Provided, of course, that you have at least one plain old telephone on the line.

Yup! Got one. It was giving me some grief a while ago. Lots of static. I opened it up, cleaned the contact points, and she was fine. Try doing that with a solid state phone!

I even have an old rotary dial phone which still probably works, although I'm not sure if Bell supports the technology anymore.

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed and I will have a Beer please. What Ed is working in the kitchen? Good thing I have some left ove BBQ at the house. Whistling

Felt pretty good today when I got up. Figuers, and I felt like caboose on my days off! Dis cut up most of the old fence before work. Hauld it to work and it is in the dumpster.

Work/Train Front. Yes I took more engines to work with me. Good thing I did, only 4 customers in 9 hours. 3 of the customers bought but nothing worth a dang. So chaulk it up as a moral victory.

SD7's. This time it went so easy to get both SD7's fixed it was all most a disappointment. Way Ed hardwired the decoders I could get the weight off with out any cutting of wires. Worm gear covers had poped off during shipping for some reason? Only thing that went wrong is I forgot my Lithium grease and motor oil.

Ed Only SD7 I have ran so far is the Pen. She ran fine but needs to gear lub. Any tips on getting the trucks open besides just prying? That is what I have done in the past.

 Later, Ken

Hi all,

My family and I decided to leave Orlando yesterday morning around 930. We're safe and sound in DC visiting my relatives tonight, thank you all for the well wishes. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected.

On the MR front, fixing my two out of commision steamers will be priority for the month. I have some ideas on how to fix the crossbeam on the one BLI K4.

CentralGulf wrote the following post 2 hours ago: They do in the US, not sure about Canada.

I know there was a big fuss a few years ago because Bell wanted to stop supporting the rotary phones. There was a huge outcry because lots of people, seniors in particular, were still using the old phones and they were bound and determined that Bell was not going to force them to change, or spend more money.

One of these days I will plug it in and see what happens.

Years ago my dad took the ancient phone out of my grandparents' home (the house had been sold) and installed it in our basement. This was the type of phone where you had an ear piece on a cord and a mouth piece mounted to a box on the wall. There was a rotary dial. He thought it would be funny to actually wire it into the phone line. Shortly after he did that a couple of Bell Telephone repair guys showed up at the door. They said there was a short circuit in our phone lines. When they saw the old phone they weren't too pleased. Apparently the phone drew so much power that it messed up their whole system. It got disconnected pretty quick.LaughLaugh

CGW121:

I don't have call display. Our land line is through Bell Canada and they want more than $10.00 per month for call display. IMHO that is a serious ripoff and I refuse to pay it. I'm going to start shopping around for an alternate supplier.

I don't have a problem with bogus calls on my cell phone, likely because it is rarely left on.

We could get a phone line with our cable/internet provider but their service is not 100% reliable. Every so often their service goes down for a few hours. We have never had the Bell system fail in 40+ years of dealing with them, even during power outages.

Dave

I got rid of the land line years ago and only have a cell phone. When I had a land line I would give that number to people I did not want to talk to so it never got answered.

As to rotary phones, we had one up in Minnesota when we lived there. My youngest daughter saw it, she was 15 maybe, got a quizzical look on her face and asked dead seriously "How does it work?" first time she had ever saw one. I liked it cause it had a real bell so I could hear it from all parts of the house with ease.

Good morning ..

Alvie... Good to know you left FL and family is safe. We postponed our trip until some time next year.

Ken .... I like the photo from the museum in St. Louis.

CGW121.... Speaking of rotary dial phone, my mother still owned one when she passed away in May of this year. Times have changed. Remember when companies had switchboard operaters?

My best memories are traveling by train before Amtrak.

First phone I remember was a 7 party line our number was 8025j1 friend down the street was 8025w1. My son wanted the rotary phone for his business, he is a film maker, but he had to quit using it because it confused his building phone system some how. It would be cool to use them on a layout to call dispatch for clearance.

Morning all

Have a question for you all. I met with the electricians this morning to discuss electric needs for the barn and hobby room. Anyone have a suggestion in power needs for the room train equipment. I hope to incorporate Signal, sgl and dbl track, accent lighting, buildings lighting etc. This will be on top of the normal room lighting.

