Afternoon folks,

Chloe, just a glass of Cherrybundy Lite please...

PM, I like that idea as well!  Somebody needs to draw up of list of our members who have gone to the great "Layout in the Sky".

I'm taking a cleaning break at lunchtime here in the Finger Lakes Region.  The Driveway seal place arrived mid morning and finished the job.  I also sent out an email to the folks that may be here for the meeting tonight to not even think of parking their cars/trucks/whatevers in that driveway.....   It should be OK to walk one by 6:00PM though.  Debating whether top bake cookies for them or just run to the store and get some dtore bought stuff.  Not sure I want to run the oven when it is over 90°F outside.  The air conditioner is keeping it a nice 74°F in here.

Prayers for all those in need of them!!!

Could I get some French Toast (with powered sugar of course), syrup, a few sausage links and some OJ this morning, Ms. Flo. Thank you.

PM Railfan

( Might I suggest for rememberences of fallen friends that no diner renaming, or menu juggling be done. Yet, under the title banner that opens each months thread, how about a list of names instead? Nothing grandios.

Maybe give it a subheading of "'RIP' Track", and a nice little railroaders proverb accompanying it. Should one of us succomb to the end of life as we know it... no fuss, no muss..... just add the name to the list. )

With any luck, it will remain a short list.

Douglas

I would also vote for that idea as well.

Any news on the problem you had the other day ?

YGW - you really don´t want to know what the docs said bout my check-up results! Nor do I! I decided to ignore all of that medical talk and continue life as it is. OK, I have to pay a price for putting 90 years of life into 60 calendar years, but so what? The damage is done and it won´t change a thing if I wallow in self-pity.

Mors certa, hora incerta - words of wisdom from the old Roman folks (death is certain, the hour not).

I spent a couple of hours working on the detail of the freight cars. I added/corrected underbody detail, added more detail to the bodies and improved the wheels and axle bearings.

My virtual roster of Marklin stock now looks like this:

Not that you can really see all that detail, but it kept me busy and out of mischief for a while.

Of course, the "new cars" had to be put on the tracks of my layout, you know, the one I am going to build when I grow up and get rich, but not before!

Talking of food, we had spicy turkey shish kebab and Petra´s award winning potato salad for dinner - yummy! I ate too much of it!

Hi Gang,

Just a short one here as I have much to do.

Tipton Bill,  It is indeed great to see you back here,  we lost Jeff about the same time that you disappeared from the Diner. To me it never felt quite right after that.

Does that Big Hot Coffee Pot of yours still work ?  We sure could use it here in the mornings / or anytime.    Welcome back......Welcome

Ulrich,  Sure sorry to hear you didn't get better news from the Sawbones. But glad to see you are living life the best you can right now. Although I am having trouble keeping up with your changes in the model railroad world. I wish you the best good Buddy.

Good wishes and prayers for all in need, especially Ulrich, YGW's Family & SIL and Ken's Family especially his daughter Sharon.

IdeaIdeaIdeaIdeaIdea    BTW. For the Diner I do prefer the RIP Track idea. (* Rest in Peace *)      I think it is the best idea.  IdeaIdeaIdeaIdeaIdea

Will try to check back in later.

 Afternoon Dinners

 Flo, Beer please.

Dang, I feel good today for a change! Got my running done and felt like working on the back 40. Got my fences painted deluded (not sure that is the right word) so I could use my Harbor Freight Air-Less Spayer. Went to loaded the spayer, would not work like the last one! Bang Head Then I finally foud the hole to oil (booklet it came with sucks) and then it worked fine! Yes Got the outside facing boards done and surfaces that will be aginst the post. I will paint my side when they are up. With some luck that will be Thursday.

Fence Removal Just like I thought, was harder than I thought. Had to remove 3 tree stumbs (small only 3") but hard to get to. Ran into more vines, but not wild grape vines. Got 16 foot and one post removed. I would have got the other 16 foot out but the weather turned ulgy. LightningLightningLightningLightningLightningLightningLightningLightningLightningLightningLightningLightningLightningLightningLightningLightning

It is a shame, I still felt like working. Got the construction fence up and was ready to BBQ. Dinner I had the grill lite then the Tornado Waring went off. I turned off the grill and hunker down. Right now it seems like the worst is over.

