Track fiddlerHow does that old saying go?
I always heard it —
Red in the morning sailors take warning. Red at night, sailors delight.
All I ever commanded was a row boat so I really don't qualify.
Wikipedia says:
If the morning skies are of an orange-red glow, it signifies a high-pressure air mass with stable air-trapping particles, like dust, which scatters the sun's blue light. This high pressure is moving towards the east, and a low-pressure system moves in from the west. Conversely, in order to see "red sky" in the evening, high-pressure air mass from the west scatters the blue light in the atmospheric particles, leaving the orange-red glow. High-pressure air mass signifies stable weather, while low pressure signifies unstable weather.

Here it is similar.

It is Christmas.
Good morning.
I couldn't get my morning walk today. I tried, but I just about got blown over. I kind of looked like those hurricane weather men who stand out in the storm to show us how dumb they are.
With the talk of colored skies .... I know we're not to talk religion, but the saying is at least several thousand years old. It was quoted by Jesus in Matthew 16.

Good morning again
Well, back from the grocery, mission accomplished. Judy didn't want to get the live lobsters, she said killing something before we eat would be unappetizing. I have kind of a soft heart and don't care to kill things either so we got the frozen fresh ones. My buddy Erv got the live ones this year that gave me the idea in the first place.
Thanks for setting me straight on the Sailor at Sea prayer Ed. I knew it was something like that but the last time I heard it was from my friend Leo Nesser so many years ago.
The Acoustics in that magnificent Church sure had a great sound David. I can appreciate old world architecture that makes such a beautiful sound like that
So as the Finlanders would say John, "It's a bit vinder" down there I'm not a very religious man but I do speak my peace with the Man Upstairs every morning and night. I'm sure a little religion squeaks by around here at Christmas time. After all that is what Christmas is all about.
Judy picked up some poinsettias and candy canes. We have to go to the cemetery to give them to Kelly.
Dont like to leave on a sad note. Some common sense finally came to me. I don't know why I didn't think of it before. I got stencils made of the four bridges on the main line yesterday, and the other two future ones. I'm going to trace them on 1/8" Masonite, the same thickness of the cork. That way I can install bridge temps today so I can lay my track and start running Trains. This way I can paint and finish my bridges one at a time at my leisure
Happy Here

Good evening all. No sign of any snow; just icy rainfall all day.
Because Friday is Christmas Day, today is 'Burger Day'.
Mushroom and goat's cheese with wedges an peashoot salad.
Bring your favorite drink. A glass of whisky afterwards for everyone.
Good morning .
Ed ..... Thanks for posting the video of UP 4014 and UP 844. We were in Utah and Wyoming for the May 2019 celebration 150th anniversay of the Golden Spike. I took mostly still photos, but did get a good video too.
David ..... Thanks for posting videos of UK trains .
Everybody ..... Smile ! ..... After today, only 8 days remain of 2020.

Glad to be done running all morning. Last stop NE Mpls. Not a big fan. We had to stop by Judy's nephew's to pick up gifts from her family in Wisconsin. It ain't too bad over in NE. I wouldn't be caught on the other side in North though! I prefer to stay put in the Suburbs.
Started raining about 11, got a little heavy around noon and turned to snow shortly after that. Its pilling up quick so I'm glad we started early. Not that I'm worried about driving in the snow in my four-wheel drive. It's the other yahoos you have to worry about
We are home now for the duration of our Lonesome Christmas. All stocked up with everything we need through the New Year
Hope you all have everything you need for the holiday season too
P.S. Like the pictures of 4014 in Utah and Wyoming Garry

Although we shall not be having any grandchildren round our house, we shall still keep up the traditions.
Carrots are bought for the reindeer.
A glass of sherry and a sweet mince pie for Santa. (A tradition from when I lived with my grandparents.)
My son will telephone us and read 'The Night Before Christmas'.
A new one is at six o'clock pm to stand at the door for two minutes and ring bells to help Santa on his travel because of Covid. You see, children will be sleeping at a different place than they normally do on Christmas Eve.

No sign of any snow here either.
We have been forecast cold weather for Christmas day, the high will only be in the 60s. A full fifteen degrees cooler than last year.
It usually reaches the high 70s or low 80s on Christmas, then we have to listen to all the out-of-towners and recent-transplants whining about how it doesn't seem like Christmas when everyone is wearing shorts and swim suits.
What were you expecting?

