Good Morning!

It is bitter cold outside, 14 F! No more snow though, but we expect a lot to come tomorrow. All of Germany is covered with a layer of that white stuff, from just a couple of inches (in my neck of the woods) up to a couple of feet. As much as I like to see it, it is a big hassle when you have to drive to places.

We will start to my parents in about an hour, hoping the roads are all cleared by that time. It is a little over 100 miles to go, which normally takes an hour and a half. Won´t be making this today. As my Mom still does not feel up to speed (what speed at the age of 84?), we will be staying only a couple of hours before we hit the road again. I´d like to have covered most of the distance before it´s turning dark again. I find driving at night with snow and ice not really thrilling.

Bama - it totally had escaped my memory that you are the proud father of three kids now. Good job!

Jeremy - a belated Happy B-Day. Gosh, you´re still a young one!

Well, CU later -. when we are back!

HAve a good one

Good evening everyone.  Just got back home from our church Christmas party, it was a blast as always.  Just relaxing a little before heading off to bed so I can be all rested and refreshed for w**k tomorrow.  I think that on Tuesday night and Wednesday I'm going to tinker with some MRR stuff.  BTW, I'm still trying to find a way t get the motor and axles connected on the Dash-8 that I have.  I'm sure that I'll figure something out, up to and including finding all the components on the bay and ordering them.

Welp, its sleepy time for this kid,  goodnight all!

Saw an old Winnebago RV today that had to be at least as old as the 1971 Dodge Pace Arrow I used to have. I thought from the sound of this Winnebago that it must have a Dodge engine in it. I was right. The owner said it had a 360. My old one had a 318 and got eight miles to the gallon. His RV was the same length so I guessed it was getting between six and eight. He said seven.

Stopped at the pharmacy today to pick up a new med that's supposed to replace one of mine. It was supposed to be ready for me to pick up, no paper work or red tape. RIGHT!! Found out it needs a physicians approval. A physician prescribed it! How much danged approval do they need?! I have an appointment to see the doc on Monday so I'll hash it out with him then.

Did a little work on the older of my two Atlas FP7's today. There was a clicking sound coming from it that sounded to me like a wire tapping against something. I was right. It has an Athearn blue box motor with Athearn spline drive shafts. One of the slots in a spline section was picking at a wire. I bent the wire out of the way and all was good again.

Time to call it a night. I'll see y'all again tomorrow.

Evenin',

Janie could I have a refill on the decaf please?

I think I have everything ready for the RIT Show tomorrow...  I sure hope!  Have a couple things to pout in the car on my way out in the morning.

Probably won't have time to say hi in here, but may have a few photos of the show (and if I can the new wheels...)

Have a good night, and my prayers to all in need!

Evening All,

Spent several hours working on the layout today. I posted photos on WPF of my progress. I am doing all my track testing with my M-1b. It is my most track sensitive loco that I have.

All next week the temps here are in the mid 80's and my schedule is Mon-Tue-Wed instead of my normal schedule. Tomorrow is our club Christmas get together.

Pearl Harbor day always has meaning for me because of being a sailor and being stationed in Pearl for 14 years on subs and shore duty.

Jerry- Saying prayers for your wife.

Ken- Glad your toe is still doing well.

Garry- You can almost hear your cat think "What is that thing"Laugh

Ray- Have fun driving the  Prius.

Jeremy B- Hope you feel better and Happy BirthdayHappy B-DayCake

CN Charlie- I work with a guy originally from Calgary. We were talking yesterday about the temps and snow fall up your way.

Todd- You are right. When Mama is not happy, nobody is happy.

Ulrich- I am praying for your family.

Evenin' folks!

Chloe, Ill have a Hot Roast Beef Sandich, French Fries, and a decaf.  Please and thank you Ma'am.

Been a completely squirrelly  day here... Had a meeting at the Boy Scout Office about the Pack not rechartering this morning.  That had been discussed pretty thoroughly before I got to the meeting and I was 10 minutes early.  The discussion turned to the new Venture Crew which is run by the same group of leaders.  Discussion went well and the District Executive and I will go into the community early in January to see if we can start getting more high School kids interested in the program.  I figured out late last night that I had left my old Canon Digital Rebel in the Yaris when I traded it in...  Called the dealership and talked to the salesman.  He called back and left a message for me that he has the camera and to let him know when I want to pick it up.

