Ulrich, I like the first classic one, I think the outside frame locos are neat, but that is about as far as I go with them!

if money is really the object then you know the choice, if it is a close one, then I'd go #1.

How close is close? There is a $ 30 difference between those two - not a lot, but for me quite a lot. I am not yet decided - that difference would buy me an additional car ... Confused

IN & OUT,

Morning Everyone!

Ulrich, from looking at Your new project layout and Era, I would go with the outside frame, seems like it would fit in to me.

Your doing great so far!

Prayers for everyone. Thank God, I've been feeling good.

... I also tend towards this one - I like to watch the motion of those counter weights.

A question to the scenery experts:

I am looking for some input how to model the tide line. Where the rock is still wet, it almost looks black, but wouldn´t there be a greenish hue to the black, coming from algae etc.? Above that line, the rock would have a lighter brown color, coming from dried algae brought there by higher than normal tides.

Unfortunately, our coast is rather flat, so I just can´t go there and take a look myself.

I have a non-train related question?

Does anyone know..I thought I heard years ago-

do electric oven heating elements burn hotter just before they burn out?

I ask because last week I baked a cake came out just on the good side of "burnt".

yesterday I fixed lunch in the oven..set the temp and the timer and it came out nearly burnt. I have this lunch many tiems and never did it get burned. I thought maybe I had set wrong temp.

then last night I put the beef in the glass baking dish, added water and smothered in steak sauce and covered with tin foil. It was in for an hour and I turned it off. MOH was not ready to eat when got home from work, so i left the beef in the "off" oven. I turned off the exhaust fan and sat down. 5 minutes later I smelled burned stuff. so I checked and the baking dish had burned in that hour, even with water added and covered in tin foil! It was barely edible!

The two large burners no longer work adn we need a new stove, just biding time to get the money. But I use the oven A LOT, and if it is burning things, and the element is getting ready to burn out, It will be a problem. It is 31 years old and only a cheap Magic Chef any way.

i thought I heard electric oven elements burn hotter when they get ready to die?

Anybody know?

Good morning!  Clear but cool in New England.  It was in the 30s when I left for work.  These very low temperatures have kept me from seeding the lawn.  We had a rainy weekend, and it looks like there's some more in the forecast, so it's time to think about putting down the seed.  Last year, we had almost no rain and nothing would come up.

My wife Penny and my sister are leaving for Ireland tonight.  They're going to do geneology and graveyards and such.  I'm still working and don't have enough vacation time to join them, and to be honest, I'm not sure it would be much of a vacation with two old ladies with their own agendas.  I'd rather settle down in a pub with a pint, but they'd pack a baloney sandwich and go slogging through a field in the rain.

Good morning all.  It is good to be getting ready for work again.  I think I found a place to spend my future paycheck on-getting a hollow core door to start my home portable layout, or cut lumber to start a module to fit with the rest of the club's modules.  I even have an idea.  It would be at a crossing, two on the same crossing, and a third one a few feet away.  Well,I would get a cheap tractor trailer, and slice it in half and just generally damage it.  Place it at the crossing, add some torn up ground/knocked over crossing gates, etc and poof.  Instant scene, and an easy one to explain why a train is not on that track (That actually happens a lot you know-Myself/the club members usually say to the little kids "They're resting", and to the older ones, "We don't have enough space on the track to run them"),

(My Model Railroad, My Rules)

These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway.  As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).

That's what my sister believes. She has two ovens and they both did that just before the elements went snap, crackle, pop.

Good morning. It's 72° with 93% humidity. The high will be 88° with a fair chance of getting wet. Tornado watch in effect until noon.

Yesterday was blustery weather. Today it looks like tornado weather or there's a city council meeting. Of the two I'll take the tornadoes.

The Home Health nurse will be coming today to change the wound vac dressing. It needs it.

Other than that I have no plans. Probably fire up Starfleet1 and save the Alliance from the Krellan and Zaldron Empires again.

Well, I went  to the CU to do the banking form last wednesday and friday. Now there is money in hte account for bills nad some in my pocket.

Still wobbly as I was out. I passed Firestone and i need the inspection done by wednesday. I also had a left turn signal burn out last week. They had no cars in the parking lot, but one viistor in the waiting chairs, so I passed. i hope i feel upto it tomorrow morning at 7 am when they open to be the first in line.

