Hunter - When we met in January of 2000, you were just a 6 week old pup who walked his way into this heart of mine as the only runt in the litter who would come over to me. And today, I sit here and tell you I am sorry we had to put you down. It was the best thing for you and also the right thing to do. May you now rest in peace and comfort. Love, Dad. 8 June 2010
I love you and miss you Mom. Say hi to everyone up there for me. Rest in peace and comfort. Love, John. 29 March 2017
Evening Diners
Flo, I will have a If Ed makes it in give him one as well.
Work Front It was a pretty day out so I knew I would be slow.
Weather Sure as cooled down here as well and I like it. Today high was 72 and a lot of sunshine.
Train Front Ed is it Bessiemer or Besslemer? Either way it is a great SD 7! Got a good lub job done of the trucks. (front worm gear poped off again?) smooth and quite runner! Like you I do enjoy the splash of color. While I love B&O, well blue can get a little (not much) boring. Was Bessiemer or Besslemer near the great lakes? I am thinking they mainly hauld Iron Ore for some reason.
Gary Looks better painted! Seems a little odd the coaches started out as GMC Buses.
BBQ is done so later.

I hate Rust
Evenin' folks!
Janie, I'll have a Hot Fudge Sundae and a pot of decaf Coffee to wash it down with and warm me up.
The heat is on here at my house. Hasn't run yet tonight, but it will. As John (who lives about 50 miles directly East of me) said the temps are going down into the 40"s tonight and into the high 30's tomorrow night. Just hope the frost holds off for a few more weeks. My fall crops in the garden are looking good. Peas are growing quite fast, String beans are being picked every other day, And the green peppers are finally producing nicely. Hate to lose it all now!
I am starting to decide what the final bridge will be on the SLO&W. Talked to an old friend who has drawn many structures over the years and is a published author and he suggested I build a Through Truss type for that location. Probably will end up building a Warren or a Pratt type. Checking out designes and such from the him in the (Kalmbach) Model Railroad, Bridges and Trestles Book right now. The length will be about 175 scale feet, so this will be a major project for this Winter. I am putting in a temporary crossing so I can start to run trains as I finsh this last area of the layout.
For those who don't much about the Finger Lakes Region of NYS. I offer this: http://www.fingerlakes.com/youknow

Happy Birthday FRRYKid. So how old are you today?
Old enough that I wouldn't be carded at most any place if I drank alcohol. To put it another way, the prototype railroad I follow merged out of existance only a couple of years before I was born.
Heartland Division CB&Q FR RY .. happy birthday. .. The decks of flat cars get scuzzy looking after heavy use. If they are wood construction they look even worse. So your weathering should resemble that.
For the particular prototype, the Northern Pacific managed to keep their woods decks looking pretty good until the merger and BN let them "rot" but for part of the era I model the decks still looked pretty good from what I have been told, so I will model the deck that way. The rest of the car will be weathered similar to a pic that I found on one of the photo sites that I use.
cudakenEd is it Bessiemer or Besslemer?
Hi, Ken
I'm pretty sure the name originates from the process for making higher volumes of steel by blowing oxygen through the puddle developed by a one, Henry Bessemer. The purpose of the railroad was to haul iron ore and limestone from the Conneaut, Ohio port to the steel mills of Pittsburgh.
http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/ble/ble-dies.html
You would be able to run Bessemer F7s on your B&O since they bought 10 F7As and 10 F7Bs from the Bessemer. B&O ran them for a few years still in B&LE orange paint.
The restored B&O 722 was a former B&LE F7.
http://www.railpictures.net/photo/430413/
The B&LE was once owned by US Steel and has its beginnings rooted in Andrew Carnegie's vast Empire. Today the line is owned and run by Canadian National Railway.
There's nothing wrong with having leased, borrowed or run-through power on your layout.
Have Fun! Ed
Ken - The Bessemer & Lake Erie also provided passenger service until the early 70's, or somewhere around there.
Like some others, I had to turn the furnace on this evening. I don't like the idea of what my gas bills will look like for the upcoming months, but I must admit it sure felt good this evening. it was getting chilly in the house around dinner time. I'll have to stop & get a replacement filter tommorow though, the current one is really dirty. The air conditioner side got a workout this year & I should have checked the filter sometime ago. Guess it's time to break out the sweaters & long sleeve shirts.
A good weekend for our railfanning. 12 trains on Saturday, & 13 today. We have noticed we are not seeing as many coal or crude oil trains as we had been, but intermodal service seems to have increased, at least while we are trackside. Some pleasant conversations with a couple of other regulars fills in the time between trains. I might have mentioned this before, but we were talking about the local police who usually drive by at least once while we are sitting there. They never fail to wave or yell hello as they go by. Quite a difference experience from what some others report while they are railfanning. We also get some people who stop & ask if we are waiting for anything special to come by. I always tell them any train coming by is special, but not really.
I am getting old & slow. I noticed on Saturday that the focus on my camera seemed to be fuzzy in the view finder, but the pictures seemed okay. Then it finally dawned on me that I got new glasses early in the week. So I had to adjust that little wheel on the camera, I don't know what they call it, but it's located up by the view finder. So now the camera's fine, & I don't need to worry about getting it repaired. What a relief because I know that wouldn't be cheap.
Don't know why I'm up in the middle of the night. It's not good because tommorow will be a busy day like every Monday. Breakfast at our usual diner, grocery shopping, & what looks to be a full day of errands including the library & a dozen other stops the wife has scheduled.
Hope everyone has a great week.
Tom