Then I tried to sort out the lost lien release for the pickup.  Had an idea that the insurance people might have a copy in the insurance folder.  They got out the folder and...  Nope, not there.  I finally went online to the site where Chrysler Credit has a way to get a copy of the piece of paper for a price ($23).  You can't access the site with Firefox, and you can't access it with Safari!  So I called the number at the website (after making sure it was the same as the one given to me by the Dodge Dealer) and after playing with the buttons on the phone I finally got to speak with a human being.  At least she sounded somewhat like a human being but was whispering into the phone very quietly.  I asked her to speak up and turned up the ears all the way.  After asking her to repeat almost everything 4 or 5 times we finally got all the info and proof that I am indeed the deaf music teacher who owns the truck.  She made me cross my heart, say Scouts Honor, and a few other things I mumbled under my breath, but the lien release form should be arriving at my house sometime next week.  This now cost me $28...  Why the difference?  I actually talked with a human being!  I did a bit of grumbling about their antiquated system online system but OKed them to snail mailing the document.

Todd, the plug in Prius has about an 11 mile range using just electric.  Then it just goes to hybrid mode.  It works as sort an average.  If your speed is over 62 miles an hour, the gas engine will kick on and assist the electric system.  I don't think you can delay the use of the electric mode for the city.  But if the battery still has a certain amount of power left, yes it will drive under 62mph on only electric.  Consider it supposedly has a 540 mile range using both the battery charged fully and a full tank of gas (10.6 gallons).  I drove all over Geneva today running errands, and the electric ranged dropped from the full charge(11.2 miles) down to 5.4 miles.  I did use a small amount of gas as well because the engine starts up to warm up the catalytic converter and do some internal diagnostics at start-up.  However, it shuts back down when it is up to temperature and it is not being called upon to help.  The gas tank still reads full, BTW. Smile, Wink & Grin  BTW, the 3.5 gallons twice a year is just to keep the tank of gas in usable condition.  I will be using quite a bit more than that amount I am sure....

Well, I see dinner has arrived, so I will be occupied filling my face for a bit.

Later!

mine do, in fact my SP&S Alco RS1 was doing it this morning. I'm not sure if you guys are aware but I'll share it anyways, in an article in the previous N scale article about track cleaning cars and stuff like that the fellow who wrote it found out from a friend that tracks get dirty from the arcing electricity and DCC is always full voltage so it gets a lot dirtier. I run DC but my tracks are in need of a good cleaning, though I cleaned them yesterday. fire up the'15 I'm gonna go clean some tracks.

oops forgot Happy birthday Jeremy, shall I sing to you the Great wolf lodge birthday song or do you pass? Cake

How many have arcs or sparks chasing their locos wheels? I used to. It happened no matter how much I cleaned the track. In 2006 I GLEAMed all my track and no more arcs chasing the wheels. The only time I've seen them since was after I tore up half the layout and put new track down in the configuration I have now. I GLEAMed the new track and you guessed it, no more sparks. I haven't had to clean it since either except for a light wipe with a dry cloth if the trains hadn't been run in quite a while.

Something my father said he was going to do today was get a reel mower working again. How many of you remember those things! Bet you remember the blisters too! It's been sitting out in the machine shop for years and still looks fairly new. It has yet to cut a single blade of grass! My mother bought it many years ago because it had the word 'Collectible' attached to it. He's not cleaning it up to use or sell. He's going to give it away to a couple he knows as a wedding present. As good a way to get rid of something as any I guess.

LSWrr

Starting January 1st they will be taxing me for rain fall.  The county will measure the square footage of my roof and driveway then calculate how much rainfall those two areas receive every 3 months then charge me appropriately. Fresh air is still tax free until they can determine how to measure my usage.

Lee, I already pay for AIR!!! I have an oxygen Generator and there is a charge for it's monthly usage!!!

went to the CU. It is rainy, chilly, slippery-ish and miserable, but Thank Goodness, it isn't SNOW!!!

