Good Morning!
Today promises to become a dull day - at least in terms of our weather. Time to w*rk on the layout! I hope to cover some more ground in the true meaning of it, putting more pink stuff down to get rid of this 2-dimensional look of my Plywood Central RR, turning it into the Swiss Alps
Zoe, it´s Sunday, so I´ll go for my usual big Sunday breakfast! You know, bacon & eggs, buttered toast - what? You won´t be serving my order? Why? Well, OK, I´ll have that diet breakfast, then. An ounce of wholegrain muesli with a cup of skimmed milk. Will coffee be OK? Thank you!
Have a great Sunday!
P.S. YGW - thaks for the update on Kelly. She remains in our
Good Evening
Welb...having Lucy up here all cuddled up between my arms again. Had a rather productive day with plans and such around me here.
Going back down to 5F again tonight.
Garry: Yep, and around your part are a lot of hills to worry about. A friend of ours has about 40" where they live.
Now, that I think of it....Chloe? I'll have the 64oz prime rib rack with the 10lb bucket of poutine and 4 Strawberry pies...and a coffee as well please.

Heartland Division CB&QRay ... The joke about winter in the South would be funny if the South only had a small amount of snow. The real hazard is the ice in the South combined with hilly roads. , however. The photo of the exit ramp in AL shows it was badly iced up. Even tractor trailers have problems with that stuff.
Absolutely! My son's and I got "Snowed" in in Lumberton, NC going to Florida to visit My sister and her family over Christmas back in 1989 or 90. Talk about everything stopping. We saw a police car do a 360 and smash into a stopped car at a stoplight... (Sheet of ice and the policeman didn't know how to drive on it.) Big problem is the lack of the equipment to clear the streets properly. Not much salt and no real way to spred it. There was a huge Tractor Trailer stuck half way up the ramp on ice... When we left the following morning there was a tow truck with a winch inching the Semi up the hill.... No doubt about the seriousness of the weather when you folks get snow and Ice.... Frankly I would rather drive in snow here in the North than the snowy Ice down there! (Drive on snow and you make ice....). Just thought the photos were funny! BTW, Tonight I cooked a hamburg on the grill for supper in my heavy carhart and a knit hat with my winter gloves on my hands. We do that around here all the time this time of year.
This was me a few years back after being outside running the snowblower.....
Just got off the phone with my sister... She is supposed to take a flight to Korea out of Newark, NJ early Monday morning...... She is not happy at the moment. Most likely they will have the airport up and running on time by then.
Have a good one out there!

We'll get there sooner or later!
Uncle_Bob, my A1C was up at 9 something. I hadn't had a physical for a couple of years and I was feeling very good, so the diagnosis was based on numbers, not symptoms. The Metformin got it down around 6 but left me feeling terrible. Glyburide + lots of exercise actually got it under 6.
My doctor said he would have been happy with anything below 7 for "managed diabetes," so he's very happy with me. I'm not a dessert eater or a sugar fiend, but I just eat a reasonable diet, not particularly depriving myself of anything I like. I still tell people I'd rather have 20 years of steak and beer than 25 years of brown rice and vitamin water.
I found that I had a mid-morning low point when I took the Glyburide as directed when I got up. This would have interfered with skiing, so I asked the doctor if I could take it at bedtime. He said that was fine, and a quick Google search on the topic also indicated no issues, so I switched to taking it at night and I find that the mid-morning blahs have gone away.

Good evening ...
YGW ... If you are plowing snow, I think you have your work cut out for you. ... Thanks for updating your SIL.... Is she able to communicate okay with her family? You did not say what was affected by the brain injuries.

Galaxy ... Glad you are moved and hope your health improves. Hopefully, you can soon do some model railroading in the nice sized basement at the new place.
Duke ... Good to see you here. Your wire connections look like good work.
