Top of the morning to ye all. Thanks for breakfast, CW. 61 degrees and fog in Carolina this morning at sunrise, headed to 70 and clear. If any of you snowbirds, Pettibone bed and breakfast will be glad to give you a break from the cold. Seriously, I am almost ashamed of our weather while the rest of the country is in an icebox. Unfortunately, it won't last and we too shall be cold like the rest of the country. I have just about got the computer restored from the crash over the weekend and things are almost back to normal. I don't think I ever want to wipe the O/S again. All for now, see you at dinner and everybody take care/stay warm

The ice man cometh!  And since I have always followed Captain Kangaroo's advice about sharing - guess what I am sending east!

Mudchix is sending cold and snow and Houston Ed is sending the moisture.  Stir well over Ks and send east!

I dug out a really warm sweater and it did the trick.  Much warmer now!

Anyone have special plans for Xmas?

Merryland to spend the holiday with son and his wife and my granddaughter.  Also in attendance will be the baby's other grandfather, her maternal aunt and uncle, and a couple of cousins, one just a few months older.  It'll be a madhouse...

Daughter is staying in NY with hubby and will spend the holiday with her inlaws.  We'll see them for New Years.

Daughter and SIL now know whether the impending baby is a boy or a girl, but they're letting the suspense build.

Mom arrived intact, and a few minutes early, in fact.  Still asleep (on AZ time) when I left for work.

The ice man cometh!

Mookie, how did you figure out my CB handle?!?

Anyway, still down in Georgia, got a load Tuesday night, but in doing my pretrip inspection, I found I had no defrosters.  Picked up the load and brought it to Cartersville, and the truck was in the shop all day yesterday getting worked on.  Told my dispatcher this morning he might as well just find a load to get me home, and I'll call it good untill after xmas.

Most of xmas will be at home, mothers side is coming over this Saturday, immediate family will celebrate on the eve, and dad's side will be over the day of.  Somewhere will work in seeing some friends of mine and their 1yr old daughter.

Well, waitin' on a load again......

Edit:  Just got a load to Trenton, Ohio, see everyone later.. //Big Cat fires up, Semi takes off///

.....The streets in our addition now and from 36 hours ago, are ice skating rink rated.  I just drove wife Jean to another part of our addition to a little Christmas gathering and I had to drive with throttle and kicking it in and out of drive to neutral in making turns, etc.....{And positraction on ice, doesn't help in making turns}....It can put one in turn around mode if not very careful.  Wasn't away from the house yesterday at all.  Just stayed out of trying to find trouble.

Temp now 29.5 so this stuff can't stay ice much longer but there is more lurking in the pipeline....due later today.  Difficult to determine just what part of the state will be effected the worst.  But it's more sleet, freezing rain, etc....No snow involve much, it's the much worse ice.

I don't know if it's "global warming" or "ice age", but I'll say this....something has changed weatherwise in the last few years around here.  We've not seen this much ice activity in the previous 10 years.

Randy mentions CB.....Haven't done any of that in years.  My handle back then {when one had to have license}, was Pooh Bear....KHB 1780

Do have a portable CB that mostly is laying under the seat in our automobile and has been for years, just there from years before....Used to use it to get informed on the open roads, interstates, etc....

Remember one time going home to Pennsylvania for Thanksgiving and traffice was terrific as usual, we were approaching Donegal, Pa. exit on Pennsy Turnpike and I learned of a back up at the {still in use}, Laurel Hill Tunnel of about 15 miles or so.....via our CB.....and just managed to get off the Pike there before we got caught up in the back up and would have been "trapped".  We got over to parallel route 31 and preceeded without trouble on to Somerset about 20 miles on east, where we would have normally exited the turnpike.  The CB saved us on that run.  No cell phones then yet.

If you were to see Las Vegas and the Mojave Desert at this time you would think that all those people talking about global warming need to poke their heads outside and see whats going on.

It has been a long time since both Tehachapi and the Grapevine were closed to traffic at the same time. And I believe it was 1974 the last time Mojave got eight inches of snow.  It was down to 29 here in the valley this AM and decided to stay home and cuddle to keep warm.

