Jim, hope this weather doesn't affect your trip home to Missouri to see your
family. Hope the weather clears up for you.

Lunch is just about ready to be dished up.

Hi All

Now about the food . . . Steak N Shake is so so. They have several in Springfield, Missouri and surrounding area. There is one in North Little Rock, I went there a couple of times but one time went throught the drive through and after setting there for about 5 minutes left with no food. Service is NOT something that is normal around here. Actually at many places the looks you get when going through the drive through is like, "YOU are interrupting my phone call." Some of the places are worse than others. To make matters worse at many of the local fast food places now they are having to teach Engli***o the employees.

One of our forum's teens, Kevin in Colorado, works for Culver's. During one of our instant message chats I found out that Culver's is now in Branson, Missouri.

I have never been to a Brauns but now there is one in Springfield. I am not sure if we have any around here. I am not a fan of Popeyes either. I am usually a very "natural" cook. I use very little spice in anything I make. I like the natural taste of the food and hiding it under a ton of spice is not my way of cooking. Popeyes is way to spicy for me. I don't even like their mashed potatoes and gravy. [xx(] I don't like KFC's gravy either. I do like KFC's chicken. We do have a Hardees here but they are usually a little more expensive than Wendy's and I like Wendy's better anyway. I just don't like paying $7 for a burger, fries, and drink at Hardees, when I can get the same for 2 bucks less at Wendy's.

Now on the weather front . . . Winter Storm Advisory for the next 3 days. Two to four inches of snow for Northwest Arkansas and up to one inch of ice for Central Arkansas. [:(!] [:(!] [:(!] It is suspose to start about mid-evening and more is expected on Saturday and Sunday. I hope they are very wrong about their forecast. I like Canada but they can certainly keep this cold front they are supplying us with, they can keep it. My trip to Missouri was planned about 3 weeks ago and now we have winter trying to make a comeback.

We have been over 70 the last two days but today's high will only be 40. [:(] This certainly has been a weird winter to say the least.

Tonight I am the sand man and I bet the locos will be taking on a lot of sand. [B)] I will have to dress warm.

Well time to go walk Duchess, grab another cup of coffee, and see what else I can do. [;)]

Thanks guys, for the song. That was very nice of you!!

Lunch is the usual Friday fare: fried fish, fries, hushpuppies, mac & cheese,
and cole slaw.

As usual, we'll have the same for Friday night supper, except we'll be adding
fried shrimp to the menu.

Desserts tonight: chocolate pie, chocolate cake, and peach cobbler.

....Think we "lucked out" on all the potential weather that passed from west to east....No problem with the winds causing any damage around our area...{but did hear of some areas with gusts up to almost 70 mph.....}, here in Indiana. But not us. Not even very hard rain. Temp started to drop about 10 last night indicating the front was coming through....From 57 about 9:30 to 44 near midnight and then I heard no more of it...This morning it's 29 plus now...Just a very fine skiff of snow on the grass and that was it for overnight.
Bright but mostly cloudy this morning...with sunshine at times.
Rain even delayed racing at Daytona yesterday afternoon...Didn't finish up until they had the lights on roughly the 6 pm time bracket.....

Freezing rain last night, but it's all gone now, replaced by "normal" rain with high winds behind it. Supposed to be windy all day, and colder, with a low in the single digits tonight. They're forecasting snow, but with this wind, it'll be in Canada before it hits the ground.

Arlo's sounding good this morning. Maybe we can follow that up with a song about another restaurant - Alice's... Sing along now - "You can get anything you want....."

Good Friday morning, all! Well, the rain really hit here around ten last night.
Moved on east pretty quickly. Guess that wind really blew it on out: didn't
stay around here too long.

Breakfast this morning will be turkey bacon, oatmeal and toast. Will also
have some sausage, gravy & biscuits for those who want that for breakfast.

Guess I'll turn on the CDs this morning. Feel like listening to some good
train songs this morning. Ahhh, here's a good one: "City of New Orleans."

Good late night all...

Wound up working for 3-1/2 hours today, then management decided to send everyone home before we all got stuck there. Drive in and out was nasty both ways, truck hasn't been out of 4WD since Wed night, probably won't get out until the weekend is over seeing as it will be too cold for the salt to do anything on the roads.