Bill Is Tipon just 5 miles away? Well Carmel is a lot bigger now that when I grew up. Bill you know how people from Ind make fun of people from KY? (not Gary he is top notch) Yes

Funny story. When I first mover out here I did not know the name Hoosier was a Derogatory Name. I had just been promted and was meeting with one of my managers. My Cadillac was sitting in the parking lot, and the plates said The Hoosier State. I was sitting in the manger offices talking with him when the Asnt Manger stuck is head in the door and asked "Who Hoosier Car is that in the parking lot?"

Manger looked sick and started to sink under his desk. Said "That Mr Greenwell Car, he is the new Area Supvesior." Greg turned white which is hard to do being a black man and he slunk away. I was sitting there tolally clue less what was going on!

 Mors certa, hora incerta

Ulrich that is a good qoute.

"Jeffrey´s Trackside Diner" Personally I think we should leave it as Jeffrey's Diner. Jeff was the hightst poster on the site and pretty much kept the dinner going. I do like the idea of the RIP Track.

 Well, later.

Greetings diners from Albert Lea, MN where it is a comfortable 70 degrees tonight.  Drove in very hard rain for about a half hour east of Des Moines.  Stopped to visit my step-sister and her husband.  My step mother turns 93 next week but sadly she does not recognize us.  Sever demention is a horrible disease.

Like the idea of honoring departed members of the diner with the monthly diner move and agree with Ken about keeping it as Jeffery's Diner.

The new dog has turned out to be a really good traveler.  She is content to stay in the back seat with the new seatbelt dog harness.  Much safer way for her and us to travel.

Good night to all.

Although I am having trouble keeping up with your changes in the model railroad world.

Johnboy - it´s just a plan that will never come true. All I can do right now is virtual model railroading - the dreaming and the planning, but not the building.

I now and then run a train over my Swiss layout - until it´s being sold, maybe coming Fall.

Hello Railfans!

Top of the evening to everyone (or morning as your case may be). Flo - wink wink! And if Ken is feeling that good..... get him another Beer  or four.

Ulrich - That was a stumper. Renaming the diner to reflect no certain name. I pondered it good and proper and have decided I think to say "aye". I think it is a good idea. My 'nay' side was thinking of all yall went through to change it last time.

With no certain name on the signboard, the diner can be a diner - anywhere and at any time, for ANYONE. Which is pretty much how we do it anyways by choosing a new place each month. Without a certain name I think it adds mystique to the place, and commonality.

O. Winston Link's artwork comes to mind when I say.... "The Trackside Diner" plainly. Then Clark gable walks in. Alfred Hitchcock narrates todays posts.

FLO! - What did you put in my pepsi?!

So for my vote in this I would say lets change the name one last time and for all time to just "The Trackside Diner". Lets state the introduction clarifying the rules and intent of the place. Then solemnly list in memorium our fallen friends. Lastly, it should be noted the place of our Diners residence for the month.

I think that meets all the rules our providers ask of us, gives clear definition of the place, and pays respect to those who have figuratively.... broken bread here with us (Diner - being a place to eat and talk) but walk amongst us no more.

Back to Ulrichs idea here, another reason I agree is I think it would be appropriate to list Elliot first, then Jeffrey. And I would also like to add that with either a gold star, or in small type be placed a special notation next to those two names.

Thus, not by naming an establishment with their names, we give our special tribute to them in this manner instead. To recieve a star or notation, I would think you must participate here at a level higher than normal. Im sure all of you who knew Elliot and Jeffrey well would state that these two met this criteria. Atleast that is what Ive heard from all of you.

The hobby is about contribution (and FUN!). Without it, it dissolves. Those who make the effort, get the star. Yeah, I know, it aint a pink Cadillac, or gold watch, we are limited to what we can do.... here... in a text based forum (that happens to look an aweful lot like a traveling 85' Dining car).

Howmus has suggested above that a list be made of those we would like to place in memorium. I think it is prudent this should fall on one or two of our most ardent conributers. Those with extensive time here who would know the names  of those who have passed that some of us never met. That is if it is agreed to go with the new format i have suggested here, of course.

So if there was a tally to come of this topic, heres where I stand:

Rename: Yes, to "The Trackside Diner" permanantly.

