Josh, I'm not sure exactly when the white roofs appeared, but their purpose is to keep the cab interior cooler by reflecting the sunlight instead of absorbing it...cheaper than retrofitting every loco with a roof-mounted A/C unit!

First off, I'd like to say, FINALLY, CSX fans. It's good to be here. Anyway, the white roof was introduced in 2002, and Ken hit the nail on the head as to why. It's a bummer for me though, I model late 1999/2000. I guess my engineers will have to die of heat exhaustion[8D]

[V] It was in 2004, not 2002, that CSX introduced the white roofs. I think I got it mixed up with UP's introduction of the flags in '02. Ahh who knows.

Here is the link if you want to explore that whole site: http://www.trainweb.org/csxphotos/

QUOTE: Originally posted by simon1966 I was in Huntington WV yesterday on business and the place is crawling with CSX motive power. On the East end of the town is a massive building with the CSX logo, seemsed like dozens of locos outside. Is this one of CSX's main locomotive maintenance locations?
