Ray - our dreams are what keep us going!

Willy - That's very interesting.  The media has hyped it a little out of reason.  But glad to see they are going to be a little more prepared this time.  Now if we could just get some of that moisture to our area.

Hear it may be cooler next week - guess I can wait for that!

Mutt/CW - see L'ville and Kentucky were playing today?  Haven't seen the results lately, but LV was not doing so hot.

Driver now sick with allergies.  He's been pretty much 10 toes up since Friday pm.  Sleepy [|)]  Sigh [sigh]

Mookie -

Tell The Driver that I hope he feels better soon. I've been struggling with a sinus infection since Friday Morning (finally got an antibiotic for it today).

Well, finally back home after a weekend with the railroad.  Wasn't scheduled for Saturday, but went down for a kayak trip and to plant a sign at a remote point that wasn't otherwise identifed.  Note to self - when making a sign to put up out in the woods, green and gold are not the best color choices!

Signed on and rode the engine for the wine train, allowing the assigned crew to stay on the train (somebody has to ride for at least part of the trip as we have to run long hood forward, effectively blinding the engineer on the other side of the locomotive).  The revellers were having so much fun that they literally had the baggage/open air car bouncing.   Wine and a live band will do that.  Quite the event, I want to tell you.

Worked the train as student conductor today, although I again spent most of the day in the engine.  Officially wrapped up my conductor training when my name appeared on the bottom of the conductor seniority list.  First gig as conductor of record is next weekend.

The kayak trip was fun - I had the whole river to myself, other than a duck I can't find in my bird book, which preceeded me down the river for a good half mile, a few other ducks who simply watched my passing, a blue heron, probably some animals I didn't see, and two river otters who "tcch tcch'd" me as I passed, ducking underwater several times, as I had interrupted their play.  Wish I'd gotten a few pictures but I couldn't reach my camera in the kayak.

I did push a little too hard as I got a late start.  My shoulders are still sore...  but it was a great trip.

Hey Willy,

I hope you are able to recover from your sinus infection soon! I've had them before and I know they are not fun. Stay on your antibiotic until it is gone.

There is a glimmer of hope in my employment situation at Wendy's. I had been pleading with the former manager at the location where I am working to give me more hours, but to no avail. As of last Saturday we have a new manager and her name is Robin. She took the day off today and working in her place was Setsuko Daniels, the gal who hired me in February of 2007. When I went to work this morning we were rather short handed and Setsuko asked me if I would be willing to learn how to work the grill, frying hamburger patties. When I told her that I would be more than happy to learn, Al Ford, who was a former Wendy's manager in Davenport, Iowa trained me in how to work the grill. Robin had gone ahead and assigned Al some hours that he is unable to work without asking him, and so I was asked if I would like a few additional hours for this week. Normally I would be clocking out tomorrow and Wednesday at 2:00, but for at least these two days I will be working until 4:00 pm.

In light of the fact that we have people who don't even show up for work, I'm going to try to convince Robin to assign me a minimum of 25-30 hours a week. She knows she can depend on me and would have nothing to lose.

Two eskimoes were paddling their kayak in the frigid, bitterly cold Arctic, when one of them hit upon the brilliant idea of building a fire in the bottom of the kayak in an effort to keep themselves warm. The fire soon burned a hole in the bottom of the kayak and it sank, the eskimoes died of hypothermia. And the moral of the story is.............................................

"You can't have your kayak and heat it too!"

How's that for a bad story? A real groanner, huh??

RoadRunner decided to die on us Sunday, and it would be just as Gustav began the approach slow to NO.... Things just came back up but are soooo slow that it borders on Dialup. Larry, you are to be congratulated. My uncle was a freight conductor for the ACL, and I have a 1942 seniority list with his name on it. I am glad you are now on the list. Everybody take care

Mookie, sounds like you're really stuffed up this morning!  How about a nice cup of tea w/honey and lemon in it?  (I know that's a cold remedy, but it sometimes helps to open up the ol' nose a little bit.)  Please tell Driver, that we hope it feels better soon!

Coffee, juices, lemonade, teas (hot, iced sweet & unsweet) are ready to be poured, and for breakfast this morning:  turkey bacon, pork sausage links & patties, scrambled eggs, hashbrowns and pancakes are just about ready.