Memorium List: Yes

Henry - Your right about having such a meal. I will have to admit to you im kinda a finatic about this fad we call eating. I will have to ask you to turn your head for a few minutes. Im going to have to try a Barry Burger atleast once. Though Id appecriate it if someone could explain to me in detail what exactly a Barry Burger consists of. And, is it too big to have room left over for a piece of cake for dessert?

Will I have to widen the isles of my layout (if I had one) after having such a meal? Will it add another caboose... to my caboose?  Thats still prototypical ya know!

Thanks folks for hearing me out.

Douglas - you put my thoughts into words! That´s exactly what I intended!

I find it more and more difficult these days to "think in English" and the number of typographical errors is increasing by the square. The day will come when I will answer to a post in "Deutsch".

Good Morning!

I will try my best to make it a good morning. The night was bad, being haunted by a series of nightmares kept me awake, with my heart racing the Capetown Races. Now I have an ugly headache which hopefully will go away during the day.

Hot today in DC.  Heat index of 100 to 105F.  The conditions at IAD will probably be 5 - 10F hotter than that.  Have 4 aircraft winging there way to these hot conditions (adds to the usual problems).

Ulrich - Agree with you.  Live each day as it comes.

YGW - will call you after work today.

All the best.

Good morning everybody.

Let's keep talking about ways to include Diners who have passed awy. The RIP Track is a good idea. ... Hopefull we can firm up things.

I recall Ed Murphy used to send fresh oranges to the Diner from his Mexican home. Jerry in IL always said "Have a good one." Of course, there are Jeff and Barry.  I miss those guys.

Though I agree it would seem more fair to treat all our "fallen flag" friends equally by not honoring any particular one in the name of the Diner, I think calling it simply "The Trackside Diner" doesn't have the same friendly, inviting feeling as when it has a person's name in front of it. So I'd suggest naming it for a fictional person... and you all know him well... Vinnie's Trackside Diner. It IS his joint, after all.

What, you don't think Vinnie can be "friendly" and "inviting?" Then YOU go tell him that to his face... Angry

Garry - IIRC, we have lost 3 friends in the past two years, with Ed passing away before 2014.

If that´s correct, we now have as "fallen flags"

  • Ed Murphy
  • Jeffrey "Running Bear" Wimberley
  • Jerry Cox and
  • Barry Arnold

What about Elliot, the "founder" of this place?

Steven, while a name makes it more personal, we would have to give an explanation as to the origin of the name. Only "insiders" know who Cuz´ Vinnie is.

Well, I don´t know - name or no name, that´s the question. I guess I´ll follow majority vote.

Btw, there is a real place called Jeff´s Trackside Diner on Ridge Street in Rome, NY.

I've only been around since Dec or Jan and I didn't think I had a dog in the hunt to name the diner.  Maybe someone could enlighten me on Eliot.

At any rate, I don't see anything wrong with changing the name from time to time to honor someone we think is special.  We all have the opportunity to be special but few of us succeed in all aspects of our life. That others have no trouble detecting that quality on a forum like this is remarkable.

If there is anyone lurking from Generation Snowflake, sorry.... not everyone gets a gold star.

The diners that follow us will have peers that they consider special.  They won't know any of us.  Let them figure out who to honor.

Mornin' Everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of blueberry buckwheat pancakes (Birkett mills mix please), real NYS Maple Syrup, a couple sausage links, and a30 cup urn of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast Coffee to keep my R&GV RR Mug filled for the rest of thye morning please.

I like the idea of deciding on a name that will will stay forever (or at least until somebody decides to change it again) for the diner and honoring those who were major contributers by listing them on the first post every month.  I'm not in favor of giving gold stars or other special recognition to some people and not others.  We are all diners in here and at some time or other have helped someone in the hobby...  I would suggest everyone gets listed in order of when they passed on to the great roundtable in the sky, so to speak.  I like "Vinnie's Trackside Diner" or something like that.  I also want to see us keep the history of the diner and it's patrons as much as possible.  Part of the fun is the long standing history of this place.  The NMRA lists all members that have ever gotten MMR in the Achievment Program pages on their website.  You don't get dropped because nobody remembers you anymore........  BTW, MMR #2 Ed Van Leer is from my division.  He has been gone for years, but his exceptional scratch built locomotives and cars are on display at the New York Museum of Transportation in West Henrietta, NY.  The living person who has had his MMR the longest is also one of my members.  Harold W. Russell Jr.  I think it is good to promote our history and those who have gone before us!

