SCARM, not as steep a learning curve as XTrckCAD, the later I haven't figured out. SCARM has better teaching videos, but I never figured out how to add buildings, which is too bad because I think I am planning too much track and not enough space.
Yup, there is a certain danger to have too much track and not enough space for structures or scenery. I always crinch when I see track planned to the very edge of the benchwork, leaving no room for some kind of a "vertical transition" between the track and the backdrop.

To make buildings in SCARM, you basically draw a rectangle in the 2D mode, using the"figures" function (scroll down on the track system library) and then add position and height in the settings for this object. Click on the object and you can add a roof to it. IIRC, there is also a video tutorial on how to design structures.

I have probably spend well over 200 hours on my plan, but it was a learning by doing affair.
