We (my dad and I) just got back from breakfast and we were crossing the CSX line that runs through town when we saw two of those MoW trucks with the train wheels on them (i don't know what they're called).  My dad made a comment about how he'd "hate to have that job".  Then I realized what he was talking about... Since they're not heavy enough to trip the crossing gates, I don't know if they trip the signals, either.  Imagine, going down the tracks in one of those things...and then three SD70Ms pulling 150 coal hoppers come up behind you at 50 miles per hour!  Not exactly the perfect recipe for a good day. Good Morning Coffee Clubbers,

Another beautiful day down here in Paradise.  Cool [8D]  Should get up to around 98ºF today.  The technician is coming out to do the yearly maintenance on the a-c unit that cools the upstairs part of the house.  That means the a-c will be down for part of the day!!  Horrors.  I'll just have to put the fans on high and try to hold out.

CG_Jim - I see Fergie's been through already - sheesh, in your time zone that would've be what? - 3 or 4 a.m. that you posted?

Nope, remember he's ahead of us by around 2-1/2 hours (Atlantic Time).  It was probably around seven o'clock when he posted.

Heartland Division - so exactly where is "paradise"? We like Mexico, but never considered staying there.

Tuxpan, Veracruz.  On the Mexican Gulf Coast, maybe about 10 hour's drive south of the border at Brownsville.  Not a very touristy spot, typical gulf coast beach, not that white sand and crystal clear water like Cancun, and not one of those places that makes it into magazines as one of the "100 Best Places to Retire in Mexico" either.  We retired here because Fran's family is from here.  In fact, we built next door to my in-laws.  It's actually a bit hot and humid for my tastes, but that's why they invented a/c.

Hasta luego guys,

Ed

Yeah, she's riding with friends.

Fergie, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade!  Pics of trains in the fog are cool!  Now grab that camera and hit the tracks!

For Mr. Vollmer........

Well, last month we were almost 3" shy of our normal rainfall, and this month we're on track to do it again.  We're an inch short already and no rain forcasted for the next 5-7 days.

Dry Weather Continues!

TODAY:  Not much to say here...dry, warm weather continues highs today will hit the mid to upper 80's.

EXTENDED OUTLOOK:  Since the pattern is stagnant, lets skip right to the extended outlook.  Not good news for farmers or for the water companies here.  Here is the upper level map by Thursday morning.

(Click any of these pics to enlarge)

A ridge of high pressure will surround the state, and help keep the dry weather locked in.  We should officially get below normal in the rainfall for the year by Thursday or Friday.

DROUGHT WATCH:  Rain has been an endangered species since the month of May.  Here is a rundown of some of the stats.

Usually drought refers to a period of time longer than a month, but May was so much below normal, that it does classify as a short-term drought on the Palmer Index.  Here is the latest Drought Assessment.

Look at the progression of the drought from the southeast U.S. to here in Indiana!

When could we see relief???  Well, the latest projections point to the early or middle of next week.  Here is the GFS Model map by Tuesday night.

And for all the laymen out there.......

Jeff, we'll be praying for "Mom"!

Hello and good morning, diners!  ..... and good mooring, Fergie!

If you snooze you loose. I missed out on some muffins from Der a couple of days ago.

Forecast is sunny and high 80's today. Another day to do the outside stuff in the morning before the heat bothers me.  Jeff's keeping cool I hear (when not working his desk job). Dick's looking out for you. Take care of yourself!

Been busy here.  I noticed not one of you showed up to help lift the steam locomotive back up to the "upstairs layout".   I can tell who my friends are.  I still owe a couple of you (Jerry and Dick) some pix you requested.  I've not forgotten.  I'll get a round tuit.

Paul, I'm interested in what you're doing.  I'm sure I missed out on some earlier posts. Sounds like you're involved with big model trains.  As for your watching a John Wayne, I'll say Hollywood has not made a good movie since John Wayne died. You have to get an old movie if you want to see a man being a man.

BobK ...... nice photos of the club layout!  Good to see B&O operating in Mass. NH can park their trains!

Ed........ so exactly where is "paradise"? We like Mexico, but never considered staying there.