You wouldn't be thinking of the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie, would you, Tom?
The last Bessemer passenger train was run March 5, 1955.
P&LE ran commuter trains out of Pittsburgh to Beaver Falls (College Hill) until July 12, 1985.
Happy Monday, Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Columbus Day, everybody!
Regards, Ed
Good morning all
That little wheel on the camera eyepiece is called a "diopter".
cool 46 here again, supposed to get in to the middle 70's today.
Quite a bit of train traffic yesterday on the P&I , Mostly coal, some locals.
I got 5 ( count em) strom windows removed, repainted and put back up.
It is amazing how much the paint had faded over time.
Have a great day!
Mornin' everyone!
Zoe, I'll have a couple of those sour cream glazed dougnuts over there on the counter abd a large pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast Coffee to start the day.
It is a crisp (nice word for cold) fall day here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS this morning. Alternating clouds and sunshine at the moment. I guess that may be called "Partly" I think... Leaves are starting to turn color quickly now. Colors were nice for the Fall Foliage trips last Saturday. The trees were further along than here at my home. My crab apple tree has started to drop some leaves already.
Currently 46°F outside with a Frost Advisory for tonight. I won't cover my vegies untill they proclaim a frost warning! Here in town the temp will always stay a few degrees higher than out in the country. Furnace was running when I got out of bed today.... The heating season has started............
I have to drive to Rochester this afternoon to check out the Firehouse we will be using for the NMRA Division Meet in a couple of weeks. Things are starting to fall into place. I have 3 excellent clinics lined up and three layouts open for the afternoon. Have to get decided who does what when as far as the clinics and get a newsletter out for it.
Good morning ..
MoeLarryCurly .... Feel free to bring some cinnamom rolls to the DIner from Kirchoff's Bakery in Paducah some time.
Lunch time
Hello all. This weekend we went to the Marine Muesuem in Triangle Va. ( Free and done really well ) my wife was freaked out by the dummies, she said LOOK ! They have sweat and even dirt under their finger nails !!! She said this as she stepped back three paces !!! even fake Marines can be terrifying , then we went to smash burgers for some heart clogging burgers and onion wrings and topped the evening off with going to see "Sully" the movie on the piolt who "landed" his plane on the Hudson. REALLY Good movie. I like most movies with Tom Hanks.
Howmus - LOL "Write incomplete" - With all of the volunteer work at the NMRA have you applied for your master modelers certs in any area ?
Moeand Larry - You are painting storm windows or the windows behind the storm windows ?
Tom - LOL "focus camera fuzzy..." I have the same problem !
GM Pullman - What does putting oygen into the steel do ? #722 F7 looks great !
FRRYKid - hope you have many many more !
Angel - what ? "praying for the dead from the storm ???
Ken - Any BBQ left ?
JPowel - 36 degrees !!! Ouch we are in our 50s here - nice ! : )
Mr. B - So what did the winning "wife" weigh ?
Garry - LOL Short friends - I always say I am 6'-4" on one end the other end of me is short end !
CN Charlie - 30! Man you guys need to move south ! Do you like the cold ?
Henry - LOL ! Never a truer statement " liftable before marriage" ! I know a man who owns a plumbing company. He divorced his second wife becaue she got fat !!! I guess that is what happens when one writes their own vows - "till fat do us part"
Gotta run TTYL

