Went to K-10 Model Trains today

.

That looks like a great store. All the times I have been to St. Louis, and I never made it to this store. I need to fix this.

Good Morning All,

I'll have a regular, small OJ, full stack of blueberry pancakes and some crispy bacon please.

Spent time last night finishing the yard entrance track though I didn't secure the entry to the service area so I could give it another think and change it if needed. The entry to the main yard is all secured and ready to go, I just need to prove the tracks out and make sure the electric feeds are isloated from each other.

Ken I think the program K-10 put together is a great idea. It's good of you to help out. It has to be daunting to open a catalog or go into a hobby shop and see all the locomotives prominently displayed and most above $300.00 list.

Got up to 35F this morning so of course we are getting rain all day. Wrenched my knee yesterday climbing on ladders so today will probably be spent taking it easy.

On How It's  Made they covered 3D metal printing. Looks interesting but the investment in equipment must be huge. On one of the other forum threads someone was going over how they were scanning friends and trying to make 3D HO figures from the scan. Neat idea, Imagine a layout with all your friends on it.I'll just be happy if I can get what I have to function properly and leave the rest for later.         Chow, J.R.

You need to look at your computer keyboard.  Somewhere over toward the right edge there should be a "delete winter" button.

So far, no one has posted any photos of the D&H, a big player in upstate New York:

Eveing or is it afternoon diners?

Flo get the gang a Beer and show the wine list to JR. Yes leave a stein outside for Ulrich.

Kevin If you are in St Louis again K-10 Model Trains is well worth the time. Limted hours with the owners health problems. I really lucked out, I only live 2 miles from K-10.

JR While Ken the owner does not give the iteams away for free, they went a box marked $1.00 which is darn close to free. Or should I say beside the box, there box was to small.

Time Change Bang Head Yep not a fan of it! Super Angry Just so happen my watch battery decided to give up the ghost last night. Woke up and it ws light out and my watch said it was 12:20? Confused Did I really sleep till after noon?

Time to clear some more car's off the RIP track so later.

Evening folks,

Long week for me I've driven at least 50 miles every day since Tuesday, Wednesday I drove to Vicksburg, spent the first half of the day watching trains at the bridge, finally right as I was going to leave I caught the only train I saw, a KCS manifest with three Belles, a Gevo, Geep, and Ace.

Then I left for Louisiana.

Friday was day one of Bayou Rail Run, ran trains till 10:45 at night, I got to be Pleasant hill Yardmaster, I did ok, trouble was I had pulled all the cars from the industries at Pleasant hill and proceeded to sort the cars for the incoming trains, well we ended up not running all the trains, and I left the cars sitting there so today Jr. Decided to be Pleasant Hill YM and he didn't like how I had set out the cars, it was my first time working a yard so I did alright considering.

Yesterday was ops down at the Crescent City Model Railroad Club, interesting operation via the use of track warrants, I ran a NB Manifest which stalled out on the hill and had to get helper power and the Southbound Sooie Pig hotshot intermodal.

Today I was Addis Yardmaster, being that Addis is a full sized yard unlike pleasant hill I was able to set out all the pickups and build a train without any problems then I finished running 301 (SB Manifest) and then ran 201 Little Rock-NOLA runner, i threw dispatch a curveball when i "laid down" (stalled) on the hill heading into pleasant hill, dispatch sent me back down to Mansfield to take another run at the hill, this time I made it just short of the top of the hill before "stalling" dispatch had Shreveport send two Geeps up to shove and get me into pleasant hill, I love doing that and plan to have that as a built in part of ops on my future railroad, have that one train that is underpowered for that one grade and always give it to the newbie, then have to call up helper power.

All this ops has gotten me thinking, has anyone tried a random event generator, it'd be cool to have scenarios where you have to bad order a loco and order up new power and such.

I'm going to suggest that the club get one of those train boss defect detectors to put on the railroad.

Well that's all for now.

Steve

Good Morning All,

Just a regular to go please Zoe.

Steven - sounds like you had an enjoyable weekend. I always thought in our scale world, there were enough random events while operating but then some layouts probably don't have funny trackwork or out of spec wheel sets. And then if you look out the door, Batman had a fun weekend trying to find the reason his ruling grade had suddenly lost traction. All good fun. What is a train boss defect dectector. Is that an HO version of a hotbox sensor?

Not much done over the weekend though yesterday I did tear out a bunch more approach track and an inspection pit for the turntable. On the prototype, the inspection pit was in the roundhouse, not the approach to it and so it shall be. I am now leaning towards putting all the fuel sand and water in the locomotive storage area behind the back shop and just having service for steam in another spot. There is no surviving New Haven steam power but the area I am roughly modeling is now where the Danbury Railway Museum sits so as I decreed that there is still steam, I need to be able to service it. It may still be best to have the ashpit and coal on the approach to the turntable but I need to scale it down from my grandiose initial plan.

Time to pick up tools and get some w**k done.    CUL, J.R.

a KCS manifest with three Belles,

OK, I give up on your own language for diesels, what are these?

Mike.

EDIT:  Never mind, it's a KCS thing, a retro paint job.

