Afternoon Diners,

Heartland Division CB&Q

I definately like the idea of the RIP Track posted at the beginning of each month. I think retaining Jeffrey as the name is good.

So... What !? It's going to be named Jeffrey's RIP track Diner.

Modeling the G.N.O. Railway, The Diamond Route.

Sir Madog
. . .May I suggest to end the discussion on the Diner name. . .

Your suggestion seems to appeal to the majority, so, I am of the Yul Brynner school of thought, "So let it be written; so let it be done."

I wonder if there is any way to get the avatars of the all  of fallen members. The RIP Track could include their on-line images. (Steve?)

Good afternoon all.

Flo, a slice of that apple pie, please. Oh yes, vanilla ice cream on top would be good, thanks.

Name change - Keeping Jeffery's Trackside diner named as such is fine, or changing if others want is fine as well. Just keep someone's name here, not just Trackside Diner. Much less personal.

Weather - Still very humid, but is cooler today than the past two.

Hobby - As promised, a few pics of current projects -

First, recently assembled kit, a Bowser Open Hopper kit.

EL Hopper kit 1

Trucks have base coat, Bearing caps need highlighted (blue seems most common color used), and then a black wash to tone it down a bit. The rest of the car has yet to be weathered. (If anyone has a technique they really like for trucks, let me know!)

Next, an old gondola, also in EL paint, that has the weathering started, but is not yet finished.

EL Gondola

I have done nothing on the trucks, so need to get that done. It will get another coat to fade and some grime added.

I also am working on some other kits, an Accurail covered hopper, in NS paint, it needs final detailing, and then weathering, a Scaletrains boxcar kit that I just need to do the wheelsets, and then weather the body, another Bowser hopper in EL paint, and a Roundhouse "reefer" kit, that needs paint and decals on body, then final assembly and weathering. No pics of these, as they are still parts and pieces. The three old EL cars will be heavily faded and weathered, as they are older for my layouts timeframe.

Well, all have a good afternoon, I'm off to work.

I think the name should be the same along with the same opening post.  The RIP Track should be posted immediately in the second post.  Whoever opens the thread at the beginning of the month is the one to do both posts.

Some newcomers may not know the definition of RIP Track.  RIP is a railroad term meaning Repair In Place. Large rail yards had designated tracks where rail cars could be repaired .

This would be a clever play on words because we also know RIP means "Rest in peace" to most people.

Perhaps we could place a gondola on the track and say "Gon but not forgotton".

So if that's what Ulrich envisions, I agree

We have already mentioned names to include. It is appropriate to include those in the general forum who were not regular participants in the Diner .

If someone wants to compile a list of names, that will be appreciated.

I am against removing Jeffrey's name from the heading--

my observation--

I called him friend---

I agree with Garry and Ulrich wholeheartedly!

Leave the name the same and add an RIP list post right after the opening post of each month's thread.  We can start with the names we have, and add more as they become known to us.

If someday down the track it becomes advantageous to change the name then so be it.  Chances are I will be listed on the RIP Track by then..... Whistling

Evenin' folks,

Janie, a tall glass of lemonade would be perfect right now....

This weekend the R&GV RR Museum is open to the public.  Just got an email from another member letting us know that Channel 8 WROC in Rochetser did a nice clip of the train we will be running on the 4PM news today.  It is up on the Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/News8WROC/videos/10155006082529386/ If you watch it, turn down the sound....  I don't know what they did for background but it is terrible.  One horn is the horn on the 80 tonner pulling the train, but the other stuff........  I will be found on the middle caboose, old Erie C-254 as Trainman/Car Host all weekend.

Tomorrow should be nice.  A high around 79°F and cloudy skies.  Sunday may be stressful with a high of 89°F and mostly sunny skies....  We keep lots of bottled water in stock for the crew and for emergencies with guests.  Last month when it was over 90° each caboose had a cooler filled with cold water for everyone.

Good Evening,

I agree that the name of the Diner should remain as is with the addition of a RIP track for those diners no longer with us.

I joined the forum largely because I wanted to participate in the Diner and it was largely reading Jeff's posts that inspired me to join in.  Sure do miss those no longer with us even though I only knew them from their posts here.