The snow stopped here last night, and today it was sunny and cold. Our road has been plowed, and we should have no big problems because of this storm. It was a lot worse east of here. I saw on national news hundreds of people were stuck in their vehicles overnight on I-75 near Lexington, KY because of the big winter storm. .... and it was much worse farther east.

Reading what Ray and G have said, I have to ask, what's low or high blood sugar? My last blood test had it at 120, at my last actual office visit it was 112, but a dietician says I'm a raging diabetic because my A1C is 6.2, down from 6.5 over 6 months. My previous GP was an incompetent quack, but he said all my numbers were great except my weight. So, the dietician gave me a blood meter. My readings have varied from 83 to 147. I don't know what to think. I don't want to screw up my body chemistry, but I also don't want to literally kill myself, so I've been a good boy and taken my Glyburide (since Metformin disagrees with me). Still, I just don't know if I buy this stuff.
Evenin' folks!Janie, I could use a cup of decaf right now, please...
Galaxy, glad you folks were able to get a lot moved today! Good luck getting everything out tomorrow. How soon after a meal are you checking your blood sugar? I check mine in the morning when I get up, and right before I go to bed at night, at least 2 hours after the last meal..... I adjust my diet if it gets too high.... Do not have a problem with too low at this point in time. I am on a combination of Januvia and Metformin and have tolerated it well. The Januvia both lowers blood sugar but also stops workimng when the blood sugar starts to get low.
I got some work done on the last new addition to my layout today. This will be a long triangular addition to the yard area of the new room section. I hope to have room to create "Benham's Elevator" on there. Will have to do some measuring and finigling to make it fit I think. The original building is in Canadaigua and There was an article in MR not too long ago with the blueprints for the building by Harold Russell. I was the one who called his attention to the building and he said he would draw it for me. I have two copies in HO of his drawings here. I helped him take photos of it and measure it several years back. I was supposed to have it built back then so the final model could go with the article... Haven't gotten to t yet..... I hope to get it at least started within the year.
By early next week i should have the materials in hand to finish the Girder Bridge project. Then I will work on the scenery in that location followed by scenery work at the end of the line where the return loop is. There will be a small rural town there with a couple rail served businesses. Mostly will be craftsman Kits over there.
Hope everyone is safe and warm out there....
Well, except for probably one more smaller load, us three invalid/disabled people got hte stuff moved WITHOUT THE ABLE-BODIED. Tomorrow we do the rest and final load.
We discovered the trailer pipes froze at 60F the furnace was set at, we certainly won't miss that!
The trailer looks so dejected, but they will ahul it away soon enough. It has bad energy over there.
Metformin: I will give it a shot, but my sugar is still high {214 after lunch} but he DR is concerend about it being too low. Understandable. I will find out how I tolerate it. I remember Mr. B saying it didnt set well wiht him.
well, I need to rest now. big day today. and more to come tomorrow.

Good Afternoon.
We got to 14f out here....but we had sun and not a cloud in the sky here...ahhh, but we will be paying for it...after tomorrow's little bits of sun we will have about 10 days+/_ of dull and dribblebits....
Welm, I had a fairly quiet time in my trainroom...I have to replan the plan that I thought I had as a plan. But, of course, it ain't working out that way. So, the afternoon down there had some words go out into the air...
Tonight I will be in the corner booth with the padded wall and redo that so-called plan a mite....
I have four of these under the layout. Top row are my jumpers and bottom row goes to track. It is a seperate board so I can pull it out if needed.

A little early to go to bed, but I´ll be slowly calling it a day! Started to put the pink foam down to form the scenery base. I made good progress. The electric hot knife I bought some time ago made cutting the foam really easy and less messy than using a regular hobby knife. OK, there are fumes to be considered but they were not as bad as I feared them to be. No pictures yet, as today´s achievement is not presentable at all.
Here is a little heartwarming story I found on the Web:
Enjoy!
I am getting ready to run the evening train now - CU all tomorrow!
I had to laugh, Ray. Last winter I took this picture of my own grill:
Yes, the snow was literally up to the level of the grill surface itself, and I had to brush over a foot of it off the top. But it was worth it for a nice rib-eye steak.
