Okay, we didn't get out as soon as planned.  So, I've gone ahead and fixed lunch.  On today's fish menu:

catfish, cod, perch, bass, halibut, flounder, scallops, clams, jumbo butterly shrimp, corn on the cob, cole slaw, hushpuppies, fries and baked beans.

And for dessert, we have:  fresh-from-the-oven chocolate cake, yellow cake w/caramel icing, and peach cobbler.  That oven's really gotten a workout this morning!

Getting ready to head out, so see everyone sometime later this afternoon or early evening.

No apoligies needed but thanks anyway!  I think I'll see if there's some left-over cake to help jump-start me today.  Can't seem to get all cylinders firing.

It's a little past 9:00 AM here in Sioux Falls and we have a temp of 50 degrees. It's supposed to warm up here to about 73 later this afternoon. I have the day off and I should use my free time to do some long overdue house cleaning here. I must do a load of laundry and shop for groceries. My neighborhood Sunshine grocery store has my employment application on file and I should let the store's manager know that I am still interested.

Happy birthday to Dan! Happy B-Day [bday] Happy B-Day [bday], I hope your day will be a GOOD one!

....East central Indiana has partly sunny skies this morning and a bit cool...54 degrees right now.

Just can't admit we're heading into the cooler stuff....Avg. high here right now is 70 degrees.  Still not bad and the next 4 or 5 days are to be somewhat warmer here....Mid 70's at least.  That's better.

Now if someone can wave a magic wand and resuscitate the economy....Sure hope the H of R's pass the "rescue" bill today to give our economic situation a chance to even begin to improve....it might be too late.....Hope not.

Anyway, it's Friday but that doesn't make much difference to a retiree.  Our street seems to be ready for the new pavement so we'll be watching for that to happen.

Good weekend to all.

Good Friday morning, everyone.  And Dan, please accept my sincerest apologies for missing your birthday yesterday.  But, your birthday is now on the Birthday Calendar, so that won't happen again.  So, anyway, Happy Birthday, Dan!!!  Happy B-Day [bday] Happy B-Day [bday] Happy B-Day [bday], even though I'm a day late with the wishes!!

The following beverages are ready to go this morning:  coffee, juice, hot chocolate, hot cider, hot water for tea, and plain ole white milk.

Our Friday Doughnuts, Danishes, Bagels, Bear claws, and muffins are on the counter.  I'm going to grab a chocolate covered, cream filled long john, and an apple danish, and will be over in one of the booths.

Going to be out and about around lunch time, so would one of you please take over for me, on our Friday Fish Fry?

Mookie, I thoroughly enjoyed our down time today!  Thanks, I think I needed that today.

But, need Dan to explain the three birthday cakes.  All three sound yummy!

For supper tonight, you all will find on the warmer bar:

1.  Homemade vegetable beef soup

2.  Leftover pork chop abracadabra w/mashed taters, gravy, and and garden salad

3.  Beef stew w/cornbread (and there's plenty of cornbread, in case anyone wants cornbread with your bowl of veg. beef soup)

Everyone enjoy your supper, and have a good evening!!

I  have a special comb my daughter acquired for the Dal.  That, combined with a special shampoo, is supposed to render him "shedless" for a while at least.  Considering the amount of hair I get off him with just the comb, I suppose that if I spent long enough going over him from stem to stern, he wouldn't have enough loose hair to shed.

The problem with the other dog is worst in late summer, which seems to be when she sheds her under-fur.  In clumps...

Or, I can just vacuum a little more often.

Actually, the Dal doesn't mind the vacuum.  I take the hose right to him...

Mooks, time to get a new landlaird! My girls are stubborn and aggravating, but they are a part of my my life. If I had to give them up, I would move. There are other places....

Amazingly, it doesn't seem to do too well on furniture and such, as it snags fabric easily. It only works on the pet.

Zardoz - I appreciate the information.  Our landlord has a no pet policy since we lost Mookie shortly after he took over.  So dogs and cats are verboten.  But I think I could still have a gerbil or hamster.  Just not sure I want to hear something on a wheel all nite - in 405 sq ft up and 405 sq ft down, noise travels really fast!  And not sure I want grief every 2 years or so.

Meanwhile, I will continue to enjoy the squirrels that are very close to learning how to ring the doorbell for their peanuts.

Wonder if Furminator would help with all the hair on the bathroom floor (mostly mine as people who have met the Driver will attest!)

Mookie,

May I suggest that you consider getting another pet.  Yes, the greiving is difficult (lost two of our favorite cats to cancer within a month of each other last year), and it takes a while until one is ready for another.  But greiving (and death) is a part of life, and my wife and I decided that it is worth it for the many years of joy we get from our (back to 4) cats.  If one chooses to avoid the pleasure of relationships due to the fear of loss, one has already lost something valuable.

And if pet hair is a problem for any of you (Mookie, Larry, et.al.), check out a product called Furminator (we got ours at QVC).  We have two, one for upstairs and one for downstairs), and it will absolutely amaze you how much hair it will pull off your pet, but you have to be gentle with it until you get the hang of it. And the pets really love once they (and you) get used to it.

.....A very nice day with lots of sunshine but no mowing this afternoon as they are here on our street with the machinery cutting an edge along the yards and driveways with a grader, and then a powered brush and a Bobcat picking up the excess ground and loading it all on trucks.  All in prep to repave our street.

