Good morning everyone...cloudy and cool here today so far 52F....brrrrrr. The temps here have been like a yo-yo so far this Spring. At least I won't bake today doing the wall repair job, and I should be able to finish that job today barring any unforseen events occuring. The storms of yesterday really wreaked havoc in southern New Hampshire (NH), over 17,000 lost power, big trees down, some house fires due to lightening strikes and hail damage to cars. All the storms passed to the south and west of us, not one drop of rain fell and I am HAPPY!

RYAN: Staci is staying at North Beach somewhere...that would have been quite a coincidence to meet her. How is your herb garden doing so far?

Morning folks!

Early morning thunder showers and the grass is growing again, oh boy, looks like the mower is coming out of the shed again this weekend.

Dick, sorry I missed your granddaughter in Myrtle Beach, we stayed in a condo in North Myrtle Beach.

Garry, I know, I know! But virtual pie is low, very low in calories too! Hope the Spectrum Heavy 4-8-2 repairs are speedy this time around!

RT, nice looking display shelf you got there!

Jeff, D-Day was 61 years ago today. Here is the link to the National WWII museum in New Orleans. It is devoted mainly to the history of D-Day, its original name was the National D-Day Museum, and since they added more wings and displays it was renamed. http://www.ddaymuseum.org/ A must see museum if you are ever in New Orleans.

Cheers,

Good Morning, Zoe, I'll have some of Ed's orange juice,

a cup of coffee, and some pancakes, please!

I tried to come into the Diner last night, but our servers had a sign on the door that  they were closed for the evening (stripping and waxing the floors, I think it said). So I figured I'd come back for breakfast today. Hopefully, I won't be hitting TOP again like yesterday... Ah, I see Jeff beat me to those honors today - thanks, Jeff!

Sue (aka gear-jammer) wrote:

Jim,  If you move, will the basement flood?  If the church is a temporary tenant, maybe they could use the basement.  Just a thought.

Good questions, Sue - and various club members asked the landlord just those ones (among others). We'd be getting the majority of the back of the basement area if we took it, and apparently based on history, the worst they've ever had in the basement was 5-7' in from the ramp door (one time, with a storm blowing hard from that direction). And we'd have the area further from the door than that.

The church (landlord's guess) wants our space because it's to the rear of space they are currently using for their church services, so the kids wouldn't have to go outside to the other building. But the club wanted to know if the church could help us out (e.g., by helping prep the basement area, etc.) in exchange for the money the club already has put into the layout so far (around $10,000 over five years in this building) and will end up having to replace. The landlord expressed that his preference would be that we stay where we are.

Garry, the idea of building in modular sections was mentioned if we move to the basement. I'd agree with you and others that the church people probably don't realize that this is not some 4X8 Plywood Prairie layout, nor how much time, materials and effort went into the layout. We did suggest that the landlord might have the pastor and some elders take a look at what we have built (if only so they realize that we're not going to be able to get it out in a week or two).

So Paul, does that mean that the President's name is actually George W**k Bush? Wink [;)] Oh, good luck with the corral cleaning...I'm sure it's not your favorite chore around the place.

Anyone else see on the news tonight about the Home Depot employee(s) who helped police catch some shoplifters - and got fired for it? Shock [:O] Apparently they have a policy for their employees to not chase after possible shoplifters or to call the police (though the one employee who was interviewed said he kept his eyes on the shoplifter all the way out the door and asked them for a receipt - at which point they ran and the police caught them). Boy, modern business practices make you shake your head in wonder, don't they?

RT, you have a good start there on your 'high-level' layout. Should look even better once you have room for the whole passenger consist up there! Thumbs Up [tup]

We're only at 55 F. today, but supposed to reach the 90's today. Cool [8D] May be time to turn the air conditioner back on in the apartment, I guess.

I'll see everyone later, probably around suppertime. Have a good day!

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Hello Colby. If "so out of it" means really, really dirty ............. clean it by hand with Goo Gone and a soft cloth.  Do the same for locomotive wheels if needed. Works for me.  OR use a "Brite Boy".   Also, push the track cleaning car rather than pull it. What kind is it? I found the Walthers Trainline Box car that pulls an abrasive pad is fine for normal maintenace.

Happy Model Railroading

Yes it is dirty. and I have both the Brite Boy and a track cleaning car from Model Power.