I had two dry heaves when i got up this morining, MOh heard it and came running. I don't know hwy except that my system is still not up to par. I did eat a breakfast sandwich, but it tasted like cardboard, like what little i have eaten in the last few days. i put on my regular pants and found extra room, so I weighed myself I lost 12 lbs in the last few days. i can afford to lose them, but not that way! i did one dry heave when i got home form teh CU too. NOt good.

I will try to get some more sleep, if not i will do the bedding it needs it.

I don't know what else I will get into today, but probably not much! Still wobbly as I said. My hand was shaking when i filled out teh bank forms.

Jeffrey: That is hwat I thought I understood. I wil be a bit lost without the oven! TIme to bite a bullet, charge the card and get a new stove!

We have a nice day today, sunny/60. Rest of the week through  sunday will be RAiN.

Best wishes for those in the tornadoes who lost home, life nad limb the last few days!

You should only have to replace the element. That's all my sister did on her two.

(bursts through the door and quickly shuts it as if to secure it with my body smoke rising from hair ) Darn Krellan's!!

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and biscuits and gravy please. Thank you.

Rain this afternoon.

CDN Dennis- Yup Cracker Barrel is a restaurant that serves regular food like chicken fried steak, meatloaf, open faced beef, fried chicken etc and they serve breakfast all day. A feature my wife likes the best, though she didn’t Saturday.  I’ve never personally had a bad meal there.

Jimmy- Glad you got the job. So nice to see someone looking for and accepting, a job that is….less than perfect for their desires shall we say. So many anymore are saying “I’m not gonna work at (insert name of place).” They want high paying jobs most people have to work up to, right off the bat. They’d just as soon sit back and collect while they are “looking” for a job.

THEY don’t seem to have issues with getting money and support to “survive”. But then we see folks with REAL issues fighting to get enough to keep a rough shelter and food. We got this backwards.

Ken- That is one happy dog. Probably so lucky and happy to have you be Daddy.

Ulrich- Ordinarily I’d say the regular loco. But, for a narrow gage, dock side like what you are doing, I’d lean towards the outside frame. Don’t ask me why, just a thing.

Galaxy- I can’t say I’ve heard that about the element, but I can’t deny it either. My first guess would be the oven sensor. The thing that tells the oven to shut off or heat up. When they go bad, the oven doesn’t know to turn off because it thinks it still needs to get hotter. Just replaced that on the pizza oven at work a few weeks ago. Though it was gas and they call it a thermocouple, the concept is the same. Set at 450 degrees the oven buried a 600 degree thermometer. Personally, and I know money is more than tight, I’d say a new stove is the best option. The repairs would cost more than a new one. I'm assuming you would have a repairman do the work of course.

Maybe we should put Wal-Mart in charge of our health care system.Whistling

Generator wouldn’t start so I had to remove the carburetor and clean that up. A result, I know, I know... I know what you guys are gonna say and it's true, of my not draining the fuel. Sometimes it comes back to bite me. Hey at least I didn't wait for a power outage to find out. Actually if I had run it last year like I had in the past it may have been fineWhistling, but it actually hadn’t been run in over a year. After I cleaned the carb, got it all put back together and back on the generator, it started on the first pull Yes. I ran it for a few minutes, then shut the fuel off and let it die. Even though it ran ok on the over year old gas, I think I’ll drain it and put in fresh. BUT…it’s supposed to rain today so…..who knows. Depends on if it rains, or storms. Depends on who you listen too. If it rains, I’ll do it in the shed. If it storms….I’ll do it outside.

Welp, best toddle off. Spent a bit getting caught up here so, best go make up for it.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

That could be true. Since teh burners are "plug N Play", i assume the element is too.

But, with the two large burners out of order, and the oven on the fritz, I think it time to replace the whole darn thing. I don't know if the resident mice or voles have chewed wiring for the burners or not, but the new plug n play ones haven't worked either, and I don't know a thing aobut tearing it apart.

A service repair, as TOdd says, probably equal the the cost of just getting a new "cheap" model. MOH, who never cooks, would like gas too, and I would prefer it, there is a nat gas pipe with shutoff there, but it will cost as much as the new gas stove to have the plumbers come and hook it up! I DO NOT trust us to get it right, or to know what parts we need to connect a stove to the pipe that is there!

a cheap electric model, as this one was, is OK. It is 31 years old. well we think original to the trailer, and MOH has been here with it since '95, and I since 2000.

I will have to check HD, Lowes, and Olums {local company} for the cheapest electric replacement.

