9 hours since Jim in Cape Giardeau?? GOOD to know he is fine..the national news kept focusing on his town!

GM, MEN!

I had another migraine yesterday. I wonder if hte bad headaches, the near migraines, hte migraines of late are caused by the herniated disc in my neck. It is pressing hte nerve to the rihgt arm by 35%. Surgery is what hte neurosugeon is leaning towards,,,,because of hte weakness showing up in it. PT is NOT helping much, but feels good, but i wonder if the "let down" form the traction is causing more headaces than not?

Ulrich won't be wiht us maybe for 3 weeks. Wish him well, if he can geet this.

todays word:

magnificat

Good Afternoon Folks!

Well, I am all set for tomorrow´s trip. The bag is packed - all I need to add is this laptop computer! I am not sure whether I will be able to connect to the Internet, I just hope they have WiFi resources available for the "inmates".

I´ll be taking an early train out and will arrive just past lunchtime. It´s a 4 1/2 hr. trip by train - driving would only be 2 hrs. I don´t think Petra will come and visit me - the road conditions won´t be good at this time of the year and she does not like long drives. We will see...

Temperature has dropped below freezing and there are some sn*w flurries coming down. I bet everything will be white by next morning! I have ordered a taxi cab to pick me up at 7.45am and take me to the train station. It´s a little over a mile to get there, but I won´t be taking any chances by either walking there or have Petra driving me.

I found a video on an interesting "model railroad" in the UK:

Cute, isn´t it?

CU all in good health when I am back (or connected .... )

Good morning ....

We arrived home from our trip late last night. Weather was good on travel days, but there was some snow while we were there. My truck is now coated with ugly Michigan road salt. ... ... Looking at our lake now, and it is about 10' higher than normal winter levels.

JimCG ... Good to see you. Please visit in the Diner more often.

Ulrich ... Praying your recovery from surgery continues to do well.

YGW... Continued prayers for your SIL, Kelly.

I'll review everybody's posts later today. I hope everyone includes model railroading in their new years resolutions.

Have a great Sunday !

I'll be going north to ski in a few hours.  My wife's bringing her laptop, but I don't have one (one computer is enough for me) so I'll probably just stay unplugged for a few days.

So, keep the tracks clear while I'm gone and best wishes for everyone.

A couple of hours ago it started to sn*w here and we already have about 2" of that white n´ wet stuff. I am just glad I´ll be taking the train tomorrow!

Found another nice Lego loco built:

The builder attached bespoke etched brass plates, making it look a lot more realistic. There are also much better looking side rods & other steam gear available, but he wanted to stay within what Lego offers.

One day I am going to build one of those!

Edit: I was just submitting a rather nasty reply to the "DCC is dead" thread, when the mods must have removed it. Aw shucks!

2nd edit: I just found a suitable passenger car for the loco!

Hello Diners - and "Felix sit annus novus" as they may have said in the Roman Empire. BTW have you ever thought what our world might be like now if the Romans had taken Hero of Alexandria's steam turbine seriously?

John - PM is answered!

If my memory does not deceive me it reads "Happy may the new year be". Regarding SCARM, there are a few helpful tutorials on Youtube, which helped me to get started. I find SCARM rather easy to learn, but there are, as with other programs, a few nitty-gritties which seem to be illogical.

I did the design work for my current layout project with SCARM. Here is the latest 3D rendition

All of the structures are designed by myself, which was a little tricky, as SCARM is not a full 3D tool. You have to design structures in a 2D mode and at info on height and position above "ground" to it. Took me some time to get that right. The trees are to be found in the SCARM library.

Slowly heading for the hay - it´ll be an early start tomorrow.

I hope to see you all soon!

Garry - Thanks for the prayers. Is the lake 10' higher due to tide or rainfall ?

YGW

YGW ... Rainfall is the answer. Inland lakes do not have tides. This region of the country had heavy rains during days near Christmas.... We are on one of two large man made lakes in western KY. Between them is a National Recreation Area called Land Between the Lakes. ... You may read about it at LBL.org ... The TVA is estimating we will have high water by January 7 which will be about 15' higher than the norm in the Winter. (In Summer, water level is usually about 5' higher than in winter.)