I'm working on a new layout plan and hand cleaning it as I put the track down. I can run my 0-6-0 fairly well at noch 8, but at lower speeds forget it.

Evening Gang: I started to clean out the west side of the corrals this evening. There isn't a whole lot of poop and hay on that side but I need to get it out and the ground dryed out before I move the feeder over. We went over to the creek to check out the crossing. There is twice as much silt and debries then there was last week. The field also has water standing in several places. It's going to take a week or so to dry out enough to cut and bale.

No MRRing again tonight. I have the latest MR and Trains here so I'll do some reading, that should qualify. Right now I think I'll check out and see about going to bed.

I have 3.0 which is very basic, and was thinking of getting elements, but 5.0 might be money well spent.  Thanks for the tip.

Hey guys, stopped in to let you know I'm still hangin' tough. It has been a wild and busy weekend, well since Thursday to Monday. The graduations and all the parties went extremely well. The family has mostly left now. Some of my wife's family will return next week. I know they are coming mainly for the kids. The reality of their mother's loss is hitting home with all three of them. Surprisingly, I'm doing rather well.

When I can sit and spend some time , I'll be able to get filled in on what everyones been up to. I'm getting tossed of the PC, my daughter needs it for a while.

Hello.....

Well, my Spectrum Heavy 4-8-2 has been dispatched to Philadelphia for repairs.  It ran well for the few days I had it back, but the headlight would not come on. LED is okay but not getting power from circuit board. I believe it worked fine when it left Bachmann last time, but I suspect it was bumped too much in the mail. Circuit board must have a disconnection. I'm not picking on bachmann at all.  They've been more than pleasant on the phone and seem to be doing all they can to make it right.

Okay, Jerry,  I'll see about getting photos of the IC layout soon.

We could use some rain here.  Looks like we'll get some, but if it's like the past week it will blow over and the grass will kieep burning up. Blue grass; my eye.  It's brown now and green if it has enough water. We need DaveV's forecast for the weather.

Hey Ryan, you'll ruin your reputation!  Seriously, cograts on the 6 lb loss.

Paul has a great suggestion for JimCg....... There should be some sort of compensation or at least assistance of some sort for moving the old layout.  Upon rebuilding, I strongly suggest the club use sectional construction. With sectional construction, it's possible to move if needed.

Well, time to hustle the caboose.  Bye.

Afternoon Gang:

DaveV: Congratulations on completing  the almost last step to your doctorate.  Enjoy the time on the MRR.

JimCG: How about getting an estimate from one or two of the professional layout builders and see if the church would like to pick up the tab for a like size layout in the basement? It's obvious that they have no idea of the amount of work that is involved in building a layout. There is the issue of the difference in the rent also. I wounder if they would make up the difference in that? I'm sure that you guys would like to help them out but what they ask is a pretty big deal. Don't worry about using the W word. Us retarded types can handle it.

Philnrunt: My CJ-2 was even easer to replace a battery. A lot lower in the fenders and a short reach. Don't worry about not mowing the yard, I've got plenty to keep us busy.

No MRRing today, yet. Just finishing up the yard and laying out the road. Speaking of which I should get back at.

Congrats, Mr. Volmer. I trust we'll be seeing more of you on the forum in the near future. I know how hard that schooling can be on one's private and social life. Many times there's little room in the schedule for anything else.

Well, it was a busy day at work today. I hand sanded parts for ten desks this morning and sent them back to the shop for assembly. I also got parts for fifteen more desks stained and put into the drying racks. Tomorrow they go to the poly room to be sprayed. On the schedule for tomorrow will be cutting out pieces for twenty more. After they're cut out they'll be banded and rough sanded to get rid of any scratches and/or nicks. It's going to be a busy day.

Good afternoon everyone...hot and humid today, as the upper level LOW slowly moves off the coast along with an approaching front from the west. Many severe storms as well as Tornado warnings south of us in CT.

http://www.intellicast.com/National/Radar/OneKm.aspx?location=USCT0094&animate=true

I have been doing some re-construction work on the stone wall in the front of the house, but I have to mix the mortar in small batches in a metal pail because of the threat of heavy downpours at any time. I am making the mix a little stiffer also so that it will dry quicker in case it does rain.

