.....Have been watching our Pacers play in Madison Square Garden these last couple of hours and wondering if we would also lose this one in the last sconds {or overtime}, as we've been subjected to in the last 4 or 5 games.....but would you believe we didn't....A miracle occurred and we did the super stuff in the last seconds and won it.  Beginning to think we were in a permanent curse.

Deggesty

Kentucky (SE Conference) has done better against East Carolina since I started watching the game--scoring two touchdowns, complete with the extra points, to tie the game.

Johnny

Ky forged ahead of East Carolina and won.  Third straight Bowl Victory in three years!

Well, Utah did it! My watching the game did not help Alabama for long. Dorothy (the strong Utah fan in our church) should sleep well tonight.

 Joe, Thanks for getting everything going this morning;

CW should be in shortly.

(for once, I made it up earlier than her.)

We're supposed to start getting rain late this afternoon/early evening,

but don't think it's to get cold enough here for any freezing rain.

(supposed to be in the mid 50s today)

Found a "Small Collectable" at the Flea Market yesterday;

A small porcelain container approx. 2+ inchs in dia., about 4" tall,

with a lid; and PRR Keystone Logo.

Don't think it's a "Fake", really looks "Old", not something that could be

manipulated into something else easily.

Will have to get picture of, to show and see if anybody knows what it might have been.

Yeah, my Gamecocks sure stunk up the Outback Bowl - I feel like apologizing to Iowa, they sure deserved a higher quality opponent.

to Deggesty: no, I didn't win the prize for first baby born in 1950. Came in a close second, though. Seems like this set the tone for the rest of my life.

to Grampaw Pettibone and Canadianpacific2816: thanks for the birthday well wishes. Hey Grampaw, isn't there a shortline in your area that still operates an F unit? If so, would you please email me some directions to where I might see it? I would greatly appreciate seeing one of these old girls in revenue service instead of on display in some museum.

Hope all of you Flatwheelers have a prosperous 2009!

Good Saturday morning, everyone!  I had a really goooood night's sleep. Went to sleep at 10:30, woke up at 6:30 this morning.  Mutt was already on the puter, so I went and turned on the coffee maker, and looked at the newspaper.

Joe, thanks for getting breakfast this morning!  The oatmeal really hits the spot this morning.  We currently have a temp of 43 or 44 degrees, and supposed to have a high of 54 today.  May get a little bit of rain after 5 p.m. tonight, but that's about it.

I'll be back in later this afternoon, fixing up the pizzas for tonight.  Now, I need to go pay "Bill", and go to the grocery for a few necessary food items.  Going to be fixing a turkey for us to have here at home for the next few days.  You all have a great day, and take care.

This weather would be nice to have the rest of January, but suppose not much of a chance of that....28.8 now and blue skies and bright sunshine.

Good Saturday morning everybody. Currently 44, calling for 61 and rain later. CW, it's sure nice to get a good night sleep ain't it.

Dave, you are probably thinking of the old Waccamaw Coast line. They had several Fs, but after it morphed into Carolina Southern, they seem to have gone thattaway. The local short line, South Carolina Central has no Fs to my knowledge.

Everybody stay warm and safe

Good morning, all. It is a bright sunshiny morning, with the temperature in the twenties--and below ten expected tomorrow morning. We had about three to four inches of snow out here in the valley, which did not take long to clear up with a snowthrower; it made a pretty plume. It was more trouble to clear the chunks that the snowplow had thrown up between the sidewalk and the street. We are not promised any more snow until next week, and then we may have snow every day for several days. It is nice not having to get out about seven in the morning (or earlier if it has snowed) and scrape ice off the windshield to go down to West Jordan and take care of the needs of the plant where I worked.

I think that the only college football team that won every game this season should be considered the Number One in the nation. Utah certainly looked good last night. (When BYU played Alabama a few years ago, one of the sports writers from the Salt Lake City Tribune said that BYU looked like they had just come out of the woods, and he has always tried to be fair towards BYU.)

With all due respect to all who have great pride in their teams and conferences involved in the BCS Bowl picture.

