Evening Diners,

I treated my mom with breakfast today before she flew out to see her daughter in Virginia.

She's leaving one dog to visit an another. He's name is Charlie another pit bull not a wiener dog. If my mom knew about him earlier before booking the flight she won't have gone.

Good afternoon diners.  Haven't been by in a while as we have been busy with the Christmas season.  Bought tree on Saturday, decorated it Sunday, made Christmas cookies Monday, went to Souji Christmas concert in Colombus, OH on Tuesday with local senior center group, enjoyed nice weather on Wednesday and did some Christmas shopping today.  No time for working on the layout which kind of bums me out.  I have received most of the back ordered switch ties from Walthers along with the order from the actual manufacturer.  I have kerfed up a section of Homosote road be for a switcch location and ajoining curve.  Its time to mill up a bunch more road be  with the side bevels.  Starting to lay out a switch yard entrance.

Uhlrich, sorry to hear you had to indure the bypass surgery but glad to see you back among us.  Hope your healing process goes smoothly and the surgery improves your overall health outlook.  Enjoyed your posting of Edison's old movies.  They have to be some of the oldest train pictures available.

CN Charlie, I noticed that it was still snowing this morning north of you.  Sure sign of winter.

Galaxy, quotes from Aristotle are certainly timeless.

Have a great afternoon and evening and enjoy the Christmas spirit.

Afternoon folks....

Ulrich!  That gif is absolutely adorable!!!  Sweetest thing i have seen in a long time...

Barry, bummer on the starter.  Hope it doesn't set you back too many $$$.

I mailed the rest of the Christmas Cards and then stopped at the Credit Union before heading to a local liquor store to get the Holiday Hootch I like to have around the house this time of year...  The owners (brother and sister) are former students of mine,. so I always get a warm welcome.  Their Mother (who used to own the store with her late husband) was sitting near the counter so I chatted with her for a minutes or two also.  While I'm wandering around finding what I needed I hear my name shouted from down the aisle...  Three of my students from back in the 80's were there.  Took a while to get out of the store. Laugh  They wanted to know if I heard from many of the teachers that were there at the Middle School back then.  I filled them in on where some were and what they are doing now.  Fun!

Cookies are baking in the oven (White Chocolate Toll House) as I type this message...  Need to check on the current batch.

Later!

Good Afternoon Diners,

Flo, I'll have an extra large coffee with lots of cream, please.

Der5997:  and anyone else who's interested, Brunhilda aka Brunhilde, is a fine lady who works the evening shift at the diner.  She took the job to pay her way through brain surgery school.  You got the basic idea with the St. Pauli girl clip art; however our old friend Ulrich was lucky enough to have a picture of Brunhilda, which he was gracious enough to post a couple of months back.

Big SmileBig SmileBig Smile

Actually, someone else started Brunhilda when I first started following the diner about a year ago.  I've long since forgotten who it was, but me being of German descent just thought I'd perpetuate it just for fun.

i hope more people start letting Brunhilda help them with their food orders, but in any case, when I post in the evening, I'll be happy to let Brunhilda wait on me.

Ulrich: I'm glad to see your surgery turned out ok.

Hi to everyone and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!

CNCharlie
I have my camera battery on charge so I can take a photo of my N scale to send to der. Just so he doesn't think I have forgotten.

....to everything there is a reason...LOL  No Worries CNC, I'll keep an eye on my inbox. That battery thing bites me in the nether regions from time to time - mostly doing museum phots. Those however are mostly done and dusted and the artifacts remaining to be catalogued are scannable documents which I can do sitting at this desk. This is a good thing as the area now occupied by my camera setup is prime layout real estate!  This shot is from very near the ceiling and i couldn't see the viewfinder!

Astute diners will notice the afore-mentioned circles drawn on door shapes on the arithmetic paper lying on the lowest of the cabinets against that far wall    LOL  That wall, BTW is 7' so should accomodate one door, while the steps on which I stood to take the photo were at least 10' from the corner - so 9'+ in that direction is attainable. I'd like to bolt the two door sections together and mount the legs with casters to make the whole "L" thing easy to move/get around.

Later....

Never met anybody with the name of Brunhilda or Brunhilde (that´s more German). Brunhilda means armored fighting lady - like a battleship Whistling

I just found this on Youtube:

I enjoyed watching it a lot!

John - I liked MR´s former project layout "The Salt Lake Route" quite a lot - all it needs is staging, but that could go on one of the legs of your planned "L"-shaped layout.

Good day Diners.

Flo, I'll have the Avaccado and salmon salad please. Black Dark Roast would also be fine, Thanks.
Howdy everybody.

