Good Morning Diners,

Flo, I'll have an extra large cup of coffee with lots of cream, please.

Don't have anything exciting to report today.  Yesterday was pretty non-eventful for us.  But, the rest of the city didn't fair as well.  Had severe thunderstorms both North and East of us.  North, they had a tornado in the air, but to my knowledge it never touched down.  The media makes it sound like the sky is falling, nuff said.

Reading a little on the web last night about the battle of Saipan.  Ghastly casualty rate of which many were civilians from a suicide charge.  Seems the defenders told the local populace that the invaders would maim and torture them and the Emperor is reputed to have told everyone to do the suicide charge, or at least hold out to the last person.  In any event, Saipan was a very strategic victory.  It assured the outcome of the Pacific Theatre.

It was a very different world then, steam still ruled the rails!

Big SmileBig SmileBig Smile

Can you believe it's August already?!  Summer is so short here.  Blink and it's gone.  Not looking forward to winter, at all!

Gotta get ready for work.

I hope everyone is OK and safe.

Less is more,...more or less!

Today's word:

heimisch or heimish or haimish

PRONUNCIATION:
(HAY-mish, HY-) http://wordsmith.org/words/heimisch.mp3

MEANING:
adjective: Homely; unpretentious.

ETYMOLOGY:
From Yiddish heymish (domestic), from Old High German heim (home). Ultimately from the Indo-European root tkei- (to settle or dwell), which also gave us home, haunt, hangar, site, situate, and hamlet. Earliest documented use: 1964.

USAGE:
“Most of his deal-making takes place over the heimisch cuisine of Gilda.

I feel fairly certain that my hatred harms me more than the people whom I hate. -Max Frisch, architect, playwright, and novelist (15 May 1911-1991)

Where there is love there is life.

The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.

Prayer is not asking. It is a longing of the soul. It is daily admission of one's weakness. It is better in prayer to have a heart without words than words without a heart.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Please

Nice Peacfull Day At Work. While this is not good $ wise, I need a break. It was 96 degrees out here and a pretty day. So either it was to hot, or just to nice to go shopping.

Rear Gate While it is far from a work of art I have it 60% bulit. I picked out the best of my twisted Pressure Treated lumber and had at it. One end it is so twisted there is a quater inch gap. I braced end with a small section of 2X4 and will add a couple of metal braces at that end.

YGW I am still in the thinking stage about the fence it self. I see no way around moving the gravel so I can stay in my proptery line. While Dwight (guy next door) said he was fine with me placing fence post on his side on the proptery line. When I asked him how far (I was hoping for a foot) he said "We are friends, but what will the next owner say?". Well he is 89 this year so I sort of understand.

 Later, Ken

Ulrich:

Hope tomorrow goes smoothly.

Maybe it's time to Try and get yourself a cane with a seat to it...like this:

http://aol.nextag.com/cane-with-a-seat/zzaolcobrandzB1z0--search-html

Folds up for a cane, and expands like it shows....

We have two: one for me obviously, and one for MOH, due to the Paget's diseased hip, MOH sometimes needs a break too...

They certainly come in handy, even with a fat derrier like mine. I can only sit on it for a short time {about 20 minutes} then I need to stand up, but it sure "takes a load off" when I am tired of standing...

best of luck for a great sunny warm beautiful day for the funeral tomorrow. It makes the day seem better, when its a beautiful day for a funeral. My mother's was a pretty warm august day, Mutti's was a nicesunny  fall October day.

Ulrich - do you get "winded" quickly with your heart condition ?

If that´s what I understand, the answer is unfortunately yes... Whistling. Sometimes I wish I had that amount of gas in the tank of my car Laugh

It´s closing in on 9.30pm over here, so I am slowly heading for the hay. It´ll be a hard day tomorrow, standing up for more than 2 minutes is still an issue.

Ulrich:

My mother suffered a life with that dreaded disease! she was diagnosed at age 23, and passed at 59, a week short of her 60th b-day. The years had not been kind, but the last 5 years of her life were dreadfull to her. Several mini-strokes, loss of speach, loss of vision, SHe had, for many years before those last five years, been a  quadruplegic from the disease. I was a mere 13 when her life in a  wheelchair in 1976 began. She too , was fortuante enough to pass in her sleep.

Condolences to Petra, please! (you too)

Ulrich: See the PM I send.

Good Evening!

I had a day of rest. As much I enjoyed yesterday´s trip to Bruchhausen, as exhausting it had been. A day of doing nothing but relax sometimes does wonders.