Had a nice day today. We went out for lunch at our favourite patio place. It was a spur of the moment thing so we wound up eating at nearly 2 so no dinner for me. It was a glorious afternoon in the sun ( under a large umbrella).

We are having to take in our bird feeders every night and putting them back our at 5:45 a.m. because a racoon decided that he liked bird seed and had knocked several down a few nights ago. We saw him at it so know it was a racoon. Makes for a short night even though I do go back to bed for a while but once up and about in the daylight it is hard to fall asleep again.

I'm getting the itch to buy another loco and am trying to resist. I really don't need one but I have always wanted a NYC Hudson and I found a BLI version at an online dealer in Canada for a good price. It is the Michigan Central version which is appropriate as NYC ran under MC on a line from Fort Erie to Detroit. They had a very large repair facility in St. Thomas, part of which is a museum I visited a few years ago.  Don't know if I can resist especially as I have recieved a small windfall that will just about cover the cost. I don't need another loco, but it is an iconic loco and just looks great. Do you think it would be out of place with CN? Their tracks were just about parallel in some places. I think I'm weakening. Help!!!

CN Charlie:

Racoons at the bird feeders. Been there, done that!AngryBang Head We bought a steel pole for the sunflower seed feeder and put it just far enough from the tree that the masked bandits can't reach it. Then we discovered that the chipmunks could shimmy up the pole with ease. A liberal application of Vic's Vapo Rub stopped that!LaughLaugh Now we have funny smelling chipmunks!

This afternoon the little birds were absent. That was because we had a sharp shinned hawk criuse through the yard several times. We were hoping he/she/it would take out one of the rabbits that have been devasting our gardens this year, but no luck.

As far as the new engine goes, I'm absolutely certain you will  hate yourself forever if you let it get away! Go for it!!!

 Evening Diners

 Flo, Beer please.

Was up and out the door today by 9:10 AM. Got fitted for my new shoes. They now scanning my feet with a scanner and not using the molds like they use to. The inserts will be 3-D printed! I was out of the clinic a hour and 15 minutes before work.

Work Front Got there a hour before opening. I thought I would have time to relax, eat my breakfest and maybe a little reading? Yes WRONG!!!!!! Bang Head I forgot JERRY had been there for two whole days! I KNOW WHO'S NAME I LIKE TO ADD TO THE RIP LIST!!!!!!!!! Bang Head

Took me the whole hour fixing stupid stuff and the Dunce may have cost me $120.00 in spiff money! That I will not stand for and I will force the issuie! I will not lose money because he is a Dunce ! OK, that is off my chest.

More down load problems. I am not talking computers stuff eaither. Things where download fine for a few days. I had been pleanty of spainch and bought some prunes. Today all most nothing. I know I should have about 25 grams of fiber a day, OK I said. Then I looked at the total fiber is a can of spainch, 2 grams? Green beans, 2 gram's again? OK, Prunes will be the answer right! Hum, 5 prunes 4 grams? Guess I will stop cutting the grass and start eating the stuff! Odd thing I have pretty much stop eating cheese, I thought that was the problem, guess not.

OK my vote is leave it Jefferys Dinner and I am all for a RIP Track or Fallen Flags list. Either would work for me and both fitting.

YGW Far my name on the dinner, well if it where to happen I rather it be Ken Round House Bar and Grill. Or maybe the Beer Train Bar. Note that is tougne in check. Far as the $3.00 B&O Engine I hope it's shell will fit a GP 30 N&W proto 2000 engine I have.

Yard Wars I now have a date to start putting the fence up, Aug 11th! I will need to change my days off, I want to be here to watch the work and make sure the post are 36 inch down and not just 24 inches. I trust very few people.

Good evening from Denare Beach, SK.  Our journey is complete for a while.  Drove through rain off and on all day.  Tonight the TV news from Saskatoon showed flooding in the Carrot River community.  Johnboy had earlier mention heavy rain in SE Saskatchewan which has spread to a wider area.

The whole world is in a termoil.  Hard to listen to the news while traveling with so much chaos.

