All the hot weather around (we've been pretty mild for the past few days, thank goodness) reminded me of another "shelter" function our FD social hall can fulfill - a "cooling center." Heard them mentioned in stories about some city or another that was suffering record heat. We are already on record as a shelter in case of other natural disasters.
A nice salad with chicken sounds good for lunch!
Soda is OK for slow rehydration and "recreational" use, but for serious rehydration, stick to sports drinks (such as Gatorade or Squincher) or just plain water. Why? Soda doesn't absorb into your body very fast, and many have caffiene - a diuretic, and hardly what you need if you're already dehydrated... For rapid rehydration - two bottles of water and a bottle of sports drink (or the equivalent) in that order.

Morning all, and a belated to Nora! Hope you had a great one!
It's still been warm a mile up, but I really haven't had much of a chance to experience that (drat!) as I've been busy taking care of being two people at work (my boss is out of town, so I have to be him and me!). So I'm not sure, but heading out into the heat and going trackside just might be a reprieve!
Meanwhile, was playing around in Lightroom last night (I've posted another thread about this with links to the download). I think it's going to take a little getting used to, and there's still stuff that will only be done in Photoshop, but I really think there is a lot of potential, especially when it comes to streamlining ones workflow.
Well, I guess I had better be on my way. Hope you all have a great day!

CW - For lunch, I would like a green salad with mmmm grilled chicken on top. Ranch dressing. Maybe some fresh fruit mid morning?
Willy - not a problem on the breakfast. CW and company sat with me so I wasn't alone. We will get together before school starts and visit. I am so excited. You get to go to school and I don't have to.....
It was quite a surprise opening the door for the paper this morning - hard to breathe. Now I know what Houston Ed means when he sez it is hard to breathe down there when the humidity is so high. Ugh. But I would still rather have this than the ice and below zero that we seem to attract. Finally found some really "cool" places to visit when it is hot.....(heading to the walk-in fridge)

How's about White Castle. That's where I am headed around high noon today.
Everyone have a great day and stay cool.

Hey, it was 104 °F. where I was today. And we're not getting any breaks in the heat until next week.
I hope the Depot Diner has a huge refrigerator filled with cold sodas--we'll need it!

We hit 101 today. NO FUN. I sure am glad I was off. Our high for tomorrow is listed as 102.
Everyone into the pool. Oh WAIT ! I don't have a pool, therefore, give me 2 HUGH slices of that Mississippi Mud Ice Cream Pie.

The orange tastes a lot better than the same Gatorade flavor, and I believe the fruit punch is about the same. Didn't get a drop of rain tonight, but had severe weather north and south of us. Supposed to be about 85 tomorrow, with much lower humidity. Gunite all

Thanks Randy. We need rain down here big time, so if you can organize some to slip "down under" that would be good.

Hello everyone. I think I'll have some lemonade, I'm worn out from all this heat and humidity we've got.
Mookie: I'm so sorry that I wasn't able to show up for breakfast this morning! As I said yesterday, I have work study every weekday until next Thursday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM and no computers are allowed. I hate to postpone things until July 27th, but I'm not sure what else to do. Is there any way you could come in on Saturday or Sunday?
I just don't know what to do! I'm invited in for a nice breakfast and railroad discussion and what do I do? I show up at 4:30 in the afternoon with the lame excuse that I was working at school (something that I never want to do during the summer again) to help pay for tuition. Shoot me an e-mail tomorrow and we'll figure something out.

I'll even share mine with Matt...
Last time I chatted on-line with Nora she was happily working for the railroad at a small yard near Pittsburgh. Not the conductor gig I think she still wants, but RR nonetheless.
But, just in case she's lurking, Happy Birthday! Otherwise, all quiet on this front. Weather a little milder, but I'm in an air conditioned building today, too...
Can I get a bacon cheeseburger (cheddar cheese, medium well) for lunch? Doesn't do much for the cholesterol, but it sure tastes good....

I spent the last two days down in the Dampier area (about 250 km west of here) looking at Pilbara Iron (the former Hamersley and Robe River lines). We had bad luck with the former Robe line and the Hamersley line was closed for rail replacement for a lot of the time. We still got a lot of photos (and a flat tyre). Is Mookie still around here? I'd love to get over to the pilbara one day to see those big EMD's and GE's running around! (one day) The original car dumper here in Port Hedland came from the Oroville Dam construction project on the California Oregon border. This operation used the first U25C locomotives and the dumper was designed for these locomotives which are much smaller than current locomotives. The Alco C636 which started the operation here also fitted the dumper, but the later locomotives have all been trimmed to fit, the GE Dash 8s have different cabs and cut down radiators, the AC 6000s have lower cabs with sloping sides and even bigger (but lower) radiators (it is VERY hot here in summer) and even the SD40s have low profile fans to keep within the dumper profile. The SD70ACes don't fit the oldest dumper, but the radiators are lower and the cabs are slightly lower, but they are clearly taller than the AC6000s. At the moment AC 6076 and ACe 4306 are running as a pair but I've only seen them as remotes mid train. Hopefully I'll see them leading before I return East. 6076 is the only AC6000 in the orange and grey colours carried by the SD70ACes (all the others are still blue and white) so that is the pair to see leading! The SD70ACes sound quite different to the GEs of course, but sound a lot like the SD40s, and you often get SD70ACe/SD40 combinations with a distinctive sound. There is one pair of SD70ACes running which must be number two desirable lead combination. I spent the weekend down at the Hamersley line where everything is pairs of Dash 9 44CWs. At least there are two colour schemes (silver and silver and yellow) and three lettering styles. The Robe line has Dash 8s as trailing units still in the Robe River yellow. One rebuilt Robe Alco is in storage (clearly visible) in working order. M636C