Der........... so it's back to rocks, eh........ and the backdrop, too.  I was just patching up some of mine.  The first sections of my backdrop (Faller) are wrinkled.  Reason for that condition is that I followed their instructions precisely to the letter.  They said to use wallpaper paste. I learned water based paste on paper makes it swell and stretch. Subsequently, I use generous amounts of 3M spray adhesive to install, and I'm happy with that method.

Fergie.....  Good you're feelin' better.  Food poison is no fun.  You should only eat at the diner.  Lessons learned.  Can we look forward to steam shovel photos.

Lee ........nice photos of the WM GP40.  Atlas? Looks like it.  They make great locos.

Sue ..........teaching a class on leading rock climbing? wow! it's uphill now, right? Keep smiling.

Hey Ryan....... that's really good food you're eating.  glad you're under control.  (splitting meals). Keeping the pounds off okay?

Interesting skeeter brew Inch. Skeeters aren't too bad here. Ticks can be though. I suppose that might work on them. I don't see many of those bug zapping lights anymore.

Dick.............. thanks for the gardening updates. Strawberry rhubarb pies yet?

Hello Indiana Bill. ... Thanks for your contributions. Feel free to talk a bit.

Philip ..........  I hope your daughter's vacation is in somebody else's car.  OR else you may be rescuing instead of soldering.

Cape Jim.................. sympathies if you must be dealing with lawyers, etc. Hard to get stuff done with legal matters out there. Good luck with the GP7.  I bet you really like it!

Everybody........ Have a nice day!

Good morning, Zoe - a cup of coffee and one of Bill T.'s chocolate donuts please, to go.

I see Fergie's been through already - sheesh, in your time zone that would've be what? - 3 or 4 a.m. that you posted? Goodness, Fergie, don't forget to get some Zzz [zzz]'s!

Yesterday was not one of my favorite days - I'll just say that I have to go to court on the 21st on a civil matter (no, not a woman involved), and the company filing is a PITA that I tried to work things out with earlier, but they weren't interested. Just bummed out. Didn't even feel like going to MRR club last night. Censored [censored]Accountants and lawyers! SoapBox [soapbox] Okay, I'll step off of the box now.

Hope today goes better.  One good thing yesterday was, my P2K ATSF GP7 arrived.

Hope your week is going better,

Good Morning All

Well the fog lifted for a whole 20 minutes this morning but I hear the fog horn is back bemoaning her endless cry of dispair and "Look Out I'm over here".  Every two minutes she laments... every two minutes...

After a while you don't hear it anymore, a kind of selective hearing I dare say that I've developed over the years.

Ed: glad to see you enjoying paradise, musty be nice to have NO FOG! Yes I'm envious. Temps out here yesterday was in the 40's might get into the 50's today.

Richard: Not quite sure what this lot is up to yet all I know is they are doing Ocean mapping and looking at sea bottom formations. Lots of coal I'm told. Any signs of tropical waves yet?

Well the work continues on the erie Steam Shovel but it's a perverse little kit with many parts and the wrong glue (My fault I'm afraid). Should have had the slower CA or the "Orange Peel" non toxic stuff. But once I apply paint it will look great.

That's it for me

Later All

Me too Paul......fifnished the cement work on the wall and sidewalk in front of house, dodging raindrops off n On all afternoon, but nothing long enough or hard enough to bother the mortar or cement. Swinging those 89# bags around has me tired tonight....I fell asleep reading MRR, now that's BAD !!!

So before I miss any more keys typing...we will see you guys for breakfast...

Evening Gang: Just a short one tonight. I got the trucks under the gondolas and moved them to a shady spot. I started to paint the cars and had to make a couple of new pieces to replace ones that had rotted out. Right now I've got a dvd running. It's John Wayne in Sea Chase. So I'll get to watching it and see you all later.

I'm beside myself.

I have the inspiration, but no time!

The recent thread to give me the inspiration to get back in the modeling grove has done it's magic.  My mind is racing with thoughts of modeling.  Problem is, the daughters car keeps breaking down and it's eating up all of my time!  I fix it, then drive it, and it purrs like a kitten.  She gets behind the wheel and can't make it out of the neighborhood before it's broken again!  AAAAHHHHHHGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!

I've got vacation coming up and she'll be out of town, so I'm warming up my soldering gun now!

Thanks, John.  I may just go with this one.

Although this one could work too.

Well, maybe not.  Too small, and I don't smoke.  The search for an appropriate siesta smilie goes on.