Got a decent picture of my favorite CN station located in Dauphin, Manitoba.  Dauphin also has a five or six stall roundhouse that is still standing and has been converted to a city garage.  The turntable appears to have been dismantled as it looks like a parking lot is in the area where the turntable would have been.  I am old enough to remember when they still serviced steam locos at this location.  Saw the last steam on the northern branch in about 1958.

YGW, the daughter was chaperoning Boy Scout camp some where around Winchester so I asked her by text whether she had air conditioning in her tent.  She appreciated the humor as it was very warm there.  For sure we need no air conditioning tonight as it is in the 60s here at the lake.

FRRYKid - When you ordered teh engine did you know all of those parts were broken ?

No. I suspected that one of the rails might be bent a little from the picture but not broken as it came. I still haven't put feedback yet as I haven't figured out what to say. Part of that is I haven't had time to think about it fully yet. Another one of those things for tomorrow. The reason I went with this particular engine was that it appeared that the plastic handrails were intact. Given the age of these engines I was worried about the condition of the handrails. (The plastic handrails that came with the 30 shell were shot and I had to order a Smokey Valley set which I still haven't quite figured out.) Considering my 8 GP20s are all kitbashed, I figure I should have enough knowledge to fix the issues.

''hokey pokey ice cream'' Bear??LOL. Sounds ''hokey'' to Me.

Geeezzz Frank, would I put you crook?? Wink Hokey Pokey ice cream is a New Zealand icon!!! Hokey pokey is white sugar, golden syrup, melted, bought to the boil and then baking soda added, then cooled, and broken into chunks. The Poms call it honeycomb. With those ingredients you can see why I can only eat it here in the Diner.Sigh

Good day everyone,

I vote for keeping the name as Jeffrey's Trackside Diner.

It's a lovely looking Saturday morning here in Lancaster, and I'm planning to get some model railroading work done. Namely finish an X29 kit, I still have many to finish, and paint wheels. A lot of wheels.

I went to the Great Scale Model Train Show last weekend, and found three Intermountain Pfaudler milk cars for $52. I'll be looking forward to readying for them for my fleet.

Depending on the weather, and time before work, I may go swimming.

I'll have coffee and a donut, please.

Apparently, there is a consensus to include a post in memory of forum memebrs who passed away. Thanks for all who contributed their thoughts and opinions.

Ricky .... I meant to say your EL freight cars look very good.

Jim ... The CN station looks nice. I really like the old stations.

Bear ... Ice cream would be nice later today.

Happy Model Railroading.

Good morning all.  No ice cream for me.  I'm diabetic, remember?  Actually, I never was much of a dessert eater.  I'll still have a bit from time to time, although mostly I'm good about it and resist temptation.  The wife got me a box of chocolates for Valentine's Day.  I got even.  She had to eat them, and then she complained that she couldn't resist temptation.

Hot here, too.  The AC in my bedroom has been running nonstop for a few days, and it looks like there may be another week before nighttime temperatures are low enough to sleep without it.

I will vote "present" on the Diner naming issue.  I like all the options presented, so whatever makes the most people happy is fine with me.

I vote aye on Ulrich's latest suggestion.

I was wonder where these cabooses went.

I did not find that out, but did find Railfan Guides of the US online.  This is the Baltimore link but there are links for other states.  http://www.railfanguides.us/baltimore/map6/index.htm  He didn't make it easy to scroll from one pic to the next, but there are some interesting views and aerial shots.  I have not had time to look at the other states pages.

I've got to finish putting couplers on a couple cabooses and an engine, scrounge up some soil for the layout and start some scenicing.  It's been moderately hot but very humid.  Dew points in the low 70's

Hey all

Well it seems to me that the votes are as follows

For Jeffries Diner and or with RIP track is :

Garry,Ulrich, Alvie, JaBear, Ken, CN Charlie, Terry, Howmus, Herrinchoker,Ricky W, Richard, Anelob, Rich

Steve declined to vote ( owner of the building and not the resturant, it is the patrons vote though he is pleased that we named it Jeffries )

Mr. B - Voting present

Lion - Would like a picture of a lion in it  : )

Duke - Likes and has been following ( he goes way back ) the changes he suggested Flo/Clo - But I think he is okay with it as it is ?

