LM,
They didn't have "Heritage" schemes for me to choose from with KIA. I sure wish they did. I think L&N scheme would have been a good look. I did settle with red and wife got light blue.

I will, however, be ordering me another L&N license plate to go on the front. They didn't make room for number boards on it. I'll have to settle with my Ky tags. At least we don't have the stupid smiley sun face anymore.

Okay, everyone, I've got a BIG, BIG pot of beef stew ready!  Along with three large cast iron skillets of cornbread.

For desserts, we have:  apple cobbler, blackberry cobbler, peach pie, and pineapple upside down cake.

I hope everyone enjoys their stew and cornbread, and whatever dessert you pick.  Stay warm, and stay safe this afternoon.

Morning all........

After dropping down to 8 this morning, supposed to get to 22, then down to 6 tonight.  Truck is plugged in to keep it warm, although I don't intend to fire it up untill tomorrow for work.  Jay, I offer no explanation for being warmer, except maybe all the hot air from the politicians in Madison throwing off the readings.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

See everyone later, I'll come in for the beef stew, will feel good on a day like this.

Plus single digits this morning.  Just got the keyboard thawed so I thought I would check in.  Won't complain too much as I figure Ray in Souix Falls is probably in or close to the coldest spot in the country.

Good Sunday morning, everyone!  It's a nice, CHILLY morning here. Our outdoor temp is around 26, 27 degrees. They say we're running about 15 or so degrees below normal around here.

Joe, thanks for putting the coffee and other hot drinks on, and for making the rolls this morning.

Data Fever, sorry I didn't see your request yesterday for beef stew.  It will be on the Sunday Dinner  menu for today.

Everyone have a great day, stay warm and stay safe!

I'm going to go with the Hawaiian this evening.

It was another great day today.  Because of the wind, I wore a sweatshirt on my walk to the grocery store.  What a mistake!  It didn't take that long before I took it off.

I've come to the conclusion that the weather here is just too nice.   I'm thinking I should move to an area of the country that has a bit more inclement weather.  Cool [8D]  Laugh [(-D]

....Ray, that's an interesting story.  Very much enjoyed reading along with it's interesting points.

Yes, Holiday Inn from the movie, very famous....

I encourage you to share in your way of the stories you mention of your dad at Christmas time.

I mentioned in my first post of commerical radio being just 10 years or so old back in your mention of 1936....I say that because of the famous first commerical AM station KDKA was not too far from my home back in western Pennsylvania...It was located in Pittsburgh....and still is currently.  A 50,000 clear channel station as they used to say quite often....Perhaps they still do.  I assume it still broadcasts at that level....I really haven't heard it at night time for some time as one tends not to choose AM stations currently at night, etc....

Your mention of Paul Harvey is interesting....In 1936, commerical radio was only about 10 or so years old.

Of course we still hear him on his daily broadcast.  He must be well into his 80's by now....

My Dad was something of a pioneer in radio broadcasting. What he is most remembered for is that he created a Christmas music program which aired consecutively every year from 1936 to 1990. Traditionally, Dad would go on the air with his two hour show on Thanksgiving and run it through Christmas eve. The name of his program was "Holiday Inn." In 1952, two years before I was born, the big Holiday Inn hotel corporation filed a lawsuit against my Dad because they had the impression that he was using their name without their consent, which wasn't the case at all. Dad had taken the name "Holiday Inn from the motion picture, "White Christmas", starring Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. The hotel corporation and my Dad settled out of court with a gentleman's agreement, and I think that the judge threw this case out. The interesting thing about all this is that in 1978 the inkeeper of our local downtown Holiday Inn asked my Dad to come to work for him as a sales agent, which my Dad did for two years.

My Dad was a good story teller, and he always did a good bit of research into how various pieces of music came into being. I am considering eventually sharing two of the stories that he always told on the air at Christmas time with everyone else in this forum, in printed form. Dad's Holiday Inn programming was always paid for with radio advertising, and many of his sponsors year after year, were our local merchants, including Bechtold Jewelry and Ace Hardware.

My Dad died in August of 1991, due to pancreatic cancer. There was a time when I wanted to follow his footsteps and get into radio broadcasting, and I even took a course in radio in 1982, but being somewhat introverted, I decided that I don't have the kind of "on-the-air" personality that one should have if you are going to be sitting behind a mike in a radio studio.