Mookie, Mutt and I will be here at home, for Christmas.  Sarah will leave Monday, for a week, to see her family in Philly.  We don't know if we'll see Mutt's sister, or any of my family.  So, I will be baking Christmas cookies, here at home, Saturday, and will put the turkey in the oven Sunday morning.  (That reminds me:  give the oven a good cleaning sometime today.)

Meanwhile, here in the Flat Wheel Cafe, today's menu will be: leftover beef stew & cornbread from yesterday, along with leftover chili and navy bean soup w/ham.

Everyone enjoy your lunch, and I'll be back in after awhile.

Al.....I did see that on TV this morning.  The snow, 4 or 5" of the stuff in Las Vegas. That was a surprise.

Worked in that area years ago {automotive testing}, and enjoyed the nice weather in the Kingman {general area}, in the winter time.  But boy, up on the mountain peek there at 6500' elevation, it certainly could snow....Remember of a foot or so up there trying to get to the lodge in December and we were in a Jeep and it was really tough going.  Of course no snow down off the elevation though.

I was quite active in OKC and CA - in the early-mid 70's there were lots of social activities centered on CB - "coffee breaks", "jamborees", and quite a few clubs.   I was in the "Valley of the Flowers" club.   We all wore yellow vests with a large patch on the back depicting the flower fields that surrounded Lompoc.

Good morning from c-c-cold Sacramento, CA again! It was 30° F. when I did my morning walk this morning--I was freezing even wearing a down-lined coat. Shock

Thanks for the beef stew and cornbread! Dinner

You mentioned Automotive testing, just so happens I used to deliver new cars from Detroit for testing in the Kingman area about 25 years ago. Maybe I delivered something you tested. Mostly Ford products that I hauled back and forth, of course all were in enclosed trailers , didn't want anyone to see next years models before they were released at the shows. Small world.

Well, you just had to know that Mookie would have a CB handle, didn't you.  Used to drive my slant 6, blue and white Valiant - with a CB radio & I was the Bassett Hound.  Terrorized everyone between here and Omaha and parts in between.  But I was careful not to use the radio frivolously!

Tree - glad Grma got in ok.  Just don't have heat failure!

Randy - you get to go home!  Family will be pleased!

Sactoguy - isn't Sacto usually on the cooler side as opposed to say - San Diego?

Calif and Nevada are a mess.  Used to visit San Jacinto years ago (relatives) and now they are fighting mud.  I think I have global warming figured out!  Question  It is warming where the ice is and melting it and turning the lower 48 into ice!  Yeah?

Sunshine and warmer sweater and my hands haven't been cold once today!  21 and quite nice.  Calm before the storm?

Will keep you posted!

Ditto that last statement- Mudslinger here.  Back in my bachelor days (1974-1980), I ran around in a Jeep CJ-7- hence the handle.

Looks like most of the ice will be going south of us here (knock on wood).  Heavy snow I can deal with.

CB radio...fun times!  I was "Water Cop" which, I was 'assigned' because of my job at the time: Lifeguard.  I still use the mobile once in a while and there's a few base stations around town.  I think cell phone use/ownership largely eliminated a lot of the 'need' for the CB in cars.

Al.....We're probably pretty close to a subject we dealt with....I imagine you delivered test veh's to down on Yucca Flat to the Ford Motor Co. proving grounds {APG}.  My company was BWA and sold products to Ford...{powertrain units}, and I was involved several times there at the proving grounds with vehicles and our powertrain units.

My involvement with most of the testing was doing so with trucks and automomatic transmissions.  Our BWA transmissions.  We worked out of a location right in Kingman and stayed there doing that work but did our running {testing}, from there and down out of Kingman and up over {old route 66 thru Goldroad and Oatman and on down to Topoc and back up to Kingman.  Also north out of Kingman to route 68 {I believe it was}, up over the pass and down to Bullhead City and back up and into Kingman, etc....

It was great...I enjoyed doing that work there.  Was involved several years.  Time frame was 1969 to 1971.  Would be there 2 weeks and back in Muncie 2 weeks, and so on.....

Back in CB days I had an Osborne 300 solid state radio in my {then}, 1962 Chevy Impala SS.  A solid state CB was pretty rare in 1962, at least here in Indiana. Later my radio would be a 40 ch. Cobra.  That too was a nice unit.