It seems to me that the majority is it will stay as is with the addition of a RIP track of fallen patrons or their flags which Steven says will be difficult.

Now if we all agree we need to work out the details of the RIP track , Should it be on the same page ? Seperate page ? Seperate post ? Or some other method ?

Henry - Nice shot of teh cabooses. Why are there all different ? Is that a muesuem ?

JaBear - What are "Poms" ?

Ken - Check your PMs

CN Charlie - Buy it is my suggestion.

Well folks gotta run. TTYL

IMHO the RIP track should probably be the second post after the name, info etc. and then the location for the month comes third.

Hobby front: I was a little surprised this morning. When I went for breakfast this morning (tried a new coffee shop this morning) I found a surprise. The parts I ordered for the 45 were here already. (I wasn't expecting those til Monday.) Kind of interesting that a package from Washington State and one from PA get to me the same day, especially when the WA packaged was ordered a day before. I'm still planning to work on the 30 today however.

I’ve been reading in the paper that BNSF wants to build a yard near the Long Beach port, one of the busiest ports in the world. Containers will only have to go a short distance from the port to the trains, now there trucked down the freeway I forget I think over 10 miles causing a lot of truck traffic, smog, congestion, wear and tear on the freeway. The government ignores this.

For 10 years BNSF has paid millions for all kinds of studies of every sort, environmental impact reports etc. The government here hates business and continues to not allow the yard.

This is a industrial area, there are a few houses across the freeway, still the government says no.

7 spell checks in this. I ought to write down how to spell government and business as I always misspell them.

Dennis, I recall the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach were in the financial news as they were doubling capacities in the years following Bill Clinton's China Trade Agreement (2000). I also recall, the government did work with BNSF and UP to build a rail corridor from the ports to the rail yards several miles inland. So I wonder why the containiers would be trucked now. Perhaps the proposed rail yard at Long Beach you mentioned will relieve congestion at the inland rail yard, but I do not know. .... Regarding environmental impact studies, they seemed like a total waste of money when I dealt with one many years ago. I can imagine they are now even worse. ... Lately, I don't follow the financial news quite as much as I used to do..

Just stopped in on my way from Vancouver (BC) and heard Dave mention chipmunks and bird feeders. Try putting a pie plate around the pole, like an inverted cone. They can shimmy up all they want but can't get around the lip. Dave

Evening Diners,

Since Mr. B doesn't what his ice cream I'll take it. I accidentally put the italic font but that's okay. It looks alright while I'm typing right now.

A note for Micro-Trains, please put a instruction diagram to put together a coach car kit. I put my business car together within an hour. I had problems with the glass, not realizing it's upside down and reverse to fit the door and observation glass.

After the pain of putting it together, I wish I have bought the NYC Baggage-Mail car to make my happy not putting that car together. Oh well.

What font size is correct for heavyweight coaches? I was going to put gold strips across the windows, but I realized wouldn't have room to place the name on either side. It will a few years before it gets to carry decorations.

Just stopped in on my way from Vancouver (BC) and heard Dave mention chipmunks and bird feeders.

I just stopped feeding the local birds after I found that what I was really doing was luring the songbirds to my lawn to feed the nieghborhood cats!

Nice, enjoyable day out at the museum today.  Ticket count was a bit less than we had hoped for but since we were also somewhat short handed it turned out OK...  Weather was pleasant and we had some very impressed and happy visitors.

Flo, Beer please and just shoot me please.

Yep been one of those days! Was busy but could not sell a $10.00 bill for $5.00 dollars! Had a  customer complain to the home offices that I was in a bad mood, and they where right. While I was dealing with them (deal where they did work for Nancy so they get a $275.00 discount) so while I was talking with them I had a call from a Jerry coustomer that did not get all the iteams they thought came with the Bunkbed they bought. Clearly shows that the underbed drawer's are a option and not part of the set. But why would the Dunce know that!  He has only been here for 9 months! Just a babe in the woods. Whistling

YGW Rread the PM and that is fine. I sent the snail mail Thursday. I am not in a hurry for the coal cars. After all I made you wait for somtime.
