Ah - wildlife memories. About 1950 something....trip from Newbrasskey to Mount Rainier Park...
Doe beside road - we got out to stretch our legs and I commented about the deer and how wonderful to have something wild not that far away.
Dad rattled a cellophane candy sack and the deer darn near trampled me getting to the candy!
So much for "wild" life....

Without the dogs, I think I'd be less afraid of the cougar than some of the punks that are out there (anybody see the story about the mailman who got shot?). At least I have half a chance of predicting what the animal might do, and if I exit gracefully, there probably won't be a problem.
I'm afraid the dogs might tend to antagonize any large wild animal, however unintentional, and the results probably wouldn't be pretty.

Good morning all, from AZ. Cool here but will warm up after the front passes. Would like some of the rain that many of you have in excess.
Open faced roast beef sandwiches are one of my favorites (of course I have many) with the taters and gravy and green beans (also a favorite). Chocolate cake and then a nap.
I shall be away on a trip beginng Sunday, so you all take care of the railroad while I am gone. CW, you don't need to help with the RR, just keep feeding our friends with your always great selections.

Hmmmm...
I was within 10' of a cougar on a scout hike once. It stayed nearby watching us instead of taking off, so we left. It must have had little ones in the vicinity.
Eolafan, if it's taller than I am, (or almost as tall as I) then forget it!! Don't even want to come across it in daylight.
On the portable wamer bar (taking it outside on the covered patio today): open-face roast beef sandwiches and open-face turkey sandwiches w/mashed taters & gravy, green beans, and for dessert: chocolate cake, and cherry and strawberry cheesecakes.
And as evidence that nothing is done in a small way here in Chicago...the CPD cornered and shot a 150 pound COUGAR in downtown Chicago this week. Sooooo, not only do we have the gangs, drug dealers and scam artists to contend with and protect ourselves from, NOW we have Mother Nature's wild predators to deal with as well. Here is a photo of the big cat walking through the streets of Chicago. How would you like to come upon this fella at night on your evening walk?

I think I saw a bald eagle the other day in MD. Didn't get a good look, though. I have seen them in the past - what a beautiful bird!
Oddly, Ben Franklin wanted the national bird to be the turkey. Might have put a damper on Thanksgiving Dinner....
Busy day today. Lots of people bringing me problems to solve. Better get to work (after breakfast on the veranda).
morning
another beautiful day here.going to get a nap then going to be outside some more.hey it is friday tonight too!!.we have had a few more pairs of bald eagles show up around our area.they are nice to see back again.

Taking my bowl of kibbles out to patio with CW -
Humidity kind of high here today. In fact, if you look up, you will drown (turkey!) Yesssss....it is really raining here. Wonder if Sir Mud got his snow as forecast? I will take all this rain. Wash the last of the winter ick off the area.
Heard our nesting peregrine falcons are proud parents of 4 eggs. They nest on our state capitol building. I won't go up that high for fear of a nosebleed and they raise their kids up there. Something not right about that!
Off to the sunshine and always temperate temps in the garden....
Mook
Good Thursday morning, everyone. Looks like we're going to have another beautiful, wam day ahead.
Coffee and other beverages are ready, and breakfast is on the warmer bar, ranging from oatmeal & toast to biscuits & gravy, to bacon and buttermilk pancakes, etc.
Since it's such a nice morning, think I'll head out to the patio, or to the sitting area in the garden. Anyone who wants to enjoy the outside, you're welcome to join me. Maybe we'll catch sight of a couple of trains going by!!

Thanx for joe, Joe! I needed it!
CW - it blew us up into No Dak and now it is blowing us back. Not quite as strong, but plenty windy.
Hear Sir Chicken may get some snow in his near future. He sends it this way and there will be big asparagus fire!
They did some controlled burns around our area on Monday - and now must be trying to blow it all away.
Lots of job security right now - need to sharpen my pencil every few minutes. Hope it helps when they decide to RIF before the end of June.....
mudchicken wrote: PRAIRIE RANGE FIRE!
Alas, the fire near Fort Carson (one of three ongoing in Colorado) has claimed the life of an air tanker pilot.
We usually get 'blessed' with a few ground cover fires each year, normally set by someone who didn't expect it to go the way it did. We can hope that the fires in CO were at least accidental.
yes another bright wonderful day today.after a nap going to get more around the yard done.matt will be able help after school.hopefully some people around here won't decide to burn if its windy.there are always a few that do.we also had another truck hit a concrete barrier in a construction zone on 24 near napoleon.must have had nosleepitis. mookie here is your coffee.
Good Wednesday morning, everyone! Mudchicken, I hope the firefighters can get a handle on the prairie fire today! Will be saying a prayer for all the firefighters and for the citizens who are in the midst of it.
Coffee and other beverages are ready to go. On the warmer bar this morning: sausage, turkey bacon, pancakes, scrambled eggs, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy, and oatmeal. (I just finsihed eating a bowl of maple/brown sugar oatmeal for my breakfast. Figured I needed to have something in my tummy, before heading back to the doctor this morning. My ride will probably be here to pick me up in about a half hour (or less, if they decide to pick me up early). Hopefully, I'll be back in plenty of time to get lunch ready, but if not, I know you all can find something in the fridge, to warm up, or make sandwiches.
Mookie, has the wind died down out your way this morning? Or are they high enough to bring you eastward?
PRAIRIE RANGE FIRE!
Ordway, CO (on former MoPac line now "operated" by V&S Railway 45 miles east of Pueblo) is in danger of having the whole town burn to the ground. Hope tree's western counterparts can hold it off. Please send rain early to SoCO. (Tons of snow in the nountains, dry out on the prairie) The whole town of 1200+ (county seat)is evacuated...fortunately, this shortline keeps its locomotives and rollingstock in Eads instead of Ordway like its predecessor.
Yeah Quentin - I am heading down the home stretch right now. 8 pm is brush the gold and head for bed. Will peek back in about 5:30 tomorrow and see if the wind has died down. Perfect spring otherwise.... if you don't mind parallel tulips and daffodils.....
Nite all....
...You're up kinda late Jen......Today we had beautiful blue skies and until late afternoon, we had rather calm winds but then it started to give us some from the west that put the flags about straight out.....We're in a massive "H" system and that is bringing us this nice sunny and dry week. Temps were only about 60 late this afternoon. Tomorrow, it's to be about 70.
Today was the 2nd grass mowing. Had shorts on, but also a sweat shirt. But it was comfortable and pleasant.
Quentin
I have come up with a great solution. We had 47 mph winds today - out of the south, so youse guys up nort are going to see da Mook flying by - sans broomstick.
78 degrees and wow - what a draft!