How is it you are warmer up there than we are down here?

Thanks for the offer, but I know your Dad will have had a long day moving snow around and there is still the evening chores.

We got the job done with the new "rotary", but it still took several hours work.  In front of the garage we have house on one side and two cars parked on the other side, so clearing the upper part of the driveway is a trick.  Move snow, move cars, move snow, move cars.

Delavan had the spreader out.  First time I recall seeing that.  Downtown, the snow is moved to the center of the street, then late tonight, the front end loader will be out loading the dump trucks.  I plan to sleep through that project.

Jay

Talked to my parents last night, mom told me how he "plowed" the driveway.  The man owns a Bobcat, a tractor with loader, and a truck with a plow, and all he did was run his truck up and down the driveway a few times, packing down the snow.Confused [%-)]Confused [%-)]  Probably had to get  my uncle to plow the drive again.  Wouldn't be surprised if the Town of Burlington had the road graders out yesterday.

Still breezy here, is 26 on my Weatherbug, supposed to get to 30 today, then drop to 10 tonight.  Stay warm everyone, see you back for pie later.

And the core of that dry air was virtually on top of us here, a pretty strong high pressure system that protected us from the storm.  Also produced a pretty tight pressure gradient, which generated the high winds that everybody else is experiencing.

Wow. We sure dodged a bullet here- not a flake and bright sunshine at the moment, 26 degrees.

Considering the several inches that Denver received from this system, and what it's doing out east now, I'm amazed that you didn't get a single flake. How's that work? Willy?

The storm was such a powerful system that the cutoff line with the snow was extremely sharp. Here's a link from the National Weather Service in St. Louis that has a satellite image showing the snowcover.

http://www.crh.noaa.gov/crnews/display_story.php?wfo=lsx&storyid=4495&source=0

Probably the biggest reason that Brian didn't get any snow at all was that there was a lot dry air to the north of the system that prevented any of the snow from spreading too far to the north. That satellite image is really interesting, wouldn't you say?

Good morning from the frozen state of Iowa- I slept in as well, didn't get up until 8:45.  We've got 25 degrees here, so alittle warmer than you, Ray.  Gotta get moving, though, and take Joanie to a hair appointment- while she's stuck there, I can get some Christmas shopping done!Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I managed to catch the latter part of the Polar Express last night as well; a neat movie.  We'll definitely have to rent it so I can see the beginning.

A good Saturday morning to everyone out there, I reckon a lot of us are sleeping in this morning. Not me. I've been up since 5:30. It looks like I'm the first one in the Diner this morning, so I will take charge of serving breakfast. I've got the coffee brewing, and the orange juice and hot chocolate are ready.

On today's breakfast menu, bacon, scrambled eggs, ham and cheese omlets, fried potatoes, buttermilk silver dollar pancakes.Chef [C=:-)]

It's a COLD, fridged morning here in Sioux Falls this AM, with our temperature sitting at only 10 degrees. It will warm up to about 16 degrees later this afternoon and that's it. I am getting ready to work another shift as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, and fortunately I will only be working half my normal shift. They have unpaid volunteers from various churches coming out to relieve all of us paid bell ringers. From where the Salvation Army has me posted, I can hear trains, but I can not leave my post long enough to go watch them.Sad [:(] There will be no shortage of pretty girls who will walk past me to do their shopping, so I kind of look forward to that!Tongue [:P]Laugh [(-D]

Hi All,

Couldn't make it to the diner for lunch, so I stopped and got some Chinese with one of my co-workers. My fortune cookie told me:

"Good news will be brought to you by mail."

Lo and behold, my mail came, and along with it the new issue of Trains! Woo hoo! Not bad for a cookie! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

MOO....

You mentioned Paul Harvey. In the early 1960's when I was in grade school, Paul Harvey came to Sioux Falls and spoke before the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce. He ultimately ended up having coffee with my Mom and Dad at their house. My Dad was a member of the Chamber of Commerce then, but more specifically he was a well-known radio broadcaster and musicologist who had a career in radio that spanned 55 years. Dad first went to work for KSOO AM in 1936, and KSOO always carried Paul Harvey's daily commentary.
