Good evening folks: A JR Regular please Zoe, and a slice of banana bran loaf with Becel. I’m only 10 pages or so behind, so I thought I’d better drop in and catch up on things. First of all, condolences to any affected personally by the VT tragedy. One of the profs killed was Canadian. She and her husband moved to VT from Truro, Nova Scotia. He teaches Horticulture, and she taught French. In fact she started a French language school in Truro.

Second, and Welcome Back to those new,(Bob K., AztecEagle, Chuck ) and returned (Phil & Rob L.,Dan; Alex & David).

Mike:

some look better than those high dollor kits.
…Coo, thanks! Being cheap is a major strategy for my mrr-ing! The interlock tower is coming along nicely, which is why I’ve taken a break to grab a coffee and look around. I’ve discovered that with the roof in place the interior doesn’t show too much, so I can leave modeling any interior detail until I decide to light the thing. Thanks for the photos, they are just what I’ll need. I didn’t realize the levers were on the floor like that. I had figured a desk, but the electrical relay thingy is great. Mind you, in N it will have to be mostly paint FXs! (CapeJim, thanks for the Walthers.com suggestion, but all the pics I saw there were exteriors only.)

Sue:

We have Yarrow that I have tried to kill unsuccessfully. It is somewhat invasive.
…that’s the one! It’s in the roadside ditches here, and we don’t get it in the garden at all. Napweed is another matter, and is everywhere and much harder to dig up. What’s worse, I haven’t figured a mrr use for it yet!

Colby, thanks for the shots of your layout. I like your use of roads, it’s a feature I’ve only really tried to do on this present layout. Before, they were just bridges and such leading off the layout in a couple of places. BTW, that red SFX loco was great!Thumbs Up [tup]

Jerry:

is that tower still in use? Not many left...
…Can’t speak for the tower in the photo. However, the stairs are modern steel construction, and freshly painted, so there is a chance it’s in use. Don’t know who posted the photo. It may have been in the Coffee Shop. Thanks to Ryan’s nifty CS locator software, it may be possible to check.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Trent:

The reason given was my file was filed under the WRONG Dr. and WRONG letter of the alphabet.
… but at least it was YOUR file! A friend of ours was treated with the wrong meds because the file clerk ( or whoever) had given the Dr. someone else’s (similar name) file, and the Dr. hadn’t seen the huge variance in conditions!Banged Head [banghead] Censored [censored]

JR: Thanks for the pics of your BIL-once-removed’s layout. Looking forward to seeing more of that in due course.

Garry: Your strata technique reminds me of the stacked ceiling tile method, but more rock-like with the plaster. Do you score in any lines, or leave it as is? Speaking of scores, what’s the score in that volleyball game up to now?Big Smile [:D]

Alex: Did you get the track up yet? Jerry’s water soaking method works really well if it was white glue that was used. I soak a small towel, wring it out, and lay it on the track, pressing it down for contact. Go away and do something else until the glue is showing white. That’s how I tell it’s time to get out the scraper. Even if you are doing a new layout, can you salvage the old track and re-use it perhaps?

Jeff: Those buildings just keep on coming. No wonder you’ve lost count! They sure make those scenes.Thumbs Up [tup]

Fergie: Heading for the Grand Banks with this Nor’ Easter does sound lumpy! At any rate in the Hudson you won’t be rescuing crews stuck in the pack ice off Fogo. Glad the loco survived its dive.

RT:

Good news from the doc RT! I know the Mrs. will be happy now! (You too!) Philip
Sign - Ditto [#ditto]

cwchuck: Our grandkids have been straightened out considerably (from a no so good discipline situation) by their mother (single parent) being able to get them into Cadets.

Dick:

but it could get worse as the storm moves by NS sometime on Thursday and Friday.
…The sea calmed down a whole lot overnight, and this morning’s high tide wasn’t even worth a photo! It’s pretty much over for us, but where Fergie’s headed may be another matter.
Take off the roof and use tweezers?
…exactly professor! I’m not gluing the roof on just yet so I can do that sort of thing.

Phil:

Ed- So how are the oranges and mangos and papayas and papooses all doing? Hope all are doing great.
…we haven’t heard from Ed in quite a while. I’ll email him and let him know you are back. Maybe he’ll come on in too.

Ryan:

Hey Der John! When you going to invite us up to your place? That back yard view is just great, and I bet the sunrise views are spectacular!
…Just be aware that we don’t have any guest rooms! (Kris has one spare bedroom for her office, and the train room is in the other.) Apart from that, when can you come? The sunrises? What’s a sunrise? (retirement has it’s up side!)