Der John ... I am enjoying seeing your posts. I don't know where Brunhilda came from, but the name sounds German to me.
That was my thought - but you can take your pick for origin and meanings  http://www.sheknows.com/baby-names/name/brunhilda - and since it turns out she could be good in a fight, once more Diners are advised to tread carefully. But y'all do that anyway, right? RIGHT?

Drawing circles of about 30 inch radius (conveniently sized jar base as I'm not inclined to go hunting for my set of compasses) on a plan of two doors arranged in a "L" - I must shake the tendency to think of the track plan as the dogbone on which I've been fixated. CN Charlie should be sending me a pic of his layout for ideas - Yeah!

Good Morning,

We were hit with a winter storm yesterday that dumped about 15 cm. on us plus we expect a little more today. The wind is supposed to get up to gusts of 60kph so there will be white-outs and drifting. Oh and the temp is supposed to drop to -12C this afternoon. At least the elves came and shoveled the driveway. Not sure if we will make it out to Tai Chi this evening.

Good day to light a fire in the fireplace and eat nice stuff. I have started a couple of Athearn heavyweight coach kits I bought at the train show in the fall. I managed to get an IHC interior kit that I am cutting down to fit and then will paint it. I have some seats I can put in the other coach.

Ulrich, sorry to hear of your surgery but then again I guess it was a good thing.

I have my camera battery on charge so I can take a photo of my N scale to send to der.  Just so he doesn't think I have forgotten.

Well time to get at something or other.

I just had my own trip to the doctor, just a follow up.  My numbers are still good on the blood sugar.  I did not have coffee this morning, and just as I suspected my blood pressure was significantly lower.  So, remember that.  Coffee shortly before a blood pressure reading can raise it (temporarily) by 10 points or more.

Yucky weather.  40s and light rain.  I won't be doing any biking today.  But if we get the predicted warm weather without the predicted rain, I'll be biking during Christmas week instead of skiing.

Good Afternoon/Evening!

Folks must be busy getting ready for Christmas - no time to stop by for a chat among friends ...

Claus came today and the two of us got the benchwork issue straightened out. Well, he did most of the work (in fact, all) Whistling

It was less of a job than we had thought it is. Just getting the old and warped tabletop off the cabinet which holds the benchwork, and replacing it with two joists bolted into the cabinet. The benchwork was than fastened to the joists with metal angles. Looks like a sturdy contraption to me now! There are even two additional benefits to this - the layout is less noisy and it is much easier to do the wiring etc.

Claus also installed the small control panel I had built prior to my stay in the horsepiddle.

We did some test runs to check the layout. Claus enjoyed it very much - he told me that he bought a Fleischmann N scale starter set a few years ago and is now looking into building a small layout!

I have a lengthy doctor´s appointment coming up tomorrow - just to make sure everything will be fine for the weekend.

Have a good one!

Good morning everyone! Chloe, I could really go for plate of biscuits and gravy with a side of sausage and a large glass of chocolate milk.
Ulrich, my friend, I'm glad to see you around but terribly sorry to hear of your surgery. Keep your head up and do what the white coated people tell you, my thoughts and prayers are with you.
Galaxy, I'm glad to hear and see that yall were able to get the house and that it is going well.
Mark, sorry to hear that the big C has come to visit you again, like Ulrich, keep your head up and open a can of whup-a on it.
All right, I know I keep dropping the proverbial ball on making it back in here on a regular basis, but I promise that I'm stopping by to at least make faces in the windows. Things are going well around the house, the Christmas decorations are all up, the kids are excited (as they always are). I've got my motorcycle put up for the winter (needs a new rear tire anyway), deer season is upon us down here (although the weather has played hades with it), and I've been looking at starting an MRR project or two just for fun. One project includes possibly settin up a simple oval layout in my son's room so he can "play with daddy's Choo choos" (under my supervision). Another is possibly building a shelf layout for myself and using it as a module for my upcoming full-size layout (not as sure on this one, bit it's possible). I'm also of course, still looking for more locomotives and rolling stock to tinker with.
Well, I guess that's enough of my rambling (I was certainly long winded enough), so I'll just leave my CC here to cover everyone for the day.
Later taters.

GM, MEN!

I have a friend coming up fro m the city today. SO I will be busy.

Today's WOrd:

saccharine

PRONUNCIATION:
(SAK-uh-rin, -REEN, -ruhn, -ryn) http://wordsmith.org/words/saccharine.mp3

MEANING:
adjective: Excessively sweet, sentimental, or ingratiating.

ETYMOLOGY:
From Latin saccharum (sugar), from Greek sakkharon, from Sanskrit sarkara (gravel, sugar). Earliest documented use: 1674.

