....Yes Jen, the 30 mph figure for your area and farther west that the fellows mentioned surprised me of being that low for strong gusts....

I do have a hand held wind speed indicator and I've witnessed it to read 40 plus mph without much trouble.

Since we built this house back in '71 we've had, right here at Muncie airport an official reading of 82 mph at least once that I remember of and many windy periods besides that figure.

Of  course that is straight line winds we're discussing....Those that are at ground zero or near by a tornado...{and anyone that pays attention, knows this is in that area}, all bets are off on those wind speeds.

Can that coffee cup thing measure inches of snow (like what we are to get tomorrow morning?)??? Figures, I brought on the bad weather by turning on the irrigation system, cutting grass for the first time and staining the patio furniture over the weekend.

Bad enough walking da' boyz on Saturday morning at about 65 degrees and getting caught in corn snow.

Off to points east on the prairie for two days and then New Jersey, via Sarahtown later this week.

Both it and the anemometer (wind gauge on the right) are linked to the display on the left via radio signals (in my set-up, anyway- the anemometer can be tied in via cable if the operator so desires).

Ditto, only my rain gauge is rectangular and wired into the temp/humidity sensor (as is the wind sensor).  Then it's wireless to the receiver in the house, which in turn is connected to the computer via a serial cable.

I'll have to take a picture of my outside setup...

Q - I had to laugh when you talk about the wind on the plains:  Our backyard neighbors across the fence put up one of those small, mostly ornamental windmills that would show the direction and the wind speed.  It lasted about 3 weeks.  I am sure going to miss it!  They tied it down to keep it still and just show wind speed and next thing I knew, it disappeared.  I figure it is sitting by Toto right now!

.....A cool start here.....45 degrees but it's to get to mid 60's today and warmer tomorrow.  We do have bright sunshine though.

Reading of the wind speeds out there on the plains and beyond....I'm sure if I install a wind speed indicator here we'll have no problem exceeding the roughly 30 mph range....That happens almost weekly here this time of the year.  Flat territory and 937' elevation.  But this is wind country.   And they are starting some wind generating power units in the State now.

What a mess in here today - CW and Ray collided at the door and knocked each other over.  Then as they were just getting up, I came in at my usual lady-like speed (about 3 knots) and bowled them both over again.  Well, nothing gets between me and my only cup of coffee for the day!  Smile [:)]

And standing on Ray's foot, I can just reach the goodies...sorry Ray!  Thanx for help, tho!

Good morning! It looks like I'm the first one in here this morning, so I will take charge of serving breakfast. I just pulled a pan of cinnamon rolls out of the oven, now all I need to do is add some frosting to them. Chef [C=:-)] The coffee is about done brewing and I've mixed up a fresh batch of orange juice. There is also some pineapple juice here too. Breakfast this morning will consist of buttermilk pancakes, belgian waffles, scrambled eggs, bacon and pork sausage links and there is also an assortment of donuts, rolls and "beagles" from our local Sunshine Bakery. Chef [C=:-)]

It's supposed to hit 70 degrees here in Sioux Falls this afternoon, and even though it's expected to be kind of windy today, it's shaping up to be a pretty nice day otherwise. I hope the rest of  you out there have a good day!

Good Monday morning, everyone.  Pleasant 54 degrees F here this morning, going for a high around 67 or so.  Going to be a nice, cool day.  Rain seems to be out of here until Wednesday evening, then rain through the rest of the week.

Coffee is ready to pour, fresh juices made, and in the cooler, and hot water is ready for tea.  Also have some milk heating for hot chocolate.  On the warmer bar this morning:  turkey bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, pancakes & syrup, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy and hash browns, and fresh pineapple slices.

Think I'll fix myself a plate of sausage, biscuits & gravy, then head out to the garden, and wait for company.  Mookie, got you coffee mug down, and will pour your coffee, as soon as I see you coming through the door.

I haven't figured out a way to get this one to connect to the computer. I actually I think I read in the manual that it can't be connected. I wonder if there is a way around that?

A year or so ago we had a storm come through that produced a gust of 34.5 MPH.  So far this year, the highest gust we've had came today- 27.1 MPH out of the north.  We're in the same situation, in the middle of a neighborhood with mature trees that really knock the wind down.

Mine came with a USB cable that plugs into the left side of the display, and their website has free software that you can download to utilize it.  So far I haven't taken the time to delve into using it.  I will someday, though- I want to keep better records of deltas over time.