Mark:

Micromark E-mailed me, and my connie JUST got shipped today, and it should arrive within 1-8 days.
…we took delivery today of a case of canned mackerel that I ordered over six weeks ago when I still had more than six weeks supply left. I ran out late last week! So, it’s not just mrr stuff that gets delayed

Good Evening, Chloe, I figured I needed to come into the Diner before they towed it away, thinking it was closed! Shock [:O] Cup of hot chocolate for me, please. I'll be nice to DerJohn, since he's buying. Wink [;)]

JR, that's some water problem in your shop. Shock [:O] Good thing you did have the floor sockets out of commission for years before.

I think our rain (mist, really) is pretty well gone, maybe to join its big brother out in the Atlantic? Hope all of you on the east coast are starting to dry out and drain down.

Hoople, good to hear the Connie is coming on the way to you. It probably still will seem like forever, though, before it arrives.

Hey, Paul, you sure you're retired? You sound like you've been having busier days lately than mine have been. Was the calf okay that the momma 'forgot' after being left behind when she came home?

We may have to go get the bloodhounds and have Duke use 'em to track down Ed's whereabouts, unless Ed shows up soon. I know! Let's announce a party in the Diner on Friday night! That'll bring him in, right? Evil [}:)]Wink [;)]

Looked through some MR's tonight, but not much else in the MRR'ing department for me. Guess I'll mosey on home and catch some Zzz [zzz]Zzz [zzz]

Blessings and prayers for all those in need of them (seems like a lot lately),

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Sure is quiet in here at this time of the day. But that just makes it easier to watch the trains rumble by the diner.

Silverspike- Thanks for asking about Runt, she's right here by my side, doing what all good dogs are doing at this time of the morn, snoring like a grizzily bear. It always amazes me how such a small punkin can make soooo much noise. I've thought about recording it and marketing a line of steam and diesel sound effects.

grayfox and der- With the recent weather, I'm tempted to find that train Ed hopped and climb on board with him! I'll zip him a mail too, maybe we can drag him back in here. He is a fantastic source of information.

pcarrell- florida phil (flip) and I had the same problem, we thought it was us they were talking to when it was the other. Tell you what, if I read something that makes no sense whatsoever to me, I'll assume it's either for you (or from my wife).  Deal?

Paul B- I like Texas, it has a huge amount to offer, but I love those lakes. Both of 'em beat the cornfields around here!

Good Morning All,

Still damp out but at least it's not raining just now. I'm beginning to feel like I live near Seattle. Open discussion night last night at the museum weekly meeting but no real sense of where we need to be going beyond the boards. Some interesting nuts and bolts" things though. Rail museums are a bit different than most as we need to  restore our own exhibits as well as fund raise to just keep the doors open. It's tough to get peole to volunteer.

No model layout work either this week yet. I do want to get a seperate power source for the million or so switch machines (all twin coil type - mostly Peco and Atlas) and in researching have found many familiar names attached to the posts that help (right DER?)

If I remember correctly, Ed in Mexico is having issues getting access to post but can monitor ok. He does pop up occasionally on trainboard and such.

Luc - Any update on Glos' condition? The two of you remain in our thoughts and prayers.

All for now - back to the grindstone and all.   CUL,J.R.

Good morning everybody.......

How about a carmel pecan breakfast roll and coffee this time.... (hurry before Ryan gets here and its all of them).....    thanks....

From DER   "Garry: Your strata technique reminds me of the stacked ceiling tile method, but more rock-like with the plaster. Do you score in any lines, or leave it as is? Speaking of scores, what's the score in that volleyball game up to now? " ....... Der ...  the v.b. game has yet to score a point because the ball has yet to cross over the net.  It's been suspended in mid air for more than a year.

Continueing with Der... Regarding the strata technique, broken plaster looks better than broken ceiling tile because the broken edges have rock-like texture. The surfaces are porous and colors will penatrate into the plaster. For color (that's "colour" in Canadianese), I use watered down acrylic paints.  The method for my colors is as follows. First, brush on a very thin layers of yellow paint while spraying frequently with detergent water. It looks very funny at this point, but no worries. Wait a day for it to dry. Then do the same with brown color (raw siena or whatever you want). Wait a day. Do the same with light gray. Wait a day. Do the same with thinned black paint.  Wait a day.  ... If any of the "rocks" don't look right, brush horizontally with small wire brush to remove most of paint, and repaint with same series of steps. ...Brush on thinned white glue and sprinkle on some woodland scenics stuff as needed. .......  "plant" trees and shrubs as needed. .........add fencing if you want..   works for me.  .... Practice first on scrap plaster pieces, and experiment with different colors to match rocks you are modeling.  Also, I use old grated chees containers for shakers for scenery stuff.

philnrut.........if you like lakes, feel free to visit Land Between the Lakes here in western KY!