Good evening folks: I’ve heard from OZJim today. He asked me to pass this along to y’all:
Good morning/afternoon John. It's James (Ozjim) here.
I figured i'd better get in touch with a trains.com member to let them know I'm still around!
I've tried for the last few weeks posting a reply in the diner thread, But for some reason in any web browser, it won't let me.
I've also been very busy with work 5.30/6am - 5/5.30pm daily, so when I get home I feel too tired to try sort out the problem or surf the net in general.
If you could pass on to the members in the diner that i'm still around down under, I'd greatly appreciate it, as I can still read it, Just not reply!
P.S... If anyone would like to get into contact with me, please pass on this email address to them. (it's also my msn messenger address)
Take care,
Regards,
James Saunders.
Here’s the e-address he uses gussonator_14@hotmail.com
Colby
Der- Maybe, well I gess if it is fried I could salvage the plug, or keep using it untill it
1. blows up 2. overheats 3. starts to smoke4. trains won't go even at full throttle
and finally does all of the above, I gess the same happend to the first power pack Jeff gave me. Now all trains run at full speed without even turning the throttle from 0% to 100%.
…don’t throw it out. I’m assuming it has AC terminals? Those are great for running accessories like powered turnouts or street and building lights. Just tape off the useless DC terminals, and tuck the pack away until you need that accessory power. Using a separate pack for that purpose means that your train running pack won’t vary in power to the locos if you throw a turnout or light up a city block or two! Kinda spoils the effect when a train suddenly slows just because a switch was thrown!
Ed:
[insert "siesta" smilie here]
…Ever happy to oblige, old chap, take your pick…

That’s about it for me for tonight. I’ve put away the tree planting gear and will go back to rock castings and covering the blue foam for a while. This will let me figure out just how I’m going to tackle the backdrop corner coving retro-fit. Once I’ve got a plan, that will be the next project.

Goodnight everyone, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel [angel]

Good Afternoon Coffee Clubbers,

Another beautiful sunny day down here in Paradise.  Cool [8D]  A trifle hot at 36ºC (+/- 97ºF), but we do have a/c.  New hard drive is still running, so that's a good sign.  And all my normal sites seem to be accessible, even better.  Minor annoyance is that the tech swapped my keyboard over to Spanish style when he reloaded all the programs, so all the special character keys are in different locations.  I haven't figured out how to swap it back to standard English style yet.

SilverSpike - Nice to see that Ed has his computer problems fixed. That means more virtual OJ heading up the T1 pipe soon.

Yup, the Coffee Shop will have to make do with virtual juice until the new season starts in October (+/-).  Can I interest you guys in some bananas, mangos or papayas?  We do have some of those right now.

TFM loco huh!

That's the old TFM paint scheme, which was modeled on the KCS scheme.  Some of those grey locos have had their logo repainted as KCS de Mexico, (with the "de Mexico" in smaller black letters).  What will be neat to see is when some of the new KCS or KCSdeM locos in the retro Southern Belle paint scheme start showing up.

Not much progress on the layout.  Okay, let's be honest, no progress on the layout.  Wink [;)]  " Terminal laziness" has set in.  I feel unworthy listening to how busy other retarded guys here (like GreyFox, Paul B, derJohn, just to name a few) keep themselves.  I try, but I think it's just the "mañana factor" down here.  [insert "siesta" smilie here]

I have been working on making changes to one of those old MDC 2-8-0's.  Started out as just changing out the old Rapido couplers. Now it's new pilot, changed old style top mounted headlight for more modern center mounted headlight, minor cab mods, modified stack, etc.  I'll tell you, Normal scale is really too small for an old goat mike me to be fooling around with.  Hope it runs after all the work I've put into it.  A normal person would have had it back together and operating by now.  I still have work to do.

Not sure if I'll finish it before the next trip.  We leave in a week for our big summer trip.  Five and a half weeks, incl a week and a half in Houston to see the grandson, and almost 4 weeks in Newfoundland.  And as soon as we get back we have to pack for another week+ heading to what passes for the annual national railfan and model railroad convention down here.  Nothing compared to conventions and shows up north of the Rio Bravo, but it's the only show in town down here.

Hasta mañana

Ed

'Evening Guys and Gals,

Just a quick stop, maybe a cold drink will work for now. It's been so busy around here I haven't had the time to even stop by.

I have a lot of catch up to do, maybe later this evening.

