Jeffrey, do you get a trade-in on your old motor? It may not be healthy, but I'm sure there are a lot of good parts on it.

I doubt it but it's something I'll ask about.

Good morning. It's 72° with 94% humidity. The high will be 95°. Cloudy with a fair chance of rain.

Nothing special going on today. I'll be calling the scrap yard with some questions about the 318 they have. Other than that I'm waiting on the Home Health nurse to call. Other than that no plans.

Happy Bastille Day!  The crew at the Tour de France were referring to it as the "French Independence Day," but that's really not right.  It was the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789, but they were overthrowing their own monarchy, so they were already "independent."  Still, it's a time for celebration, so I'll have a croissant, some cheese and very strong coffee, please.

Jeffrey, do you get a trade-in on your old motor?  It may not be healthy, but I'm sure there are a lot of good parts on it.

Very good work there Ray.

Thanks to those of you who are helping me through this vehicle problem.

Good evening. Cool but very humid here. 73°/91%. I was out earlier making another Youtube video. This one demonstrates how difficult it can be to get the engine to crank on a cold start. Sometimes it won't crank at all. This time it did, barely. It's at the end of this post but ahead of the photos at the bottom. It'll be a click link called 'Van Start'. Now that you know that you know what to avoid if you don't want to see or hear it.

Nothing done on the computer or train front today. I watched a few movies though. 'A Man Called Sledge', 'Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home', 'Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country', 'The Train'.

Van Start

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Evenin', Janie! A go-cup with decaf, please. Thank you!

Galaxy - sent you a PM back (You'll read this in the morning, or if you wake up for a midnight snack...). Mine should hopefully be out in the mail by Tuesday (depending on whether I can get by the credit union over lunch), or at least by Wednesday.

Rob - good to see you by the Diner again. Thumbs Up Hope things (and your critters) are doing well enough on your farm.

Had to go to the office after church for a couple/three hours this afternoon. When I tried to get the w**k laptop to connect to our office servers Saturday, it sort of worked, then slowed down when I did some copying & pasting, then lost the connection. May have to stay late this next week to get things caught up.Bang Head

About time for me to head for bed. AngelAngel for those in need of rest, healing, or those celebrating special days this weekend!

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I could sure use a cup of decaf right now....  Please and Thank You!

After getting home last night around 1:30PM from the Twilight trains event, I had to be at church by 9AM this morning....  The evening train runs were fun!  Wish we had gotten about 50% more people there, but we all had fun on train crew.  One family that rode on the Erie Caboose had a daughter to looked bored and completely grossed out that she had to come and spend a Saturday evening at a museum riding on old stuff.  After i got everyone informed about what was going to happen during gthe trip, etc, (Safty stuff) the girls father asked me if I had worked for the railroads. I told him, "Nope, I was a vocal music teacher and taught k - 12 and some college classes over the year 32 years I was a teacher.  Told them I taught Middle School for the last 19 years of my career.  Then looked over at the bored little girl (who had started to pay attention to what I was saying.  I said, I bet you are going into 6th. grade in the Fall.  She looked at me and said, "Yeah!"  I chated the whole way up the line with the family and when we detrained at Midway I was "helping" folks get off the train saftly.  The little girl got off the caboose exactly how I had told them to, then looked back at me and gave me a huge grin!  I think she decided that riding in an old caboose with an old music teacher with her family wasn't so bad after all...

We also had a disabled man (could walk with braces... likely a nurelogical problem) about 20 years old riding the train.  His Mother brought him out for the event.  When He got off the caboose he took quite a long time and both his Mom and I had to help him get down the ladder (steps).  His mom appologized for taking so much time.  I told her it was not a problem at all, and that I had worked with many disabled students in my career and that I was now blessed to work with a handicaped Scout Troop.  She brightened up and told that was great.  I told her that one of greatest Scouting experiences i have had was when a seriously autistic Scout made it to Eagle after overcoming with many major issues.  She then told me her son standing right there is also an Eagle Scout and is now an Asst. Scoutmaster in his troop.  I walked over and gave him the Scout handshake and congratulated him!  Both of these little stories are some of the reasons I love to be out at the museum playing with trains and meeting so many people!