What would you all like for the Labor Day meal(s) today?  Do we fire up the grill, or what would you like to have today?

And on the music topic - my daughter's friends used to be amazed when a "golden oldie" would come on the radio and she'd be familiar with it.  Of course, she was used to listening to dad's music.

I find it amusing that not a few old songs have been covered by current artists.  I sometimes wonder if today's kids hear such songs and like them, not realizing that their parents (or even grandparents) probably enjoyed the song in their day.

.....And a late morning start here with 63.5 degrees and sunshine..{what else}, maybe we'll get some rain later in the week from the hurricanes.  None forecast as of now.

Just checked the TV and seems N O will be a bit east of where it makes shore....Should help the overall situation.  Let's hope so.  Believe most people have evacuated but hope we don't see such terrible priviate property and city loss as happen 3 years ago.  As well as additional levy damage.

Joe, thanks for helping fire up the gril.  I've got hamburgers, steaks, hot dogs, brats, Italian sausage, chicken quarters ready to go on the grill.  Along with corn on the cob, taters, red, green and yellow sweet peppers, broccoli, and whatever else anyone would like grilled today.

Side dishes:  green beans, cauliflower, baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, sliced tomatoes, 3 bean salad, fruit salad (with apples, oranges, pears, bananas, cherries, raisins and walnuts)

Desserts:  strawberry cheesecake, chocolate cake, apple pie, apple, cherry, peach and strawberry cobblers, and plenty of ice cream (vanilla, neopolitan, Snickers, Oreo, black walnut, peach).

Beverages:  iced tea, lemonade, Gatorade, Vitamin Water (several different flavors available like grape, orange, tropical citrus, dragonfly, etc.), fruit punch

As far as music goes, I like old time rock and roll, some blues, jazz, motown, beach music (Beach Boys, Jan & Dean), country, pop, easy listening, and big band.

Our current temp is about 84, 85 degrees, supposed to make it to 94 by 6 EDT tonight.  And maybe rain coming back in around Wednesday or Thursday.

Well, I went out and got pollinated (can I say that on here?) again.

Had to watch a lot of train traffic in and out of the area (tons of coal Clown [:o)]) for about 2 hours with a pretty stiff south wind and high humidity and high pollen count.  But so far, so good - for both of us.  I think we finally got our fall "systems" in place and can now relax and enjoy the rain and cool weather that will be here tomorrow, maybe?

Willy, will our cool front from the NW meet up with the hurricane coming up from the south?  Maybe about.....KC, OKC, ??  Could get interesting?

For anyone interested, we saw KCS, CEFX, SF warbonnet and those silly noranges.  Lots of those.  And some of my favorites - the Greenies.  Had 5 motors on a westbound freight.  They went into the yard, so may drop some off at diesel shop for pampering.

Also saw our SW10 and SW15 moving cars around.  Good day to talk to the trains!

Joe, thanks for getting the next round of supper goodies going on the grill.  And I see they're now on the warmer bar!  Fell asleep sitting in my rocker/recliner, and think I slept for about two hours.

Believe we reach our highest temp this season:  96 degrees, and it's now 'down' to 95 degrees.  And, if there's any breeze, I did not feel it when we were out on the front porch a few minutes ago.  Very hot, with humidity rising, and feels quite oppressive out.

I hope you all have had a very pleasant Labor Day.  Stay as cool as possible,  and take care.

// off to the showers for me. Cutting down dying aspen trees (rocky mountain trash trees) all day. Paul Bunyan can keep his day job, he has work in Louisiana I hear. Temperatures drop into the seventies tomorrow - figures.

Still have all my fingers, toes, limbs and blood. Didn't drop any trees on me, the house, the house next door, da boyz or anything else. Good job! (one poor tomato plant got roughed-up when the tree bounced on impact - oh wellBlindfold [X-)])

Hopefully, snowman isn't drowning in the swamp and the other forum regulars who got in Gustav's way are doing OK.

Early morning all......

