Think our light rain has switched to a light drizzle; but temps are dropping.  At 12:46, we're down to 35 degrees, and it is very windy outside.  Some schools (though not our JCPS) are shutting down two hours early, so the kids can all be home, before the really bad stuff gets in.  Temp will be about 28 by 5 p.m., and about 25 by 8 p.m. tonight.

I have fixed the following for the rest of the day:

1.  A fresh pot of chili (very mild) with your choice of PB&J or grilled cheese sandwiches

2.  Another fresh pot of navy bean soup w/ham and cornbread

I figured with just about all of us either in or going into the freezer, temp and windchill wise, something like this menu would help keep us all nice and warm.

You all have a good afternoon, enjoy your lunch, and please take care traveling or walking outside; and keep safe out there, too!!!!

Ms Mook - I'll be dealing with that whole temp thing while Mom's here.  I turn the heat down at night and snuggle into my waterbed.  The upstairs is notoriously cooler, but I have a small electric heater and an electric blanket for her to use.  Plus, I'll be kicking the heat up a few degrees and leaving it there during her visit.  After she leaves we'll get back to normal...

The humidity is also a problem - the house gets very dry in the winter, which doesn't do me any good, but she'll probably be just fine.  The humidifier will be running, none the less.  One thing I hate about my visits to Phoenix is the dryness.

She called this AM - apparently the wx forecast for Wednesday (when she flies in to SYR) is spooking her.  They're calling for some mixed precip but no major weather, from what I can see.  Shouldn't be an issue.

Finally figured out how to fix a problem I've been dealing with, so no I have to go out and use the fix...

Q, I thought the first day of winter was the 21st?

Randy:  I'm not talking about the first day of winter....I'm saying, today is the day when the sun does not set earlier, in fact it sets one minute later and continues to set later to Jun. 21th.  {Here in my part of the world}.

The 21st of Dec. is considered {in this northern territory}, the first day of winter and in daylight hours....the total minimum of daylight, considering when the sun sets and sunrise times.

Sunrise occurs later until about the 2nd week in January when it too starts to rise earlier, and hence adds to more daylight hours in each day.

But the 21th of December, using sunset and sunrise times, totals out to have the least daylight hours in the calendar year.

J.....You might cure bedroom temp by using a dual control electric blanket....A control for each side.  But one word of caution....{we did it years ago}, don't get the controls mixed up.......That got pretty funny.

Q - I have gone thru 2 electric blankets and 1 electric throw.  They all failed either in or right after the first year.  I got tired of trying to have them fixed, so just use them as blankets.  I loved them, but The Driver always turned his side off.  Now he is complaining about his shoulders being cold (it is draftier on his side of the bed)

My solution is to stick him in bed headfirst and solve a whole array of problems.  (snoring, cold shoulders, stick feet out because too hot.....) Mischief

......Now that really is high power {yours}, and high tech cure....If that window is on his side....don't forget those plastic window supliments we talked about back a week or two ago.....

Boy, couldn't handle  having the heat vents shut off....Believe our bedroom thermostat is set at around 68.

Well, we're already down to about 27 to 29 degrees here in Louisville.  Just got back in from taking the dog (Winter) out, so she could do her business, and it's COLD!!

So. . . .  I've heated up the chili and the soup and cornbread, and have put it out on the warmer bar for tonight.   Also made up some more PB&J sandwiches and as you all want them, I'll grill some grilled cheese sandwiches.

Joe, there are containers in the fridge, with your name on them, so just take your pick for work tonight.

CW, thanks for supper. It actually got rather nice here after the rain stopped. I think it got up to around 73 or so, but it won't last. Storms is comin, just wait. Had a quack visit today, and he didn't like what he saw in my eye, so I got hustled over to the eye clinic. There, they found that when I had pink eye, I also had shingles on my eyeball, and that's where the current discomfort is coming from. Tomorrow shall be barber day, the wife has decreed, just cause I am getting a simian look about me. Some people are never satisfied.... Cheers

Good Tuesday morning, and welcome to the cold zone.  Mookie, here's your coffee!  I've also got the juice ready, along with hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water for hot tea.

On the warmer bar:  oatmeal, toast, bagels, bear claws, turkey bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy.

Cannonball, good to hear from you.  Glad to know you got the card.

Well, we managed to bite the bullet here in the Metro Louisville area.  Our streets are clear, and the kiddos have school today.  But, if we still lived out in Bullitt County, the schools are closed there.  They have about a quarter inch of freezing rain & sleet under the snow they got.  We may get more here, later, around mid morning in our area.  But the temp is in the low 20s, with wind chills in the teens.

Guess I'd better start getting ready for Tuesday Produce.  I'm almost surprised that there aren't any cars parked out front yet.

You all enjoy your breakfast, and I'll see you all later.

Hello My Friends,

I'm still out here.

Having been without power due to the ice storm I've been off line foir a while but everything is back on and I hope to catch up on some past posts.

Sorry if I haven't gotten back to some folks here, I've had my hands full with trying too keep the house warm for my Wife who is disabled.

I managed to keep her and the dog warm and keep supplies and dry wood in the home.

It has been a hard storm on everyone I know in the New England area.

When I returned too work as an EMT we spent the whole shift doing welfare checks on the elderly and I'm happy to say that we had no deaths on our check list like the last ice storm.

We are grateful for the electricity being back on, life is much easier now.

I hope and pray that everyone here has their electricity too stay warm with.

Peace and best wishes too all.

