The soups are just about ready (they're on the stove, in big pots); all I need to do is make the cornbread, and make some hot sandwiches.  Think I'll fix hot roast beef sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches, fried bologna sandwiches, and will even fix a few PB&J sandwiches.

Joe, if you've got a balmy 18, our outside temps of 27, 28 must be a real heat wave!!Wink [;)]Laugh [(-D]

CW, you might want to make sure the pot of hot chocolate is full.  After folks check out my "Cold" thread, they'll probably be over to warm up....

It's all of 18 here, and it's noon.  At least the sun is out.

One of the neat parts of staying at the Hotel Utica (where we stay when we work the Polar Express - Sorry, Bergie - hard not to mention the name of the place) is that many of the rooms have a view, if distant, of the CSX Chicago Line (which I may have mentioned before).

Proof:

The buildings along the tracks on the left side of the picture (just follow the line of stacks over that way) are the Susquehanna shops.  Just above them, that white swath is the Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern line to Lyons Falls (originally Utica and Black River, then Rome, Watertown & Ogdensburg, then NYC, etc) over which we run the Polar Express trains.

Sorry for the resolution - all I had with me was my trusty cell phone/camera.  I was staying on the seventh floor.

The picture was taken during a nice, sunny lull in our storm.  False hope.  See the "Cold" thread for what it looked like a couple of hours later....

Tree - you live in the midwest up there don't you.  You can't tell the difference between your surroundings and what it looks like here.  Looks very peaceful.  I like that!

If they whistle out there Larry I bet you can hear that for miles & miles.  That "Cold" thread did it's thing on me...I'll take a cup of hot chocolate!

Mook,
My brother-in-law's family in Valley Falls, KS still has 2" of ice on almost everything.  If it wasn't for their generators...they'd be popsicles by now.  And they're supposed to get more snow on top of the ice!

Over the weekend I recorded a wind chill of -10 already.  We have ~ 8"-9" of snow on the ground.  This week will be a 'warm' one for us: two days near 30 degrees!

I brought in some home-made chocolate/mint chocolate/chocolate bars and peanut butter balls for a snack!

Now now, Brian:  no munching on the sweets, until after you eat your supper!!Wink [;)]

I've replenished the soups for tonight, and made more cornbread, and heated up the last of the chili.

Dan, thanks for bringing in the treats!!  That was very nice of you!!

Larry, that was a nice picture from your hotel room.  With my eyes, I had to enlarge the picture in order to see the train!!

The CSX Chicago Line is the old NYC "Water Level Route", in this case along the Mohawk River - nice and flat.  If you want to leave Utica north or south, however, the only way is UP.

Good Tuesday morning, everyone!  Very pleasant this morning, with a temp of 30 degrees outside.  Think I heard that our temp is to go up into the mid to upper 40s today.  That will be nice!!

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate and hot water for tea are ready.  On the warmer bar this morning:  all the regular breakfast items; including Mookie's 'beagles' and Larry's bear claws.

Any requests for lunch today?

Grampaw - I didn't realize the carolinas got that cold.  How high up are you?  We are at 1100 and it gets mighty cold - but then that's what the plains are supposed to do - bake and freeze.

Morning Mook. We are around 85' asl. Actual location is exactly 100 miles straight north of Charleston. Yes, it get's cold at times. The night the first POWs were returned from Hanoi, it got down to 0 and in the past, less than 10 in the morning wasn't uncommon. I suspect global warming.....

....J, check that weather a bit closer....Northern parts of Florida were in the 20's yesterday morning.  We personally, have seen it in the 20's in central Florida about 30 miles north of Orlando.  Eustis, Tavares and even Sanford areas.

For reference in different area elevations:  Ours here in Muncie...937'.

Our home area in Pennsylvania is:  2100'.  So the automobile can get a bit better gas milage making the trip back to Muncie when we do that since we're coming "down hill" for over a 400 mile stretch of over a 1000'.  And yes, it really is noticable.  I can make the trip either way with out stopping for gas, but one can really see it on the gauge, more remains when making the western trek.  Even against the prevailing western wind.  {My trivia for the day}.

And....the sun is out and will be melting snow and ice today...!