....That's neat Larry.  Good data on readout.  I already have a wireless indoor / outdoor temp....Atomic clock feature and of course calendar. It's by Sharper Image.  Just change the batteries once a year.  And I continue to use my actual rain gauge for read out.  And, it's worked rather hard these last 24.....Probably approaching 2" by now.  We actually need the rain.

Identical.

Complete weather stations are usually under $200.  That'll include wind, temperature, humidity, a rain gauge, and they're usually wireless to boot (within range) so all you have to do is change the batteries every now and then.  Some even have solar panels!

Your biggest challenge may be getting the sensors up where they need to be.

Most will also connect to your computer if you want to go that route:

This is the display from mine, just captured.

....I've been interested in having a wind speed indicator now for several years but have never taken any action to get one.  I know I'd see some rather alarming figures of wind here if one was in place.

I do have a piece of La Crosse equipment though....An electronic watch with the time corrected by the Atomic Clock in Colorado....Love it...It's always correct.  Catch a radio signal tone and look down at it and it is reading zero seconds.  Have had it in use now for about 3 years.

I'd like to have a La Crosse wind instrument.  Guess I should take another look.  This is the season we can get some nasty winds around here.

My LaCrosse has been up and running for several years now.  It's connected to the computer, which never gets shut off, and I have hourly obs recorded pretty much since I put it up.

The temp and rainfall data is fine, but living down in a valley, I don't get the winds I'd be getting up on the flats, which is a bummer.  My highest gust ever is only 30 mph, and we've had substantially higher winds more than a few times.

Larry, I called to wish Bob Happy Birthday, and Nance a Happy Mothers' Day, and they said the same thing:  we could send some of this rain their way.  I couldn't say Happy Mothers Day to my mama and mother-in-law, so I just looked up to Heaven and told them Happy Mothers Day.

Got another round of Sunday Dinner just about ready to put on the warmer bar.  So you all can help yourselves to some good food.

Just called Mom and chatted for a bit.

It was sunny here, but the big storm system has pushed some clouds our way.  Still not sure if we'll see any rain.

Mom says we could send the rain out their way (Arizona).  It's apparently been dryer than usual.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Bob, Hope it's good one!!!!

It's Still Very Wet and Windy here, and the temps have been dropping all day, believe it's

right around 50 right now. I think the rain is supposed to "Slack up" by a bit later

this afternoon, but it had better hurry as the afternoon's almost gone.

The wind is not supposed to let up until late this evening. Been blowing 40-45mph all day,

with a few gusts up to about 60.

Happy Mother's Day!!

My dad and I have a couple of special gifts to give my mom today. I got a really nice bracelet for her and my dad purchased a ticket for her to get a hot stone massage at the local beauty salon.

It was an interesting night here. Our neighbor's tree got blown over and landed in our yard, narrowly missing our own tree. My new weather station didn't seem to have any problems though. It's an Oregon Scientific weather station, so I believe it is pretty high quality.

Pray for everyone who experienced the tornadoes last night. I hear that the death count is well over 20 now.

Mookie, glad you got to talk with daughter!  Know that was a terrific conversation!!

The birthday and Mothers Day cakes are ready; but first, before anyone can have either have a slice of Mothers Day or Birthday cake, you have to eat your dinner!!  On today's menu:

1.  Fried chicken w/all the trimmings (mashed taters, corn on the cob (yellow & white, both),  cornbread, spinach or broccoli/cauliflower mix w/cheese sauce, sliced red tomatoes, garden salad, and applesauce.

2.  Beef stew w/cornbread, garden salad and applesauce.

It is a beautiful, sunny morning here in the true midwest.  But the furnace ran overnite and is warming my feet right now.  Supposed to be 60's and very windy for Mother's Day.

Thanx CW - I "talked" with daughter by e-mail already this morning.

Happy Birthday Bob.  Bet you have had sun and warmth all weekend.  I will send the warmth on  east just as soon as I am done with it.  Cool [8D]

Joe, you beat me to the punch this morning.  Would have been in about a half hour ago, but we had a storm go through, so stayed off the puter.  The wind picked up for a bit, and you could really hear it blowing outside.  Don't mind telling you, I was watching the windows!!

Breakfast looks pretty good, Joe.  Everyone have a great day, and I'm working on a very good Sunday Dinner for the Moms around here, along with the rest of us.

Also want to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Bob, Nance 69's hubby!!  So, we have TWO cakes today for dessert:  birthday and Mother's Day cakes.