Tomorrow, we will attend the funeral of Petra´s aunt, who died end of May. It´ll be just her son, his GF and us, a quiet ceremony to say good bye to someone we dearly loved. Else was a wonderful person  with a big heart. She was suffering from MS for nearly 40 years. Nature was kind to her to let her close her eyes in peace without too much suffering in the final stage. Her ashes will be buried under a tree in a burial forest.

I won´t be in tomorrow morning (missing PF again), but hope to be able to join you later in the day.

well, the miracles of technology never cease...

We have a:

Desk top computer,

a laptop computer/built in tablet

Our tablet

MOH's work tablet {which hardly ever works}

And two smart phones...

DO YOU THINK any two of them {except the identical cell phones} WORK ALIKE??

NO!

Even using Google chrome, they don't play well with each other...

GRRR, as a neighbor of ours says: "The ABILITY of {high} tech has far outweighed the NEED for tech..."

MOH was trying to plug in the auto-pay system work is now using...can access it onthe work tablet {that hardly ever works} and now thinks it is on MOH's cell phone...finally we tried to get it on our tablet {a freebie from Verizon} that should tell us something!}

MOH finally has problem MAYBE solved.

GOOD to see TODD in! Glad to hear of the non-recall status, but it begs the Q can they be "tapped", as it were, and controlled remotely too? I don't know why they picked on Chrysler/Jeep, as the first car I saw taken over on news was a chevy!

KEN: sounds good for your sales, have a Beer on us.

YGW: don't knwo what I was gonna say now, must not be inportant...

well, MOH is working on clenaing off the fornt porch, so maybe I'd best go help, though my cramping gut says no activity.. I worked on the shed, MOH can work onthe porch...

Jerrmy,  You need a sheet of marine plywood.  A good contractor's lumber yard should carry it.  This is the type plywood used for boat floors and should last several years outside.  One source says Ontario Plywood in Hamilton stocks marine plywood.

Nice pics, Howmus.  I've driven past that bridge enough times on my way to Gettysburg and DC, but I've always been afraid to stop along the road and take pics.  (I have, however, stopped at a used car lot and shot pics of the west end of Enola Yard -- but not for several years).

I got to take a field trip to see NKP 765 yesterday.  It was a beautiful day for chasing a train, so I did.  I took my old film camera and the digital my wife bought me so I could get different shots (the 35mm has a more flexible lens than the digital). Between juggling cameras and setting up in the wrong spots, I probably blew some shots, but oh well.  I shot a roll of B&W because it was fitting to shoot steam in B&W -- those Staufer books had a big influence on me.

Gooooood Morning!!!

Coffee and the Sunday Breakfast Buffet please. Thanks. (where DO they keep all this stuff!?)

When someone says to me some variation of, “hey, let me ask you…., this…” I say “sure, I’ll give you an answer whether I know it or not. (squints eyes) I’m just that good”

YGW- Sorry about the AFIB thing, but assure your wife (good luck) that heart issues are NOTHING like they used to be. Most times people live normal lives with just a few alterations. My wife is one of them. I hope and pray the same for you.

Speaking of shoes and spending money not plannedSigh. After years of resoles (kinda lost track at about 9 or ten resoles/heels), , I gotta get a new pair of boots. The tops came loose from the sole and I’m not real sure they can fix that economically enough to choose a repair over new. Or if they even can without affecting the size. Oh well, they’ve been good boots. Leather is still good, just not attached anymore.

WElp, another week of same old same old. Oh well, rather have a boring life than no life at all ya knowYes. Need to pressure wash the back porch….I prefer the term porch over deck. Deck sounds like there is water involved. Or a boat. Then comes the poop deck comments and it sorta goes downhill from thereHuh?. Aaaaanywho, probably try to achieve that today and prep for restain and do up some low and slow ribs. Mmmmm, MM. Good. Probably have to do the wood covers for the basement beams too. I hate doing the spindles. I firmly believe no flag causes people to go crazy, it's painting spindles. If yo look back, you'll probably find they've painted spindles on a railing, or a picket fence. That'll push you over the edge too.  And considering my little friend asked me just last night if I had replaced the exhaust fan/light in the Mbathroom yet, I assume the wife has mentioned it to her….againGrumpy. HmmOr she was just curious. That’s my plans for today….unless something good comes on TV…it’s Sunday you know. The only day when TV is allowed to take precedence over workYes. Kind of a religious thing of sorts. 6 days then rest and all you know. I think I've seen about all the "Mysteries at the Museum" episodes.