Good morning everyone. It's 48 degrees F. outside and lightly raining as I type this. (Grabs big mug of hot coffee and a bear claw)

I request pots of thick, hot soup such as New England clam chowder, French onion soup, and minestrone. Dinner [dinner]

Q - our sun came out yesterday and today and so far hasn't done anything except shine in our eyes!

I just can't get over the fact that some of the places that should be warm for Xmas are freezing.  And I know there are mts on the east coast - and that is where the cold should be.  But down on sort of flat land - it should be toasty.

So I can't move anywhere and get away from the cold, except maybe south Texas - and then I would have to put up with the humidity.  San Diego is nice, but a whole lot of people had that idea first, so now it is too crowded.  Guess I should stay home and just be quiet.

Heat wave here today, we're up to 31 degrees and the trees are shedding ice like crazy.

Mook, I've pondered that question quite a bit lately as I look forward to retirement, and I've come to the conclusion that there's no place in this country where one can live comfortably all year round, San Diego included (remember the wildfires?).  Since I dislike heat and humidity worse than I dislike cold, which I can compensate easier for by adding layers of clothes, I'm convinced that I'm going to stay put here in Iowa.

....J, That temp I mentioned earlier down in Florida is not the norm....But....it can happen, and does...but doesn't usually last too long.  When  we {up here in our area have cold Canadian air sweep down over the area, sometimes if it is a large enough system, it will go all the way down to Florida and hence, the temps drop.

I've also seen the temps in central Florida around Christmas near 90 degrees....and as for south Texas, haven't I heard of it {not too long ago}, snowing in Brownsville...!!!  That's next to Mexico, on the Rio Grande....!  Believe it was in just the last year or so....

Doing testing out in the Kingman, Az. area years ago down on Yucca Flats...where it was almost 70 degrees we'd see large chunks of ice that had fallen off semi's that had just come across the 7000' ele. at Flagstaff.....It was a weird sight to see that with the temps that warm. That was of course in the Wintertime....

Q - the west I know a little more about - Brownsville was beautiful at Xmas - but incredibly humid at Easter.

Flagstaff - used chains to get out of the area.  Scared me to death!  Unlike Brian - as I get older, the heat isn't as bad and the cold is worse.  Guess I am finally going through my cool down stage.

Nebraska has changed a lot in the years - little less extreme - more moderating.  Getting a little drier - maybe in another 50 years I will find it really liveable.....  Laugh [(-D]

....I would think Brownsville would have a tendency to be humid all the time being right on the Rio Grande.

And yes, I know it is almost always Summerlike down there, but freak weather situations can change most places, briefly.

Bob, haven't heard from her lately.  Gonna have to check on her, and see how they are all doing!  Will let you know whenever I hear from her.  I've got several emails out, to missing patrons, but haven't heard back from any of them yet!  Now, I'm really beginning to wonder about them!!

Got supper on the warmer bar.  Some of the soup is left over from lunch, and I've also fixed pizzas for tonight.  So, on our TUESDAY NIGHT PIZZA FEST menu:

1.  Anchovie
2.  Cheese w/extra cheese
3.  Goetta
4.  Hawaiian
5.  Pepperoni/mushroom
6.  Pepperoni/mushroom/onion
7.  Sausage/pepperoni
8.  Supreme

After I got back from my trip to the library this afternoon, I started baking cookes:  as in, Christmas Cookies.  We've got all shapes:  bells, angels, reindeer, Santa, elves, Christmas trees, stars, stockings, and tin soldier shaped cookies.  Some have icing, some have sprinkles, and some have names on them.  If you find any with your name on them, go for them!!  Know I'll be baking more, between now and next Tuesday.  Oops [oops]Think I just gave away a big hint as to tonight's dessert!Wink [;)]Big Smile [:D]

My sister has been after me to retire and move to Phoenix.  Used to be you could say it wasn't the heat, it was the lack of humidity.  Apparently, however, due to all the man-made lakes that have sprouted up in the valley of the sun, the humidity is becoming a factor....

I'll stay here in the snow country.  Like Modelcar said - I can always add another layer.  Taking off too many layers leads to things like indecent exposure.....