SUE: I have used Adobe Photoshop Elements before, and I like it very much, however with Vista, I wanted to upgrade to Ver 5.0. This new version is the "cat's meow"!!! One new feature that I tried, allows me to use a Google map, even a topo or satellite map, insert a "pin" at the location where I took the pictures, then drag the photos to that pin. I can then email those to anyone, and they pass their mouse pointer over the pin head and all the photos appear that were taken at that location.

RYAN: Did you meet my grandaughter down at Myrtle Beach? She went down there for a week with many of her graduation class to two beach houses.

Things are quiet weatherwise for the moment, so I think I will try to get more wall work done.

Afternoon folks!

We took a short extended weekend vacation to Myrtle Beach Fri. to Mon. and played in the sand for a few days. I brought home a souvenir of about 20 lbs. of beach sand, looking to sift through it and use for landscaping on the layout. Barry was just a big pain in the you know what on the beach, but we welcomed the rain we got back at home. The rain gauge measured just at 3" rain.

Good morning ........

DaveV ..........  take a bow!  Bow [bow]  ....Great news on the PHD exam! So you'll be an official weather doctor. That'll fit with all the weather posting in the diner. Perhaps, the nickname, "stormy" would fit. Cute comments, too, regarding the 4 year old. Your 105 page research paper almost attained the length of that thread you started that got people riled up. Laugh [(-D] Again it's good news. But the diners should be treating you. Steak and lobster tails for you tonight?

Well, everybody, my 4-8-2 was returned  to me from Bachmann's warrantee repair people and it runs perfectly.  HOWEVER:  the headlightlight won't work. Sad [:(] I'll be calling Bachmann to see what I need to do. The LED will work with test leads on its connections.  None of the wiring is loose or not soldered. So it must be in the circuit board. Rats.

Now who asked me this question last week?  hmmm.  I think it was Jerry.  He wanted to know if I had pictures of my friend's IC RR layout.  Not yet. But stay tuned this week and I'll see if I can get some. Another guy in the get-together is an L&N guy. And the other does UP RR.  Not many MRR's in this lightly populated area.

Happy Model Railroading!

Breakfast today is on me, everybody!!!

Well, I did it!  I poassed my PhD Oral Preliminary exams yesterday.  That, coupled with the 2 days of Written Preliminaries I took in January, officially established my doctoral candidacy.

Now all that remains is to complete my dissertation and defend it next year.  One step closer!

I have a feeling my dissertation is going to require wheels to move.  The final research prospectus alone ended up at 105 pages!

The main upshot is:  Now I have time for trains again!!!

I'm having trouble explaining to my 4-year old that Im studying to be a doctor, but not the kind that helps you when you're sick.  I finally got him to understand that I was going to be a "weather doctor."  "What does a weather doctor do, Daddy?"  Good question!  Whatever the Air Force wants me to do I guess, since they're paying for it.

Boy, I can't wait to finish this program and get back to the business of defending the country.  School's great for awhile, but I miss the kill-people-and-break-their-stuff Air Force.

Just thought I'd check in, sounds like everybody's doing ok.

Paul, now that you are done mowing your place, if you need something to do, I have this section thats gotten a bit out of hand. I'm thinking of putting up a sign that says "Exxon can mow this part" and making it a gas price protest site. Probably also helps with all that global warming going around, what with no mowing and all that tall, tall grass. Yeah, I think thats the ticket. Sorry Paul, maybe next time!Evil [}:)]

Had planned to take Thursday off to get some trainshop cleaning done, instead spent the day replacing Amyjo's battery in her Wrangler. It's not that old ('04) but boy oh boy, when they say 36 month battery, they mean it. In the old days, with CJ-5's and 7's, you slapped a battery in and if it didn't fit perfectly, you bungee'd it in and bought some threaded rod and built your own holder....or found the rod about 6 months later and wondered what THAT was for. Now, the battery has to be not only the right length, but the right height too! (that is why it took all day). The battery holder just won't adjust to anything but exactly ther right size. As I was waiting for my b-in-law to return I realized that I knew what each part of the 4.0 was, but they sure weren't the same parts I was used to dealing with. I'm sure new engines are exponentially better than the old 258 six cylinders, but I sure do miss those old workhorses. Just getting old, I reckon.

The new ethanol plant is almost on-line, train frequency should double or triple over the next few months. Looking forward to it. Hope to see something other than NS black.

Well, better get back to, let's see, how is that written? Oh yeah, w**k Disapprove [V], so you all take care, and we'll check back soon!