Church...  Other than the fact I could barely keep my eyes open, the new sound equipment worked as expected and definately is better than the worn out Mackie we were using.  Both the guy who runs the sound and I did some tweeking of levels.  It will still need some fine tuning over the next few weeks..

Oh, I even managed to spend some time doing a small project for the layout friday and today.  Building a small Steel girder bridge overpass.  It will, as usual be a scratchbuild...  I had the basic girders and spacers assembled on Friday:

Closer view:

Today I got some angle iron reinforcements installed and the braces between the main beams done:

This is being built using plans drawn years ago by Harold Russell.  It will be adapted to fit the space available for it on the layout, but fairly faithfull to the drawing of a NYC bridge he did.

Sounds like Jeffery may get the old van back up and rumbling down the back roads once again.  Great!  Hope it comes along with no problems and can get done soon.

I will be going out to Boy Scout Camp late tomorrow afternoon to spend the day filling in for a couple adults in the troop that have to leave tomorrow during the day.  Both of us Commissioners will be out there with them.  We will be back home by evening as the others will be back buy then.

Catch you tomorrow, and have a good night!

I am assuming that the 318 your father found will work, or all is for naught? MUST it be a model same year as the van, which, btw, is what year again?

'81 Ram Van. A 318 from a '80 Tradesman/Sportsman or '81 to '84 Ram Van should fit like a glove and the tranny bell housing should bolt right to it. If not, it's a scrap yard. They should have the right part floating around someplace.

If you pre-cook Chicken before you grill it...like boiling it first, then add your seasoning, you won't have flare-ups and will cook better. Never try to BBQ raw Chicken, if that is what you are doing.

V8Vega

Sun. 100 Mon. 97 Tue. 96
I don't eat a evening meal at home for 5 days. Instead eat at different church events, I do eat at home during the day. Fri and Sat at one church the rest at my big church.
Every Fri. I go to a singles group, they have a hospitality table almost as good as a potluck.
Every other Sat I go to a mens fellowship with a all you can eat breakfast.
Sun there is bagels and donuts at church plus my friend that I go shooting with we go to lunch.
Mon. I'm going to a missions program with refreshments, probably sweet stuff which I will go easy on.
Tue my favorite Vintage fellowship with a generous snack table often fruit so I can avoid the sweet stuff.

That's good for need and socializing! Aren't they fun! And good fellowship? Do they collect donations for a good cause at a reasonable price?

At one time, I used to know who had a "meal time" at any given church supper when I needed it. The problem was some nights was clear across town and getting together bus fare was tough. I could tell you who had what where and what time. and I don't do well at socilalizing fellowship with strange {new} people, part of my mental illness. it often was by voluntering that I'd get out to those and not isolate, the evil of my illness.

The suppers were good suppers usually, and the one food pantry that I donated my time at {and borrowed from in return} often donated the fresh goods left overs that we recieved form the grocery stores on the days we were "open" to the various church suppers. The suppers are for anybody, no Q's asked.

You may not be going to the special suppers, these were for the low-no-income and to socialize them among their peers. I even at one time donated time helping cooking at one church supper. I could do it then, They often drafted volunteers so as to give tehm a hand-up, not   a hand-out.

I always felt the need to give back in return for what i got, and it often had "extra benefits".

Now we don't need to, but MOH and I would like to start finding suppers, church or seniors {a little young on the senior side}, or not, to go to, to develop a good new group of friends. Problem is finding ones we don't have as 'soup kitchen' ones as we are not well off, but can feed ourselves.

Now I/we need to find the dinners that raise money for good casues that arent' $12/plate each for spaghetti for a fundraiser, I dont mind $5 or $6 but more than that, and I could eat at Olive Gardenf for the $12 they want!