FRRYKidOld enough that I wouldn't be carded at most any place if I drank alcohol. Big Smile
Ha! The last time I got carded was last year, at one of those places that cards absolutely everyone. I gave him my Medicare card. He laughted and said, "OK."
FRRYKidFor the particular prototype, the Northern Pacific managed to keep their woods decks looking pretty good until the merger and BN let them "rot" but for part of the era I model the decks still looked pretty good from what I have been told, so I will model the deck that way.
I built 3 of these from Tichy kits, and topped them with real wood decking.
Ray, this is the Central Valley truss bridge I built a while back:
This isn't an easy snap-together kit. I found it quite a challenge and I had a lot of fun putting it together.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
Love that bridge!
Afternoon folks....
Just taking a break from working on some issues in the new part of the layout for a few minutes.... Will be heading to Rochester shortly to check out the Fire Station where the Fall meet will be held.
YGW, yes on the certificates. I have earned Electrical, Scenery, Civil, Volunteer, and Association Official. About half way through Structures and need to work on either (building) Rolling Stock or Motive Power to qualify for MMR (Master Model Railroader). Probably two to three years from qualifying.
Mister Beasley, very nice work on the bridge, my friend! The one I'm making will have to be scratch built (I intend to use it toward completeing the Structures Certificate) and likely be of a higher load rating. This will have to be an E-60 to E-65 for my heavy locos (2-6-6-2) to be able to use the bridge (and be prototypical..... Important for the Certificate...). The Central Valley looks to be an E-50 load rating at first glance. Hope mine comes out looking as good as yours! That will be a project for the days at home during the winter!
I would certainly promote those of you that are NMRA members to look into and try the AP program. I can tell you I have learned an immense amout of information and skills by working the program. Certainly took my work to a much higher level even if I never get everything done for MMR!
MisterBeasleyThis isn't an easy snap-together kit. I found it quite a challenge and I had a lot of fun putting it together.

MR B I've heard that before. Do all the bits and pieces require individual fitting?
YGW pig iron + oxygen = steel. Do you know anything about a tank museum at Ft Lee? There was (maybe still is) an outdoor display of maybe 100 tanks from WW1 on, rusting away. It is supposed to move to Ft Lee, VA and be built around the Krup K5 railway gun. http://www.militaryfactory.com/armor/detail.asp?armor_id=526

Good Afternoon,
Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow Canucks! No turkey here today as there is only my wife and I for dinner. She hurt her back a few days ago so we are taking it easy. We will have MIL over for some Chinese dinner tomorrow. I do miss the big spreads MIL used to put on but after my FIL passed away in 2008, she hasn't hosted any large family dinners.
In anticipation of my birthday next month, I ordered a present for myself. It is an Athearn RS3 in CNR green and yellow. I had a CP version of the same loco but sold it along with all my other CP locos. I was surprised to see this loco on Klein's site but it is listed as a warehouse find and is no longer available from Athearn. I also ordered a TCS decoder for it as they have great motor control. I have a MRC sound only diesel decoder I will put into it too. It sounds fine to me and it has the 244 alco sound set.
I heard from my urologist and the surgery date has been set. It is Dec.19th. The delay is fine as I'm on a drug to shrink my prostate first and it takes about 6 months for max effect. It also stops the cancer. My PSA was only .7 in August.
YGW, you do get used to the cold to some degree and 30F isn't very cold in my opinion. At least we don't have to worry about hurricanes.
Mr. Beasley, nice bridge! I built the same one only N scale. Sure were a lot of small parts!
Have a good day,
CN Charlie

