Morning everyone. Haven't been in for a while. Haven't even been able to do much reading. My old supervisor retired and theres a new sheriff in town. She's really cracking the whip so I can't read as much at work. It's break time now and my work is caught up so she can't complain.
Garry, sorry to hear about the cat. My mother has a big yellow cat she named Punkin. He has always liked being around people but lately he has to be on your lap all the time. He's diabetic and gets two insulin shots a day. I wonder if he might be getting sicker and not feeling well. I cat sit when my mother travels and I would even miss him if he wasn't around. He is about 12 years old.
Has anyone seen the story about NS wanting to build a high speed freight corridor between New Orleans and New Jersey? It would parallel I-81 right through this part of PA with new yards in central MD and eastern TN. They claim it even has the support of a large part of the trucking industry. Heres a link http://content.hamptonroads.com/story.cfm?story=126181&ran=101257
Pat (the lady in my life) and I went to the East Broad Top last Saturday. It was the first time in a few years I actually road the train. I usually go there armed with a camera, tape measure, pen and note pad. She seemed to enjoy it and of course I did, even though I got a little lost on the way there.
Break is about over, better go.
everyone! Those Packham pears I dropped off the other day should be ripe and juicy now, so I’ll have one of those with a chunk of old cheese, please Zoe; and a kippered herring with some of that dark Seville orange marmalade on the side. Thanks. Oh, and a medium JR Regular, if you would be so kind. The torrential rain last night cleared the fog, so today is just grey.
The Chamber meeting was success for the museum as they agreed to pay for two sets of highway signs for the main highway through the Harbour. Then the owner of a local restaurant said he would pay for signs for the other two roads into town!
May I add to the Happy Dance and ask
DaveV: Wishing you luck on the Diet Coke thing. As an alternative to coffee, there are excellent no-sugar-added dark chocolates available. Health benefits of chocolate keep being discovered.
I’d better get on…TTFN.

Mornin,, coffee please Zoe,, going to be an ok day here, other than hot [low 90's] and having wind gust to 45 [wind advisory issued].
I dis-like this new computer, it's a pain for me to use. Course when ya aint good at it anyway, changing's hard I figure.
On D DAY,, our local news didn't have much to say bout it, but a PBS station we get, aired a 2 hour show called, D Day Memories, with some that had taken part. In-between segments, they had some interviews with some locals that were part of that day

I pick up some ground foam, under table switch, and a Erie Lackawanna box car for $4, out of the used box. Since ya didn't make it for burgers, we're cookin beans Sat. at the campground.
DAVE, congrads on the exams getting done. Sounds like the next part is going to take even more work and research though. Also hope you do a better job for the AF, than our local weather guessers round here.
RT,,, the shelf looks good with the trains on it.
JIM CG,,, hope ya'll get things worked out with the church an landlord. It'd be a shame to have to start over after all the work so far.
GARRY, sorry to hear bout your cat passing. We had to put our old tom cat down a year or so ago, from old age too [vet figured he was 18 or 19]. Then 3 months later we lost our dog to cancer.
A funny pet story; when kids were little they brought home the ugliest black n white she kitten ya ever saw. I didn't want it, but Mother said ok. That cat took a real liking to me and slept with me n Mother all the time. When she had her first litter, she had them on our bed, while we were sleeping in it. Woke up that morning to Twinkle looking at me from between my legs with new 4 kittens nursing.
Best gets back to chores, still have some of the mess from the trees to clean up. I've had kids the last 3 days, so I'm behind. Hope ya'll has a good day n stay safe

And here....I'll help you with the dance!
Good Morning Zoe, just a cup of coffee to go for me.
Dave, good luck with quitting/cutting the Diet Cokes. As you said, there are other ways to get the caffeine. Of course, you could start working on the caffeine next (depending on how close to retiredment you are... ).
Got to go - one good great thing is: it's payday! [happydance] (Hmm, that smiley didnt' show up...).
See everyone later - hope you have some decent weather. We're supposed to have hot and humid, but with winds (high of 94 F predicted).
Blessings,

Our young Train Master has been chasing after a local skirt lately and things came to a head yesterday. I warned him that he was playing with fire in the dynamite shack, but he wouldn't listen. She pretty much told him to drop dead then sicced her boyfriend on him. This resulted in David getting a fat lip and the boyfriend getting a broken nose, so the kid gave as good as he got. Now maybe the next time I tell he's playing with fire, he might listen, but I'm not holding my breath on that one. I didn't listen to adults either when I was that age.