Ulrich .... Praying all goes well for you..... The Lego engine looks fun.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a refill for my decaf please.

Been a very long and busy day around here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS.  Got up earlier than normal so I could get to church on time to be an Usher today.  I also took a pile of Flyers for the MLK Service coming up in a couple weeks with me just in case the leader of the Local Council of Churches and Synagog happened to be there.  He was and I passed most of them on to him to deliver out to the local Churches (and Synagog...).  The sound system at church is once again picking up a local radio station on one of the Microphones used for recording...  Checked that out after church.  We were able to isolate the problem to a particular mic and I think I know what happened.  The wire has been fastened down pulling on the cord and I think the ground is bad on it.  It was causing a problem some time agao through the hearing assist system (from the same mic) a few months ago.  Then it seemed to correct itself.  Has bad cord written all over it.  I once picked up the same station while getting ready to do a profesional, on location, recording of a choir program of a Music School associated with another church in town several years back, and I found that the 50' mic cord I was using was to blame.  Luckily I had a bunch of smaller ones I could use to do that job!

Came home from church and changed the strings on my Guitar so I could give Granddaughter #1 her Guitar lesson later at her house.  Came back home after supper at my son's and actually did a few minutes work on the bridge project and a bunch of odds and ends I needed to get done here on the computer.  Now I am checking out what I missed here at the forum all day.....  I haven't played the guitar in several years now so I have no callouses on my fingers...  I know what my Granddaughter is feeling when she practices....  One of my resolutions is to get the technique back under my fingers and start playing some music again.  I can hear well enough to do that....  Just doesn't sound the same (right), if you know what I mean (and you don't unless you have a serious hearing problem...)

Time to head out to bed for the night.  Prayers for all in need!

Gidday All, A belated happy New Year to you all and I hope we all have a less drama filled and more positive one. So Chloe would you please put a little tipple of whatever the Diners want on my tab.
I have had my nose to the grind stone lately but did manage to get a couple of days off to spend with the family at a friend’s holiday home, though to get the time I started work at 0500 New Years Eve and didn’t finish until 1830, thank goodness I had to only drive down for an hour. However I was unable to keep my eyes open to see in the New Year, though I was woken with fireworks going off all around.  For two of the three days it rained but, while not good for holiday makers especially those camping, we did need the rain and besides I managed to take her-in-doors for a coffee or two, and get some reading done.
Now I see amongst the really Good Stuff in the New Year’s Edition of WPF a photo of Santa Lehman with a Toblerone Cheese cake which last mountain & eastern hogger made thecomment “OK, share the pie or at least tell us where you got it..............Yum”.
Now, to be fair, I haven’t been dropping into the Diner that much of late but I was still under the impressionJohnboy that for you solid food was still, sadly, an impossibility, so I hope by posting the recipe that my daughter uses to make her Christmas Toblerone Cheese Cake that I shared with Mike, that I’m not indulging in cruel and unusual practices.Sad

Toblerone Cheese Cake

Ingredients

 • The base
 • 200g Digestive Biscuits (Chocolate Digestives are best)
 • 100g Butter
 • The Filling
 • 300g Cream Cheese
 • 200g Whipping Cream
 • 200g Toblerone
 •

Method

 1. Crush the digestives, and melt the butter in a pan. Once melted, add the digestives to the butter and mix together.
 2. Place the base mixture in a springform cake tin (approx 8") and press down until firm and even.
 3. Melt the Toblerone in a bowl over a pot of simmering water.
 4. Empty the cheese into a large bowl and beat until smooth. Lightly whisk the cream until almost stiff and then add to the cheese.
 5. Add the melted toblerone to the mixture and mix well (the whole mixture should be light brown).
 6. Pour the mixture onto the base, smoothing out. Bang the cake tin on a solid surface to ensure the mixture settles.
 7. Refrigerate for 2-3 hours, then add some small pieces of chocolate to the top to serve.

Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.
Cheers, the Bear.Smile

Steven Otte

JaBear,

I assume your "digestive biscuits" are what we in the States would call "graham crackers"?

...sadly not Steven. Digestives have a much more oatie texture - and if you ever track them down (hidden mrr reference LOL) go for the Dark Chocolate covered (IMHO of course!) Since this is a commercial free zone, i won't post a link - but if you Google "Digestive biscuits USA sources" you will find where you can order them.