Central gulf - funny ! Hi for the juggle

Ed the NRA museum was AWSOME. They even had RR guns there I think from the B&O

Dave that's a funny story. Tucked off phone techs !

Alvie glad you are safe in DC lots to do here while visiting!

Ken where us that photo from ?

Jeremy - dis the fish die before or after the crack ?

JPowell - what will you be selling ? Train stuff ?

Angel - are you going to buy any ?

Mielarry - chili dog giving you trouble ? Ever seen duck dynasty where the guy wins a T-shirt for eating so many dogs ? Funny stuff

Richard - they had some John Browning stuff at the NRA

Howmus the oddest thing when on my phone I cannot see all of your post. Most everyone else's is okay

Henry if at all possible you should try to make it to see the museum it is worth the trip !

Looks like I found a sympathetic crowd for unwanted phone calls.  I have a model v202 by the previously listed company.  I have taken to blocking area codes instead of individual numbers as it only has 1000 number memory.  I have 129 area codes blocked and 520 numbers and it's only a year old.  Their newest model blocks the calls with totally bogus numbers like 57  or 1591.

There is a Youtube guy, Ian, who has a Forgotton Weapon channel.  military, old prototypes, 3rd world copies or just really cool old guns.  He takes most of them apart and discusses their similarities or differences from other guns.  For instance an M16 bolt is very similar to a WW2 Johnson rifle, because Johnson worked with Stoner.  Here is his tour of the Cody museum

Went to solder my RS3 lights and speaker and realized the clearance for the speaker is not adequate to assemble the hood.  If Cousin Vinnie will permit a quote from Bart Simpson, "Carumba"

Greetings, Diners!

I only slept about three hours this morning so I need a cup of good, stiff, G.M.& O. Coffee with Chicory, Please Flo. I'll take the leftover home to stain some ties and strip paint off a few Athearn shells.

I remember riding the Abraham Lincoln from St. Louis to Chicago just before Amtrak. They had a rebuilt heavyweight diner and I sure remember the coffee that was served. Wow! Knock-your-socks-off!

Asked the steward if the coffee was OK and he proudly responded, "Oh, sir. That's the chicory in there that gives it that rich flavor." Dead

Just use your smallest, flat-bladed screw driver from your Harbor Freight set, Ken. It is tricky and it seems like you will break one of the tabs but they do finally get free. Do one side, then the other side should lift right off. Be careful to get the axle bearings seated (floating) before you snap the cover back on.

Union Switch & Signal actually made some M1911A1 .45s toward the end of WWII. Of course, Railway Post Office and some Railway Express employees were armed with company issued firearms. Some railroad police departments were larger than what a good-sized city might have!

It is a cool and beautiful fall day here in N-E Ohio. Tomorrow, Mrs. Pullman and I are off to Jefferson, for the Ashtabula County Covered Bridge Festival. Jefferson is also the home of the AC&J Railroad so I'll stop by and see what's up with those folks.

I hope everyone is doing well today and especially the folks who may have been affected by Matthew!

Thoughts and prayers to all...

Whatever they allow me to. For the most part, as long as sellers meet all the requirements for the various products, etc, they can sell whatever they want to.

Yay!  Once again, my daughter and her boyfriend placed 4th in the North American Wife Carrying Championships!  He hurt his leg a few weeks ago and they didn't think they'd even be able to participate, but thankfully it was not the break they originally diagnosed, and they were out there competing with the best.

We still have a land line, but only because it came as part of the cable-internet bundle.  That phone rings half a dozen times a day, always around meal times.  I listen to the recording message, and there is hardly ever a message left.

If someone isn't going to leave a message, I don't want to talk with them.  I get very few junk calls on my cell phone.  They've started "spoofing" calls to local area codes, because if I don't recognize the area code I won't even answer.

The trouble with ignoring other than local area codes on cells is the simple fact that a lot of people have cells with out of town area codes. And you are right on the money with the spoofing. A certain "local" number was constantly sending me empty texts with some sort of attachment. All I got was a prompt to open the attachement, which I never did. I now have that number and a few others blocked with the free app "Mr Number." It's available on Android, but I don't know about Apple or Winders phones.