Now I rest, though I have to call the bank for the Kia loan and request another payment book. SInce I am a few months AHEAD on payments, I am out of coupons a few months early,s o I need the follow-up coupon book a few months earlier!!

JEREMY- Happy early Birthday! Happy B-Day Cake Gift

Good Afternoon!

Been watching some old movies from the 1940´s and 1950´s earlier on. Gosh, were the girls in those days pretty! But why is it that so many young women nowadays take utmost care in making them look as ugly as possible? I don´t understand the world anymore Whistling

A few moments ago the phone rang. News about my sister. It is now for sure, that she won´t be able to return to he "normal" life, living all by herself in that apartment of hers. She was supposed to stay in that clinic until mid of January, but now she will be released in a weeks time. I now have the joy of finding a place in a nursing facility for her. If that lady lawyer and caretaker of hers had called an hour earlier, I could have get started on that today. I have to wait until Monday to start ringing up various places. Time´s running short.

We´ll be heading to my parents´ place tomorrow, My Mom isn´t feeling too well today, so we had to postpone that trip. In a way I am looking forward to this visit, but in another way, I am not. There are quite a few of us who have a very recent experience in how stubborn ou elders can be.

Might drop by a little later on again.

Good Morning ......... Coffee and a blueberry muffin, please.

Time to remember Pearl Harbor. Pray for Peace. There still are bad guys out there.

Bama! ....... Great to see you! ..... Thanks for the brief update. Feel free to fill in the details. From what I can tell, you have been blessed in 2012.

Ulrich ......... Tell your Dad "Happy Birthday" from the DIners! Happy B-Day

Todd ..... Sounds like it is good Lowe's can get the dryer. A very good thing!

Lee ........ What? A rain tax? ..... Is that for real?

Ken .... We tried to take movies last night of the cat and the train. Of course she would not do the routine for the camera, but we did get a cute movie anyhow. If I figure out some of the technology, I will post it.

CN Charlie ....... I see the cold front will move down into mid-USA, and it will cool here in a few days. Nothing super frigid as you described. We could play golf here only a coupld of days ago, but rain is here now.

With the model railroad, I weathered 10 more freight cars yesterday. 4 boxcars. 6 coal hoppers.

Last week I fixed a P-1000 F3B. The motor bushes are too close to the frame on these locomotives, and this one had a short circuit because of that. (Manufacturer's stupid design) A small amount of tape solved the problem. Next, I installed a decoder that works except for its light functions. Of course B-units have no lights, and that's a good use for that decoder.

The B-unit is now in this consist.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and some ham and eggs please. Over easy… oh, and some fried potatoes please. Thank you.

(gumble) Dad blamed Christmas cards.Grumpy

Jerry- Good to hear from you, but not under these circumstances. You bet Sallies in our prayers, she never stopped being in them. You too. Take care.

Ray- Surprise THREE AND a half GALLONS!!!! Do the MATH man. That works out to 7 gallons a YEAR! Oh well then for crying out LOUD I’d take that gas guzzler back! No seriously. Sounds perfect for close runs and things like that. Do you have like a gas only mode? Not when the batteries get low, but by you're choosing even if the batteries are charged. For instance, if we were to drive the highway to Springfield (roughly 9 miles), could we run gas engine and not the electric, then when in Springfield kick in the electric part. In town, THAT’s where the gas guzzling is. Also, what I meant by “what do you do?” is what kind of plug in does it have. The electrics that I’ve seen, and it’s been a while, have some big special looking plug. I’d think a good heavy regular plug would do great. Then you could run an extension cord to your neighbors and…..um…..anyway…um…yah. You have a special circuit, but do you have to have a special design plug.  Oh and if you do, I’m dying to know……did it come with the car, or do you have to buy it separate. Laugh

Sorry about all the Hybrid questions guys. Kinda curious. Just about out of them. I think they are a good thing and electric can be powerful and fast.  I know the laws of whatever where you can’t make more energy than you use, but it sure seems to me, you could surely make a alternator/generator to charge the batteries and once it goes charge and run the car. I mean we can put a computer in a phone, and sell tastey spring roll wrappers that make it not even worth making at home…why not?

Bama- Good to see you’re still kickin! Congrats on the stress relief on the job front.