Ulrich - (should you be lucky and have WiFi in Bad Driburg) We hope that your fears are unfounded, that the food and staff are good - and that the whole experience is beneficial and effective. We're pulling for you! Thanks for your PM reply - and I'm glad Holger's situation is so much better, and probably not heart related. Yeah  On the SCARM learning curve, it's a matter of remembering the basic commands. I'm basing the design on Atlas Snap Track and using a good deal of Flex track. Getting the latter to behave is my challenge right now. I'm referring to the training videos. I'm just doing the track plan to begin with, not the 3D stuff. Baby steps, baby steps!

I'm also not familiar with digestive biscuits. However, Bear's recipe looks like a good one. ...

If you want to try another tasty desert, try a Kentucky Derby Pie. The original recipe belongs to a restaurant near Louisville. It is basically a pecan pie with chocolate and boubon added.

Hi everybody,

It's windy here a small chance of rain, but who knows.

My new years resolution for the layout is: To finish completely on freight cars and some locomotives. I'm going to try to buy some structures, people, and scenery if necessary. Perhaps maybe get a door and foam, or maybe make a small switching shelf layout.

My other new years resolution are: Buy new nails for the Christmas lights outside since the old ones are falling out or getting to lose.( I was going to that last year and I didn't twice) Actually getting an to drive because I have my permit.

Afternoon folks!

Chloe, just a refill for my dark roast coffee at the moment...

"We're havin' a Heat Wave...., Tropical Heat Wave....."  As Galaxy mentioned we are having much more seasonable temps here in Upstate New York at the moment.  Currently 11°F outside here in the Finger Lakes Region with a low tonight around 12°.  Feels like -6° with the wind chill.  We were under a Lake Effect Snow Advisory, just ended, which didn't really amount to much where I am.  Got about an inch or so of sn*w on the ground.

I am doing a couple loads of wash and waiting for a lady in the MLK Committee to stop by and grab a pile of the flyers to take around the Community advertising our March, Service, and Dinner on MLK Day.  I will be heading to Canandaigua as soon a she leaves to drop off a good amount of $$$ in Checks that got sent to me for the MLK Scholarship before the end of 2015.  Need to get them to the account ASAP so the 501c3 thank you letters can go out to the donors for tax purposes.  Some one of these days I hope to get caught up on all the stuff that needed to be done last year!

Hope you are having a good one out there!

Hi from Scotland, I haven't posted for some time due to serious medical problems( it turned out not to be cancer but very scary). So now back in the diner! I am posting a addition to JaBear's post the "digestive" biscuit s he refers to to are probably the most popular in Scotland! They are made by a company called McVities and the are simply the best thing to eat with a cup of tea or coffee!!!! If anybody fancies making "the Bears" delicious recipe and have trouble finding the biscuits let me know and we see what can be achieved. In the mean time "A Happy New Year " to all! I hope everything works out fine for you Ulrich and hope and prayers for all in need.

Hi guys, I am usually the "keeper of the flame"....lighting prayer candles for others, but now i ask for prayers for train nut friend's son!!!!!

Many of you know I am Bipolar, and I have only once mentioned trying to commit suicide 3 times once. Obviously I didn't succeed. TNF's son has mentioned almost weekly the desire to do it, often in couple with asking/demanding somehting from the parents they wouldnt grant, so he pulled the suicide card, but once hung  arope in hte garage silently and once tried jumping off the second floor balcony wiht a rope tied around his neck.It got to be the boy who cried wolf, but I didn't take it as not serious, but also pointed out that most who try/attempt/suceed HAVEn't talekd aobut in advance.

EACH time they have taken him to CPEP {Comprehensive Psyciatric Emergency Program} he would have calmed down and claimed he wasn't serious. He is into alcohol and drugs, wastes most of his paycheck whne he works on that, and mom nad dad have to pony up for his basic living bills.Whne he doesn't have the drugs/alcohol, he is very anxious, depressed or enraged  and mentions suicide again. I told them MOST people who {including me} DON'T TALK about the suicide, rather just commit or attempt to silently, so I was not so worried, but oncerned. I have sworn since I have known them aobut 10 years ago, the son is bipolar and in manic goes on rages and litterally tears doors off hinges int he house and punches holes in the walls, and causes general mayhem and damages things. He HAS come after the TNF and TNF HAS called the cops on him at my urging, but again, he'd calm down by the ER pre-admittance to CPEP.

