Jeffrey´s Trackside Diner - January 2016
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, December 31, 2015 10:47 PM

In memory of

Jeffrey Scott Wimberly

July 07, 1960-December 15, 2014

AKA Running Bear, Dr. Frankendiesel, The Spray Can Rembrandt

Volunteer firefighter, exceptional model railroader

and dear friend to many of us.

Jeffrey´s Trackside Diner was formerly Elliot´s Trackside Diner, but was renamed to honor our dear friend Jeffrey "Running Bear" Wimberly.

Jeffrey´s Trackside Diner is a meeting place for all who wish to join. We may talk on-topic, but also off-topic here (as a matter of fact - the only place tolerated by our hosts), but always within the framework of the forum policy.Talk about your ongoing or future model railroading projects, show us your latest acquisitions or simply share your day.

If you need to let off some steam, you can do it here, but beware - Cousin Vinnie, the proprietor, is keeping a close watch on the language and is unforgiving when it comes to violations of the house rules, same as the general forum rules!

The staff is exceptional, and anything you desire to eat is available 24/7/365. This would includeJanie, the twins Chloe and Zoe, Flo, Daisy and the latest addition, Brunhilda ! The food is always excellent and tasty, just the way you like it!

So, pull yourself in, bank you fire, and sit a spell and enjoy!

We just received the word that my BIL (Petra´s brother) had a heart attack last night. He is now in the ICU and it does not look good. He is only a few months older than I am.

Please include him in your prayers.

Goooooooood Morning Diners!  And a Happy New Year to all!

Zoe, about all I need this morning is a large pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast Coffee to keep my FGLK Mug full for a  while.

Ulrich, will keep your BIL and your whole family in my prayers during this time....

I arrived back here at my house around 2AM this year....  Woke up right at 9:30AM so the boys got their insulin a few minutes late.  There are a bunch of little white thingies falling out of the sky right at the moment.  the Weather peoples don't say how many inches of these little white thingies we are due to get today, but I think I shall stay right here at home and try to relax afetr a very, very busy day yesterday!  I have a couple projects that didn't quite get finished in 2015 that I need to get done by yesterday, so I will not be bored....  The Flyer for the MLK Celebration has to be printed, and I am only a year late getting to digitize a tape of the Churchy Bell Choir from many years ago (so old I was only producing tapes in my Music Recording Bursiness).  I do hope the tape is still good!

Guess I should get myself moving before I completely stiffen up!  later!

So, down at the Zoo, the Hippopotomus had an infected ear that was so bad the zoo keeper had to have it amputated. It also happened that the next day the gnu died. So the zookeeper to an ear form the dead gnu and attached it to the hippopotomus.

Well we strart the year off with some prayers for the needy:

FOr ULRICH"S BIL,

For YGW's SIL,

FOr others who need them,

for world peace

for health, happiness nad prosperity in 2016!

FOr those who wnat to contribute to YGW's SIL {Kelly} and her boy's fund, PLEASE PM ME!

IF you don't know the story: 3 thugs broke in, brutally beat her near to death, set fire to her condo resulting in a total loss of the unit and all belongings, leaving her with many broken bones and brain damage, and the two boys she has now homeless.Perhaps YGW can repeat the/his/her story here again for all to see.

THEY WILL need all the finacial help for every day bills, we don't hope to bring in enough to fund her medical bills, but a nice tidy collection of funds to HELP WITH THE EVERY DAY bills for the boys, and to start her off with a fund to help get restarted in her new life with BRAIN DAMAGE will be a boon!

SHe will undoubtedly need help getting resettled, and I know from personal experience how difficult it is to regain your life, possessions, documentations, and things for everyday living! A LONG, arduous process, costing lots of money. If you have not experienced such a loss, THINK of replacing JUST WHAT IS IN YOUR BEDROOM CLOSET, or your LIVING ROOM only, and multiply by the contents of the whole housing you live in! THINK of having to replace your birth certificate, your SS card, your driver's license, check/savings booklets ALL WIHTOUT ID to PROVE WHO YOU ARE!!

{{Speaking of which, now is the time to REVIEW your household owner's or renter's insurance policies and BE SURE you are adequately COVERED for your contents to the fullest ability of your policy! GET RIDERS for any particularly VALUABLE ITEMS/ARt work! IF YOU RENT, and DON'T have renter's insurance, GET SOME, it's relatively CHEAP..about $100/year. It helped to save my butt when the house I rented burned down in the middle of the night with me in it. The $10k renter's policy didn't cover my total loss, and while you CAN write off such losses on your taxes, it is only a part of a portion of a percentage of the unreimbursed loss! NOT the total remaining actual loss!!! I bought the policy only at the strong urging of my agent, and NEVER thought I'd ever need it, and in fact thought it a waste of my money! boy was I WRONG!}}

WE CAN raise a NICE FUND WITH YOUR HELP!