The Committee meeting went well last night except for the fact that our committee chair turned in her resignation at the end of this year....  They really have no one on the committee who can do the job at this point so the two Commissioners will have to do some major behiond the scenes work to get someone on board who might be able to take that over.  Blackie came over to meet everyone (unusual for him).  He usually goes and hides while Manét makes the rounds.  All of a sudden the lady who is the secretary jumps and looks down at the floor to see Blackie rubing against her leg...  Then she starts to laugh and says he just licked my leg!  I picked him up and held him so he could check out everyone sitting around the table....  These two cats are unique to say the least.....

Currently 84°F outside under mostly cloudy skies.  I didn't get a chance to water the garden last night and din't worry about it as the forecast was calling for a couple hours of thunderstorms for today with a good amount of rain predicted.  Get up this morning, only a 20% chance of rain...  Storms will come across the area, make a major split completely missing Geneva, then reform over by Syracuse, NY.  We are in a major drought at the moment.....

Have a great day out there!

While I am for "The Trackside Diner", Steve makes a VERY good point here. In looking back over the open pages of this thread (prior months).... we dont give any real acknowledgement to our "owners" of the Diner.

Cousin Vinnie may have the rep as a bouncer, referee, attitude checker but, it is only fair, fitting, and responsible of us to atleast name our lessors. After all, the title of deed to this place says "Kalmbach".

It is a name known world wide, and respected greatly among our brotherhood. Just like Lionel, or Walthers. All old timers, all lifelong contributers, all having very much to do with our hobby. That which brings us all here. Definately a gold star name.

In lieu of Steves response, I have no problem changing my vote from "The Trackside Diner" to a title befitting naming the place with something Kalmbach in the title.

Some acknowledgement must be made here IMO other than a warning about "Cousin Vinnie".

And that horse wasn't even their idea. Farrari had admired Italian ace, Francesco Barraca, during World War One. After the war he asked the ace's widow if she would permit him to use the prancing horse design, that Barraca had painted on all of his planes, for the new  car company he was starting. She said yes, of course and the rest, as they say, is history.

Hi gang!

Great news! My son has bought a house!! Financing was approved yesterday. He will be moving out in mid September.

I am glad to see him out on his own. In today's Ontario real estate market I think he and his girlfriend have done well to be moving into a nice house at the ages of 26.

What that means for me is that the garage is now entirely mine!!!! The layout building can begin! I have to assemble some storage cupboards to clean up the space that won't be occupied by the layout, and we are going to have an 8' x 10' garden shed installed so the big stuff like snow tires, snow blower, lawnmower, garden tools etc. can be moved out of the garage.

The only stumbling block right now is my back. I have had a few problems over the years with my lower back including arthritis and a nasty strep infection in my vertebra that resulted in a spinal fusion. The result is that my back aches constantly to the point now where walking or standing is quite unpleasant. Over the counter pain killers are not very effective, and it's not a good idea to be popping them everyday anyhow. I'm not sure how much of a limiting factor that will be in building the layout.

However, yesterday I was discussing the problem with my doctor and he suggested that I was a candidate for medical marijuana to treat the pain. Now don't go nuts, I'm not looking to become a stoner! The specific formula that he is recommending does not contain THC which is the stuff that gives you a high. The chemical that I would be using is commonly called CBD (there are a variety of other substances that can be involved). It is commercially extracted from the marijuana plant so I won't be going around with a pocket full of flower heads! The chemical is administered as a vapour. No 'reefer madness'! People who are on it can function normally, including going to work, and the pain is significantly reduced.

I think I am going to give it a try. Right now things like cutting the lawn or taking the garbage out, or even preparing a meal leave me in significant pain, even if I have taken pain meds. The pain is severely cramping our lifestyle and getting things done around the house is a challenge. If there is a solution, why not try it?

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Afternoon all.

Flo, a slice of that chocolate cake, and a glass of milk please. Thanks!