Tongue Tied

$348, $359 plus cord, tax and probably delivery brings it to aobut $450-$475

Well, if the old one needs that much work then a new one is in order. Try to avoid the glass topped models. The burners don't get as hot as the open coil burners do and you end up ising more power.

Mornin'.....  Uh.... Hmmmm  (looks at watch).  Ahem!  Afternoon everyone!

Zoe, just a refill on the dark roast coffee for the moment.

I've been getting a bunch of odds and ends done that I should have done a few days ago...  Both for the MLK Committee and the NMRA Division.  Have a meeting tomorrow with all the officers to check on where we are at the moment for next years Mortimer Junction Niagra Frontier Region Convention.  Old Mortimer Junction is about 1/4 mile from where the Convention will be held.  Not much left there anymore, but still a few things to be seen.

Sun is trying to shine so far today, but there are a lot of big fluffy white clouds up in the sky as well.  Looks like April will not break last years record for Electric like January, February, and March did.  I should still be a few kWh ahead for 2014 though.

People are busy setting up for the big auction across the street on Wednesday eveing.  I have to go to a Boy Scout District Committee meeting at about the time the auction will be starting.  Hope I will be able to get out of my driveway!

Won't be doing much on the layout today as I have to get photos of each of the Scholarship winners this afternoon and finish the article for the Finger Lakes Crimes...  Ah, Times....

Galaxy, I agree with the others that it is time for a new stove.  After 31 years it is well overdue!  Hope you get to feeling better.

Best get myself moving!

I've got to disagree about the glass-top stoves.  We've had one for years now, and I'd hate to go back to the older style.  I find the burners are just fine.  But, you may have to add in the cost of new pots and pans.  The glass-top burners really need to be in direct contact, so the bases of the pots need to be completely flat.  Older ones that are dented or warped won't work as well.

One thing we've found is that we keep the stovetop clean.  It's very easy to do that - no more removing burners to clean the pans underneath them, and no more replacing the pans when they get to dirty to clean.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Good Evening!

What a day! I am knackered! We spent 5 hours at the Miniatur Wunderland and my friends had me explain every little detail to them. I must have done a good job, as both enjoyed the visit. The amount of detail is just overwhelming and, although it is not a model railroad as we understand this term, it is just a fantastic experience. I am sure, though, that we have not seen all of those little well made scenes - there are just too much of them. Not much has changed since my last visit. Work has started on the Italy section and from what I have learned, it will be stunning. It´ll open to the public next year.

Galaxy - we have a glass to stove and Petra is really happy with it. They are supposed to use actually less energy than the old fashioned steel rings, and are much easier to keep clean. Just make sure that all your pots and pans have a level bottom and that you really kkep the surface clean.

Bear - thanks for the pictures! I see that the coastal rocks have some brown tone to them - I might experiment with that.

I am still not fully decided on the loco, although I tend more and more towards the outside frame version. Tomorrow will be decision day.

Will be calling it a day soon - CU all tomorrow!

You've been fortunate. Maybe the nodels I've seen just don't have really hot burners. Several members of my family and some friends bought glass topped Kenmore and Hotpoint units and they all have the same complaint. The burners aren't hot enough.

Maybe I missed it, but I haven't seen Dennis giving a report on his new car. Hope he & the Mrs. are feeling well enough to have tested it out over the weekend. And don't feel bad about getting use to all the doodads on it. Your not alone. There's like 3 different ways to change radio stations on mine. I'm sure there's other things that I don't even know I have on mine. I figure if I don't know about it by now, I really don't need it.

We had a nice weekend with some railfanning included. Saturday we were at out usual spot on NS & caught 8 trains in 2 to 3 hours. That included the Wabash Heritage unit, which we have seen before.

On Sunday morning, we went to the other side of down and caught 3 CSX on their main line. Leaving there, we headed towards our spot for more NS. On the way, we spotted a NS on the Mon Line with an interesting mixed freight headed toward Conway Yard. We were able to get ahead of it & I got some so-so photos of about 12 plus DODX flat cars with what I think are M2 Bradley fighting vehicles. I haven't seen any military loads around here in a very long time.