THEY have a land lion, but the NEVER answer it. All the people that they want to talk to know to use the cell phone. LandLION if for "emergency" use or something.

Speaking of bundles, we just dropped our cable provider and now will bundle TV with Telleyphone and Internet. We only use landlions here. The kind that are mounded on the wall and you turn the crank...

All we can get on that thing are crank calls!

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed and I will have a Beer.

Got deep down in the dumps on the way home thinking about $, or said lack of. I was so down in the dumps I all most did not run the trains! Took a few brews but I feel better now and after some wheel cleaning everything is better.

Ed Took the Pen SD7 for a few spins around the layout. Tracked very well I will add. Do by chances do you remember what decoder you used? Yes, I know I can look. Looks like a Digitrax but you all sent a NCE decoder for the switcher. Good looking engine and I do like the rice bulb you installed.

YGW The photo was from the St Louis Transportation Museum.

 See you all Sunday, Ken

Good Evening,

Getting to be a frosty evening here with a low tonight of about 30F. It only went to about 40F today.

Well tonight I thought I would try my BLI light mike again and the chuff sound is back!  Now I just have to re-programme it.  I have been running the N scale layout a bit lately. I think I will get back to doing some scenery on it.

We have a land line as we want an absolutely secure line.

Time for a little TV.

Hey guys,

I bit the bullet and bought a UP F3, NW2 and a Warren tank car.

I will try to make the town of Pinder Shaw. A fictional branch line and town passing through the town of Lexington, NE.

It will be the second time I had attempted it. I hope this time I might succeed.

The timeline will be the same as the New York Central, (1957-1965) but it's staying in the 1950s 1955-1958. Because of the FEF #838 she retires in 1961. Then moved into storage in 1962.

We will see what happens.

Ms. Flo, would you happen to have any birthday cake Oreoes in the back? Considering I doubt you would have any birthday cake hiding, that will work for me as today is my birthday.

Hobby Front: Got the brakewheels attached on my flatcars and got them painted. I haven't decided quite how to weather them. India ink/isopropyl or else a black paint/distilled water mix. I have the paint but I would need to get the India ink ordered. I thought I had a bottle but I can't seem to find it. (Of course, when I get the new one, I will find it. I just did that with my Kadee coupler pliers. I ordered a pair and just discovered earlier this evening that the pair I thought I lost was hiding in the stand where a lot of my in-town train stuff sits.) I am also planning to paint some windows and doors for the new engine house. Have to pull out the Scalecoat II as that was the only line I could find the particular green that I need for this purpose. That requires the use of some fairly smelly cleaner to clean the brush. However, if I want the color, I have to deal with the smell.

I thought it was particularl Politically Incorrect that the rules specify that the team must consist of one man and one woman and both must be over 21.  That may be because the first prize is the "wife's" weight in beer.  The rules allow for the wife to carry the husband.

This year's winning couple were from the "Clydesdale Division" with a combined weight over 350 pounds.

Mornin' everyone..............

Yawn!!!!  Someone did that on train yesterday and I poked some fun at him...  An hour later he caught me doing the same thing.   Oooooooooppppppsss!  They had a lot of fun at my expense.

Ah, Zoe, I'll have a short stack of blueberry pancakes (yes use the mix from Birket Mills in Penn Yan), some bacon, and a very, very large pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast Organic, Fair Traded coffee this morning to see if I can wake up....

Great day yesterday!  Four completely sold out runs on the LA&L with our NYC Empire Express Coaches (that saw their first day of service on Dec. 7, 1941).  This year we only went from Lakeville, NY to Industry Station, then the engineer walked to the other end of the train took control of the antique ALCO C-425 at the other end and took us back to Lakeville.  We were supposed to have about 45 minutes to clean, reset supplies, and board the next group of passengers and make the next run.  Somebody figured wrong, and we had no time between detrained one group and the boarding of the next...  If someone sends me a photo of the old guy with the beard all fancied up in a black suit and tie with his conductors hat on, I'll post it as a very unusual catch!

Today is recovery day.  I'll be cleaning house, doing grocery shopping, and just some odds and ends needing to be done last week at the latest around here.