Steve - I'm not sure why anyone would say Vinnie isn't friendly.... Even when he is "laying down the law", it's only his job. We "mind our P's and Q's", he don't have to be "the mean one" and is really a nice guy. I like the idea of Vinnie's Trackside Diner. It does make it a little more personal than just The diner....

Ken - I know how the whole asthma thing feels, so I understand what you mean when you say sometimes it is hard enough just to breathe, let alone do anything else. Not being able to move air is scary, both for that person and their friends and family! (One former supervisor (now friend) would base it on how I was acting, if I cracked jokes, she wasn't worried. If I said, hey, little help here, she got concerned. If I said to "watch me like a hawk", that was code for "not good" between us, and that was when she knew it was bad.) My current meds seem to be doing the trick, as are a few other tricks I have found. (I refuse to endorse anything, as each person is different, sometimes one thing will work for you, not me, or vis-a-versa. Best to go over options with your own physician, and find what is right for you.) Hope that your daughters surgery goes well, and that all is once again normal. (No, not the washing machine setting, but the everyday normal!)

Weather - Hot. Still humid as well. Dreary overcast day, with good chance of strong storms later today. Had some r**n last night, with some Lightning, but nothing major. We did get a severe Lightning warning, but, at least at my place, nothing at all bad.

W**k - Had a good day yesterday on accounts, getting more yesterday than I had all month prior! Did 2700 in sales myself, as we were relatively busy yesterday. Also got more contest numbers, so my month end bonus will now at least be double digits, but still much smaller than last month. We still have no "official" store manager, so we are still going over on payroll every week, just to keep things close to normal, and not get too far behind.

Hobby - I had not done any pics of the kits, but now that I was asked, I will take some shots, and that will also show my truck/wheelset coloring. (Yes, opening that to some critique, as I like it, but not sure how to get it just a little better.... Maybe someone will have a idea...) Look for these a little later on everyone.

Flo, that cake and glass of milk hit the spot, Thanks! Give my compliments to the baker, please.

Hope all have a good day!

However, yesterday I was discussing the problem with my doctor and he suggested that I was a candidate for medical marijuana to treat the pain.

Why not try it,  if it makes you happy ... =))

Sorry, I didn´t mean to be nasty, I just couldn´t resist it!

I am suffering from a similar issue - standing up for more than 5 minutes will make whine with pain.

Ulrich:

I didn't think your comment was nasty. In fact I got a kick out of it. I'm sure a lot of people will have humerous things to say about it. The fact is, if it stops the pain then I will be happy!! (Just not rolling on the floorSmile, Wink & Grin).

Medical marijuana and its derivatives are a far cry from the dope that is on the street these days. We went through a terrible time with our son when he was using street dope. It caused some major mental issues. Fortunately he was able to see the light before it did any permanent damage. Our family doctor was not so lucky. One of his sons ended up as a permanent resident of Ontario Shores which is the mental hospital where the worst cases go. The damage is apparently permanent.

I have started to use a cane when I walk or if I have to stand for any length of time. It helps a lot.

That would earn us a lifetime´s trouble with the legal department of Ferrari - the "cavallo rampante" is a protected trademark / phrase...

You definitively have to consider your health in designing the layout! How about a modular design with each module (or segment) about 2 by 4 in size? You can comfortably do all the "back-breaking" work at your desk, while being seated.

Well, I am a bachelor for the next few days. Mrs. ROR is knocking off a bucket-list item--whitewater rafting in the Grand Canyon. I opted not to go as I am just a tad afraid of water. Our son-in-law (I was going to use SIL, but how does one distinguish between son-in-law and sister-in-law) works for a outfitting company and so the cost is very reasonable. My daughter, SIL (works in context) and his parents are all going. Mrs. ROR gets home Sunday evening and I leave for Raleigh Sunday morning so we will be separated for eight days. Sad

Weather in Phoenix--hot. Summer hot. High of 113F. Stay-in-the-house hot. Unfortunately I do need to leave for a piano lesson, and I need to get my car smog checked.

And for what it is worth, I vote for a "non-aligned" name for the diner. We could call it "Steven's Trackside Diner," named after John Stevens, the constructor of the first U.S. steam locomotive. It would also be a tongue-in-cheek reference to Vinnie's alter-ego.