He has treid meds but only for a day or two, and psychiatric meds dont work "immediately", they have to build up in the brain to do any good. Mental illness, for those hwo don't know is all aobut chemical imbalances in the brain. Nothing to be ashamed of. If he didn't feel immediate relief, he'd stop taking them. He'd go back to the drugs and alcohol.

I used to be an alcoholic, as the alcohol DOES have the "feeling of immediate relief" from the depression and anxiety! BUT the alcohol is  a depressant and thusly causes worse depression when sober, so more alcohol is needed. I used to be a 'funcitonal alcoholic" in that I drank a gallon and a half {yes that much} of vodka a day AND carried on at two fulltime jobs. I found working more than one job gave me "purpose and focus" for when I wasn't drinking and I considered it "consturctive energy spent".The TNF son is very much like I was/am, only he can't handle more than one job.

MY last "wish"  for death {remember I died once on allergic reaction to a medication, so I am NOT afraid to die} preceeding suicide attempt was when I spiraled down to depression and drank for a week in June, before being admitted to CPEP involuntarily, due to my past history. I coudn't get inot our local hospital so was admitted after 2.5 TORTUROUS DAYS int he ER , and fianally got admitted in Cooperstown, 1.5 hours norht of here, and yes, home to the baseball hall of fame. TNFson WAS luckily admitted to the local General Hospital [real name}, so it is easier for them to see him , but I stressed to TNF to strongly urge he go on involuntary status and suicide watch as voluntarily he said "I'll give it a day or two trial",and that is NOT enough time for this 24 year old.

They denied him admitttance about 6 times in the past, and SHOULD have taken him by the 6th time, but it took 3 tries for me and my first suicide attempt foiled by MOH at that time {not my current OH}, as MOH came in the door just as I was slicing my wrists open wiht a razor blade. my then OH Called the cops nad they handcuffed me carefully and took me involuntarily to General Hospital {real name} to CPEP who finally took me. It was in 2008 after i silently drank/took ALL my pills, all controlled substances and prescription sleep aids, downed with a bottle of vodka, that once the DTs were over I told MOH {current} to take me to CPEP, dd so wihtout question, knowing my history. They won't talk to anyone under the influence of any drugs or alcohol until you dry out in the ER.

This/that time the psyciatrist spent 4.5 hours interviewing me nad finally said "we've been treating you for depression, you're not depressed, you are Bipolar!", Once I had the corrected diagnosis, and was treated for it, I began to feel better and was doing well until the co-pays for my psychotropics got to high last January and we played russian roulettte with the meds trying to find one that woudl work that i could afford. since 2008, I was fine with the meds I DO take, but nto the other substitute meds.

I have sworn since day one of knowing this kid/about his antics that he IS bipolar. But as long as he refuses to take his meds-evne for just depression part-, he won't get any relief, and he needs therapy to unload his problems, examine his faulty reasoning and beliefs and really get some true help.

Hopefully, they will change his admittance to INvoluntary AND suicide watch. He WON'T like it, in a room under 24/7 watch with only a blanket for company, but they should get him into therapy groups such as MICA {Mental Illness Chemical Addicted} and Cognitive {dostorted thoughts} therapy and even art therapy to help hm find focus when his mind wanders to bad thoughts.

General Hospital's CPEP is HIGHLY structured, which he needs, with lots of time taken with groups, WHne I was in Cooperstown {no room at the inn in General} it was litterally a JOKE. They only offered art therapy and we colored pages a lot to pass the time. The psychiatrist got me on my usual med for ONE DAY with a discounted program for me to get it on the outside, and shoved me out the door before I was feeling ready to go!

GOOD thing he is in General, they will hopefully do some good f or him.. get him started on good meds to help him wiht the RIHGT diagnosis. BUT, HE has to follow through wiht treatment FOR LIFE.

So prayers they suceed with him, he stays if voluntarily, that he STAYS, and that meds and therapy will do him good, PLEASE.

Sorry for the long detailed history of me and him [IF you all even bothered to read it}, but without hte history hard to underestand why he needs PRAYERS desperately!

whew.