NOTES:
The name of the synthetic sweetening compound, saccharin, is derived from the same Latin word as today’s term. The compound was first produced in 1879, but the usage of the word saccharine goes much earlier. For example, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote in 1841:
“One might find argument for optimism in the abundant flow of this saccharine element of pleasure in every suburb and extremity of the good world.”

USAGE:

The most preposterous notion that Homo sapiens has ever dreamed up is that the Lord God of Creation, Shaper and Ruler of all the Universes, wants the saccharine adoration of His creatures, can be swayed by their prayers, and becomes petulant if He does not receive this flattery. Yet this absurd fantasy, without a shred of evidence to bolster it, pays all the expenses of the oldest, largest, and least productive industry in all history.
Robert A. Heinlein; Time Enough for Love; Putnam; 1973. **************

*********** I am NOT responsible for the usage quote!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today's OTHER quotes:

-G .

Just my thoughts, ideas, opinions and experiences. Others may vary.

 HO and N Scale.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Ulrich I am so glad you had the need surgery! Looking forward to seeing how the bench work comes a long. So there is a real Santa Clause. Yes

Day Off / Work Front Yep, I had to go to work again on my day off. Confused My check comes on the store delivery truck. It was delayed till Wendsday, so I dropped by to get it.

Want to guess who did not have all the store lights on AGAIN?  Yep, you guessed it, Jerry! Whistling While I was there, I checked the Product Sale Report that he all ready check. This is a list of things sold the day before and the PSR has to be checked against the sales ticket. He had faxed it in saying it was all OK. It was not OK, in fact a coustomer was going to have a Queen size box delivred to be used for a Full sizes mattress they all so bought at the same time. Think they be miffed?

Well, the BBQ is done, trains are running nice so all is good with my world tonight. Unless the alarm company calls that is! Laugh

  • Your generous donation is much more than I thought it would be. This disabled veteran was pinching himself in places where I could still feel to make sure I wasn't seeing things. This will go a long way to getting the good 318 and getting it installed so I can have good transportation again. Thank you very much!

You are very welcome my friend, glad I could help. ''Happy belated Birthday''. Happy B-Day

May we both have many more.

Me again!

My friend Claus called in to see how I am doing. He´s the only one who came to see me during my stay in the hospital (aside from Petra and our son, of course). He´ll be dropping by tomorrow to fix that benchwork of mine so I´ll be able to run my trains over the holidays. I told him this will earn him a new title - it´ll be Santa Claus from now on, although he sure is no saint Smile, Wink & Grin

Whistling

Morning Gang,

Nothing for me Chloe, as I just finished my oatmeal, granola, yogurt, viamins and Ensure blend, so I'll be fine for awhile.

Really pleased that we have found out that our good Buddy, Ulrich hasn't completely disappeared off the planet.  Sorry Ulrich, to hear what you had to endure, but so glad they caught it and have made you part of the Million Dollar Man family.  After some rest and Rehab you should be good to go with the rest of us.  Take care my friend and we look forward to your wise wisdom and skills that you share with us.  My best wishes to Petra as well.

Just a few loose ends to finish the Christmas hassel today. A couple of Church Member visitations to do today and tomorrow, to some elderly members. And then just wait until our Son and DIL from Montana arrive. (not till the 23rd.)

I did set up a circle of track under the tree this year. Hadn't done that for awhile. But the Grandson has already shown that he loves it. He will be getting his own Thomas the Train set this year from Gpa and Grma.

The sanding (smoothing of the concrete area under the Elevated Station is coming along and I have two out of three of the track's flangeways cleaned out. One of the two turnouts still work fine, but the other will need some fine tuning. Fortunatly they are turnouts that do not get all that much use but will get them back in order shortly. Hope to get the concrete painted in the next couple of days.

Well, my wife says she needs the puter, so for now I'll sign off.

Hope you are all enjoying the spirit of the Season do remember the Reason for it and give thanks for your many blessing, great or small.

Welcome back, Ulrich!  And congratulations on the surgery!

Yeah, I know, surgery is not pleasant, but I play hockey with a guy that had a quadruple bypass some time ago.  That's real hockey, on ice, not a table game.  I think you will feel significantly better.  Try to get out for a short walk every day and let yourself enjoy it.

Now this is where You would use the brackets, like You did when You first tried to insert a PIC'. In order to make a prior cs.trains thread clickable...You must use the brackets.

Thanks Frank - I'd used the "chain" icon for that link, and it obediently showed blue - but useless obedience isn't what I was after! LOL

The one that I remember from the North West was Sue and her husband Larry who was a trucker. I can't say for sure if they were in "S" . I haven't heard from them in quite awhile and have asked several times on here about them but never received an answer. Johnboy out..............

