I toured one in northwest PA with the RR Industries SIG back in 1998 - awsome! If I had the extra space I'd put one on my pike. (The steel mill uses up about 70% of my available real estate.)

Have you ever visited that short line that was using the 4 old Chessie GP-9's?

No, i haven't. I really restric my railfanning to local places, since i can't drive yet. (I'm only 13) I do plan to get a paper mill, but i will scale it down quite a bit to make it fit on my line.

My layout is a freelance line. Somewhere in new england. Its called the Southcross & Western division. I have painted a lot of rolling stock for the freelance line (pictures in the link in my signature). But there is a lot of CSX action on my railroad as well. And dont forget the occasional amtrak.[:D] My main cargo is coal and the mine takes about 1/4 of the layout. There is also a pretty large coal dealership complex. I also run a lot of mixed frieghts between the two cities on my layout (my layout has lots of switching).

Are you talking about the Great Walton/Hartwell/Athens “empire.” I live near the Athens line and see the two ex Chessie’s often. One of them still in original paint. Between the four locations they operate many more than four GP9s. If you include all of the Geeps and the SD7 they represent Chessie, C&O, CNW, RF&P, South Carolina Railroad, B&LE with many still in original paint! I finally managed to photograph them all I think.

BTW, in addition to the coastal Tropicana Fruit Express they also run some north through Atlanta to Ohio(?). The go north in blocks, but it is not a dedicated train like the one on the coast.

I have always wanted to tour a steal mill. Especially with so many going under. I got to go in Atlantic Steel in Atlanta before it was torn down, but it was probably nothing compared to those up north or even some in Alabama.

I was in Huntington WV yesterday on business and the place is crawling with CSX motive power. On the East end of the town is a massive building with the CSX logo, seemsed like dozens of locos outside. Is this one of CSX's main locomotive maintenance locations?

I watch CSX all the time. Syracuse NY area - I live about 5 minutes from their DeWitt NY Yard.... They also serve a beer distributor in my area who's spur runs along the side of my street. So, I see them (CSX) about 2-3x's weekly! I'm also going to model the distributor and spur on my pike when I get that far.

I don't know Troy, but near me there is an Intermodal yard just south of Atlanta. Never been there, but it sounds like a great spot for railfannng.

I see at least two trains daily in my area. My workplace is less than half a mile from the CSX main line. Peachtree City isn't really an urban area, but there are at least five grade crossings within three miles of Falcon Field, a small airport serving Fayette County, GA.

No, I'm a Norfolk Southern fan myself. But we share Conrail's assists (we both wanted it all). So we work together. The old NYC line running through my town of Dearborn is a shared assist line.
I do have a CSX GP-38 in the RED BLOCK paint scheme, A 4-8-4 C&O Hudson, a BL2 that will be done in C&O colors and a Pere Marquette train set with two EMD E-6's and an unknown quanity of freight cars.
By the way, do you know what "RED BLOCK" was?

Absolutely! Huntington was the former C&O's 'flagship' loco facility - just as Cumberland (MD) was for the B&O. I'm glad to see it's still active.