Galaxy, I was on Metformin for a while. It's fine for most people, but I did not tolerate it well at all. It made me very tired and seemed to be robbing my brain of energy, too, as I felt kind of dazed and confused and not sharp at all. I read about it online (as I always do about any medications I'm taking) and they said it takes a long time to get used to. I tried to find something quantitative (days? weeks? months?) but the only actual answer anyone gave was "forever."
Anyway, after 6 months I had great hemoglobin A1C numbers, but I told my doctor I felt like dung and he switched me to Glyburide. I tolerate that much better, I've lost weight and I'm getting a lot more exercise.
yougottawantaNice photo is that near you ?
It´s the view from our living room windows...
yougottawantaDo not understand terminal strips and finish nail. Can you explain a bit more detail ?
One picture is worth.....
There are 3 of them in the photo. Lots of wires going to them....LOL Two of them are on the tortoise assemblies, and one in the middle. The Terminal strip allows me to connect several short riuns to the maion bus or to the DC bus for operating the Torti and lighting, etc. I have used about a hundred so far on the layout... Before I had any $$$ to buy the Terminal strips I used to make a home made assemby to do the same thing using Finishing Nails through a strip of wood. On one side I would solder a wire across the nails that I wanted to have the same polarity. Then add one set of live wires on the other side. I could then put in wire drops to track, etc and solder them to the proper finishing nails for the proper polarity. I'll see if I can find a photo of one.
Hello all from snowy VA. We are up to 20+/- inches of snow with final amount expected to be 30 to 36". Have some drifts at least 4' deep. Amazingly we have not lost power yet. Typically we blink or the wind blows the wrong way and we loose power.
BO Cyl. 5 degrees. I tell you I think living with temps that low would be unbearable.
Henry - snow eggs ? Guess that was laid by a Canadian goose !
Galaxy - you know they name streets after friends like that that you help and then they do not return the favor.... "One Way " had a few one wayfriends .
Ulrich - HELLO !!!!! SO glad you are back !!! Nice photo is that near you ?
Howmus eBay, so sorry it is so frustrating dealing with internet companies when things go south. Do not understand terminal strips and finish nail. Can you explain a bit more detail ?
Garry hello how are things in your neck of the woods ?
Jim good for you helping others !
Richard glad you had some time to pop back in. Love seeing you here.
DER - nice job it is looking better all of the time. I would recommend a separate program track. I read an MRR article that gave multiple reason some years ago. Don't remember the reasons.

Mornin' everyone!
Zoe, I'll have a short stack of buttermilk pancakes, Pure NYS maple Surup, a couple sausage, and a pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Roast Coffee to start my day. Thank you Ma'am!
Hope all of you in the path of Jonas are safe and warm...
BC, you are a bit colder up North of the Lake than here in the Finger Lakes this morning. It is currently 19°F outside with a predicted high of 26°F sometime, maybe... They are calling today "Fair" here. Maybe "Fair to Middlin'" The symbol shows the sun peaking through the cloud cover.... Lets just say right here I can't find any shadows out there.... LOL
Would be nice if the sun would come out and clear the sn*w off the solar panels so they could make some electricity today. They started to clear yesterday, but still had about half the panels still covered. Once the sun comes out they will clear off rather quickly as the panels generate heat as well as electricity.
I sent out an email to 21 of my NMRA members asking for a day/evening when we could come to visit and get their signature... That was two days ago. I have heard back form one person who is presently way down South on Business, and one who lives Just South of the city... I dunno! Nothing seems to be going right around here so far this year! I did hear back from the company I purchased the walls from. He just mailed them out to me with an appology. He got completely swamped with some other things. I should have them here first of the week.
This I found over across the street... Figured you folks might enjoy it.
Have a good one, stay warm and safe wherever you are!
Good morning
We have sun out here!! And lots of it!! Mind you, the current temperature is 5F feeling like -4 out.