Good evening to all.....had to make another HD run this afternoon, a bag of mortar sure doesn't set too many stones. While we were near the new 146 Mall, we headed to Barnes & Noble where I picked up a couple of books on Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 and then we headed to Longhorn Steakhouse for supper. After returning home I had to replace a GCFI in son #2's kitchen.....this is a new home and this GCFI has acted up since day 1, so I replaced the dog..all set now......while I was there, I looked at his main PC that got taken out by the lightening strike....prognosis...dead PS. I removed the Power Supply and applied power, no DC outputs.....after removing the case to the PS, the inline fuse was good, so some other components got fried......looks like a new PS is needed.
CAPE JIM: Version 6 that is due out this year, is Adobe Photoshop "Elements" bundled with Premier Elements ( for video camera use ), not the full blown software for professionals that cost about $600. Version 5 of APE which I just purchased, was a big upgrade over version 4, so the price of $89 with a $30 Adobe rebate was too good to pass up, PLUS, it came bundled with Adobe Premier Elements!!!! An excellent buy !!!!
GARRY: Sorry to hear about the loss of your pet cat.....we lost our dog two years ago this month, and our cat one year ago this month and we miss them very much, but wife doesn't want to get another pet yet....losing them was tough for her, I guess she doesn't want to go through it again.......I would get another pet tomorrow, they are good for ones health..PROVEN!

Evening Gang: I finished the corral this afternoon. You may not believe this Jeff but there are several things that I consider worse. Building fences for one. Having the grapple on the bucket cut about 1/3 of the time off. I didn't have to mess around to get a full bucket everytime. Actually I could get a lot more then I ever got in the bucket before.
Well the live steam meet is just a week away. I talked to Terry the track owner today. He said there are 2 places where sun kinks have appeared. These we'll work on tomorrow. I'll try to get over there in the afternoon to give him a hand and fulfill my MRRing for the day.
Tomorrow I'll have to get to work on the creek crossing. If the guy comes to cut the hay I have to have it cleaned out so he can get across. I should get to bed so I can get up early. Yea, like that is really going to happen.
Good Night All

Hey, hey, now, Der - I'll have you know that once in a while is okay for the pancakes. It's if you have a steady diet of it (or if you are diabetic and not using the sugarfree syrup) that you get yourselves into trouble. All things in moderation on the food...
Sounds like your tree-planting is coming along, well, too! Good luck with the corner-coving... (Almost let slip a w-word, and I don't want anyone getting onto me...)
Jordan, if that's the PhotoShop Elements program, that sounds more in line with a usual price. I got my version (3.0) several months back, for free with my scanner (Canon LIDE 50, a nice one).
Garry, sorry to hear about Skeekie. Good to hear about Boss and Max (though sad that you don't have either of those special pets anymore). Dogs can sure be loyal (to other dogs as well as to their owners).
Colby, how is Fossil doing? Hearing the pet stories was reminding me of one of the guys from the 'old' Coffee Shop (Bridge Tom, for those who remember or are in touch with him). Well, I'm going to run an errand so I'll see everyone later. Hope you all can get some MRR'ing (or at least reading a recent issue of MR) in tonight. BTW, some of the rest of you may have received an email that the Trains site is running a special sale on Information Station PDF's you can download (through the 9th, I think it was).
Thanks for the thoughts Ryan and Der regarding our oldest cat (Skeekie). It was good, also, to read Colby's story about Fossil and Sueky. Now we're down to only one pet, a 12 year old cat who is still called "Little Kitten". She's the crazy one.
Another pet story is when we were living in the country in Michigan and had several pets. Among them were Max (large black Lab) and Boss (Dalmation). Boss got that name because that's what he thought he was. Sometimes, the dogs were confined to the basement laundry room after coming in from a rainy, muddy day. That room included the laundry tub with a short hose to reach a bucket for the dog's water. Ocassionally, forgetful humans neglected their water. No problem to Max. He was large enough to reach the faucet at the back of the sink, and he would turn on the water himself. When the dogs had enough water, Max would then reach the faucet a second time, and he turned off the water. No kidding. This really did happen. Unfortunately, one night the dogs failed to return home. We called and called for them. We thought we heard a bark in the distance. We drove around to try and find them. We found Boss standing next to Max who was laying on the road. Max had been struck by a car or truck and could not move his hind end. Boss was faithful to his buddy, Max. Boss was keeping guard. No other cars hit Max. We took Max to the vet. X-Rays disclosed that Max's spine had been broken into two pieces. We had him put down. A few years later, boss became old and died, too. Boss, we could tell, always missed Max.
Bye.