We are in the middle of a howling blizzard right now. Sixty mph winds are blowing the snow sideways. We made the trip to Walmart at 20 mph and the flashers on. The visibility was, at times, near zero. Even with all of this, I think I like it.
I have a nice wood toboggan in the tool trailer. We have a great big hill nearby. I think I'll have Judy bundle up and bring her for a late night slide later.
We are supposed to hav 2" of rain tomorrow and maybe a dusting of snow Chistmas morning. I can't remember a recent white Christmas, except when we were in Park City 30 years ago.
The e and r died on my computer. Ordered replacement keys hich didn't ork either. Now the w has died. Carumba.

Hey I don't go South for the holidays anyway, Way too many people hangin' out down there this time of year and it is WAY too hot anyway. Heck, I sure wouldn't want to live down there all year! OK to visit in mid January or so, but.......
We have some Snow Birds that had to stay North this year.... Poor things! I might help them build a snow person or something.... Might even reaquaint them to that old kid thing called a Snowball Fight! Yeah!
Had a Asymtomatic Virus test today... The county put it on and will have one here in Geneva every Wednesday for the coming several weeks. Should know tomorrow sometime that I am (hopefully) virus free. They did a great job of handling a few hundred tests. Only wait was in the cars lined up down the road before they started the testing. Things moved very quickly and they had the routine well planned out. From the time I stopped at the first station to check in and get my ID to put on the tube with the swab and the time my car rolled back out in the street was 2 minutes flat!
Hope everyone has a great season and stays safe!!!

Things have been so different on my phone with this site than they ever have before.
I'm getting pop up advertising so huge I can't even read my phone screen let alone type something.
These ads are becoming so invasive they stop what I'm doing so I have to start all over. The darn things are really pissing me off.
I know most of you use computers but does anyone know how I can get rid of or block these things here?
Thanks

Good evening all, I have been biiiiiizzzzzzy with all that is going on around here.
We have snow and that is somewhat rare in these parts.
We finally got our tap delivered late one night, I woke up at 0400hrs and got up and installed it in time for morning coffee. It is so nice to have running water in the kitchen again.
Ed, in that video you posted of "The Train" the flag he grabbed inside was a different colour outside? I tend to notice continuity errors a lot and it drives people crazy when I point them out.
John, congrats on the new Grandaughter and you made me laugh with the weather report of high winds.
Kevin that mould may be a result of pressure washing and not a leak, I have seen that before.
I did the plumbing under the kitchen sink. The plumbing that the builder was responsible for was an ugly mess that always bugged me when I looked under the kitchen sink, I made it a little better.

Glad to see Lion drop by, I was wondering about him, sure wish Ken would report in.

BATMANEd, in that video you posted of "The Train" the flag he grabbed inside was a different colour outside? I tend to notice continuity errors a lot and it drives people crazy when I point them out.
I do the same thing, Brent! It is amazing how often these "oopses" occur even when the production team has "continuity" experts on the set.
Sometimes there's unavoidable "errors" such as in North by Northwest where parts of the filming was done on location in Chicago and New York but interior shots were done in Hollywood.
Someone mentioned "White Christmas" recently. Everyone was on a Southern Pacific train going to Vermont? In fact they all went to sleep on a Union Pacific train and woke up on an SP train!
Another one of my favorites is in Pearl Harbor (2001) where "Rafe" is supposed to be on a train leaving New York (looked like Denver to me) and on the adjoining track sat the California Zephyr which wasn't introduced until six years after the fact.
How often do I see fifty-star American flags in WWII movies! Telephones with the little RJ11 clips on the handsets? Grounded outlets in pre 1950 movies? The list goes on.
Fun Stuff
I'm glad that CP water tank found continued, useful service! Good detective work on your part
I hope everyone is doing well tonight
Good Evening,
A frosty one tonight, windchill of -40. I pulled out my old down parka. Even with a -40 windchill no cold gets through.
Did a grocery pickup today. Quite a few cars in the qeue but they were quick loading the trunk. I got a jar of Robertsons marmalade so I'm set for the season. I couldn't find any mincemeat tarts which is disappointing.
I ran the CP hudson a little. It is a smooth runner but just makes it around my 22" radius, Funnily the CN hudson does better even though it has 80" drivers compared to 75 on th CP loco. There isn't any slack on brass engines so I won't be getting any with 8 drivers. Frankly I have terminated any further brass purchases as I really blew the budget this year.
TF, sending cool breezes your way,
CN Charlie
I could spend the whole day here and they would still have to drag me away at closing time:

Hello Railfans!
We are at T-Minus 23 hours and some change until the launching of the big Red Sleigh when i wrote this. Hope any of you notty fellows done made your peace with the great bearded elf, if not, its a lump of coal for yee!
Just as a sidenote, id really like someone to explain to me when a lump of coal became a bad thing for a model railroader? Especially one modelling the steam era?
And for those of you who have been ogleing the calender greedily marking off the days until this stinking year ends, well, your down to only 7 now.
Ive been hearing for a week now this area is supposed to be under the threat of a "white xmas". While im hoisting the BAH HUMBUG banner on that one i must admit i have been letting a bit of anticipation build over the last days. I firmly stand on the side of the fence of us who wouldnt mind if it snowed by the hopper loads.
And I aint talking no twin bay USRA, i mean one of those 150 ton wood chip totin, beefed up belly-whopper of a hopper! All we've got so far is a purty good n gusty wind. Suprisingly, it isnt all that cold, hmmmm. So lets just say the humbug banner is doing fine up there, waving pretty good - dry.
I would like to take this moment to wish all of you a Merry Christmas. That is, if the egg nog hasnt blurred your vision and you can still read this. And ofcourse, since we endevour to sustain an industry whos motto is "Safety First", dont drink and operate your trains! Or next thing well be hearing is someone like TF whistling "Rudolph got run over by an ALCo.... ".
For those of you who do get snow, and are lucky enough to have a Rapido SP "El Vapouer" Rotary snow blower, do make sure you try to get the neighbors face clearly in the video before you post it. Priceless!
John) I wanna thank you and Fritz M. for the kind words. In lieu of what you said about programming, 3d printing wouldnt agree with you. Even though id say the coding is only 15% of it. The other aspects make the coding seem miniscule.
If your only interested in small projects - a few parts here and there... a model or two, then no. Its way too much expense and hassle.
For small projects resin molding or outright scratchbuilding still gets the nod. Besides, resin molding - while being a miniscule fraction of the cost, still produces much higher detail than 3d printing.
If you have any more questions about it, feel free to ask. On that note folks imma sneak over and snitch me some caboose cookies, definately a handful or two of EDs chocolates (my favorite food group!), and skip-de-do-da-day on out of here.
Merry Christmas one and all of the Diner, and also to our friends under the Kalmbach umbrella! - Douglas - PMR
My young fellow and his partner have recently bought their first home and have asked us if we would celebrate Christmas with them, so her-in-doors and I are off over the hill to Hamilton, tomorrow morning, about a 1 ½ hour drive.
Congratulations to your 'young fellow' and his partner for being able to buy a house! I'm not sure what housing prices are like in NZ, but here in Canada buying a house is a major accomplishment for most young people.
Christmas dinner sounds delightful!
Using social media to communicate during the holiday season has one major advantage - there are significantly fewer dishes to wash!!
Dianne and I wish you the very best for you and your family Bear, both for the Holidays and the New Year as well!!
Merry Christmas!!!
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
The meteorologists have confirmed that we will be in for the coldest Christmas in 17 years! We are worried that we might actually want to turn the heater on. It has never been used in the HVAC system we had installed 4 years ago.
I doubt we will use it.
SeeYou190The meteorologists have confirmed that we will be in for the coldest Christmas in 17 years! We are worried that we might actually want to turn the heater on.
Kevin!!
I'm so sorry to hear that you might have to put a sweater on this Christmas!!
The weather in southern Ontario for the 24th and the 25th is going to go from rain on the afternoon of the 24th to freezing rain and snow on the evening of the 24th, to high winds and heavy blowing snow on Christmas day! The rain is a mere nuisance. The freezing rain is a bit more concerning but only because my son and daughter in law will have to drive through it. Dianne and the kids will likely go for a hike in the local Conservation Area on Christmas day despite the winds.
Darn, I might have to do my coat up, that is if I have to venture outside!
By the way, you can keep your tropical storms and hurricanes to yourselves! I'd rather take a blizzard any day! At least they won't usually blow the roof off!
Merry Christmas Kevin!!
Cheers!!