Going to be a quiet weekend up here for once...no runnin' 'roun' doin' stuff and doin' the gotta buys and such. So I will enjoy my traintime a lot now...
Ulrich: Good to see you here!! And SCARM does a lot better with that plan...like how it is shaping up.
BigDaddySCARM, not as steep a learning curve as XTrckCAD, the later I haven't figured out. SCARM has better teaching videos, but I never figured out how to add buildings, which is too bad because I think I am planning too much track and not enough space.
Yup, there is a certain danger to have too much track and not enough space for structures or scenery. I always crinch when I see track planned to the very edge of the benchwork, leaving no room for some kind of a "vertical transition" between the track and the backdrop.
To make buildings in SCARM, you basically draw a rectangle in the 2D mode, using the"figures" function (scroll down on the track system library) and then add position and height in the settings for this object. Click on the object and you can add a roof to it. IIRC, there is also a video tutorial on how to design structures.
I have probably spend well over 200 hours on my plan, but it was a learning by doing affair.
Galaxy, sorry about your 'friends'
Impossible to know how much snow is out there because of the drifing, this picture makes it look worse than it is.
That's my Big Green Egg under there. 6 more hours of wind and snow forecast, so far no freezing rain or sleet.

Well, today was supposed to be a moving day.
The train nut friend has been dealing wiht a change of meds, and the other day when arising, he got dizzy, fell nad hit his head. But he is here today.
Spouse had to work both jobs today, but the special needs client canceled. SO iis free after noonthirty. I am hanging in there. Is still wiht a cold too.
Now here comes the rub: two healthy, able bodied friends WERE to help, but thought it "crazy they were the only two able bodied people to move, time to reschedule"....now we are running out of month and may have to beg off on the park to allow us one more month as it is.. These guys we helped move some odd 10 years ago, helped set up hteir house and even painted it too.
FAR BE it for us to expect two ABLE BODIED people to help!!!!!!
GRR. So I said forget it we will manage somehow! Thanks for nothing!
So that is our plan I will rent a uhaul van and if the ABLE bODIED show up, so much the better. but not expecting them, They were only going to be able to help from 10 am to 3:30 pm anyway.
Sheesh... able bodied, but not able minded????
I just hope I don;t wear out to quickly.
Good Morning Folks!
It feels so good to be back & wake up in my own bed again! I am in a happy mood, so will you please put all what these chowhounds will be ordering during the day on my tab, Flo? I´ll just have a mug of coffee and a cinnamon roll, please.
I did some reading of older posts yesterday to bring me up to speed what has been going on during my absence. I am sorry there was a bit of a fuss about the help for Kelly, but I am glad that has been sorted out. I hope Kelly is improving - would you please provide us with an update, YGW?
Good to see John is back as a regular. John - SCARM is supposedly an easy program to learn how to work with, but it has a learning curve to it. It took me quite some time to figure out how to shape flex track or how to cut off track sections. I also find designing structures in the 2D mode a little cumbersome, as there is a lot of trial and error involved in adapting and positioning the roof and doors/windows. Let me know if I can be of any assistance to you for your layout design.
Someone ask the question whether my layout is a shelf layout (IIRC). It is not - it´s a small, 3 by 5 ft layout with a simple oval of track and a team track for some switching. Not much in terms of operation, but I find it rather relaxing to watch a train run through some nice scenery.
In case you have missed it, here is a 3D view of the plan:
... and from above:
My friend Lothar has sorted out the electrical problems while I was away. For whatever reason, the old scratchbuilt controller had given up its ghost and he rewired an old Roco PWM controller to be plugged into the control panel. There is something wrong with that as well - I have to watch carefully not to turn it up too much. At full speed, it delivers 26(!)V to the track and that would toast my locos! It´ll have to be replaced eventually. As long as I watch out, I can run a train, which I already did. I enjoyed after those weeks of being abstinent!
