What's your dream job? What jobs are you applying to? What kind of educational background do you have? What other jobs have you had, even stuff like lifeguarding or mowing lawns?
These are hard times. We need to be realistic about what we can do, but at the same we still need to keep reaching for the stars.
Who do you know who works somewhere you might like to work? A long time ago, using "connections" was looked down upon, even though it was used all the time. Nowadays, exactly the same process is called "networking" and it is highly recommended by job search professionals. Don't be afraid to ask your uncle or neighbor for a name and phone number. It's also called "taking the initiative" and often causes the Job Gods to look favorably upon you.

Still working the 11 hour days , 6 days a week, but I'm getting used to it now. I've learned to cope. It has slowed down my modeling and my on-line life, but the paycheck is nice.

Jimmy, truer words were never spoken. The county employment office here dusted of my Resume, spiffed it up, and hooked me up with a career councellor which really helped alot. Best of luck in your search.

Went to dinner with the family tonight. Besides myself there were my niece and her husband, my sister and her husband, my father and stepmother and several friends. I had chicken, beef and shrimp fajitas and a diet Dr Pepper.After the computer and decoder work I did today I wonder what I can do tomorrow as an encore. Lots of nothing? Sounds good to me. Been pretty busy with work and getting ready for the end of the semester in my college classes. I love how some instructors don't give you some assignments until a few days before the semester ends...
I did go to the MRR club tonight, I finished weighting the club cars to NMRA specs. I can safely say I'm glad I don't have any of the athearn 40' ice reefers. Those things are kind of a pain to take apart.
Jimmy, I too am frustrated with the job search. I have a low-end job, but I have had a degree in mechanical design and technical illustration (fancy wording for drafter, I can do both CAD and board) for about 2 years now. Unfortunately in this economy, not many spots are available. The ones that are are usually looking for experience. I'm going back to school for IT... I'm about to take a 2nd job over the summer to get my foot in at the comissary on base...
Ken, Good to see you in the diner. Sorry to hear about Shaddy, but at least you found Sparkie. Sparkie at least doesn't take the food when you are looking. Delilah (my german shepard/lab puppy) will take food or other things in front of you when you're looking, although she is getting better about it. She's swiped a bagel from my dad before, and she's swiped a screwdriver from me a few days ago...

I'm finding that the motor control isn't as good as others, and they seem to be prone to failing (you did see where I had like 3 or 4 go bad in short order for no reason?). I'm replacing them with either TCS or Lenz decoders. For a budget, I think the multi-packs of NCE decoders are much better than the digitrax...

Sorry, I've just had a day from heck. First, had another day of worthless applications. Next, I had to miss Springsteen tonight because I couldn't afford it. Third, problems at home, and finally I got kicked out of my band for not being "good enough"...so yeah, if I could use one of those Men In Black memory erasers on today, I would in a heartbeat. I guess I will try more entry posiiton job applications tomorrow.

I've heard the horror stories about them. Haven't had any gop bad on me. I have heard of some people storing them in plastic bags. Big no-no on that. Never had an NCE decoder fail unless I failed to install it right I have been replaceing the last few Digitrax units as they expire with NCE decoders. Especially since NCE will take my "off brand" decoders and replace them with comparable NCE decoders for 10 bucks each plus 2 bucks postage. I usually wait til I get 3 or 4 saved up. Almost all my Digitrax and all of my TCS decoders have gone this way. Plus a few ebay "junkers" that had fried decoders. I have also lately had a bumper crop of fried decoders brought to me for repair. I replace the decoder with new and toss the offending decoder in a drawer for later "recycling".
But like I said, different strokes.
Oh and Jeff? If plastic bags are so evil,why do most of the manufacturers sell them in plastic bags??
Got new batteries in my watch (worse than installing sound in n scale locos) so its off to bed. 5:30 comes early.

Garry - scenery is actaully the part of MRRing I like best, but painting something does not belong into that category. I was more into the "Crafts" part in my "Arts & Crafts" classes in my school days. I seem to be allergic against brushes ... Petra´s great grandfather was a professional artist to some reknown in his days, and she has inherited some of his talent. She does wonders in water colors! Maybe I´ll be able to persuade her to paint the background for me. Would make the layout a little bit hers as well!

