Good Morning Folks!

It feels so good to be back & wake up in my own bed again! I am in a happy mood, so will you please put all what these chowhounds will be ordering during the day on my tab, Flo? I´ll just have a mug of coffee and a cinnamon roll, please.

I did some reading of older posts yesterday to bring me up to speed what has been going on during my absence. I am sorry there was a bit of a fuss about the help for Kelly, but I am glad that has been sorted out. I hope Kelly is improving - would you please provide us with an update, YGW?

Good to see John is back as a regular. John - SCARM is supposedly an easy program to learn how to work with, but it has a learning curve to it. It took me quite some time to figure out how to shape flex track or how to cut off track sections. I also find designing structures in the 2D mode a little cumbersome, as there is a lot of trial and error involved in adapting and positioning the roof and doors/windows. Let me know if I can be of any assistance to you for your layout design.

Someone ask the question whether my layout is a shelf layout (IIRC). It is not - it´s a small, 3 by 5 ft layout with a simple oval of track and a team track for some switching. Not much in terms of operation, but I find it rather relaxing to watch a train run through some nice scenery.

In case you have missed it, here is a 3D view of the plan:

... and from above:

My friend Lothar has sorted out the electrical problems while I was away. For whatever reason, the old scratchbuilt controller had given up its ghost and he rewired an old Roco PWM controller to be plugged into the control panel. There is something wrong with that as well - I have to watch carefully not to turn it up too much. At full speed, it delivers 26(!)V to the track and that would toast my locos! It´ll have to be replaced eventually. As long as I watch out, I can run a train, which I already did. I enjoyed after those weeks of being abstinent!

With the wiring done and the electrical issues now sorted out, I can start to w*rk on the scenery, which will basically mean cutting and shaping those boards of Styrofoam I bought shortly before being sent off to the rehab.

Another questions that was asked comes to my mind. About that engineer turning his head. The wonders of computer animation! I like that Google StreetView look of the layout. It shows you details you´ll never be able to see as a visitor! Miniatur Wunderland will open a new section this Summer and I will definitively go there! I have been to it a number of times, but each time I find things I hadn´t seen before.

I think I will go for a walk today - it´s still icy cold, but nice.

This morning´s view from our living room window, taken a few minutes after sunrise:

Have a great weekend!