With the wiring done and the electrical issues now sorted out, I can start to w*rk on the scenery, which will basically mean cutting and shaping those boards of Styrofoam I bought shortly before being sent off to the rehab.
Another questions that was asked comes to my mind. About that engineer turning his head. The wonders of computer animation! I like that Google StreetView look of the layout. It shows you details you´ll never be able to see as a visitor! Miniatur Wunderland will open a new section this Summer and I will definitively go there! I have been to it a number of times, but each time I find things I hadn´t seen before.
I think I will go for a walk today - it´s still icy cold, but nice.
This morning´s view from our living room window, taken a few minutes after sunrise:
Have a great weekend!
Evening Dinners
Flo, please.
Ulrich Great to have you back at the dinner! Well, from your post full time in a day or two.
Today was boring here at home and at work, some times boring can be good.

I hate Rust
Evenin' folks!
Janie, I really, really need a cup of hot decaf coffee tonight.
Been a very long and frustrating day around here. I won't go into a lot of details, I'll just say it involves someone getting into my ebay account and selling some stuff.. yesterday I cancelledclosed my PayPal account. They had my credit card from about 10 years ago on file. Been years since I did any business with ebay or paypal. Spent an hour on the phone with someone whom I had a lot of trouble understanding. His English was OK, I just have major trouble hearing on corporate telephones. He was very nice and frienldy.... I wasn't! They have at least locked the account so no more sales can go through it. I have to wait to see what they do about the several hundreds of dollars of fees and stuff the ........... Ran up on the account. It had been selling for about 6 weeks as far as I can see. Ebay is not at all really helpful in solving these kind of things. You, the account owner are pretty much on your own...
Garry, good to see you! I think that particular post was written when the person really was not feeling good and under a lot of duress. 'nuff said...
I took a small break from growling online and on the phone today to drive over to Radidio Snack to see if they had some of the Terminal Strip Jumpers. Nope! Looked online and my guess is they are no longer going to carry the terminal strips and the jumpers. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr! I did get to chat with an old student of mine who after I mentioned that I wanted them to use on my model railroad, lit up like a large lightbulb. It seems she inherited from her Grandfather some 1950s Lionel stuff, still in the original box. She doesn't want to sell it but would like to know if what she has is worth anything. She wants to pass it down through the family. I told her some places she might be able to get ot appraised. Anyway, I came back home, went down to the train rooms and soldered some of my own homemade jumpers to do the job! They will work just as well!!! Another place to cross off the go into and buy list!
Years ago I used to make my own terminal strips using finishing nails... They worked fine! Did it then, I can do it now....
Hope all of you have had a better day than I did. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
Prayers for all of you in need!
Good evening ..
Galaxy ... I was responding publically to what you called your public comment. To be clear, I care about you and certainly pray for your health issues. You are a good person, ..... In that long public post last week, you said things I did not understand. I said it was not clear to me what your point was. I said you should answer Richard's question. In response to me, you made a terse comment which did not clear up your point in the long post. I waited a couple of days, and it looked like things were not cleared up, and so I commented. ... I waited a couple more days, and again nothing had been resolved as far as I could tell. ... Again, you are the one who started all of this with that long public post. .... In that long post, you said your integity was being questioned, but I see no evidence of that. You seen like you have very high integurty, and your efforts to help Kelly are very commendable. ... Now, Richard has stepped in to say he is okay with eveything and I certainly am glad that is so. I like Richard's comments, and he seems like a very good person to have in the Diner. ... Speaking of hurt feelings, I may have hurt yours. If so, I'm sorry. I was just trying to clear things up. .... The Diner is to be a fun place for all. .... Galaxy, one more thing: please get well !
Richard... Thanks for clearing up how you feel. Hope to see you here more often.
Lucy is all cuddled up between my arms whilst I am trying to type chicken wing style here, lol!! Her purrs are loud here....
