Ray ... I think I would try it on sample rocks off the layout. ..... Rocks around here are sort of yellowish brown, and that's why I asked about rocks in your area. .... Another thing I have done is simulate moss with a very, very thin layer of green. Again, I would experiment on some scrap rock pieces off the layout. .... Your scene looks so outstanding, however, as it is. So, you really do not need to make any changes.
Galaxy sounded rough. Usually trhe first day or two of a cold is the worst. Sounds like Mrs. Galaxy is very sick too. Hoe it is a cold that goes away quickly.

RAY: YES, a resounding YES on the gray wash! Being roughly the same area as you, they are just TOO CLEAN and WHITE! Maybe some grimey black? WHile some have been "yellowed" there is sill TOO MUCH WHITE that also would/may also havbe been coated in a layer of some "free-range soot" from the steam loco on the tracks below? Even if it was made with Pennsylvania Blue stone, they would have been gray. Or granite would be..well..mottled gray?Dunno.
V8vega: The dentist is a fine fellow. likes me, and I, him, but he is the bane of my existance! I inherited my mother's bad teeth, so I know what you are going through. He did a root canal with a crown that bought me about a year more with that tooth, and then it failed. I have "standing appts" with them as it can take up to 3 months, and often get "preferntial treatment". I have both upper and lower partials.GOod thing I had INs coverage that covered it all, but now other new insurance, will cost me a fortune in copays! See him this friday, I do. Oh goodie!

Garry - thanks for the update on Jeffery. It's good to hear the recovery is going well if too slowly to suit him.
Ray - I agree with the others, I was going to mention the stone retaining wall was awful clean especially for a steam era road. Maybe use some of the same techniques you used on the shop ?
No MRR stuff last night. Got some chores done and then settled in to watch the second UConn game.

Gosh, it´s already afternoon! I was busy drawing up a plan for one of those decks on my layout, including the buildings on it. Quite a task. I think I will have to make some sort of jig to get an even spacing of all the piling. I am not yet done with the drawing and will post it later.
Ray - the vote seems to be unanimous - that stonework is way too clean and bright. I´d tone it down a bit and weather it a little. Maybe some green stuff growing in the cracks and crevices will also help.
Back to the drawing board!

Morning all. Terrible news near me. School stabbing and 20 injured. Supposed to be a 10th grade student at the school. Otherwise, I am decent this morning. Waiting for my call back, but it has only been a full day so I am still positive that I have this job lined up.

Whew - I done it! I finished the side elevation of that deck (pier?). Gives me an idea of what it will look like and I can check and verify the dimensions. Going to be an awful lot of w*rk to scratchbuild this:

Got up a little early this morning and decided it was nice enough outside to do some Springtime chores. That means window washing. So now the attic and 2nd floor are done. A total of 13 double hung windows. Sure glad they tilt in. Tommorow I'll do the first floor. That will be 8 double hung, 3 deadlight windows, 2 doors and 3 storm doors. These big old houses do have a lot of glass. After lunch today, I think I'll go outside and clean up some leaves with the "leaf vac". Tommorow will be the last day the township will be picking up leaf bags until the Fall.
There saying we might hit around 70 degrees this weekend. Sounds good, but with the weather we have been having this year, it might mean 20's on Monday with snow. But I'll keep my fingers crossed. Have a good one...

Yesterday my new food processor and the replacement Coffee maker arrived. Washed the old camping percolator I was using and tried out the new 4 cup Mr. Coffee... Made an excellent brew if might say so!

I figure that Jeffrey will be at the rehab place for a while, so I sent him a card addressed to the hospital yesterday. Most hospitals will forward cards, etc. for a week or so after the patient has left anyway.
Thanks for the comments on the photo I posted last night. I have already done another wash of gray on the wall, and a few other things I know need to be attended to. A member of another forum over accross the street was brutally honest with things he noticed, and this was very, very helpful! He saw a few things I didn't notice. I will post him a thank you this afternoon. He saw 3 of the 4 items I knew about, and added about 5 more... Most are correctable without a lot of effort, and I have already seen to a few of them this morning. Photos tonight, I hope...

There was an aricle in the paper here a few days ago that the growers in Pennsylvania are reporting a very high loss of grape vines due to this past winter. They expect a shortage of grapes to impact their business. I think their worried about this coming fall's harvest.

Hi Tom. Yes, some growers have already stated they may not have a good enough crop this year to even bother harvesting. We will just have to wait and see how the vines come back, I guess. It would impact most wines in two years, BTW as most are held until then for sale.

Evenin' Janie... place is empty. Nobody here fior 6 hours I see. Wonder where everyone is? i need a nice hot cup of decaf to help me unwind.
Spent most all day down cellar in the train room today. Doing a lot of odds and ends for the Blacksmith Shop scene. Made a bunch of changes that have been suggested to me by a few folks. What? photos? Of course! I wonder if the place is empty because everyone is tired of my photos.... Anyway here are a few new ones done tonight.
I darkened the retaining wall (maybe too much soot, I don't know). I may moderate the effect a bit using some ash powder tomorrow... We'll see.
This one I rather like. Needs a few more boxcars on the track to make it look like a full train is going by though...

RAY:Now the retaining wall looks "more correct" in color. BUT NOW I think it needs some "soot" on top the color that is there now! It would have very much settled on the "ledges" of the stones that stick out, I think. Maybe.
And YES, Jeffrey may be there awhile. SO your card should get to him. When I told him he was very well missed here in the diner/forums, he said "apparently".
Richard{rideonroad}: It could mean both! That hte food is edible and "passable" thorugh the system! Our hospitals around here serve ala carte style and restaurant style kinda any-time-you-are-hungry, so it is good food in our hospitals, I didn't ask him what they fed him! could have been Cajun style Hippopotomus dung heaps on a slab of gopher brains bread!

Fortunately for me (touch wood!) I haven't had a cold or the flu for years! However, when I was running a bakery in the 1990's I was so worn out and exhausted from the 16+ hour days that I ended up in the hospital with the flu because I didn't have the strength to stand up for more than a few minutes. We thought that the bakery would lead to riches. Instead it caused me to miss two years of my sons' lives. Thankfully we got out alive with our finances intact.
Enough with the bad memories!

Good morning! Here' in New England we're in that season that Kurt Vonnegut Jr. used to call "Unlocking," or what the folks a bit further north in Maine call "Mud Season." 28 this morning, 61 later today according to the Weather Channel's page for our zip code.
Ah, hospital food. About 20 years ago I went in for rotator cuff surgery, after a disagreement with the mountain on a black diamond ski slope. What do I remember most about the experience? The macaroni and cheese I had for lunch. I was recovering from surgery to repair an injury, so I had no particular dietary requirements, and I ordered mac'n'cheese because I thought it was something they couldn't mess up. I was wrong.

34F again with sunshine. It was 29F when I got up so we should have a good day. Nothing much to report today - went home and caught up on sleep last night so no MRR stuff to report.
Galaxy - hope you get over the creeping crud you got soon. Must be miserable.
Ray - that looks much different (and better to my eyes) with the darker wall. My only quibble now is the top block should probably have more definition (dirt/soot) and as a truck driver, I think the fence is too close to the building, especially if it was there during the horse and wagon era. If you leave it as is you should at least break a couple of rails and lean some posts back. When I went past our last shop the other day, someone had hit the 20ft roll gate and bent it at a 90deg angle. Stuff like that.
Ulrich - I'm no architect, but the buildings look good to me. Is the slope of the back section roof correct for the climate you model?