MononJim- That’s interesting. Wonder if the ships that were attacked at Pearl, got to lead that. Call it the Battle of Revenge. "Remember ME???!!!"

Lee- sorry about the rainfall tax, but you know it’s just a precursor to the Impact On World Environment tax from the department of soil services to take effect in June. Also knwn as the "I Owe" tax. They will use the measurements they got from the rainfall tax and calculate how much ground surface you’ve blocked so vegetation cannot grow. Then they figure what that impact to the environment is, adjust it through the county multiplier to bring it up if they want more money, and charge you accordingy. There is a movement to have the driveways with weed growing out of them to apply for a deduction, but it's like a two page calculation so most won't even mess with it. Besides, it's a deductiona and that depends on how the tax things go in Washington.

Welp, gotta phone call from Lowe’s last night. Can’t get the dryer…..hahaLaugh. No not really, if that were true it would be on the National news about some psycho woman attacking a local Lowe’s store and Ulrich would have said “yah I heard that. No, I mean I literally heard that. Sounded like thunder in the distance.” IndifferentYup, she’d be that loud. Said it was on the truck to be unloaded last night and will be available for pick up this morningThumbs Up. A happy woman is a happy life. I guess she’s been calling them every day since Saturday when they said it could be another ten days at least. She now claims it was her that got it hear faster. “See?” she says “you’ve got to keep on these people. No way was I gonna wait 20 days for my dryer.” “you will if you want it” I THOUGHT, without saying out loud.

NOW she says…..”I don’t think they will fit.”

I have yet to respond.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Jeff, that’s good news (Wednesday) about your mom opening her eyes, that’s a good start.  Did they ever figure out what happened??

I haven't heard anything about it.

Good morning. It's 52° with 100% humidity and dense fog. It'll be partly cloudy with a high of 72°.

Fog is so thick you can almost cut it with a knife. My thinking seems to be a bit foggy too. Having trouble concentrating on anything. It's certainly not from lack of sleep. I went to sleep yesterday about 2pm and woke up about 5am. Well hopefully I'll be able to think clearly soon. A look ahead at the weather shows rain for the weekend. No plans for today.

Good Morning all,

V8Vega, we have 5 days of rain in the forecast with a high of a blistering 48 degrees then day 6 it will snow with a high of a sweltering 32 degrees.  Enjoy your shorts weather, LOL.

JeremyB, I was down and out yesterday with a cold, I wish you luck in avoiding it!

Starting January 1st they will be taxing me for rain fall.  The county will measure the square footage of my roof and driveway then calculate how much rainfall those two areas receive every 3 months then charge me appropriately. Morning all.  glad to see everyone up, hale, and hearty.  I think I'm going to have an order of biscuits and gravy, side of sausage, and a large glass of chocolate milk to wash it down.  Today is the day that brought the United States officially into World War II with the Japanese attack on the US Navy installation at Pearl Harbor and coinciding attack at Hickam Army Air Base.  My grandfather on my mom's side was actually at Pearl that fateful morning as an MP and was on duty when the attack started.  May we never forget that act of aggression, and remember to be forever watchful.

Ulrich, they are all doing fine.  Heather is 5 now and in kindergarten, Mikayla is 3 and, well, being a 3 year old, and Michael is a healthy 8 months old attempting to stand on his own and furniture surfing (holding onto furniture and walking that way for balance).

Today is going to be a fun day for me, first I have w**k, but that's all right because I really love where I'm at (so much so that my boss thinks I'm on something and keeps saying he's going to get me drug tested because no one should be that happy while w**king).  After that, its rush home, do the three S's (stuff, shower, shave) then spruce up for our church Christmas party tonight.  Of course after that its come home and crawl in bed so I can go to w**k on Saturday.

Well, I'm going to mosey along here, got a few more things to check out before I get myself ready to head out the door for another exciting day working on people's vehicles.

Morning all.

Here's today's Pearl Harbor Fun Fact: Of the eight US battleships present during the Japanese attack, only five were actually sunk. Of those five, three were later raised and eventually put back into action. So six of the eight old battleagons (they were all WWI-vintage and obsolescent at the time) actually survived the war. What's more, some of the survivors, which had been modernized after the attack, participated in histoy's last battleship-on-battleship engagement, defeating a Japanses force in the Phillipines campaign.