Everyone:   Happy Model Railroading

Well we're enroute to south of Sable Is and should be there by this evening. Gales out of the NE are still blowing but should subside by saturday. It's been blowing NE gales for the last week so we are still rolling but it's on our tail so it's not too bad. Good thing is I haven't missed a meal yet, well maybe not so good as it was Shrimp and Haddock for lunch and Striploin for supper. Grub is good here.

Got the second tender carved out for speaker installation and the Oil hatch is gone and a well made for the coal. So work is doable even with this puppy rolling upto 15 degrees though it makes sleeping and eating a challenge at times.

Funny you should mention that! A bunch of us saw that on the TV last night and shook our heads.  We've been up there before helping them as this is a yearly occurance... Please don't get me wrong it is a very dangerous situation thes guys get themselves into but it happens every year. Yes you heard me right the ice packs into the NE coast and someone always gets nipped and stuck including the Icebreakers. I've been stopped on the west coast of Newfoundland for a couple of days and can't move until the wind lets up to relieve the pressure.

Philnrunt: I remember (because I choose to) several of us warning you of the Honey do list! But NOooo  you choice not to listen or pay head, Next round is on you Pls and tanks.

Trent: Pink? Will we never rid ourselves of the pink demon? probabl not but I will say this no pink in my paint box!

RT: You weren't napping, no sir, you was hibernating if I recall correcetly and it took us several weeks to find your shadow.

Dick: Next trip is the current analysis as we will be carrying one of the Oceans leading experts so it will be interesting though I don't fancy a trip to the Flemish cap this time of year.

Phil: Sorry old man we have pics of you and Flo so you're  BUSTED!! Big Smile [:D]

Anyway I must be off as lunch is just around the corner

I'll be over at RR dude's house today working on his layout and getting some scence into him, cause right now he does not have a table ready for his new layout.

And thanks to all of you who liked the pics and movies.

Good morning and top 'o' the day to all of ye. Had a pleasant visit from a gentleman by the name of Duke Yerman yesterday and showed him what I'm doing on my layout and also showed him just how quiet Athearn BB locos can be. I think they surprised him.

Mornin' folks!

What you all know good? Where yat?

Dick, I have two gauges and both verify the low %rH. As a matter of fact, yesterday they both were registering around 20%, now the evenings and nights the rH % will go into the 50-70% and then once the dew evaporates in the morning it drops again. Oh, and I have a similar clock/temp/rH gauge in the train room too, similar readings there too. It is dry here! Almost like dessert conditions in terms of rH%.

Good luck with the dentist!

J.R. sorry to hear about the water intrusions, but hope all is on the dry out now!

Garry, okay, what is burgoo?

Paul, congratulations on the broadband! Now you are flying eh!!!

Der John, I was just kidding, the view is spectacular though. We are not planning any long or extended trips this year, just a few short weekend jaunts to the Smoky Mountains and then to the South Carolina coast. LOL, yea, sunrise, what's that!!!

Jim, a party in the Diner on Friday night? Let's make it a pot luck thing, and I'll bring dessert.....what time do we get underway?

Phil, glad to hear that Runt is still a great companion, dogs are a mans best friend indeed! And 3:21 AM is kind a quiet anywhere you go!

Mike, we were expecting rain too, but might just get a few sprinkles this afternoon. Guess I will have to water the flower plants if it doesn't rain again soon.

RT, have a safe trip and say hello to everyone!

Catch you all later,

Ryan

Good morning everyone...the jaw feels a little better today after the 2 1/2 hour marathon at the Dentist yesterday. I found out something interesting while talking to the dentist.......in the old days of silver fillings, it was necessary to keep the silver filling in place mechanically by undercutting a ridge in the tooth to sort of lock the silver filling in place. Today they use some sort of resin filling that is made up of porcellin powder, that adheres to the tooth surface ( like glue) so no undercutting is necessary. That means that the dentis does not have drill as much tooth material away to place a filling. Also, the new fillings, unlike silver, a metal, has MUCH better heat/cold characteristics than silver, so it does not weaken over time due to expansion and contraction with heat and cold.

