Well! This maybe a, No it is a first for the diner. A post made from a ship. Yes I'm presently 250nm East of Halifax off the continenetal shelf. We got a new satelite system installed that gives us internet capability but it is slower than a camelback burning paper but better than the alternative.
Conditions have been "lumpy" the last few days so much I haven't been able todo much modeling. Actually I dumped my 2-10-2 that I have been kitbashing on the deck after we took an unsuspected roll. Happy to say there was no apparent damage but none the less I've halted modeling ops until the seas die down which may be never. We're watching the storm track over the eastern seaboard and by all indicators we should only see ther remnants by the time it passes us to the South... We hope.
Richard: I hope this thing spares you as I heard one report this morning state there is the same energy in the centre of this storm as a Cat. 2 Hurricane. Scary indeed.
Well I don't know when I'll get a chance to log on again so until then Stay safe and above the High Water Mark and I'll try to do the same

I'm not sure exactly how slow that would be, but it can't be quick.
Technology is pretty amazing sometimes, huh? That fact that you can even do that is really quite remarkable!

Ahh, that was a great lunch, went back for seconds of that lentil soup.
I noticed a first for me, not only did I make it to the 10 most wanted list (active), I actually made #1. Too much time on my hands, guess it's time to actually go back to work, whether I'm ready or not. Need to climb back into the saddle.

Good afternoon everyone, the winds continue, the rains are heavy at times, but lessening in frequencies. There have been wind gusts at over 50 mph here, but just off the coast they are blowing at hurricane force, CAT2 near 1st quadrant. We received 3.78" rain here so far, tree branches down all over the yard, just after we cleaned everything up two weeks ago. I have one more burn remaining on my 1st fire permit, but that will have to wait until at least Saturday or Sunday because the sun is not going to re-appear until FRIDAY sometime...what a week!!
The good thing so far is that there is not a drop of water in the basement, and we have not lost power or cable services even with limbs down all over the place....real lucky so far. The brooks, streams, rivers, ponds and lakes are so high that even the Beavers have run for cover and are waving white flags!
RYAN: I guess we don't have to worry about forest fires anymore this Spring do we? I hope it dries out next week, I want to get the garden rototilled.
FERGIE: Good to hear from you. From your location, it looks like the storm will indeed pass to the south of you and head northeasterly away from you, although you will see some good sized ocean swells. Sorry the hear that the 2-10-2 hit the deck, luckily it didn't become a 4-20-4!!! So you won't be back home until mid May? Which islands are you stopping at?

GARRY: Talking about RR Stocks....Guess who just bought 39,027,430 stocks in BNSF? That is worth $3.23 Billion dollars, so his company, Berkshire Hathaway now owns 10.9% of BNSF. Does Warren know something????? Warren does his homework, and his companies are A1, so he obviously is VERY IMPRESSED with BNSF.
My heartfelt thoughts and prayers of anyone who might have had relatives/friends that were among the 33 students killed at Virginia Tech today by a young man who obviously was very disturbed mentally and socially.
Later guys,
Hello.........
Regret to announce that all of the red velvet cake has been consumed.... (...burp...)
Wow, you guys along the east coast are getting slammed with weather. Very nice here today, but I won't rub it in. Bad weather can hit anywhere including here.
Dick, I had some fun with my stock broker regarding railroad stock. His firm was advising clients several months back not to buy railroad stock. I knew better. At that time I made a bit of money selling put options for BNSF Ry. Last week I heard about Warren Buffet's investment. So, I called my broker towards the end of last week. I said I was glad that Warren Buffet followed my advice even though my stock broker would not. Next, (here's the good part), I was sitting at the computer with a web page open for ittsounds.com which sells sound effects circuits for MRR's. You can click on each sound they offer and listen to it on the computer. So, with speakers on, I clicked on diesel horns, steam loco whistles, crossing bells, track clicking sounds, and so on........ The guy has quite a sense of humor himself ( a practical joker). He was laughing quite a bit......... but then I told him it was a bull market while clicking on the cattle sounds. ..... So far my acount has not been cancelled......
Well, it's nice to have fun, but it's certainly a sad day in Virginia. Some events will never be understood. Prayers to Virgina Tech's students, staff, parents, and responding police.
Bobk......... thinking of you. I know it's a sad time for you. Blessings to you, your daughter, your Mom and other family members.
Thinking of others, too. ( Luc's Gloria. Trent. )
Also, RT had some tests. Did he get back with us. hope you're okay, RT....
sue... glad you like P2K.
Jeff ............. you're moving right along with the scenery.
Colby ........thanks for showing your work, too.
FERGIE ...... hey that's a first allright. Not just visiting the diner from a remote spot out there. ....but....... I've not ever heard of a 2-10-2 falling onto the deck of an ice breaker before now. Also, I do not envy you being out there at sea with big waves. Not in the least. Reminds me of a trip to Claifornia. We thought it would be neat to take a "whale ride" off Monterey. Well, I found out I can get sea sick. So did just about all the passengers. I wonder what the whales thought as they observed a boatload of people leaning over the railings and puking into the ocean! ................ you had to remind me..........
Everbody............ TV's up and hooked to satelite system. I bypassed the VCR and DVD stuff for now. Now, we have two TV's connected in the TV room. That will change when we decide how to re-arrange furniture later.
Best wishes, everybody!