Brenda loves her new Durango, that’s good. (neither it nor my truck, which is smack in the middle of possible recall victims, is involved in the recall) She got a little snippy when my friend asked me when I would take her for a ride instead of asking her and that's bad, but…all's better. Sometimes I think she does and says things to put a little zing in my lifeMischief.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Well, We WERE going to go to the REn Faire, but lets just say everything is running right through both of us....don't know if we picked up something or if it is something we ate. We got a nice loaf of Extra fibros/seeded bread, that may not have been bad,but just not being used to so much fiber, may have done it. I am staying away from it now just in case, and close to the facilities.

I also was chilled all day yesterday and sinuses runnning ,which leads me to believe we have been exposed to something.... I am hte sensitive one, NOT MOH, so for MOH to have the same things with such a  strong constitution, probalby means we were exposed.

we will miss the REn Faire, but oh well. Maybe we go later, but at about 2 hours ride with stops, it won't be likely.

It is celtic weekend, and I'd be wearing the kilt, laddies, but I think not...not the way I feel.

Hope everyone ELSE is Healthy, Happy and prosperous!

August 2nd, 2015!

Today's word:

tummler

PRONUNCIATION:

MEANING:
noun:
1. A comedian, social director, or entertainer who encourages an audience or guests to participate in entertainment activities.
2. One who incites others to action.
3. A lively, mischievous man.

ETYMOLOGY:
From Yiddish tumler (one who makes a racket), from tumlen (to make a racket), from German tummeln (to stir). Earliest documented use: 1930s.

And when Lou Goldstein proved adept at other forms of entertainment, the hotel signed him up as its tummler.”
Joseph Berger; Lou Goldstein; Pittsburgh Post-Gazette; Apr 29, 2012.

An advance man is the tummler of American politics. He is the guy who gets out the crowds, creates a sense of excitement around the candidate, and generates the smell of victory at every stop.
Burt Glinn; The Wit and Wisdom of a Political Barnum; New York; May 31, 1971.

Today's quotes:

Neither genius, fame, nor love show the greatness of the soul. Only kindness can do that. -Jean Baptiste Henri Lacordaire, preacher, journalist, and activist (1802-1861)

Well, Here in my neck of the woods, it is August 2nd, already! by 7 minutes!

Here is Steamtown's other favorite, CPR # 2317, the Pacific type.:

Penn Rail Videos: The farewell shot, as she is now in dry-dock:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g17MJaLP-3k

The engineer, Seth, {he may still be there its been a while since I have been there} to show off his locos there, and I asked him once which he like to operate, the MIKE #3254, or the Pacific #2317. He said the Pacific is a MUCH smoother loco to operate, and the MIKE is rougher. so for passenger ops, he prefers the Pacific. Seth also has a smaller ride on steam train he likes to run during special event like the Labor Day event.

can't get much better than a live steam belching steam loco!

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer please

Work Was Busy Today For A Change. While not a great day, no where near as bad as the 15 days? By the 14th of last month I had $16,000.00 in sales and ended with a mear $20,000.00? So only $4000.00 in sales for the last 17 days? Whistling Today I had around $2950.00 in sales, so that is more like it but still far short of what the store use to do.

The photo wasn't taken today....  It was done back in 2010 or 2011, not sure which.  Yes I really got lucky.  Took a while to get a position where I could get the shots without getting run over by a car or truck. WhistlingLaugh

Spot on the money Don!  I was on my way home from the York, PA G Scale show with a RR and Musician friend of mine and we decided to drive over on North Front Street to see what we could see just North of Harrisburg.  Interesting history to that old bridge.  When built it was the longest stone arch bridge in the world.

I thought it looked familiar. It really is a beautiful spot (nice pictures btw!). I've railfanned it a few times and generally take a drive by whenever I am over to the Capital. You had great weather as its a little cooler today then its been as of late.

Happy modeling!

Regards.

I don't shoot pucks.  I only stop them.

G'Day, diners.  I went out for a bike ride after the weather people gave the all clear and, well, I got wet.  I've got to start putting the cell phone in a plastic zip-lock bag no matter what the forecast.  I shut it off and slipped it into my Lance Pants so it wouldn't get soaked back there in my jersey, and it survived, but I worried about it.  Me?  The bike?  Who cares?  I've been wet before.

Evening guys

a nice day out today and was planning on shooting some pucks around but when I got home from work I was just too tired.

actually I have a question for you guys

i shoot pucks off a piece of puckboard  ( a hard slipper plastic ) but want to put the puckboard on a piece of plywood but don't know what kind to go with? It would have to withstand rain and snow as it would be left outside. Can anybody suggest what I would want to look for

thanks