Good morning diners.  Brewed a batch of beer yesterday and hurt my back picking up 5 gal of water.

Let my friend, Mark's dog out this morning.  Very sad to go over there.  I stayed for a while and the dog sat opposite me and just starred at me.

After I posted, I went and searched around.  Evidently it is this paint scheme, supposed to be a retro paint.

I know nothing about the KCS and it's former paint schemes.  The only ones I remember are the white, with red letters.

I pick up the local detector on my scanner, sometimes.  I think channels have moved into the 7 or 8 digits now, my old scanner only goes to 6, so I don't get all that I used to.

Oh, yeah.... I spent some time Saturday night setting all of the clocks in my room ahead one hour. I mean really, how many people have five clocks in their room?

So any way I was to Mattins and Mass on time, but then I came down here to play on the computer, andwhen I went up for noon prayer, it was all over as was dinner. It seems I had not changed the clock in my office yet. I Have four more clocks to change, but two of them are up in the train room.

Oh Yeah... I still had to do the dinner dishes on Sunday even though I did not get to eat any of the turkey.

That's called pennance Lion.Oops - Sign

I think all the RR radios as well as most of the other voice frequencies had to be changed a couple of years ago to comply with the FCC expanding frequencies for other digital applications. My old scanners don't work at all anymore at the race track and I know we had to change all the radios at the museum as well.

Kansas City Southern Belles are these,

It's kinda a heritage paint scheme, like BNSF "Heritage I, II, III" schemes.

The defect detector is like a hotbox detector, it also detects 5 other defects, like dragging equipment, flat spot, sliding wheel, shifted load, ect...

I forgot to mention a while back I saw not one but TWO CN Draper Tapers on a grain train!

Wow, this time change is really being hard on me this year.

.

I woke up at 4:00 AM to drive to Orlando for a meeting, but my body still thought it was 3:00 AM! Wow am I beat.

.

The meeting just ended, and I don't think it is safe for me to drive 4 hours back home like I feel, so I am getting a hotel.

Drowsy driving is exceptionally dangerous.

Smart man Kevin.  I have always thought just driving in Florida at all was exceptionally dangerous. Running 27 South to Sebring before it was made 4 lanes wide was always gut wrenching in the rigs. Even if you tried to leave room for safety, someone would cut in front of you and usually hit the brakes for good measure.  Now you have time to get over to HD and obtain some paint stripper for your caboose project if you want...........    J.R.

Using a scanner to listen to defect detectors can be a good railfanning stratigy. For example, last friday I was in Utica, and since it's not my "home teritory", I listened on my scanner for trains coming off detectors east and west, so I would know to get ready for a train. Hopefully some more time for modeling soon Wink

Howdy

The current KCS paint scheme is very similar to what was used for the KCS Southern Belle which was a passenger train that operated between Kansas City and New Orleans in the 1940’s and 1950’S.

Good move Kevin.  I fell asleep once after 30+ hour shift.  I was less than 100 yards from home watching myself drive toward the ditch just like a day dream.   I decided this could be real and did wake up stopping a couple feet from the ditch.

My roommate was driving home from college and one our dorm mates was driving and started to drive off the road, they looked at him, saw his eyes were open and thought he was awake.  He was not and rolled the car and was himself ejected.

Everyone survived without significant injuries.

Am I the only one who never heard of R Kelly or his music?  Wiki says he's a big deal in R&B

I have heard of Saturday Night Live's Joe Piscipo.  Back in the day I thought he must use steroids.  He's a radio talk show host these days.  The link to his recent video interview by Marie Bartiromo would be construed as political, but I'd bet money not one of you guys that remember him "live" would recognize him.

More lack of recognition.  My next door neighbors' kid went to college on a lacrosse scholarship. He is only in his mid 20's.  He lived at home a couple years and moved out at the end of summer.  He was about 5-10, very good looking guy.  I saw him this weekend and he has put on about 40 pounds in 6 months.

You should consider yourself fortunate.  If more of us never heard of him and similar individuals, maybe they would just go away and the world would be a saner place.

Good Morning All,

Early start today as I have to go to the engine builders shop to try to sort the problems with his latest development. Makes way too much heat so we are needing to redesign the whole cooling system on the cars. Not sure what happened but we parked the Lotus23 at Sebring because of it.

Ken, thanks for the wine list. I picked a nice Pinot Noir and sat back to watch the UConn womens team on the tube (that would be basketball).  Sorry but I think with Jerry you just can't fix stupid.

Got the last of the yard turnouts done last night including the actuator cable for the switch part.

  040 by J.R. Mitchell, on Flickr" alt="Still River reroute " />

015 by J.R. Mitchell, on Flickr" alt="switch control cable" />

If the pictures transfer, you can see the piano wire inserted into the switch. Once that is done, I put the wire into a piece of 3/32 shrink tube and dig a ditch to route it all below the tracks and surface of the foam sheet. Once that is done and the turnout is secured to the foam base or road bed and the wire checked for operation, I fill in the ditch with latex caulk and go on to the next turnout. This has allowed me to route all the traffic in the yards without reaching into the yard and knocking everything about. Seems to work well so far.

Well, here's my to go coffee. I'll catch y'all later, J.R.