Morning Coffee with Friends in the diner!

GOOD MORNING!!

Today is the day of "this Day shall live in infamy" anniversary, December 7th, 2012!! {HOPEFULLY today will be a better day!}

Only 15 more days till the world ends according to the Mayans!!!

In the same military vein {thanks for your service}, and in

looking for MRRing bargains on the locos we want, we often look for "more bang for our buck", so:

Meaning: More for your money

Origin:

Generals and political leaders have argued over the costs of the military since Adam was a lad. Their conversations have probably not changed much:

General: "Caesar/My Liege/Mr President, we need more triremes/cannons/nuclear weapons."     Emperor/King/President:     "The people need more olives/bread/iPads. Can't you manage with what you've got?"

Dwight D. Eisenhower faced something of a dilemma in 1953. He was a military man to his socks and was inclined to augment defence  in the face of the perceived 'reds under the bed' threat, but he was also a Republican US president and, as such, politically wedded to cutting state spending. His solution was simple - increase the armed forces but decrease their budget. In ordinary circumstances that circle would be difficult to square. The solution that the US Joint Chiefs of Staff came up with, which they titled the 'New Look', was a policy of using nuclear weapons in any conflict bigger than what they called 'a brush-fire war'. That allowed them to radically reduce the numbers of servicemen and replace them with the comparatively inexpensive atomic bombs.

All of the above was described in a story in The Winona Republican Heraldon 21st December 1953. The story also reports Admiral Arthur Radford as describing the policy as the 'bigger bang for your buck' theory. This was  an adaptation of Pepsi-Cola's 'More Bounce to the Ounce' slogan, which was introduced in 1950.

Most sources credit US Defense Secretary Charles Wilson as the source of the expression 'a bigger bang for your buck'. These invariably point to him having used the phrase in 1954. Wilson could be the person who coined the phrase but 1954 is clearly too late and, until a pre-December 1953 source is found, the phrase has to be logged as 'coined by Anonymous'.

The current form of the phrase, in which  has lost its nuclear connotations, is 'more bang for your buck'.

Just in passing, I ought to mention that a theory that this phrase originated as a reference to prostitution is  suggested by some. There's no truth whatever in that notion.

The prayer candles will be lit all day for those in need Angel

Have a GREAT day!

Good Morning!

Friday, December 7th, 2012

To this date

- 177 years ago: Grand opening of the first railroad line between Nuremberg and Fuerth in the Kingdom of Bavaria.

- 86 years ago: My Dad was born.

71 years ago: The "Day of Infamy" - Japanese Imperial Forces raid Pearl Harbor.

Chloe, lots of coffee, please. I did not sleep well. Something kept me awake last night. Some critter moved into the attic, making a heck of a noise. I guess it´s one of these:

and not this one:

(That´s a "Marder" tank).

Bama - good to see you´re back! How are the little ones?

Jeff - continuing prayers for your Mom!

The night´s been utterly cold, but no more snow. Probably to cold for it at 20 F! That´s the coldest night ever recoded at this time of the year for our neck of the woods. The weather guessers are predicting lots of that white stuff to come down in the next days. I hope we can make it to my parent´s place.

Have a good day!

Good evening all.  Long time no see, but alas, I've returned.  Lots have happened around my neck of the woods, some good, some bad.  Really too much to say easily here, so I'll leave it at that, but I will say that I'm now working at a different job, which is a plus because its better pay, much, much less stress, and a better working schedule for me.

I haven't been able to do a whole lot of MRR'ing in the past few months (I think it was march-ish last time I was in here), but I do intend to get back into it.  So far, I've been cataloging industries along the CSX Dothan Subdivision, so that I can figure out what all I'm going to need (other than a whole heap of room!)  My thoughts and prayers have been with all y'all during my absence and I'm glad to have gotten back!

I think I'll have a RBF in celebration, then off to bed for me as I have to be up at 0530 to get Heather (whom is now 5 and in kindergarten) up and on the bus to school by 0600.

Goodnight, sleep tight, and y'all don't let the bed bugs bite!