The SEC is standing 5  and 2 in post season play so far. South Carolina and Alabama did give brave performances. All the others, especially Vandy and Kentucky did great things even as teams that had a rough regular seasons. My  GA Bulldogs did good duty in Orlando with some green Spartans, Ole Miss I have to admit looked very good in the second half against a well thought of team known as Red Raider's,  as did LSU  against my favorite team to dislike (****) known to us from UGA as the North Avenue Trade School. (We thank LSU for keeping SEC honor alive after our less than fortunate outcome against the ACC's GA Tech Jackets)

With January 8 coming for all the marbles I hope Florida can make this a 6-2 matter for the record. If you think I am leading up to something, you would be right. The BCS system that is currently being used is in need of some re-engineering. Computers programs are not the place to decide matters best decided on the gridiron face to face. I would suggest a playoff system similar to the NCAA Basket Ball System. A separate thread would of course be in order, but I would rather have the feelings of the cafe before such a thing would be put in a railroad forum.//

Mutt:

If I remember right it looks like a Cigarette Jar. They were mostly found, according to my Grandfathers', (may they RIP) in the bosses and politicians offices, men's clubs, fine restaurants and on dinning and club cars on first class trains back in the 20's, 30's, and mid to late 40's. The only reason I know of them is the few I can remember seeing as a child back in the 50's. They were between 3 and a half to five inches high, about 4 to 5 inches across and held about a pair or slightly more packs of AA cigarettes. These are not to be confused with Tobacco humidors that usually had cedar linings, moisture pills with pipe cleaners and standard stemmed (kitchen) matches on their sides.

I googled cigarette jars and did get some results, Mutt you might be on to something

PL, I had forgotten about that name for Georgia Tech. I have been well aware of the feeling between the North Avenue Trade School and the college over in Athens for many years; back in the sixties I saw several GT freshmen wearing beanies (I think that is what bore the sentiment) with the wonderful, to them, sentiment "to h--- with Georgia." Apparently, they had to be indoctrinated with the correct attitude. Did you hear one of the announcers commenting that the Yellowjackets did not have far to travel with the ignominy of their defeat, just a couple miles to North Avenue?

To me, the BCS idea has not been successful. I know that many people were not satisfied with having sportswriters, coaches, and a few others deciding the ranking of teams, but I believe that a playoff series would be exceedingly cumbersome. It is used for the smaller colleges, but I do not know the workings thereof.

While our dinner here at home is still in the oven (we may be eating around 8, 8:30 tonight), here is our Saturday Night Pizza Fest menu:

1.  Anchovie

2.  Cheese w/extra cheese

3.  Goetta

4.  Hawaiian

5.  Pepperoni/mushroom

6.  Supreme

7.  Calzones (Italian sausage)

Dessert Pizzas:  1.  Apple;  2.  Cherry;  3.  Peach

Around 4 p.m., we had some rain; that has stopped, at least for now, at 5:43 p.m.

I hope you all enjoy the pizzas, and also wish everyone a very good evening.  Take care, you all.

Good evening. I thought I would report in. I just got home from one of my part time jobs and the weather here today has not been to my liking. Early this morning we started getting a light drizzle here in Sioux Falls and it quickly froze. My sister ran me to work at Wendy's this morning, and one of the guys who drives a fuel delivery truck drove me the two blocks between Howes Oil Company and my front door. The parking lot at Howes Oil is like an ice skating rink right now, very slippery and treacherous. Hopefully it will warm up a bit here come tomorrow. Right now we have a temp of 10 degrees, and I don't think it had gotten much warmer than that all day.

CW, thanks much for putting our pizza dinner together tonight. I think I'll grab a couple slices of the Hawaiin pizza while I am in here.

Ray - you can keep the freezing rain.

Cold here - ten above as I write this.  On the other hand, all of the stars are out and it's a beautiful, calm night.  A bit cold for the Dal - his feet are sensitive to the cold, especially if exacerbated by the salty slush at the side of the road.

Headed for Rochester tomorrow to see the rail photography exhibition at the Eastman House.  Should be interesting.

Good Sunday morning, everyone.  We're at a very pleasant 58(?) degrees F. this morning, looking for a high around noon in the low to mid 60s.  Then the temps will start to drop.  Right now, we're getting rain.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water for tea are ready.

On the warmer bar this morning:  turkey bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, pancakes w/plenty of maple syrup, and there's some cold pizza left from last night, also.

I hope you all have a very good morning, and for ones going to church, work, wherever, be careful and take care.

Nice and sunny, though, so it should be a nice day.

Good morning. I thought we had it cold at eight degrees until I read Larry's post; we expect it to get up to about twenty today. At least, no snow since Friday night; we may have more Monday through Thursday.

Off to Bible study and then church in a little more than half an hour (thirty minute drive).

Keep warm.

Good afternoon, all-  posting this from a hospital room in CR with my laptop.  The ailment I mentioned the other day wasn't going away, so my doctor checked me in.  As near as they can tell, I have Sarcoidosis, which is an auto-immune disease that will require me to take Pregnazone.  Should be going home tomorrow, once all other possibilities are ruled out and they start me on that stuff.

Ughh.