Culver's is good food, I've been trying to get away from fast food lately, trying to lose some weight. Most of the Hardees in this part of WI have dried up or are being taken over by Popeyes, which is decent for a chicken place, about par with KFC.

Gunite everyone...

The new Culvers in Delavan has excellent service. The owner has several stores in the area and he works right in the thick of things during the up and running period. Also runs model trains on tracks that circle the perimeter of the dining area. The gauge used for garden railroads-whatever that's called.

The midwest Carl's Jr's just aren't like what's in CA (headquartered in Anaheim, started as a hotdog stand at Central & Slauson [SP/ATSF Goodyear District] in LA, old Carl Karcher must be turning over in his grave by now)...ate at one in Ft. Collins today.

Steak & Shake is like eating burnt sawdust between the buns (VERY well done)

8 degrees outside [and falling] with 2 inches of dry powder on the ground from this morning. (Easy to push off the walks with a broom)....BIG change from Phoenix on Wednesday.

Our experience with Culvers was good food, terrible service in Iowa and Wisconsin. Time to put in a plug for Whataburger, Braum's, In&Out & Frisch's now? (and KUDO's to Mookie for not bringing up the gastronomic terror with the green & yellow signs that seems to have taken over NE)

....I'm surprised of the Steak n Shake locations mentioned by all of you......And yes, CW...I like their bake beans too.....{in the little pot}...
I was really surprised of seeing the one way back in about '61 down in Orlando....At that time didn't see any along the way between here {Indiana}, and down there but suppose we have many of them around the mid west now and on out east..at least in Ohio and Pennsylvania....Joe, the one we stop at in Ohio...{just new in the last few years}, is over in Zanesville, Oh....just off to the north where I-70 goes through that town....
It looks like the snow and or ice part of this weather system is going north of us...Through Michigan and upper great lakes area. We're getting pretty good wind now and some light rain and it's still warm indicating the front is still west of us and they are talking about wind up to 35 mph late tonight and the front will go through about 2 am....
We're under a tornado watch now....but that happens often...but more so in the spring.

Quentin, from what I remember, Steak-n-Shake originated in Illinois, which was, until the recent weather, west of you!

However, it tried Chicago once and didn't survive. This time it seems to be sticking.

We've not had the snow or hail yet, but have gotten thunderstorms, and over 3/4" of rain (that should have been seven inches of snow) so far since midnight.

Back to the food chain, or chain food. Yes, Culver's is good, and slowly spreading. California might get lucky 'way down the road. As the Techguy said, Carl's Jr. is Hardee's up in these parts.

And as for you, Chad, check out Portillo's somewhere in Anaheim when you can--that's the best Chicago chain around.

Carl, Don't you have Carls Jr. back there? I thought they were a national chain.

Carl Jrs is known as Hardees in the MIdwest despite the fact that they are all the same chain.

Steak and Shake is good, especially when I have to work late, but I like Culver's and while out west have to stop at In & Out at least once during the trip.

As for the weather, thunder snow showers, pea-sized hail and tornado warnings in the Chicago area today. It is still February right?

CW- Cornbread to go with the roast?[dinner]

The pork roast and veggies will be ready in about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Quentin, we got quite a bit done, but there's one section we will need to get at
tomorrow. Should be able to handle that, so long as it's not pouring down rain.

Also, Quentin, we have Steak & Shake here. Haven't eaten there in a long time.
Along with the best fries, they had the greatest baked beans I've ever eaten in my
life!! Really liked their chocolate shakes.

Quentin - I watched the weather channel this morning and we had very little "moisture" in our part - but it did mist and that is what is causing the problems. Our main streets are clear but of course, the side streets are sheets of ice with a sprinkling of snow. North of us they were supposed to get dumped on with snow. Yesterday, we had high winds and this morning it was still windy. And we are sending it all over your direction!

Oh yes - only about 17 degrees to go with it, too!

Brrrrr.....

...Surprised to hear of Steak n Shake west of us...They are reaching out though. Indiana is about the first place we saw them and then found one down south in Orlando...many years ago...About 1961 and since then they have moved east of here into Ohio and now some in Pennsylvania. Of course I don't portray them as a 5 star restaruant but do like their steakburgers and they have the best fries.....and good milk shakes. Wind getting rough here....They are saying gusts this evening possibly up to in the 60's mph range....Batten down the hatches.