I'd donate my time again, but I can't stand all night to cook and/or serve anymore. I used to donate my time for such, but not able to anymore.

The senior center is more for those a tad bit older than MOH and me, They typically want only those 62 and older, as we are just entering into the "senior category"..not everyone agrees with AARP!

New Grill One of the big reasons I wanted the new grill was be cause of Flair Up's. Old grill was terrable about it! This is how I rate the new grill on Flair Up.

 Beef   A

 Pork  A

 Chicken D

 See you all later, Ken

Ken: you rated chicken a "D" for flare-ups? I am assuming you mean it flares up a lot?

did you remove the skin? that should cut WAY down on or eliminate flare-ups totally!

also, another trick is to line the grill grates with heavy duty tin foil with holes sliced through every few spots where the grate openings are, it allows the grease to settle on the foil,  NOT flare the flame!

ANy chicken skin will flare any grill that is a grated grill!

Burgers are easy, jsut get the least fat content you can afford!

I am no grill master, my forte is the kitchen, but I know what wroks for me on my portable mini gas grill!

Check your PMs

Jeffery Details on the 318? Main thing is the year. Over the years the 318 had changed a lot. Not being a LA motor guy I don't know spefic. I do know they started making Swril Port Heads. Your Exhaust manafoilds and Intake may not work? Not sure about the trans either, don't know if they changed the bellhousing bolt patterns. If your Dad can get the Vin it would all so help.

As far as I know the engine we found is 80-84. In 85 the 318 was fitted with roller cams and lifters and fast burn heads. This replacement I'm looking at is a tappet engine and has the old wedge heads. The bell housing should fit properly.

I am "stoopid" with two "o"s on engines, but if it will couple to the trainy and is a same type model {I.E. nto a v-6 instead}does it really matter what year/type it is? Or does one make it better than the previous year's model?

I am assuming that the 318 your father found will work, or all is for naught?

MUST it be a model same year as the van, which, btw, is what year again?

Just asking.

I sometimes I wish I knew more than just how to put oil in, and that it goes when I want it to.

Ps glad your father is willing to install it for you! we'd never raise that much!

Galaxy,

I already made arrangements with JEFF. Money order will be in mail Tues. for double my pledge, He already knows. This may be the only opt. for Him, with prices of used vehicles there.

Maybe If some can come up with a little more for some ''cush'' that would not be a bad Idea.

Evening guys.

They were calling for rain today but it was sunny all day, except for a brief downpour around 10am. So that meant I spent it cutting grass and cleaning up the lawn and also cutting my parents grass. I guess its kind of good as I will be busy with work from Monday-Thursday and then going to the IRL race on Friday,Saturday and Sunday. But was looking forward to working on the railroad today. I dont think I will get a chance to do too much this week. If anything maybe just kicking back when I get home and flipping through MR's or making som to do lists.

Talk to you guys in the morning sometime.

Good Evening!

It has been a busy Sunday! I even missed my big Sunday breakfast this morning, so I´ll go for a Barry-sized burger, with all the works, and an RBF, please!

Jeff - it seems, as if you have a good chance of getting your transportation problem solved. Now let´s hope, that the rest of the car will hold up some more time.

I w*rked on the second wharf building today, doing the planking ans the roof. It´s aready painted in a light blue color, but needs weathering.

Going to get some rest now - CU all tomorrow!

Edit: Looking at the above picture, I found that something just does not look right. Took me a moment to see that the roof overhang on the sides is to short. Correcting this was done in 15 minutes. I have to let it dry thoroughly before a careful sanding job and a dab of paint will disguise where I added to the roof.

RB,

That sounds like a good deal.

Galaxy,

I'll double My pledge. I can send it to Jeff tomorrow. Let Me know what You think.

Take Care! Big Smile

Got a call from my father. We've found a 318 at the local scrap yard. Supposedly in good condition with a ninety day warranty. He says he'll pay for getting it installed provided I buy it. The purchase price is $600. Right now, at this moment I have $50 on hand.