Yes, come to think about it I was probably Sue and Larry I had in mind, (but had forgotten their names) I've got it stuck in memory that they were in S - and a logging layout. As to "Sebring" she may have even been back in the "Coffee Shop" days - but again, I associate her with S Scale. I've tried to trawl a bit for her handle on MR Forums, but haven't been to see if there are archived Coffee Shop files. I need Draino for my memory! LOL

I guess it had a dead battery.

Best laugh I have had this week!  Oh.... Which one?  It has two you know...  The little tiny 12v lead acid battery, if it is an older Volt may be due to be changed out anyway (It is about the same size as a motorcycle battery).  But then the wrecker could have just jumped it like they can do in your old car...  It doesn't actually start the car but puts it in ready mode.  If you are talking about the propulsion battery, that is highly unlikely as there have only been a couple that have ever had to be changed.  And on most of the ones they thought had a battery problem it turned out to be a bad sensor...  (I've had that on my old gas guzzling Dodge Dakota.)  Only 10kWh of the 16.4(?) kWh battery is used to protect the battery itself. The Volt will still run on Gasoline you know...  More likely a flat tire or it got towed by being parked in the wrong place! Smile, Wink & Grin

Mornin' Everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of Almond Crunch Granola Cereal and a pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Roast Coffee for my R&GV RR mug please.

Currently 40°F under mostly skies with a high of 42°F later sometime soon I think...

I spent all last night printing out my Christmas cards...  Today I have a whole bunch of meetings and errands to get done so I will be not getting the cards mailed out until Thursday I guess.  Still have to print some photos to include with them anyway.  Kitties have to go to the vet to get their blood sugar checked late this afternoon.

(Edit) Ulrich!  You posted while I was typing...  I do hope the bypass will make a good change in your being able to lead a more normal lifestyle!  Will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers!!!

Best get moving!  Catch you all later...

Where is Ulrich ?

I am here - quietly tucked away in the back booth!

Good Afternoon!

I spent the last two weeks in the hospital, where I had to go through a triple by-pass surgery. I am home since this morning, still not feeling up to par - more like a roasted turkey at Thanksgiving. I´ll be home until after the holidays and then maybe being sent off to a rehab center somewhere in the country. I just hope it´s going to be a nearby place, so Petra can come and visit me. I also hope they can restore me to an extent I can pick up some of my bad habits again - like MRRing, certainly not smoking (sorry for that Ken).

I will be more of an infrequent visitor to this place in the coming weeks, as I have very little to report or contribute these days.

Good to see John is back!

Have a good one!

P.S. I am still very much saddened by Jeff´s passing. I just wish I could have dome more for him.

Yes, I remember Jeffrey fondly. Recently, while packing trains, I found a couople of boxes Jeffrey had sent me that I bought or traded him for. It was a fond memory. I Still can't believe he is gone. ANd in the manner in which he went. Cancer is no picnic, but his diabetes effects on his body was unbelievable.

RIP Jeffrey with the Great Spirit.

Galaxy .... Your post is one of several nice tributes to Jeffrey. I guess we will always miss him.

Frank .... I finally acquired the Slyrvan kit for the White tractor. Thanks for the advice. Meanwile, I built some white metal casting kits of a road grader and a bulldozer.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer please.

I still miss seeing Jeffery here at the dinner. Running a few of the rolling stock I trade with him for.

Last Night Out burst. I am still recoling from the 25% base pay cut. Cars need around $900.00 in repairs and I am down to $1370.00 in savings. While I have the house payment covered for this month, next one looks pretty bleak.

When I got home and found a $85.00 medical bill of my wife I have to pay. (she had some injections done to her right knee) What set me off was her flipping like comment. "Well $85.00 is not bad, the injections should be $1500.00". While it was a inacent comment, it hit me the wrong way!

Of corse it not bad to her, she has never helped with any of the bills in the 40 years we have been married! When I was making $75,000 a year 25 years ago we got a long OK. Now I never ever wanted her not to work! Now that she is disabled she cannot get disability income because becuse of her lack earnings. Heck, she cannot get Soical Seurity because of the same reason.

There is way more to this story that I feel like typing about. But that comment she made just sat the wrong way with me.

Actually, Ken, I'd rather go where everybody knows my name.

Mr B In my case, it would be bill collectors! Mainly my wifes.

Mark Sorry to hear about the Big C again! Reading about your health problems make my problems seem a lot smaller.

Trains are running well, broke out the Santa Fe Erire Bulits A B units (Proto 1000) and all most forgot what a sweet running engines they are!

 See you all later, Ken

 PS Ulrich god speed.