I've been thinking about getting a new camera. Although I'm not into photography that much, my Cannon Power Shot leaves a little to be desired. So a step up might be in order. The one that's caught my eye is a Nikon D5300. It comes with 2 lenses and a bunch of other accessories. It's driving my wife nuts because 1 minute I want to get it, & then I change my mind because of the price. She's all in favor of a new one and says she's tired of me complaining when the pictures I take now don't turn out very well. I do see some interesting things when railfanning, but the pictures I get now aren't usually worth posting. This is one of those things that which ever way I decide, it will probably be the wrong choice. Oh well, have a good one...

I don't much care for the glass topped ones. They maybe easier to clean, and friends of ours had one they didn't like nad got a gas model instead.

I also don't care for all this electronic hub-bub the new ones have wih a NASA sized manual to figure out how to set and run! A simple knob and oven thermostat that works is fine for me.

We do have nice new level botttom pans as I finally found the set I wanted at a great price. they are stainless steeel with an aluminum center in the base "for even heat distribution". they DO NOT have "non stick coatings" as they all come off eventually and IF you ever have to scrub them, you will damage them. These; a good old Brillo pad will clean if need be.

I agreee the glass top is easier to clean {I gave up with the oven cleaner trying to get this one clean around the burners-a burnt on spill over is nasty to get off} and the gas ranges look almost easier to clean too. but the plain old riased coil burners will have to do. It comes on the cheapest model, and right now, unless i want to cook on the mini camping stove, ANY new stove will do as cheaply as we can get it.

I have managed to deal with only the two small burners operating, but it is a pain, especially for heat on a larger pan!

I will be happy to have a four-burner stove with a  working oven now!

I have worked up a sweat and did the bedding the dishes and another load of laundry. We each have our own preferfences for bedding nad make cocoons out of them so we are nto good at sharing. So there is really 2 sets of bedding to be washed and chaged each time.

MOH usually is home by now and we often take a mini nao=p, but had to stop at teh FILs. That can be a half hour visit or a 3 hour one. looks like the latter today! Probably because the FIL called me earlier from downtown to tell me about this new computre deal he was getting and asked if we had a working new windows system, I assured him we had win7, and he asked me 3 times if i was sure. He had to replace his computer as: 1} it was too old to hold many programs 2} he had no more room on it for anything and 3} it winXP so ther is no more support for it.

SO I am sure mOH got roped into that if FIL brought it home today. IF nto MOH may be home for all of a half hour before going off to work again. Looks like I will haveto wiat till 5:30 for the homecoming.

One good hting is that today has gone by FAST! I wasn't waiting watching teh clock tick by counting the hours i was not sleeping. I can take one of the two remaining Ambien pills i have which should give me at least 4 hours of sleep as i will see the Dr at noon on Wed and can hopefully get more. Thursday is Mental health and maybe sometime i can get to see the psychiatrist finally. I think I get new refils of psychotropics wed from my GP.

I got a nosey call from the new insurance company. Asking a bunch of questions I had to answer the computer. They may use it to deny coverage on somethings I am afraid. Q's like " do you use a cane,.walker or other device to get aroudn your home" {yes} and "do you ever get depressed?" Of course i do, I am bi-polar! It comes with the territory.

Supposedly they already told Mental health that they don't cover for 6 months for preexisting conditions. I thought with the Affordable Care act they couldn't do that. I still have to find that discalimer in their paperwork. fortunattely the copay sliding scale fee at mental health is only $5. until i am covered. That goes for both therapy and for the Psychiatrist.

I treid to tell them at the hospital that I had changed insurances, but they didn't listen SO when I get the bill I will have to inform them. That all should be coverd as it was "new instance".

I pay enough for the coverage they better be covering stuff!

I did eat lunch, salisbury steak and potatoes.. Not a favorite to have now, but it worked and only half tasted like cardboard.

I fel a little more steady on my feet now.

Well, at 3:09 I guess I won't see MOH until dinner..no time now about time to go get the mail.

Later

Maybe I missed it, but I haven't seen Dennis giving a report on his new car. Hope he & the Mrs. are feeling well enough to have tested it out over the weekend. And don't feel bad about getting use to all the doodads on it. Your not alone. There's like 3 different ways to change radio stations on mine. I'm sure there's other things that I don't even know I have on mine. I figure if I don't know about it by now, I really don't need it.

The new 2014 car has  the satellite radio and the regular radio in it all in one unit. AN 11 year old had to show MOH how to operate the satellite part! I have no clue but have only been in it once.

The satellite company already called wanting to sign us up for the pay portion of the satellite. The guy would NOT take NO for an answer,s o MOH finally hung up on him after explaining 3 times IF and ONLY IF we wanted it to continue after the three months free, WE would CALL THEM!