Jess.

Good afternoon, folks.  Well, it's good to see you back, Jess.  I'm glad to know that you all fared well during the ice storm up your way.

We only had 27 people at Produce this morning.  They brought:  cole slaw mix, bags of sausage gravy, bananas, potatoes and sweet potatoes.

Here is the menu for the rest of the day:

1.  Chipotle Tomato Soup

2.  Cheesy quesadillas

3.  Tacos

4.  Burritos:  beef & bean, beef, and beef enchilada style

5.  Enchiladas

6.  Chimichangas

7.  South of the border Snapper

8.  Black beans & rice

Today is definitely not a day to be outside around here.  Raining now, and I think it's freezing rain.  But, at least everyone driving by the house, seem to be driving safely.

Jess - I feel your pain, having endured the great ice storm of '98, which hit from northern New York up to Quebec.  We cleaned out a significant portion of the supply of power poles (between 8,000 and 10,000) around the country with that one.  Some places didn't have power for two weeks.

You can still see evidence of the damage to trees, etc.

Welcome back, Jess. I  was wondering where you were. A busy day for a busy boy. I went to the barber and got myself sheared by a nice lady named Wanda, went to the gunshop and left something on consignment and actually did some grocery shopping for a change. For somebody in my condition, that was a lot. It rained most of the day with a high in the low 70s and currently is 64. Yall take care and stay warm

I see most of you still have sun tanning weather.Today in the Great White North ( where I live ) it was   - 35 with the wind chill -42.

It has been like this since Sunday and to last until Christmas,we have a good foot of snow on the ground and much more to come,I purchased a winter coat that is good for - 100 very warm coat.A few years ago I was in Northern Alberta running a car repair shop it was sooooo cold up there, you would see some birds flying in the air and every so often you would see a few just drop to the ground dead from the cold.Every one just south of the border this is coming your way (MT,MN,ND )

Good Wednesday morning, everyone.  We're a little bit warmer this morning:  current temp is 34 degrees outside, going for a high of 40 today.  Believe I'll actually be able to wear short sleeves in the house today, for a change.

Coffee, juice, hot chocolate are ready, as well as chocolate milk, and hot water for tea.

Mookie, I made sure that your coffee mug is out of the dishwasher, and it's ready to be filled when you get in.  Is there anything else you need this morning?  (like, maybe, a sample of fresh baked Christmas cookies?)

On the warmer bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, turkey bacon, sausage patties, scrambled eggs, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy.

Enjoy your breakfast, everyone, take care this morning, stay warm and keep safe!!

Here in central Indiana we have 25 degrees now.  Last evening we had a bit of sleet come thru here and it's still on the grass, streets and etc.....Indy TV news at 11 last night showed a terrible amount of vehicle wrecks on I-69 and I-70 in our area.  Actually 3 people killed in one of them.  They {vehicles}, were scattered all over the R of W.  People did't seem to slow down at all...Perhaps they came upon the sleet surfaces unknown.

Believe we're to have some "warmer" temps next few days.  It just seems like a serious mixture of moisture this week in the area...Not as snow here but questionable icy spots off and on....

Hope the streets will clear a bit as the day wears on...Trees are not hanging down so Ice {sleet}, cover is not heavy.  Neighbor brought morning paper to our door {from mail box}, and he was slipping and sliding walking on the walk and driveway.

After reading Railcar's posting - I am miserable.  I can't imagine surviving in that kind of cold - and I have lived in a winter/summer climate all my life.  That is just too brutal to imagine.

CW - I am going to join Joe in the booth.  Not only is he going to warm up the booth for me, I can use his milk to dunk my cookie.  Mischief

Looks like everyone east of us is going to get more garbage weather today and Mrs. Tree will be coming from nice and warm to "I am going right back home!"'

Oooh Joe - I'll take thata one.....

10-4 on Railcar's weather....That's brutal...!  I too have experienced winter weather for years in Pennsylvania {and cold out here}, but I don't care to try the northern extremes of Railcar's rendition.

Years ago...{In Pennsylvania}, Somerset Co., we experienced 38 below one morning and that's the coldest I ever saw there.  Driving to work that morning {12 mi.}, the power steering was getting stiffer as I traveled but we made it ok.

RC, doesn't that pass as suntan weather in the north woods?

Snow overnight last night with the threat of some freezing rain later.  Might make the trip to the airport interesting.

Many schools delayed this morning, causing a lot of "what the heck?" reactions since the snow wasn't all that bad (2-5").  On the other hand, local fire and police agencies have been hopping to a number of minor accidents.  Just heard my fire chief leave the scene of one accident looking for another, which he found and which apparently involves arcing wires.

I'm at work, or I'd already be there....

Back to the grind.

It's good to know that the Christmas cookies made such a big hit this morning!  SactoGuy, you must have read my mind, because I had already started a big pot of beef stew.  It's now on the warmer bar, along with some fresh cornbread, that just came out of the oven!

You all enjoy it, and the cookies, and have a good afternoon.

Good Thursday morning, everyone.  Not too bad a morning; temp is in the upper 20s, and we're to actually make it into the 40s today, with some rain coming in later tonight, into tomorrow.  Otherwise, think we'll be mostly cloudy today, after the fog from last night burns off.

Coffee, juices, hot cider, hot chocolate and hot water for tea are ready.

And on the warmer bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, turkey bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, and homemade biscuits w/sausage gravy.

You all enjoy your breakfast, have a good morning and take care.