Good evening guys, still getting hit with rains......this storm is now so big, that it is 1600 miles in size from North to South, with the eye of the LOW just about at Boston, and 1200 miles from East to West. To make matters worse, the doggone storm is RETROGRADING!! That means, it wobbles around and backs up inland again like top that spins on a floor. The fetch for moisture is an amassing 600 miles off the New England coastline, just bringing bands upon bands of rain inland on Northeast winds.
Some small dams in New Hampshire are in danger of bursting, so people downstream have been evacuated. Many people are without power, telephone or cable service. The storm is not supposed to pull away until Friday.
GARRY: That was a great idea with the cattle sounds.....I can just imagine his response.
PAUL: It must be catching because Lorraine would never cut grass, or even try to get on the lawn tractors...now, she "owns" the big Wheel Horse 18hp tractor, she absolutely loves to cut the grass up back and into the paths in the woods. She finds it relaxing and loves to watch nature as she rides around. Now if I only can get her to like painting the house, or weeding the veggie garden.
RT: Good luck tomorrow with your stress test. Try to relax and think about trains or your layout plans, anything to get your mind off the test.
SUE: Lisa's town in Raymond, NH has been hit hard with this storm. I know that the phone lines are all dead, and they have no 911 response, I heard that the Verizon tel office was flooded. Raymond is about 20 miles inland from the coast, and the land is fairly flat to the coast, so there is nothing to break the winds.
Time to hit the sack, after midnight here on the east coast.
I was looking around for some of the old hands, looked high and low, guess I should have known you all would be through here sooner or later!
This is the first time I've been on the site since it all got fancy, sure takes less time to get the posts up to read, and it looks like a pretty good site, all in all.
So what happened to the old Coffee Shop? How many posts finally ended up on it?
From what I've seen, it looks like this fine establishment has at least as good a menu as the Shop. Still has a good view of the tracks, that's all that is really important, now isn't it?
Since my last visit, which I can't remember really when it was, we've (Amyjo and I) have just been travelin' along, singin' a song, side by side. We visited Oahu, went to the Hawaiian Railroad Museum, great people and very neat. Biggest engine there was a 44 tonner. Got to stay with my Tech Sarge sis in law on Hickam Field, I was in WWII history heaven! If all goes right....boy, there's a pretty worthless line...we get to go back next year, if we save our $.
Also spent more time on Lake Superior's shores, at White Fish Point, got to see bunches of lake boats, the 1,000 footers are spetacular.
A new ethanol plant is opening just to the east of us, it is on an NS branchline that sees fairly decent traffic, about 2 trains a day going to Dunkirk with glass making material and grain cars for the Anderson's Terminal, now traffic is doubled, and it looks like it will stay that way for quite some time.
Just visited the new RMC website, it looks great. It only bodes well for the hobby to have the 2 leading mags running impressive websites. This hobby has grown so fast in the past 10 years, I honestly can't keep up with it.
Hopefully I'll check back in here more than I have been, just to keep in touch with the greatest hobby....welll, you know the rest.
Good morning ! from Indiana.