Jimmy - hang in there! I have turned in over 2,000 job applications in the past 5 years, each one accompanied with hopes and a prayer. None of them resulted in a job - I am too old and way too qualified. I am sure there is a good job, just waiting for you., it only takes time and patience!

I got a little wiser this morning:

I sketched out the piers on the layout, only to find out that both would not fit the way I had planned them
I had to downsize them a little, but I don´t think it´s much of a loss. See for yourself:
I "plan" to start the construction of them coming weekend, providing my friend lets me use his workshop. It´ll be going to be a dusty affair, cutting all the pilings out of 8 mm wooden rods.
Good morning. It's 57°F with 100% humidity. The high will be 85°F with some clouds and a southeast breeze.A few things I'm expecting to happen today. A visit from the Home Health nurse, Mr Raintree to come and pick up his Apple IIc computer on his way home from work and I'm supposed to be having lunch at my fathers place today.Looks like I'm one of a very few people in this area who repair these old Apple II series machines. I think there's even someone who fixes the really old Tandy's, before they went IBM compatible. The computer shop in town won't touch these old things. No readily available parts base. I get plenty of parts from old junk Apple II systems people bring me just to get them out of the shed, storeroom or attic. Sometimes I find one that's in fair shape and fix it and add it to my collection. They're not new but used parts are better than no parts and I clearly state that I use salvaged (used) parts. That's all you can get for these anymore.The Home Health nurse will be changing out the wound vac dressing. Good thing too. The seal failed around the toes early this morning and tripped an alarm on the unit that woke me up. It took only a few minutes to fix and the vac was back in operation. I just had to cut off the bad piece of film and replace it with a new piece. Nothing to it.Lunch today is supposed to be red beans, rice, onions and cornbread. Good stuff.Right now I'm keeping an eye on an auction for a computer part I've been looking for. It ends later this morning. If the price is still low toward the end I'll slip in a higher bid at the last minute and see if I can grab it. I may get a real bargain. Of course I could get a worthless dud too.Other than that there's not much going on today.
Evening all, ULRICH! It's great to see a nice little railroad developing in your home. I too am not a fan of backdrops. I plan on finding some photo backdrops, but if unsuccessful will simply go with a plain blue backdrop.
Got my old man to grab a new Stanley surform shaver for me today as he had the day off. I forgot how good these are!
Getting the mountains and what not shaped pretty well now. Will probably get it all sorted friday as it's Anzac Day, so once I return from the dawn service (it's to remember all who've fought and perished serving Oz/NZ) I'll get the shaping finished off and start applying the hydrocal and plaster to give the final shapes. Saturday I intend on heading over to the "good" model train store on the other side of town (60km round trip!) to grab a few scenery things and a few switches...and probably a few freight cars, and you never know maybe a loco

Today my wonderful wife, Shelley, has her birthday. There will be a neighborhood celebration for my Main Squeeze this evening. Actually, we are going to the same place where she earned the title, Main Squeeze, for dinner. Some of you may recall, a couple of years ago, she had a choking accident, and I used the Heimlich method to restore her breathing. I doubt that will ever happen again.
It's birthday week. One of my sisters had a birthday yesterday. My cousin has one in two days (My cousin is like a sister because she moved into our house when her parents died when she was about 12 years old.)
Ulrich .... I bet you can do well painting when you get inspired to do it. Meanwhile, that is a good idea to have Petra paint for you.
On my railroad, I'm still having problems with the 2-10-2.

Rats - I just ruined a $ 7 Caboose Industries high level switch stand. I assembled it and test installed. When trying to throw the switch, some little pin broke off, not to be repaired.
I am not going to touch anything for the rest of the day.

Good morning! Kind of damp and drizzling, with temperatures in the mid-50s.
My GG-1 arrived last night, but it was after I'd already left for hockey. Long day for the UPS driver. It was reported "out for delivery" at 7:40 AM, and didn't get delivered until 8:04 PM. When I got home, it was almost midnight, but I unpacked the box and put the engine on the tracks. Then I went to bed. I didn't even power on the layout, but I know I've got something to look forward to tonight.

This really isn´t my day today! Looked for track spikes (code 100 rail) and there is no source for them in Germany! I need them for the track on those piers! All I can get here is track nails, which I have plenty of from various different layout projects of the past.