...I have $550 so far:

1}A past member's donation: $100

2}MY donation of $100

3}generous MRRer here's donation of $200

4} three donations of $50 each

ALready in hand. I have about $200 more in pledges to come sometime after today!

SO, get out your checkbook, be generous and help KELLY and the BOYS OUT!

PM me for details, PLEASE! If you don't knwo how, click on the icon next to my name on the TOP LEFT of this post, then click the "start conversation" button on the TOP RIGHT of the window that pops up then, adn title it somehting like "DONATIONS FOR KELLY.."

She may NOT be "one of us" BUT no one who is related to one of us needs to have been so abused and mistreated!!!

WE raised $2500 for Jeffrey's roof a couple of years ago, I think WE CAN BEAT THAT for YGW's SIL KELLY AND the BOYS IF WE TRY HARD!

A BIG THANKS YOU FOR those who HAVE donated! YOU have BIG HEARTS!

off my SoapBox now!

looking for YOUR PM today!

We went to spend New Years eve with clsoe frineds, like family. It was a nice quiet evening with dinner, champagne and Godiva chocolates! A good movie rounded out the evening while we waited for NY's MIdnight and the NYC ball to drop and 2016 to arrive.

I texted the NYC train nut friend at midnight, too. The otehr trian nut friend wasn't sure they'd be awake or home at midnight or I'd have called him too.

Overal a nice way to bring in t he NY!

I WISH ALL a Healthy, Happy and prosperous New YEar for the year of 2016!

Sooner than we think ti will be 2017! Surprise

SO, tell us , how was YOUR NY's eve????

It was a quiet evening for Petra and me. We usually don´t go out anymore - just can´t afford it. we listened to some good (classic) music, indulged in fond memories, shed a few tears about the loved ones we have lost - and went to bed at about 10pm. I woke up shortly before midnight and watched the fireworks while listening to Händel´s Music for the Royal Fireworks and went back to bed after that, finding Petra happily snoring away Whistling  The noise didn´t wake her up.

Today has also been a quiet day. We are very much worried about BIL Holger. So far, we have not got any news, which hopefully may be good. We are both prepared to drive down to Petra´s hometown, which is a 5 hours´ drive down south. I have to be back on Monday to start my stay at the rehab clinic, though.

Hello all

The boys are still with us. The little one is a handful! Man that boy is non stop energy. I do not know how my FIL & MIL do it. He just turned 70 ! No wonder they asked us to take them for a few days - so they could get rest !!! Thank God my three daughters are here to help entertain the boys !!

Ulrich - Here is a Angel for your BIL. I hope you recieve good news. You are going into a rehab center ? When ? Will we be able to communicate with you ?

Lion - LOL ! BowBowBow THAT was a good one. I am going to share that one with my kids.

Angel - Did you just wake up at 10:25 ? MOH had me up at 7 am !!!Bang Head then it was back to painting the study.

Blown out cylinder, Jeremy, Mr. Beasly, Galaxy - Happy New year to you too !

FLIP !!!Well hello havent seen you in a while ! Happy New year to you also.

Ken - Where are you ? Hope one of those New years rockets didt catch you by your coat tails and send you to outer space ? Happy new year to you too.

Recap SIL story as requested by Galaxy

SIL car was vandalized, three thugs beat the crud out of her, set her town house on fire. She has brain damage, two broken ribs, punctured lungs, third degree burns on her back side/legs, broken wrist which required operations with plates and screws to piece it back together, she has also had operations on the burns and "donor" grafts used. Early on she had a brain bleed that seems to be under control. She was in ICU for three weeks and then down graded to lower level icu just this week. The police have at least one bad guy in custody and there has been a homocide investigation opened up. Her boys are ages 6 & 8 years old. Thye lost everything in the fire just like their mother did.

I have finished the study except for the built in book case. The walls and trim are painted. The book case has been sanded, puttied and caulked. MOH is going to pickup primer and more paint so I can wrap that up tomorrow. PHEW that room was a LOT of work. AT least five days or removing cheap trim, reinstalling nice trim, prep, putty, wall point up, sand, prime, paint the ceiling, semigloss the trim, paint the wall ( three stinking coats ) and then final touch up.