A magazine, South Coastal Living, has contacted me about an article they want to do about my club, The South Shore Model Railway Club. I'm about ready to leave to meet them at the club. I'm the scenery Chairperson and they need information about how it is designed, the materials used and methods to accomplish a realistic look. Wow a scenery clinic in print.  Paul3 the Operation Chair, also on this forum will go over how the RR is basically designed around prototypical Ops as a first priority, then it is up to layout design, benchwork, trackwork and electrical. Then it is up to me and my merry crew to try to make it all look like the real world. This is Bob, a retired electrical engineer. This is actually his first attempt at flying solo on the section

These are some of my spots

A work in progress, note the Cripplebush rubber rocks

ME viaduct

This is some great work by John, took 3 years to complete, it's a hit at our shows

Well gota run,

Don't want to be late for the interview, Let you know how I make out,

Good afternoon everyone, 79F and partly cloudy here today with a nice breeze from the NE. The garden is doinf great, unlike last year, all the seeded veggies are up and survived the downpours from TS's last week. I have a new idea for watering and fertilizing that I am trying out this year. My son had obtained 4 black, heavy duty plastic barrels, 30 gallon, that I am going to cut off the tops, fill with water, and add some lime and dehydrated cow manure along with super phosphate. I will place the 4 barrels at key loactions around the garden, let the full day sun heat the water, and dip the watering cans in to water the plants when needed with this mix. The well water (artesian) is real cold, like 47F, and this "shocks" the plants too much I feel. I have some soaker hoses that I use also, but I have to be so careful when rototilling not to run over the hoses, a real pain in the a.., so I am trying this new method.

JEFF: Xp should not be selling for over $200...no way!! Please check on the internet, it is selling for far less than that. Even Vista Home basic is only $120 +/- .

FERGIE: That sounds like an interesting project.......what are they trying to find by mapping the geography of the ocean bottom? As for food poisoning, Zoe told me she saw you licking the mayonaise jar cover two days ago....you know, the one that was left out in the open all day? tsk, tsk.

RYAN: Yes, it did rain here Saturday, in fact it rained at the rate of 2.45" per hour for short duration downpours. My daughter was camping on Cape Cod....never received a drop of rain...go figure...she was closer to the upper level LOW stuck off the coast of Nova Scotia where Fergie is on his science expedition.

COLBY: Did you get your Multimeter yet? Get an advance on your summer job or on your allowance at home.

MIKE: Turn ON the floodlights at the camp!!! On second thought, it might confuse the engineer in thinking that another train is coming at him.....lol

SUE: I have been reading the manual in-between doing yard and garden work, or maintenance on the equipment here. So far, I really like version 5...I think you would really like the features. Several mags that I get, including Consumer Reports, has rated this as #1 for the everyday user in the latest issue.

If so, I downloaded them from photobucket.  Sometimes the standard smiles just didn't express what I was thinking.

I thought I recognized those.  I wasn't sure how they got in the post because I didn't notice them before, but Jeff informed me that I was asleep at the wheel.

Yeah, hit me up!  I see how you are! Wink [;)]

Phillip, Hey, I've been meaning to tell you that I got Ben jump started on building that 1958 Edsel kit. I started him off by showing how to build the engine and he took the ball and ran with it. When he finishes it I will post a photo!

Cool, I'll look for it!  I thought that would make a good looking model when I saw it.

Good day folks!

Thanks for all the warm birthday wishes for Monique! She had a great weekend of fun and merriment! Cool [8D]

We went to Las Margaritas the local Mexican restaurant for dinner Friday night and split the Chicken Fajitas. Saturday it was just the two of us for a romantic evening of dining and dancing. We went to La Foresta and split the Stuffed Mushroom Caps, then the Antipasto Salad Plate, and then we each had a Chocolate Canoli.

Then we went to Oxford, NC to the Oxford Bar and Grill with some new dancing friends we met in our dance class, and danced until midnight to some of the local beach music.

Then Sunday afternoon we went to the pool and enjoyed the sun for 3 hours, then came home and I cooked her some good ole New Orleans BBQ Shrimp with crusty French bread.

So, speaking of food, what's for lunch in the Diner today?