Good afternoon diners from snowy mid-Ohio River Valley.  We are experiencing snow showers this afternoon as a reminder that it is really winter.

Digestive bisquits = tasteless, unless dipped in chocolate.  I had my first experience with them this past year as friends stock their camper trailer with all sorts of treats when we harvest wild rice and I picked up a package thinking they were cookies.  They are not.  Can't say I am a fan.

Worked on layout the past couple of days.  Stained enough ties for two turnouts and have one turn out doubled taped to a template and ready to glue down.  I have to do a little finishing and painting for the switch stand location before I glue the ties to the road bed.

Uhlrich, hope your sojourn at the care facility goes well and that the people are friendly, kind and caring and the food is acceptable.

Hope that none of the diners have had flooding issues.

Welcome Welcome Welcome to the diner form a fellow decent scots-irish american. I was scottish first. {and norwegian ohter side..but the norwegians had invaded scotland so I wonder if my family tree has a "wreath to it" {goes in circles}.

PLEASE do stop by more oftern, we are freindly on this side of the pond! Our esteemed member Ulrich, is in Germany, but is in hospital now, so you won't/maynot see much of him till out. SO don't feel lonely in here!

Welcome again!

Galaxy, will keep your friend's son in my prayers.  I have a neighbor with a son who is bipolar and has been in and out of JV detention as he has broken law several times and got missed up with self medication.  When he is on prescribed meds he is very functional but when he goes off he gets in all sorts of trouble.  Your description of the problems with obtaining mental health care and proper medication are a sad commentary on the whole country's mental health system.  Something I pray about all the time.

Good Afternoon,

A sunny, warm day here as it is about -6C so I guess that qualifies for a Ray Tropical Heat Wave.

All this talk of Digestive Biscuits. Think I'll pick up some at the store tomorrow. They are stocked in virtually every grocery store in Canada, both domestic and imported, plain or chocolate dipped. I like both. And Garry you are right, they aren't really cookies. I was surprised to hear that they aren't well known 'south of the border'.

Not much new here. Think I will have a coffee and run a train while waiting for Bondi Vet on TV at 4. I have the Dairy Queen largely painted with just the red trim to do. I think I will wait until I have some figures to put inside before I assemble it. I also have to clear a spot on the layout.

Nice to hear from Cape Jim.

Whistling

Hi Gang,

Haven't been in this year yet as I worked 6.5 hours on New Years Day and then 8.5 hrs. the next two and today been out with my Wife doing some errands.

So, a belated Happy New Year and hope that you all had a good time watching the New Year come in, and that the rest of the year will be a great and memorable one for you..

Galaxy,  There is an enclosure in the mail to you at your new address, it went out this afternoon.Watch for it in about a week to ten days.

Garry,   Glad you are home safe from your travels and that you are well above the water level.

JaBEAR.  That request I made to Mike was for the rest of you guys.  If I had some I would have to blend it and dilute it to get it down my tube, then I would still not get the enjoyment out of it as I get very little if any taste of stuff that goes down that way. But, Mike sure does look like Santa, doesn't he.

CN. Charlie,     Still nice weather here and will be until the end of the week. Much above normal and very little snow cover.  Expect the week end to change that some. It will get down to around -17 to 18 the guessers say.

Couldn't find any small electrical plugs and recepticals around the city here, so I settled on a couple of two prong automotive plugs that I will use to electrify the elevated station so that if I want to remove it I can just unplug it and take it off the layout, for whatever reason. They will work but it would be nice to have smaller ones. I'm busy putting up the Iron Railing around it and some concrete railing on the road leading up to it right now. Slow going but it is shaping up well.

Prayers continue for all in need.  Sure hope Kelly is improving and has a miricle all her own.

Ulrich, be a good fellow and do as you are told there.  No chasing the Nurses for therapy, but be diligent with the therapy and get well soon to get back into the old groove.

It is great having Der John and Cape Jim by here again.  I was looking at some old posts the other night and have a hard time believing that so many Diners have stepped aside.     I really miss all of them as I bet you all do too.  Come on back MIAs you will always be welcome here.

All for now, have to go and tie on the feeding tube, will check back later.

Johnboy out........