The result of attending most of our city Council Meetings....{Screeching wheel getting the grease}.  We continued to inquire "when will our street be paved".....and when it came down to choices and the budget, we're really convinced it influenced decisions.

Afternoon all.  Seems to be a quiet day in my neck of the woods, sunny but cool and breezy at 55.  Kinda nice change from hot/humid but either way...I'm going to enjoy the day.

I've got dessert ready: 3 birthday cakes!  Vanilla Bean, Lemon Poppyseed, and chocolate with their respective frostings.

....Larry, you mention the patterns....I'm amazed at what one sees at  many Nascar race tracks as some do the mowing {in grassy areas}, in sweeping patterns...Guess some ball parks do the same.  I'm always impressed with those works.

My yard....65% of an acre is nice and flat and open with a gentle slope down to the street in front, and it connects to a golf course at the back yard edge.  I {on purpose}, don't have trees scattered around the house but do have 4 evergreens at the back edge.  Two reasons.  Don't generate any leaves to pick up...Just some of neighbors and this is windy Indiana, and with that in mind....didn't want any close to the house.

Quentin - My back yard isn't really conducive to straight lines.  Besides, I have fun cutting patterns!  Right now by back yard is about ready to bale.  I haven't had time to mow, and when I did, it's been raining....

Can't mow tonight - fire meeting.  And I'm off for a conference this weekend.

Mooks - if you need a little dog hair as a reminder, I'd be glad to send some your way, although it appears the Dal's shedding has slowed down of late.  I usually find little piles of short white hairs anyplace he regularly brushes up against something...  And that's with regular vacuuming...

...Jen, I mow at 3" in height and it does enhance how the yard looks.  Also try to mow in nice straight lines and that adds to it too.

I mow roughly every 4 days throughout the season, except when we get into a bit of a dry spell as we've been in now for weeks.  So it has extended up to a week between cuttings.  In fact, Ive mowed just 34 times so far this season and generally I hit the 60 number in a normal season.

I just like to keep the place neat along with smooth trimmed shrups and it all contributes to a neat appearance.

Thanx Joe.  Coffee is especially good on a cool morning.  Sunny and no breeze.  No clue what the temp is, but must be in the low 60's by now.

Q - our landlord cuts our grass about every 6-7 days, but doesn't cut it really short.  It looks so nice.

...I note everyone is a bit cooler this morning, including us...54.1 degrees now in mid morning but bright sunshine too.

Once we get into October Winter shades are lurking out there....It can be 80 degrees or drop into 40's and maybe sometimes into the 30's.

But still I'm in the act of thinking of yard mowing....Maybe yet today.

Like that bright sunshine streaming in on me here from my eastern office window....

Don't hear of any severe stuff around right now so seems about normal weatherwise.

Good Thursday morning, everyone.  Very cool this morning, with a current temp of 50 degrees outside.

Coffee is ready, as well as fresh juice, hot chocolate, and hot water for tea and there's also hot cider.

On the breakfast bar this morning:  turkey bacon, sausage patties (pork), hash browns, oatmeal, toast, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy, scrambled eggs, bagels and bear claws.

You all have a good morning, and enjoy your breakfast.

Yeah, we're still getting sunshine here, with enough of a breeze that it's kind of on the nippy side out.  Had to go to the bank first thing this morning, so we could have some bus tickets, and got a few groceries while I was there.  Right now, at noon, we have a temp of 60 degrees.

For today's lunch and supper, I've fixed pork chop abracadabra, w/mashed taters & gravy, green beans, or sweet green peas, glazed carrots, creamed corn and baked cornbread.

For dessert today, you have your choice of:

1.  Chocolate cake

2.  Yellow cake w/caramel icing

3.  Apple cobbler

4.  Blackberry cobbler

5.  Peach cobbler

Think I need to go put on a sweat jacket:  even here in the house, it's on the cool side.  (Too cotton pickin' early to turn on the furnace.)

Tonight's supper of pork chop abracadabra and all the sides are on the warmer bar for tonight.

Definitely going to be a nice evening, to curl up and cover up, to keep from getting chilled.  But, that's fine with me!!

I never shut mine off - I just turn it down and put the thermostat on "hold."  That way I don't get surprised by a mid-summer cold snap.  And I've seen it drop into the low 40's here in August...

Larry, we have several floor furnaces in our house.  But the one in the entry hall gets vaccumed out all the time; but when we actually turn up the thermostat in the fall/winter, we also check one of the smoke detectors:  if it goes off, we know we didn't get all the pet hair out of it!Wink [;)]

(furnace; if it were pet hair in the smoke detector, I'd be wondering about the cats climbing! )Question [?]

....Boy, this talk of turning on furnaces brings this fall season into too much focus, reminding of impending Winter on the way.  Seems I dislike it more each year of age I add.

But sure would not be happy to live where the furnace "kicks on" during August.  Haven't had to add any heat here yet, in fact, this is the "coolest" bit of weather we've had this season so far.....Right now it's 62.4 and sunshine and a bit of wind....Cool enough, but not bad.

No furnace to kick on either.....Individual radiant {electric},room heat with each room having it's own thermostat.  Believe we're to warm up a bit next weather change.

This Summer cycle sure has sped by fast and got us to Fall really fast.