I didn't have the opportunity to see that movie when it was here but I plan to rent it when it comes out on DVD. First (and TTBOMK the only) time ever that a jumbo jet has landed on water and everyone survived.
As to the b-day statement so do I.
BigDaddy MR B I've heard that before. Do all the bits and pieces require individual fitting?
Yes, the kit has lots of pieces and a lot of them need to be cut to fit. The girders are each made up of 4 flat sides which must be glued together and care must be taken to keep them square. Then, they must be cut to size, using the template provided to get the diagonal cuts right. You'll need a sharp knife and a razor saw.
Since it's a model, the stresses are different. The deck actually carries all the weight and has steel reinforcements inside. The superstructure is purely ornamental. It fits over the deck. I never even glued it in place.
On my layout, the bridge is on a liftoff section which connects two major parts of the layout. I purposely chose a higher-end bridge to catch the viewers' eyes and draw attention away from the fact that it's only a narrow liftoff.
I surrounded the bridge with a lot of scenery to further hide the reality of the liftoff section.
FRRYKid First (and TTBOMK the only) time ever that a jumbo jet has landed on water and everyone survived.
First (and TTBOMK the only) time ever that a jumbo jet has landed on water and everyone survived.
A remarkable achievement indeed, but minor point, an Airbus A320 is not a jumbo jet. It's not big enough to fit that definition (two or more aisles in the passenger cabin).
Evening Dinners
Flo, I will have a and if Ed makes it in give him one as well in a Frosted Bessemer mug.
Work Front Was sort of busy with 8 customers in the first 5 hours. Most people bought but again it was Nickel and Dime stuff. But it was way better than the last few days with $1785.00 in sales.
Take A Engine To Work Day. Took the PK 2000 GP7 I bought say 5 months ago. Had to hard wire it and cannot get the shell on! Tin Can gave me a extra GP7 chassis and that is the one I screwed up hard wiring. Dang LED leads are what causing the fittment problems. Then I went Brain Dead! Used the other chassis and used the stock DDC coversion shocket and the shell went on! Got it home and programed the decoder and gave her a run!
Poof went the head light! Reason I went Brain Dead? Well Ed SD7's he sent me have light bulbs and are DCC engines, so I forgot. Ed how did you do that?
Ed I know you know why I missed spelled Bessemer. But any way you spell it, it is a great running engine!
FRRY Belated Sorry I am late.
Later, Ken
Hi, Diners
Just popping in for a quick nightcap and to answer Ken's question.
I'm pretty sure I wrote down the decoder on a slip of paper sent with the engines, Ken. It was probably a Digitrax DH-123. Many of my early installs I used 16V. grain of wheat lamps. The original L-Ls were something like 5 volts. No resistor was needed for 16 volt bulbs but they do get HOT. There were very few white LED available then and they were somewhere around $3. ea.
By now there has been some explanation of the Bessemer Process. It is what brought about high volume, consistent quality and low cost steel. Before Bessemer steel production was in small batches and sometimes even hand mixed by "puddlers". In England steel prices dropped from £40 to around £6 per long ton.
(Gee— I wonder what committee decided to place the nice, red, car park sign right there!)
The Basic Oxygen Furnace replaced the Bessemer process in the late 1940s.
Best wishes to all!
Break time !
To all of our canadian friends Happy Thanksgiving. Curious are your Thanksgiving traditions the same as those here in the states where we (supposdely) give thanks to God for the abundance and blessings bestowed upon us?
GM Pullman - Thats a big drop in cost ! Thanks for sharing the info.
Ken - You have to use a BIGGER hammer ! Most things will fit with more persuasion ! Maybe not in the same state they started in That is a neat picture you shared. I love the perspective.
FRRYKid - LOL "So do I "
Mr. B. Nice work ! How many hours from start to install did that bridge take ?
CN Charlie - True but we dont have that many hurricanes here in Va. But you have a LOT more cold than we have hurricanes. I do you deal with the cold when it is God awful minus zero temps ? Do you work outside in that ?
Herrinchoker - Oh Thanks !
Henry - No I have not heard of that but I bet it would be fascinating ! In the marine musuem that had a real Sherman tank in there, a Corsair, dauntless dive bomber and several other prop planes hanging from the ceiling. First it bogles my mind the structeral requirments to hold these in the air and then how in the world did they get them in and THEN LIFT them up !
Howmus - When you submit for the for your project or paprerwork for review when do you do that ? At the meets once every three months ?
TTYL
I'll sit in the corner booth with YGW. .... Coffee and a donut please.
Mr. B ... Nice bridge !
Ed ... Speaking of steel mills. I saw some great HO models of steel mill cars when I was in Paducah. There are about 50 cars, and my friend with the LHS in Paducah has them listed on Ebay for over $3,000. ... As impressed as I was, I will not buy them.
Steven .... I have not seen you post in a few days. Are you on vacation? We'll follow the rules regardless. Actually, I have a question for you but will wait.
Cheers, everybody.

Small World, Garry! I just bought some books from Classic Trains & Ferraris! I did see the listing for the steel mill cars. I have plenty of these cars on hand anyway. That's a big chunk of $$! Maybe he should sell them individually.
Here's my "Big Bertha!"
See you folks later...
Ed
Ed .... Bill had some of those big bottle cars in the group. They all look scuzzy and grimy. I, too, have purchased books from Bill. Next time you communicate with him, tell him hello from me.
My steel mill is based on the Walthers models.
Hi gang,
Chloe, my usual lunch please, A double Denver, homefries and bring the blender so I can thin it down, and a Dr. P. to chase.
YGW. When I saw your question to CN. Charlie, I couldn't help but answer.
One evening before Christmas, many years ago, I was about 100 miles east of the City and having a real difficult time in keeping any heat in the bus. I was doing everything I could including putting cardboard in between the shutters and the rads and covering the outside of the shutters as well and it just wasn't helping much at all. I thought I would walk over to the thermometer on the service station wall and see just how cold it was. Now it was facing the wind, so wind chill wise it read -53 F. Thats enought to freeze the - - -s off a brass monkey, as the old saying goes. Do we like it ? NO. But we take it because we feel it's better than getting home and finding your house has eloped with one of those hurricanes or Tornados.. We do get tornados here, but not as often and most likely not as violent as south of the 49th.\
Enjoying the modelling being shown on a number of the threads right now. You guys are amazing, and I consider you my mentors even though some of you are young enough to be my Grandkids.
Must go and shovel some snow, pick up land mines from the dogs and go to get some more makings of land mines for them from the feed store.
Hey, check this out,,,, this is my 2000 post. How about that. But if I live to be 100 i"ll never catch our departed Buddy Jeff.
Garry, I don't think I knew that you had a steel mill on your layout. Looks great blended in with the backdrop.