GLOBAL WARMING:  I saw a very interesting video yesterday, produced by the BBC, that gave the first opposing view of the "cause" of global warming. It contained some very interesting findings and more important, historical data, that shows that the "Sun" is the cause of this global warming event, in particular, sun spot activity ( storms on the surface of the sun ).I don't want to try to give all the info here, so here is the website:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4499562022478442170&q=global+warming+swindle&hl=en

FERGIE: Sable Island? About 200 miles off the NS coast? You are right in the path of the big storm, although it is pulling slowly away to the NE. The seas must be 20-30 feet !!!!!

MIKE: You are correct when you say you don't get anything done with the small grandkids there, they are a handfull for sure.

INDY PHIL: Can you get some pics of those Methanol tank trains headed east? They run this way on CSX main line to RI, but I have not been able to see them yet.

PC: No sun here yet, although a few peeks this morning as this big storm is finally pulling away. Tomorrow is supposed to be full sun , and 80 degrees by Monday!!!

J.R. : Cheer up J.R., the sun is actually peeking out through the clouds here, and is moving your way .

HOOPLE: Maybe it would have been easier to buy that loco on the west coast, you would have had it a month ago!!

PAUL: Any signs of ED down there? Have you looked over the south fence into Mexico?

J.P. Another great pitching performance from Wakefield last night, long ball helped too.

LUC: How is Glo doing, prayers continue for her to recover and be back home with family again.

If I bought it here, I still wouldn't have it, because my current $$$ plus the spent $$$ on the 2-8-0 would equal around $200, but the 2-8-0 retails for $275, so I would still be waiting, and would get one early june.

No sun here either.  Just lots of rain and gray clouds.  But the thing is, thats what God made for today, so therefore, it's beautiful!  I dare say it's even perfect!  See, we sometimes forget to thank Him for the simple things we take for granted, like air, and light.  I try to remember to thank Him for those things from time to time.  This would, after all, be a very hard (and short) life without them!

Sorry, I didn't mean to get all philosophical on you!

PC: Yes, you are so correct and I totally agree with your statements on God and appreciation. You have to be the nicest Telephone Co.person in the country!!!!

DER JOHN: Sable Island is about 250 miles off the east coast of NS, that places FERGIE in some real nasty weather and high seas....I sure hope that ship is BIG !!! and STRONG.

RYAN: WOW, I am surprised to see that you have such dry air that far south......is it mountainous where you live? What is your elevation above sea level, that might explain the dry air at times.

FOR EVERYONE:   Guys and gals, you have to see this amassing young girl, what talent, PC, et al, you will indeed be moved by this.

It's 2 in the afternoon here, so I suppose I'll still catch a few lunch people and the whole dinner crowd.

OK, whats it going to be?

Hello ........

Ryan asks about BURGOO .... here's what it is:   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgoo  Around here, the meat is usually shredded pork and includes corn and green beans as vegatables. Locals here have good recipes for it. Dinner [dinner]

Dick............actually, global warming is the results from lack of steam locomotive smoke blocking sun rays. Bring back steam locomotives and you'll see a difference. Wink [;)]  Enjoy the SUN! Cool [8D]

Jeff's correct about Athearn engines being able to run quietly.  Proper maintenance is all that's needed. Of course, I don't operate at full throttle.

Happy Model Railroading

Hey,

Colby's visiting me, and we made a short video, which we're trying to upload to the I won't say what computer. Now keep in mind, in the movie I'm just getting used to the controller Jeff gave me, Whistling [:-^]        and that no one was hurt by us "making" the video...................         Oh well, my stupid computer won't let us upload anything, so Colby's going to upload the clip at his house and post it.

PC........

Oh....oh......any of those ribs left for me!!!!!!!

Garry, thanks for the link to the BURGOO, I might have to try that the next time we are in Kentucky.....

Dick, global warming has left the building.... at least in our neck of the woods. Seems like winter is here to stay for a long time, still gets into the upper 30's at night here. Our elevation in Wake Forest is around 390 Ft. above sea level. Not the mountains, but it is the Piedmont.

And the child prodigy is amazing, does she sell that artwork?

Ah but this is where we make the mistake. It's not global warming it's Global Climate Change. Though the Arctic is warming at an alarming rate. I dare say there will be little in the way of modelling tonight as the waves are peaking at 20 feet +. Hudson is a good ship but rolls a bit.