Let's see, 594 plus 555 plus 339 miles is.... 1488 miles since Saturday morning, add to that another 550+ today, and I'll be wiped by about 2pm this afternoon.  Check looks real good, though.  Traffic hasn't been too bad this weekend, was a little hairy yesterday (them four-wheelers don't realize I pick up a LOT of speed coming off them mountains!!), but nothing a good set of brakes and Jakes can't handle (and the beer is STILL UPRIGHT!!)

Doing the Midnight Rambler thing today, in order to get both stops of this load off, hopefully getting quick turnaround to head back to the house for a relaxing weekend.

Will grab a few of those 5-hour energy thingies, might need them later, and a light breakfast, but will have it again when I cool my heels in Dalton, GA, unloading the first stop.

Time to see if we can get air under the left front steer (not likely, but can dream........)

See everyone later.....

Good Tuesday morning, everyone.  Going to be another hot one today:  predicting a high of 94 again for today.  Wonder if it tops out higher like yesterday.  Currently, it's 76 outside.

Coffee, juices,  teas, (iced, hot, sweet & unsweet), lemonade, Gatorade are ready.  On the warmer bar this morning:  oatmeal, toast, cereal, bagels, bear claws, bacon, sausage, eggs, etc.

Already have a couple of ladies out front, waiting for Tuesday Produce to begin.  Think today is going to another looooonng day.  Everyone take care, and have a good morning.

.....Randy, "air under the left front steer.....", I wonder just what that might be......??  Are you {as you said}, dreaming of torque to accomplish that....And those miles accumulated, that's a bunch.  You fellows really do see the country.   I'd imagine if one enjoys doing this it sure must be interesting...{as long as everything holds together}.

70 degrees here now with my "late" start.  Hazy, so must mean we have some humidity outside.  Weather people are saying after Wed. we have a 40% chance of seeing rain {from the leftover weather system now just a big Low}, and on into the weekend.  We'll see.  We sure do need it.  Bone dry around here.

Well......... It looks like Hannah has set her sights to go directly over us, but it ain't gonna happen. The news said this morning that the storm had already weakened and I say it will continue to weaken. Look for a turn to the northeast in the next day or two. Randy, I think I will let you youngsters take care of the long haul stuff.. As I get older, I become more of a homebody and like to hang out near home. Like Quentin, I am curious about the "air under the left front steer". Are you referring to tires?

Paula, thanks for breakfast, and Mookie WAKE UP.

Take care

I got out of bed about a half an hour ago and it is raining here in Sioux Falls. We probably will not get a whole lot out of this system, but Quentin, I wish we could share some of this rain with you and some others who really need it. My yard was looking rather bone dry yesterday. Currently we have a temp of 59.9 degrees and it is supposed to drop into the mid-40's tonight. That will make for great sleeping weather, no need to run A.C!

I have the day off today and I am not sure what I will do with my free time. I will probably catch up on some reading. Right now I am reading a book about Benjamin Franklin, "The First American" by H.W. Brands, it's a little better than 700 pages in length and I'm a little better than halfway through it. My Dad loved the subject of American History and I am sure he would be reading this book if he were still walking this earth today.

....Ray, a couple hundred miles make so much difference in weather patterns.  We've been really dry here at least thru this past 4 weeks or so.  But it really does look like this left over hurricane action {now just a big Low system}, might help us out.

I've loved the clear skies and beautiful sunshine but as we all know, we must have the rain too.

Quentin, my Dad once told me that at the moment my Mom gave birth to me, Sioux Falls was in the middle of one of the biggest thunderstorms that he had ever seen, and strangely enough, I've always had a liking for rainy weather. But after we've had four or five days of cloudy, wet weather, it begins to wear on me, if you know what I mean.

Just read that Phoenix, AZ got rocked by some pretty hearty t'storms last week.  Haven't talked to the family out there to see what there experiences were.  My sister and brother-in-law have a lot of trees in their yard (I think he's tried to recreate SE Michigan in Phoenix) - 100 mph winds would certainly have caused some damage.

The soreness of my kayak trip is finally wearing off.  Next time I'll go a little easier...

Beautiful day here.  I'll be interested in seeing how our current crop of storms wanders - sometimes they hold together enough that we still get some significant weather out of them.

Bearclaw and tea in the corner....
