesburger in Paradise Plates, courtesy of J Buffet and his License 2 Chill tour. Just got back, it was great and there was a double helping of sweethearts in grass skirts and coconut bras!

To the proprietors:

Just thought of something...does our virtual diner have a secluded corner with a couch, to which the people who get into trouble can be banished?

The girls with the coconut bras would definitely not be allowed there!