After I finished the grocery getting and visit with the gang at our diner I went home and began replacing couplers on a few hopper cars ... and. promptly ran into my favorite bugbear... losing coupler springs...which, of course, meant crawling around on my hands and knees looking for the dern things...which I managed to do. Now, because of that, my sciatica is having war with me....das pain from das sciatica!!!
Good evening diners. I was able to do a little work on the layout this afternoon. Since gluing down another section of kerfed Homosote, todays' task was to fill in all the kerf cuts with joint compound. Should be able to sand the surface and do the final coat tomorrow. Started kerfing another section for yet another curve section into the planned yard area. Tonight I may cut up a couple of turnout sections of ties and have them ready for staining tomorrow.
I did my good deed and shoveled the neighbors sidewalk. He has a-fib issues and probably should avoid shoveling. Started on another neighbors walk but whimped out before getting to the end of the block. Just not in as good of shape as I used to be. We have about six inches of the white stuff heading for a total of 14 inches by the time its done tomorroww according to the local news.
Time for a nice hot bowl of chilli.
Later,
Jim
Well, 6 hours into Metformin, and my sugar is the lowest in 2 weeks.....at 133! AND that is after dinner of cinnamon Apples {questionable}, turkey leg {protein},and 2 table spoons only of stuffing with gravy { small amount of carbs bad}.
SO I am feeling good about it now, at least better, as long as my sugar doesn't drop too much more....It was 214 starving this morning before the Dr. appt.
SO THAT is getting under control.
The antibiotic doesn't seemt o be working, and the neulizer is nice but not the end all to be all.
OH oH OH,,,ULRICH is supposed to come home today! WELCOME BACK ULRICH! Hope he makes it safely.
I see I got TIppy TOP: so dinner of Turkey leg, minimal stuffing and cinnamon apples for all!
Not to worry, I am not hurt or upset. I have just found my time being spent elsewhere.
Richard
WEllm, the Dr put me on anither round of antibiotics, and a nevulizer 4 times a day,and Metformin for the sugar, hes skeptical aobut anything more as he doesn't wnat my sugar to drop too low eihter, if it improves on its own.
GARRY: WHy are you belaboring a post I "resolved" when I posted it and the follow-up post to it? You seem to posting aobut it nearly every other day, for a matter that might clearly not involve you. I said the post was for the public of the forum, If ANYONE has any direct concerns, they can PM ME. Pehaps you'd like to do the same??? Otherwise, since it appears NOT to involve you, or step on your toes, I'd suggest you let it go.IF it doens't concern you, doesn't involve you, it doesn't apply to you, now does it?
To all: thanks to those who have donated, I am still willing to collect funds for YGW's SIL until the end of febuary, then will forward through the necessary channels directly to her benefit. SHE and the boys will have other expenses than jsut the extraordinary medical bills she will face. PM me for details, I am sure we can raise a nice tidy sum to show BOTH YGW and his SIL how MUCH we care! I am sure we have DEEP hearts, even though we may have short thin pockets. It'd be nice if we could all had big deep pockets! I am amazed at who does and who doesn't contribute, the manner and the generosity of their wallets when I take a collection!
Now onto other matters:have a nice day, as the mortgage people told me. CoB called nad said the mortgage is now in the system, but they are clsoed todya due to weather in TN. I have yet to hear aobut the tracing of the funds CoA SAY they forwarded. i guess I will put the extra funds into a different institution to earn better interest on it, AND hold it to the next payment is due. Sad, that everybody wants money form you but don't wnat more to pay it off quicker? like KEN getting stuck into a new 30 years mortgage toget a lower payment!
RAY: we should have gone wiht the CU but approval was biff bam boom nad recommended to us, the CU might not have allowed us the mrtgage, even though we easily qualified for the convenitonal mortgage, as they have strciter reqirements, and would have made a mess of things. I am tempted to spend the $7k extr and re-close with the CU, but why pay even more? We already paid 100% closing costs ans the seller siad they wouldnot pay any part of it..GRRR
have a nice day {with a sneering smile}