Where are we on this ride ?

I´ll be going to the rehab place on Monday for a scheduled 3 weeks´ stay. The clinic is in Bad Driburg, a rather uninspiring town, which has a nice model railroad exhibition, so there will be some entertainment. I´ll be taking my laptop computer with me, but I am not sure whether I´ll be able to connect to anything. Time will tell.

GM, MEN!

Today's word:

jayhawker

PRONUNCIATION:
(JAY-haw-kuhr) http://wordsmith.org/words/jayhawker.mp3

MEANING:
noun: 1. A robber. 2. A native or resident of Kansas.

ETYMOLOGY:
Originally, a Jayhawker was a member of antislavery guerrillas in Kansas or Missouri during the US Civil War. It’s not clear why they were called Jayhawkers. Earliest documented use: 1860.

USAGE:
“On occasion, Jennison’s men joined Jim Lane’s jayhawkers in a series of hit-and-run raids.”
Wilmer L. Jones; Behind Enemy Lines; Taylor Trade Publishing; 2015.

“Some Kansans are complaining that Miss America Tara Dawn Holland isn’t exactly a Jayhawker. ‘She wasn’t really Miss Kansas,’ Joyce Carron of Wichita said as Holland arrived for appearances in the state. Responded Holland: ‘I learned a long time ago that home is where you hang your hat.’ She attended the University of Missouri at Kansas City, after three attempts at becoming Miss Florida.”
Arlene Vigoda; Losing Faith; USA Today; Oct 16, 1996.

today's quotes:

You have not converted a man because you have silenced him. -John Morley, statesman and writer (24 Dec 1838-1923)

The greatest way to live with honor in this world is to be what we pretend to be.

Not life, but good life, is to be chiefly valued.

I only wish that ordinary people had an unlimited capacity for doing harm; then they might have an unlimited power for doing good.

MAKE it a great day

YAY!

I am once again computerized via the laptop at the new house! The cable man was here to fix it.

After 2.5 hours ont he phone trying to get teh "easy consumer plug and play" to work, the tech was sent out. He got it all connected and up and running. HOO-ray! He was nice to boot, some are nasty and ugly aobut things....

good. Now the old hardwired computer can be brought here too, but first we buy a new comuter desk for it. Gee, you never justt buy a house! the laptop is wifi, but the old computer is not nad dont anyone tell me how easy it is to insert the wifi card into it! I have trouble just inserting a plug inot hte wall often!

so now I am happy!

what else? the electrician was supposed to work today but hes got his daughter this weekend, so he stopped buy for  a parts list. then off to do things wiht his daughter so he couldn't work...tried to call us bu t the cable company disconnected out phone before being sure the phone owuld work on thier end! two days without hte phone! he FIL pain in the tukkus, stopped by unannounced ecause he panicked over NOT getting ahold of via phone...GRRr we HATE whne he stops by unannounced nad now we live closer to him. We could be, er um, "engaged" with each other, or generally  entertaining others, or wanting to be alone and not disturbed! NAd he just drops by. WE HATE that! one of these days hes not gonna like hte way I'll answer the door for hhim, but I cna't tell you aobut it here.....

now I gotta get reuse ot the latop, being without it for over  amonth.

well, gotta go chek LOTS of emails, only checked the most important ones via cell phone.

Galaxy - good to know you are now back among the "connected"!

My friend Lothar called a little while back, telling me he finished the rewiring job on my DC controller. I went over to his place to pick it up. It wasn´t really a pleasant wakl - it has turned icy cold and there is a good chance we will get the predicted sn*w during the night.

When I was home, I plugged the controller to the control panel, but it didn´t work Crying There is no juice available on the rails. Either it´s the controller or the wiring of the blocks which is causing the problem. It´ll have to be sorted out when I am back.

Tomorrow will be packing day. I have to bring enough gear for a three week stay along with me, that´s going to be awfully big bag to tote along! If I had known of the need for three weeks in a rehab place earlier, I would have built something like this

to take along! Would have been nice to be able to run a train after the day´s chores!

Morni....  Hmmmm...  I see it is lunch time here in the diner!

Chloe, I'll have a Ruebin Sandwich with all the trimmings abnd a cup of hot chocolate to keep me happy.