Near a cornfield in Indiana...
Good Morning, Zoe, an order of hash browns and couple of scrambled eggs, glass of Ed’s OJ, and a cup of coffee. Make that two cups - need to wake up for work today!
Had one rather long on-call last night (until about 11:30), and then about 3 something this morning, my upstairs neighbor woke me up with his walking around in his bedroom (above mine), making the floor creak... Ah well, tonight I can get back to a somewhat regular sleep again.Still trying to (sort of) get caught up on a few pages of posts. Had started last night, but had to save it when the pager went off.JR - nice layout (and pics) (but hey, I'm partial to a nice yard...)! Robert, good to see you back, though sorry to hear about how things have been going. I haven't forgotten that matter we discussed, just temporarily delayed. Still will be coming along. Bob K. - we still have a ways to go - we are just laying down the track that'll connect up to the swing bridge. Still have almost no scenery done in the areas leading to the bridge (the plaster cloth is laid down, but the water under the bridge isn't poured or painted or anything yet). We were shooting for running trains by the 5th (of this month...), so we're a bit behind schedule. Ah well. Sounds like you had a good weekend, and the Weekend Photos look great! Now, just don't pull a Tim-the-Toolman on us..RRDude, looking forward to seeing what you've come up with for the new layout. About taking up the track, that might depend on how it was fastened down (glue, nails, all of the above). I've never had to do that, so I'll let others tell you what would work better.

Our heartfelt condolences, sympathies, love, thoughts, and prayers go out to the victims, family members, and friends of the Virginia Tech massacre that occurred yesterday. May you have the strength and courage to continue forward, GO HOKIES!
Blacksburg, VA is only a 4 hour drive from our home here in North Carolina. Our friend Mike used to be a recruiter for IBM and he made frequent trips to VT and knows a graduate student who is attending there now. He has not heard from him yet, we are praying and thinking of him at this time.
Fergie, great to get your post from the sea! That is a start, not sure how slow that is, but at least you getting some connectivity.

Jeff, okay, got it, I will keep that list for future reference.
Dick, what an interesting and confounded day with the wind! Upon his arrival from school yesterday afternoon, Ben found a large pet carrier kennel next to the steps of our front porch. No animal inside, but just a towel. No name or identification marks on it either, we have no idea as to how it got there except for the wind. Oh, and the garbage and recycle bin were blown over 20 yards from the side of the house to the end of the drive way. Crazy weather, we got over 4" rain on Sunday, and now wind gusts to 60 mph on Monday.
Do you know that with all of that wind, the humidity was only 6% when I checked the outdoor gauge after work?
Hey Garry, come on man, you ate all the cake? At least I was able to get a small slice before it was all gone....
RT, good luck today with the stress test!
Back!
Philnrunt, Welcome back! Glad to see you are still with us! The powers that be (Bergie and such) said that the old Coffee shop was getting too big for its britches. In other words, since it was so large it was slowing down the MR forum and that it would be locked at the end of the year 2006. So in preparation a new thread / Diner was started on Jan. 1. Here is the link to the Coffee Shop thread for reviewing, but no more posting:

Good morning everyone, snowing like crazy here this morning, the grass is nearly all covered. This is one strange storm. Vermont has been hit hard, in the city of Rutland alone, there are 30,000 people without power. The high winds coming down off the Green Mountains caused a downburst of high winds that flattened trees onto homes, power lines, etc. There are now well over 100,000 people without power in total over the 6 state region, and that does not include New York, New Brunswick Canada, Nova Scotia Canada, or Quebec Canada. In far northern Maine, it is still snowing hard with depths over 2 feet now on top of hwat was already on the ground. We have dams in this area that are in serious condition to breech or fail completely. Many roads are washed out and homes flooded that never had problems before. The sea walls in Revere and other areas along the coastline have been taking a pounding at high tide with 20-25 foot waves on top of the flood tide, and officials are afraid that some of the sea walls may fail. No let up until Friday.
RYAN: 6% RH????? I have never heard of a Relative Humidity that low.....we are at 94% right now. It is hard to imagine a storm so big that it reaches from Florida to Canada along the east coast.
JEFF: The layout photos came out real good, you are making great progress, I like your work.
Here is a interview result that I thought you guys would appreciate:
Two young engineers applied for a single position at a computer company. They both had the same qualifications. In order to determine which individual to hire, the applicants were asked to take a test by the department manager.
Upon completion of the test, both men had each missed only one of the questions. The manager went to the first applicant and said, ''Thank you for your interest, but we've decided to give the job to the other applicant.'' "And why would you be doing that? We both got nine questions correct," asked the rejected applicant.
"We have based our decision not on the correct answers, but on the question you missed," said the department manager.
"And just how would one incorrect answer be better than the other?" the rejected applicant inquired.
''Simple,'' said the department manager, ''Your fellow applicant put down on question #5, 'I don't know.' You put down, 'Neither do I.'''
PHILNRUNT: We thought you fell off the end of the earth Phil.......did your computer break?? Ed and Flip have been out looking for you for months...now we have to send DUKE out to find ED and FLIP!!!! This will cost you big time young man.........AWOL from the Diner is a serious offense you know......
Have to go, just got a call from my DIL, the youngest grandson Sean age 15 months is at the hospital, he has swelling near his ear and cheek. I hope it isn't the mumps!!! I never had the mumps and I was all around him on Sunday!!!

RT ....... I'll be thiinking of you on the stress tests. My bet: You'll be okay.
good of Jeff to post pix of progress.
Time to hustle my caboose. Toot a Loo!
Bye.
The Northeaster were having killed 2 people yesterday. a grandmother and her 4year old grandgaughter were swetp away while trying to cross a whashed out road. a number of homes on the coast are gone. 25ft waves were reported in Portland, even bridges either flooded or washed out. some roads were undermined (the dirt was washed out from under it)and collapsed, trees were up rooted, fully loaded dumpsters were moved down Main st. in one town. In my neighborhood tree limbs 5in. across were broken off. and the downspout (the tube that runs from the gutters to the ground) that was near my bedroom window was blown off by the wind. Very exciting weather here in Maine.
Morning All
Wasn't sure if I'd get on this a.m. but here I is. Blowing 30-35 kts out of the NE, which is the direction we are headed as our next set of Science stations are on the South Western Grand Banks and yes we're doing a little watoozy this morning as it's getting lumpy again. Actuall got work done on one of the Tenders last lnight without incident! Oh happy days!! Got the Tsunami decoder and speaker in, the deck cut out and the oil tnder converted to coal as I built a cowl around the forward end and will mesh over the speaker and fill the well with "coal".
No I don't like taking gravol as it cqn dope you up and save it for special events like hurricanes and other events. It takes me a day to get over the motion and then I'm fine until I get home and then the house rocks and rolls for the first day or so.
Good News/Bad News! I;m no longer on the Fox as they did a major shuffle this year and am now on the Research Vessel Hudson (Put down gear to 4000 meters this morning to sample the water column). Nice ship but old and runs on 4 ALCOs believe it or not. This is good as I won't be in the Arctic just in case I have a emergency at home. Good news for me as the Fox is being transferred to Newfoundland along with Canada's Largest Icebreaker the Louis S St Laurent. For reasons that we cannot fathom, have once again destroyed our morale and I shall not delve into here as I may say the wrong thing in public.
Philnrunt: My my thought you'ld dropped off the edge of the world! Good to see you and hopefully you'll make your way here more often. The old CS shut down New Years with Dik and Company being tossed through the front window! Bergie needed us to vacate as we were using up a lot of memory with "Our" antics. This place was a high class joint until Dick and Company came too the next day and it's been down hill from then on... Go figure
Dick: Good to see you're still afloat as we were watching the storm coming up and know home got hit hard with rain, surge and wind.
Anyway I gtg so we'll see you all later