MOH is really only happy with regular free radio! at leat as long as regular FM "free" radio is around!

Satellite may be great for long trips, but if we go on a long trip as you  supposedly don't have to change stations,, we usually dont have the radio going as we have the GPS to listen to and we can talk to each other and not over the radio. And as of yet, amy long trips will still be in the minivan. It is sans any fancy satellite radio.

WE may take the new car out teh cemetary to visit MIL to try it out on long trip and save on gas, but for vacation type trips, it will still be the space and cargo capacity of the mininvan we will want.

Just a Thought! Been doing it for years, even my boat that was stored for the winter, with a 350 chevy engine in it, USE Sta-bil in your gas tanks, lawm mowers, garden tractors, weed wackers, you name it, it works, but You have to put it in, for it to do so.

For the amount of money involved it's a lot cheaper than throwing the gas out at today's prices.

Prayers For All, even if you don't need them.

I sometimes have to wonder what people do with all their hard disk space. Do they actually save all that stuff they download? Don't they move anything to DVD's or flash memory cards? I'm still using an 80gb drive I bought back early in the last decade and still have space on it. Every so often I go through what's on it and determine what I want to save and what can go. Depending on the size what I want to keep goes on flash memory cards or DVD's. The stuff that can go gets deleted as well as the other stuff which by now has been backed up as described before. That leaves lots of spece for anything I might want to put there. Even the software for my //e is backed up on flash memory cards (SD cards in this case) and they're all backed up on a DVD as well. As for getting a new computer because the OS is out of date, get an upgrade. Only reason I have this HP is because my old computer finally bit the dust. If I'd known then what I know now about Windows 8 I would've gotten the Acer system that had Windows 7. My HP has a 1tb drive and I've barely touched the space on it.

Jeffrey, I don't know what he's got, but it is about 10  or even 12 years old. The MIl could still get around then but wasn't so interested in it.

We suggested he put some stuff, like financial stuff on thumb drives. He has no idea what a thumb drive is! He stil has a hard floppy dirve!

Yes, I think everything he ever did was  on that computer, If he is smart, he will take it all to a computer place and have them transfer the hard drive for him.

There are a few documents we have on here, but nothing that important that we have to keep everything!

We have plenty of space for the programs we do run, and plenty more. In fact it needs to be "cleaned up again" {we can't do it-dont know how} but until MOH gets the working tablet for work back, we cannot be without it for homework that has to be done for every client every day for work.

Now with a new computer, IF we have to take it in, MOH can go use the FILs computer, as it stands now his current one would not hold the program for work MOH needs.

we have gobs of space, more than we will ever need, but less than you have apparently. We go t the "Second up from the bottom basic computer".

Home Health nurse came and changed the dressing on my foot. It needed it too. The filter canister on the vac unit was almost full.

Received a serial printer cable in the mail today. It's set up to connect an Apple ImageWriter2 printer to an Apple Super Serial II card. Now I just need the printer and the DIP switch settings for the SSC2. I'm working on getting a working ImageWriter2 real cheap. It's supposed to have a new ribbon cartridge with it.

Nothing else going on today other than that I'm watching 'The Alamo'. Nope, not the new one. The 1960 version.

Pizza would be nice-NO ANCHOVIES! Well today was actually pretty good for work.  I had about 6 hours today, 6 tomorrow, and 6 on Thursday, so about 18 hours to start with, but I will take it.  It was SO MUCH BETTER THAN UPS!

I haven't seen Dennis giving a report on his new car

OK here's the car report.... I've only put 52 km on it so not so much to report. I drives more that a car than a SUV is my first impression. Seems to ride nicely. Doesn't need a key to start it, just push the button on the dash as long as you've got the fob in your pocket.

Other than that.... don't know. Been too busy taking care of MOH who finally agreed to go to the Dr. this morning after I spent the last 4 days nagging at her. She can be so bone headed about going to see the Dr.

Sooo of course it's now not just a cold but an acute sinus infection AND the cold has gone into her chest. Antibiotics for the sinus infection and some super duper narcotic cough syrup for her borderline pmenonia.

Me, I'm pretty much back to my normal abnormal self so that's a blessing given MOH. If she hasen't improved by Wed, it's back to the Dr. for her and she can argue all she likes.

Oh yeh, one other thing about the new SUV, it's RED.

Cheers all

Dennis