But since, as I mentioned earlier, it is just a portable {hand held}, unit that I probably havn't powered up for several years.  But it's still under the seat in our automobile.  Communications are completely changed now with cell's, etc.....

Greetings. I never was on CB, but have been a Ham operator going on 45 years now. I got my license when I was 17. Now, I have talked to people in every country, have antennas on 4 towers and various other types of antennas and have more money tied up in equipment than the wife would like. I can legally use up to 1500 watts output and do so from time to time There is no "lingo" and we use our real names. I have thoroughly enjoyed it, and it is a large part of my life. .

Thanks for the supper, everybody stay warm

Tom - I have nothing but respect for hams.   I've known several, including the late Art Geyer, K8SWW.   I never had the wherewithall to learn the code, especially back when I should have been getting into it.  Maybe if I'd had a mentor.

Some folks view CB'ers as ham wannabes (and some probably were), but I think its just that CB provided the kind of social networking that MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and other such communications methods do today.  I know I had a great time with the social aspect of the hobby.

Good Friday morning, everyone.  Hmmm, all this talk of CBs makes me want to find the old movie, "Convoy" and watch it!

We are getting rain, and the temp is 51 degrees outside.  Winds are to pick up, with gusts 30 to 35 mph today.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water for tea are ready; even have some cold cider, and iced tea this morning.

On the counter:  cake and glazed doughnuts, chocolate covered doughnuts, doughnuts decorated for Christmas, chocolate covered cream & vanilla doughnuts, chocolate covered cream filled long johns; apple, peach, strawberry, raspberry danishes and blueberry muffins, along with bagels and bear claws.

Mutt, I wondered when you were going to weigh in on the CBs!

You all have a good morning, stay dry, and take care.

Thanks for the breakfast.

I too was a very frequent user of CB being a former trucker for 28 years. I ran Alaska from the lower 48 for 6 years and earned tht CB handle "Moose Gooser" as I got two with my trucker. After the second one my boss called me into the office just before Xmas and handed me a 30-30 rifle and said its got to be cheaper to hunt moose with this than your truck. After that my CB handle became "Rifleman".

Could not carry the rifle in the truck crossing borders and all but just the gift must have been enough as I never hit another moose or anything else for that matter.

Al - in - Stockton

PS Quentin we must have been in that Kingman Area around the same time, sure seems like that time frame. Next time I go to my storage locker will dig through my old log books to confirm the time frame with actual dates. I am a hoarder and have all of my trucking records boxed and in storage by years. Better half wishes I would get rid of some of the "junk" in storage but no chance.

Some schools here are already scheduling an early release today.  Should make an interesting night on the railroad.  Hopefully all of our passengers can get there.  Glad I'm staying there overnight....

Gloomy and a whole ten degrees here.  Finally got the bird feeders fired up, so there's a colorful show going on there.

Stuff to do before I hit the road.  Probably ought to have my tea in a travel mug today.

Larry, have a safe and enjoyable trip.

Schools here have their last day today, until after the New Year.

(no early closings, nothing weather related.)

NWS here is saying around 63-64 for temps. with light rain this morning.(now)

Temps will be (Supposed to be) dropping throughout the day, with wind gusts

to about 40+mph.

Here at the house we're showing about 70 on the indoor/outdoor; still think

we ought to fire up the B-B-Q  for the Lunch Time Crowd.

I think our friends south of the Ohio River are hogging all the warm air.  I am looking at at least 10 inches on the ground and still snowing.  Will be cranking up the snow blower in about an hour or so.

It looks like Randy is going to have to drop the flangers if he wants to get home by Christmas.

What's coming?  Well, we had thunder, lightning, (several times) sleet, rain and snow.  We didn't get much snow - maybe 1-2 inches, but it only covers the ice beneath.

Sure glad I closed the door between Mudchix and me - it could have been worse.  Single digits tomorrow and not much above that right up to Xmas.  We will be white for Xmas, but who in their right mind would go out and frolic in it?  (Probably me)

Tree, be very careful with the traveling.  Sounds like you will be traveling right into it.

Driver figured it would be so bad he wouldn't have to go to work today.  No such luck.

Jay - I feel really bad about your weather.  You northerners are really getting a lot of bad weather.  I feel so bad, that I am going to keep hoping that it stays right up there with you.....Mischief