Dinner [dinner] Ahhh.... PC.....lunch time soon....!!! Dinner [dinner]

Garry, nice to see the Burlington Baggage car made a showing on the rails. And that upstairs layout looks like a headache to keep the steam loco on track. Maybe an elevated curve would help! LOL

Jeff, good advice for any and all school age kids, and I am passing it onto my sons too!

Haven't heard from Ryan much today - must be really pampering Monique for her birthday, doing the dishes, laundry and who knows what else? Maybe he has a LHS trip planned for the next week or so (after her birthday)? Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Jim, you must be a mind reader or something! I did all that too and more! Too funny about the "belly roll" and mega-buffets! And with Father's Day just around the corner....LHS.....yes! Actually, the belly roll dance move is so named because both partners turn toward one another and it can be a close dance move (bellies touching) and then the two partners turn out again while facing each other.

Paul, I don't miss the heat and humidity of the Deep South! At least when it is hot here the humidity is fairly reasonable.  You know the joke in South Louisiana is that the state bird should have been the mosquito!

Dick, did it actually rain any for you this past weekend? We were projected/forecasted/guessed to have rain Saturday and Sunday, and we ain't seen any drop of moisture at all. And since Vista is out now not surprised that XP $$ are going way down, I might have to snag a copy of XP Pro just have another backup CD available.

Nice to see that Ed has his computer problems fixed. That means more virtual OJ heading up the T1 pipe soon.

Phillip, TFM loco huh! Hey, I've been meaning to tell you that I got Ben jump started on building that 1958 Edsel kit. I started him off by showing how to build the engine and he took the ball and ran with it. When he finishes it I will post a photo!

Thoughts and prayers to all!

Cheers,

Ryan

Good morning gang.  I will just have coffee.

I haven't been in for a while because I was teaching a class on leading rock climbing in Leavenworth.  It rained on Saturday so we did ground work, but Sunday was gorgeous. It was quite late when I got home last night.

I am having a little difficulty catching up on things here.

BTW, I have no idea where the smilies ad in this post came from.  It's not in the post when you veiw it in the preview mode.  It looks like the forum software just decided to add it in.  It also decided that I had "non-matching quotes" when I went to post, but I checked and it was set up PERFECTLY.  This happens to me from time to time.  Do you guys get this too?

That will happen if there's an "&" in the '[ quote user = "name"]' whether they're lined up perfectly or not.

Well how about that!  Learn something new every day!

So where'd the ad come from?

First of all thanks, Jeffrey, for clearing up about the non matching quotes.  I had just figured that the post was locked or that I was not bright enough to figure it out.  While you are clearing things up, how do you quote from two different posts when replying?

Dick, Thanks for the note about Lisa.  I have been gone for 3 days and will try to catch up today.  Are you having trouble with your new Photoshop?

That reminds me, I have a bunch of photos to extract from the camera.  I went with Larry to unload at the Port of Tacoma on Thursday and took photos of some yards and of a swamp that I may need for reference.

The sun is shining here so I should get my camping gear out ot dry before it rains again.

Mornin, coffee please Zoe,

Had some good weekend weather here, so we spent Sat. night at the ground. 2 of the grandsons from Springfield were down, so we set up our tent too, then ended up with 2 more. Fixed a big pot of beans for supper and some friends of Bryans came over for supper. Got a couple train pics also, this one I got as it was starting to get light, no it's not a very good one, but it's the best this camera do with the light.

Great pics ya got from over there PC.

Liked your video to Colby, I've never seen any of those round here.

PAUL,,, for skeeters, we spray a mix of lemon dish soap and lemon ammonia [50/50] around the yard with a sprayer I got on the garden hose, works pretty well here.

Got Clyde's 3 kids plus an extra for a couple hours today, so no big plans. Do need to water the garden this morning, starting to get dry here. Had rain forecast for last Fri., but didn't get enough to wash the side walk off, and none forecast till the weekend. Best get at chores, hope ya'll has a good day

Good Morning All

Well its been three days of FOG and today it's FROG (fog and rain) as we steam with a towed array behind mapping the ocean bottom and it's geological features. I guess they've been picking up some Glacial scarring with side scan left some 14,000 years ago.

As for myself I have not been feeling my best as the nurse figures I may have food poisining (Oh Joy!) I am on the mend but it's been an unpleasant several days to say the least.

Anyway I must be off as I have work to do and must get at it before i forget all about it (Oh that would be nice)!

Later All

Fergie