Dick, are you sure that's $149?? That sounds way cheap for PhotoShop (or do they just have the price jacked up for CS Studio?). If it's only that low of a price, I can afford to upgrade from Elements (though Elements does most everything I need to do).

Speaking of pets.
Fossil as some of you remember is a big baby. literaly, today my neighbor's dog (sueky: Sue-ky) got lose and came bouning over to me, because I was one of the people she saw on her first day at home. Fossil was out side and I lead Sueky to fossil. Fossil Ran around trying to get away from Sueky, who is still a little puppy. how big of a baby is that?

RE: D-Day Thanks, Jeff. It did not make headlines in the news media. I wonder why.…Happy to report that CTV Newsnet did note it at some length this morning at 10:00. I haven’t caught a top-of-the-hour since to see if they have continued. I think it was also in the Halifax Herald. We take so much for granted, and remember the cost infrequently. We probably say “Thanks” less often than we should.

Garry: She was about 18. It was long enough to be used to having her around. Recently, she would sit with me if I was up early and having my morning oatmeal.…Kris and I understand that well, and share your pain. “Pampas George” was 22 when he died a few years back. Aloof as cats often are, in his later years he took to condescending to sitting on my lap. The picture of him doing that which is on Kris’ screen-saver slide show still gives me a twinge.

A few more trees planted over the last day or so. Many more sorted out from their storage boxes, and a whole bunch have to be re-habilitated. Since the decision has been made to paint directly on the wall for the back drop “retro-fit” I’m going to have to stop planting and do the corner coving, and at least paint where the trees will be against the back drop. That will give me something different to attempt, not altogether a bad thing.
Colby: Cleaning that track before laying it sounds like a good idea. If you do use Goo Gone, the May MR article on Track Maintenance suggested wiping the track off afterwards to get rid of the GG. I picked up from that same article a possible reason why my use of rubbing alcohol as a cleaner isn’t working as well as I would expect. Turns out it’s almost too good, and leaves the rail dry, and with no protective coating between the track and the wheels. The result is severe arcing. The carbon from this leads to stalling of locos within a few minutes (as I have experienced). Solution is a light oil sparingly applied after the cleaning. The whole article is worth reading.
Another meeting tonight (on top of an hour long conference call this afternoon.) May not get back in today.

Hello Diners.......
Well it's kinda sad around here. We just returned from the vet. No possible cure for our oldest cat, and we had her put down. She was about 18. It was long enough to be used to having her around. Recently, she would sit with me if I was up early and having my morning oatmeal.
Time for a sanity break in the train room.

Herbs are continuing to grow, but the cilantro, curry, and one of the basil plants is already bolting. The tomato plants are getting bigger too, looking forward to a fresh tomato crop to keep us in the RED until the first frost in the late Fall.
Ahhhh LUNCHTIME!!! And JEFF's buying, even better !!!!!!! Thanks Jeff!!!!
DAVEV: Congratulations on your PHD Dave!! Meteorology!!! Allright!!!! I have always had an interest in weather, even as a 10 year old, I would cut out the maps from the daily newspaper and try to predict the direction of the Highs and Lows towards New England. What is the subject of your Thesis???
FERGIE: Have you ordered a 2-10-4 yet? They are taking orders for them now for end of year delivery. Much more powerful locomotive than the 2-10-2's which were "sluggish" according to books that I have read. The 2-10-4 was a design steo-up from the Berkshire 2-8-4 which ushered in the era of Super Power Locomotives.
Later, got get back outside to finish "landscape/ wall construction/repair work...( does this help with MRR landscaping I wonder? )

Moderate drought conditions continue across the Raleigh-Durham area. For reasons unknown even to me as a meteorologist, my town of Apex seems particularly prone to it.
Last night a fairly impressive squall line passed to our north. The RDU airport (north of us) got a little (0.25"), but my home weather station measured just (0.03"). Consequently our water bill has doubled over the past two months. The vegetable garden and the lawn both need help!
