Got another CSX fan here. I'm modelling csx in an as yet determined location. I'm prepping the room for the layout, including a good thourough clean and new paint on the walls. I'm going to model early days of csx so I can run many of my chessie units, I can't pass on up when i see it. I'll try and posts some pictures when I have something to tak pictures of. You can see some of my last layout and some pics i've taken if you follow the link at the bottom.

4884Bigboy- When were those pictures taken. I was surprised to see a chessie unit in original paint.

George- those pictures were taken a week ago yesterday. The Chessie GP40 is a drone, and I think is one of fewer than 10 CSX loco's still in Chessie paint.

I hear ya, been struggling with the free-time issue myself...

I'll try to remember to keep my camera available in my car. I drive over a CSX grade crossing on my way to- and from work each day; one of the tracks is a passing siding, and oftentimes there will be a train just sitting there, almost begging to be photographed! Now that I know there are others here who appreciate this modern stuff I'll try to get [and post] more pics.

I'm still finding many of the blue "ex-Cons" in the lashups, along with BNSF and an occasional leased unit.

I live near quite a few grade crossings but thanks to kudzu and pine trees, i can only photograph them if i am standing on the tracks (never have never will)

Wow I never noticed this post!!! I have a freelanced CSX layout durring the merger years. It is good to see other CSX modelers, I didnt think there were too many of us. I cant wait to see a big CSX layout in MR!

The CSX is a cool railroad that has many great folks working there. Over the years, some of them have been VERY nice to my son and I while railfanning! We live close to the mainline between Birmingham and Nashville. There's some neat spots to watch around here. There's two tunnels and a few trestles not far from here. Boyles yard is close to where I work and we've watched many times there as well. If I were modeling a modern day railroad it would very likely be CSX.

I am a great fan of CSX because of the diversity of trains and the large amount of operating they do. I live near Buffalo so I have seen their large Frontier Yard. I also have been to Fostoria so CSX trains a-plenty there.

My favourite CSX trains are the intermodals, general merchandise and the tra***rains oddly enough (something fasinating about 40+ 89 foot USWX flatcars carrying 4 large highcube containers of trash each).

One of the many things I enjoy about modelling csx is they tend to have a lot of diffent history. Now I know that all of the carriers have their own history but it seems that CSX has a greater amount of different history. CSX is really a number of Fallen flags roled into one and a lot of the older equipmnt is around I.e. Chessie and Seaboard locomotives, plus the many variations of the csx scheme. That you can be surprised by each train you see.

Plus a lot of their lines are old lines that still hold their charm. Sandpatch is one line that comes to mind. It may have new equipment and a slightly different look but not much has changed operation wise. the same problems that were around before still haunt the csx today. The line that runs through Akron Ohio, my town, hasn't changed very much in the past couple decades. Many other carriers are long gone but the old b&o mainline is still running the same route it did, now as the CSX. Times have changed but the line hasn't. And each subdivison has it's own character. Partly due the terrain but it makes things interesting.
Maybe I'm tired and had to many cups of coffee tonight. Nonetheless these are some of the things that caught my interest in CSX. hopefully we'll get to see a good size layout in MRR soon. i was happy with the flatlands layout which had some CSX on it. Maybe on day one of our layouts will grace the cover of MRR with a CSX engine leading.

Wildwood, Fla. is off I-75 and S.R.44 goes thru it . Decent size CSX yard on south side of town. On west side the bridge over the tracks gives you a great view of the yard.
The Tropicana special goes north thru the city of Ocala. Been a few years since I saw it.
Enjoyed seeing all the pictures and seeing the Coffee Clubers on this Spot.

Saw an interesting - and somewhat unsettling - situation at the CSX grade crossing on my way to work this morning.

As I was approaching around the bend, I noticed the crossing gates were down and flashing. Cars were 'sneaking' across from the other side, weaving in between the closed gates. I groaned, thinking that the gates were malfunctioning again (happens all too frequently), but as I glanced to my left I saw a SD70MAC less than 3 feet from the road. It was on the passing siding, waiting for a higher-priority train to pass. Apparently the loco was too close to the grade for the engineer to manually raise the gates back up.

While I waited for the opposing traffic to clear, I suddenly heard a loud blast from a 5chime - also from the left! And there it was, a 3-unit consist on the main line heading westbound (SD40-2 in YN2 scheme, SD40-2 leased unit in some faded red paint, and a GP40-2 in the stealth scheme).

Those horns really DO serve a purpose...![:O]

I finally got tired of watching history slip thru my fingers and decided to do something about it. Now I keep my camera in my car when I'm driving to- and from work, and this afternoon I actually 'caught' one at the Woodstock, MD crossing - a Westbound merchandiser led by C40-8 #7514:



...hopefully this is the first of a long series![:p]

This CSX forum is great! For CSX modelers do you have a mix of paint schemes or just YN2/YN3 schemes? I have alot of Chessie, and Seaboard power still on my roster. My favorite scheme is the steath with yellow nose! I just sold my gp30 I painted on ebay, I would like to do a C40-8 in that same paint!

What about the loader - is that a Norscot diecast metal model? I'll have to dig up a photo of my back-dated Kibri to show you.

All my other CSX locos are factory-painted, and they are sitting in their boxes until I can get my new layout built... [sigh]

Question, What year did CSX recieve 8-40CW's?

According to my diesels spotters guider the firsts 8-40cw's were delivered 1989. That is to any railroad. CSX was the only railroad to get the 8-44cw which appeared identical to the 8-40cw's except a larger radiator. these were delivered in 1993-94

Thanks Andrew, that means I will be picking up a CW from Bachmann's new DCC line! I dont have any Wide cab engines , I thought they were too new! I try to model 1990 and older,even though my vehicles are Late 90's and 2000's [:I]

csxmu-No problem. I got the diesel spotters guide to hlp me identify trains while i railfan but it has helped me model alot. A geat way to figure out what csx had at the time.

Well todays a big day for my railroad. After waiting to earn enough money and waiting for the use of the family van, I can finally go out and buy foam for my layout, my benchwork was finished a month ago. I've been eagerly waiting for the ability to layout my track pan in real time and get to work on the actual layout. more news on how eveerything pans out.

csxmu, if you're thinking of getting a 8-40CW, might I suggest you get an Atlas? The detail is truly superior to the bachmann, and u can't beat the Atlas drive train![:)]

Wide Cabs too new? EMD introduced the SD60M in 1988 or 89, and the 8-40CWs and 8-40BWs debuted the same year. I'll definantly be getting an Atlas CSX 8-40CW in the near future. Love those wide cabs![:p]

Yes I love Atlas, I didnt know about the wide cabs CSX didnt get SD60M's until the conrail merger. If I bought an Atlas though it would be equiped with sound! I too will have a wide cab or two in the near future!