Dark, gray, and gloomy outside here in the Finger lakes today.  We actually have some white stuff on the ground that has lasted a couple days.  Should get out and put some salt down where I scrapped the stuff off the portch and the driveway getting to the car yesterday.  The solar panels tried to start up yesterday, but didn't get enough sun to even clear the white stuff off them.  When the sun comes out in a couple days, they should clear themselves quickly.  I am doing a bunch of odds and ends today.  this afternoon I hope to start digitizing the old tape of the churches Bell Choir I did about 18 years ago for them.  It does appear to work so it should just be an easy job.  Just will tie me up for a couple days.  Also have been down in the train room making some decisions on the bridge piers for the Girder Bridge.  Will need to redo the one I just put in a bit to make it prototypical for it.  Walls are straight up and down and I need to make the ends wider at the bottom on at least one side...  I think I have a plan.

Galaxy, now be nice to your FIL.  I'm sure he worries when he doesn't hear from you or can't get in touch...  A Quote for you....

"Guard your tongue, for it is highly dangerous; Unguarded words can cause terible distress.  A single bad word can destroy a vast quantity of good.  A wound caused by fire will eventually heal; but a wound caused be the tongue leaves a scar that never heals." - Valluvar

I am still trying to get some of the MLK members to come and take a bunch of Flyers to distribute....  Guess I'll send out another email.

Catch you all later.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Please

Work Sucked Rail Spikes, so that is covred! Whistling

Sue Front Hee, Hee, Hee, she getting around pretty good to tell me what she wants me to do! Smile, Wink & Grin When I got home today, I did the dishes and put them up, did a load of laundry, walked Sparkie The Rocket Dog, washed out Sparkies food dish. Gave Sue her dinner in the bedroom and finally made it out to the train room / garage. While in it self, not a big deal. Yet I find it funny she can get out of bed and tell me to do something for her! Laugh

Any JMRI users here in the dinner? Seems I lost all of my engine roster stored in JMRI. (Engine numbers, road names and CV Values for the decoders) It was working fine in 2015, but last night, not a single engine was saved.  I have not seen anything about the problem in the DCC fourm yet.

 New B&O Bachmann engines.

GP-7 Great looking and running engine, cannot pull caboose about 9 cars max so far. Still very happy to have it.

GP-30 Looks OK and that is about it. Makes a hollow growling sound like the shell maybe lose. All so once in a while it will make a Spunking Sound, like maybe the flywheel is sliping. Need to figuer out how to get the shell off and see what is going on.

Evening, and Happy New Year, Chloe - I'll have a go cup of hot chocolate, please.

My apologies for dropping off the face of the earth (well, only seemed like it). This past year, I had changed agencies (now in a group counseling practice, and the pay structure varies a bunch more, including because many insurance companies are s-l-o-w-w-w to pay). So a chance to also work a temp job that was $8/hour (but full-time for two months - Nov., Dec.) to help replentish my IRA Roth account (which has been my supplement for Social Insecurity) sounded helpful. My stress level, however, was down because I'm doing much more stuff where I feel like I'm making a difference (in most cases, I'm not perfect...). I have dropped my weight back to within 10 lbs. of where I was back 25 years ago (that's good). I used an app that helps me track what I'm eating during the day - which helps me adjust my eating habits during/later in the day & not totally pig out.

I got an email from Flip checking if I had got washed into the Muddy Mississippi, so I figured I should check in for the rest of any Diners who know me and might've been wondering also. We have been getting a lot of rain, but fortunately, I live about 3-4 miles from the river, with 3-4 hills between the river and my apartment building.

Things with daughter, son-in-law & the 2 grandsons are improving some, and we just did our gift exchange last week for Christmas. No train stuff, alas... But not lots of headway on the train/layout front, since I have been busy in afternoons/evenings seeing clients (usually appointments between 1-7 pm.). Actually, I'm looking to de-clutter my apartment and move to a 2-bedroom apartment, so I can  have a better shot at some progress on the layout.

On Dec. 18th, I was coming home from seeing my insurance agent (changing companies for the car), and wound up with my car broadsided by another (on the passenger side); it was totalled, so now I have a rental   car until the 7th, and am hoping to get the settlement check a day or so before that. And amazingly, I wasn't hurt in the accident (small skinned strip on my right leg just below my knee, and a minor bruise on left knee that didn't show up until couple of days after the accident.

Looks like some of you Diners have had your own difficulties (for yourselves and/or family/loved ones), also. AngelAngel for healing of those.

Take care of yourselves and loved ones, and may you get some worthwhile Zzz tonight and other nights this week. Thumbs Up

Not sure if I'll be able to get in, as I'm needing to let the MR subscription go for now. Sigh

Blessings,

Jim in Cape G.
