Galaxy - whatever I have given, I did it not because I was expecting to be repaid. I am just worn out, tired. Petra´s complaining that there is hardly a smile on my face these days.
Sir Madog I did not sleep well last night, just too many "heavy" thoughts in my head. I am really worried about my parents´ well being, yet there is nothing I can do. All my life I was the one to lend a helping hand for the family. When my older brother was out of a job, I paid his rent for nearly a year. When Petra´s grandfather died, her grandmother was left with a pension that would not sustain her life - so I chipped in and topped it off for nearly 10 years. When my MIL´s car broke down and she could not afford to buy one, I bought it for her and when my BIL`s business ailed, I paid his food bills. But why isn´t anybody around when I need help? I know I should not be having these thoughts, but somehow I feel wasted right now. I wish there´d be someone around to share the burden with Petra and me. My brother never calls. He just bought a new house (paid it in cash!), but I would not even know his address, if my father had not given it to me. He never calls, never asks how we are doing. Sorry for ranting, I didn´t mean to. It´s just that I am tired, doggone tired.

I can empathise with you.
Ulrich, Life isn't fair. At least that is what my father told me.
I know n for a long time I am not the favorite child.
What I did or didn't do to not be a favorite child...I, who visits once a week, who helps when he has medical needs, run him to Doctors, and I who will be the one to help dad until the time comes for him to go to a home, I, who runs for his pharmacy needs, and I, who am, is, was, are, and were and always be there for him...I am "chopped liver" {there is a phrase I will have to look up}. I recently asked for some money and I got flatly turned down, while he pours tens of thousands into my brother's affairs. My brother will bankrupt him!
It isn't so much the money aspect, but rather how I am treated that way that makes me upset. But I can do nil about it. neither can you.
My brother did little to help me out ever, and now I am doing things for him which he has little choice but to thank me and such fom the very bottom of his heart inthe status he is in now!
They say what goes around comes around, but sometimes, ULRICH, it seems like some don't get their "comeupance" as we would like, but you never know.
A major TV financial advisor here in the USA says" never, and I mean NEVER, lend or give someone money or goods or services without feeling like you are giving them a total GIFT, as more often then not, they will NEVER repay you"!!!
We have a phrase here "never a lender nor a borrower be". Perhaps that is the best we can hope for.
I figure it this way, if I give a hleping hand, I will feel better about it, regardless of whether somehting good comes back to me!
Chin up, old man! {and I can say that as I am about your age so I are one too!}
Have a great day!

GOOD MORNING!!!
Today is Sunday, December 9th, 2012!!!
Only 16 more shopping days til Christmas!!!
Sometimes, we 'don't have a clue about somehting, SO:
Meaning:
Without any knowledge or understanding
Origin:
This little phrase, which is often given as 'I don't have a clue', doesn't at first sight appear to be idiomatic at all and hardly deserving of investigation. After all, a clue is an insight or idea that points us towards a solution. To be without a clue is simply to be ignorant. However, a clue (also spelled clew) previously had a different meaning - a globular ball formed from coiling worms or the like or, more specifically, a ball of thread. Clew has been used with that meaning for at least a thousand years and citations of it in Old English date back to 897AD, when no less an author than Aelfred, King of Wessex used it in his West-Saxon translation of Gregory's Pastoral Care. Shakespeare also used the word with the 'thread' meaning, for example, in All's Well that Ends Well, 1602:
"If it be so, you have wound a goodly clewe."
That seems a long way from crossword clues or Sherlock Holmes' stories. How did we get from a ball of thread to the current meaning of clue?
Go back to Greek myth and recall the tale of Theseus and the Minotaur. Theseus entered the labyrinth to kill the half-man, half-bull Minotaur. He did so but was only able to find his way out by retracing his path, marked by the string given to him by Ariadne. So, Theseus 'had a clew' about the safe route out of the maze and was able to escape.
Geoffrey Chaucer recorded this story in The Legend of Ariadne, Part VI of The Legend of Good Women, 1385:
Therto have I a remedie in my thoght, By a clewe of twyn as he hath gon, The same weye he may returne a-non, ffolwynge alwey the thred as he hath come.
So, don't be clueless - all you need is some string!
The prayer candles will remain lit today
Have A GREAT day, no, MAKE it a great Day!!!

Janie, just another decaf for me for the moment. May get a piece of the cake later... Birthday? There was a birthday party here yesterday? I have to pay better attention. Well a happy late birthday to whoever it was...
Day one of the RIT Train Show. These kids at RIT put on an excellently run show every year. It has quickly become my favorite show around this area. One of the advisers of the Tiger Tracks Train Club told me they counted over 800 people in the first hour. We had a lot of people stop at the table to watch and ask questions. Every one of the guys who volunteered to do modeling at the NMRA table are both great modelers, and very good people to hang around with, so I enjoyed the day! I didn't get out any of my stuff to work on as there were four other volunteers and room for 4 people to be able to do projects. Tomorrow I should be able to get out something to put together... Will be a Ticky flat car kit.
Car performed beautifully and got me there and back with no problems... I am reminded of my FIL years ago. He was a poor (non-union) plumber that somehow raised 5 children without a much $$$ to go around. His next door neighbor was an employee at Kodak back then and was quite well off. In fact he used to go out and buy (cash) a new Cadillac every other year. He was over at FILs house one night when I was there telling about a long trip they had just taken in the brand spanking new Cadidledeac. FIL listened for some time, took his cigar out of his mouth and said, "I presume you didn't have any car trouble?" Anyway I set the cruise control for 75mph on the way there... meaning most cars were passing me like I was standing still but I was passing a few of the semis along the way. Set it at 70 on the way home as I have gotten afraid of the deer in early night around here. Major road kill this year in NYS. Averaged 51MPG going and 49MPG coming home. Not bad. Very comfortable riding and nice handling as well.
I'll be hanging out in the back for a while. Need to at the show before 9:30 tomorrow and it is an hours drive.
Later!

Absolutely beautiful, this set was totally worth it. the horns just need a touch up because they are molded into the shell. My passenger sets will be the first ones to receive MTL couplers, the set has 2 sleepers, a dome, a full baggage, a diner, and a Heavyweight obs. car. maybe I could buy a couple F's and paint them up like these.
Galaxy - taking care of our elders is, well, let´s use the word challenging. My parents have never been easy folks to be around with. While my father is easy to please, my Mom isn´t at all. She has been brought up, well, very old fashioned, when times for her kin were much better. She comes from a family, which was by today´s means really wealthy. All of that wealth was lost due to the war, but coined here up until today.
I also thought of moving in with my parents, but the price I´d have to pay for that is losing all of my support, and, most important, Petra. I´d have to live off the goodwill of my parents, a terrible thought in my age.
During my student days, I lived at home (I had to). Guess why I finished my studies in the absolute minimum time! Only to be independent. I doubt that I could give that up and stay sane.
ULRICH- sounds a bit like you are facing the similar situation as we are!
They sya the best way to take a driver's license away is to have a DOCTOR ORDER it so! NOT the Police, who over here, don't like to, but a Judge can also order it.
None of us wnat to give upthat precious feeling of freedom when the time comes when we can no longer safely drive.
I thought your parents were well off enough to help themselves in this old age predicacment by paying for their needs . If not, what tyope of public services {free} that they can get? Maybe not much or nothing like here, but thought your government was different!
You could, *AHEM* give up your appartment, save moeny by moving in wiht them and taking care of them *AHEM*. {No? I thought not just like me and MOH don't want to live with my inlaws!} *AHEM* *cough* *Choke* ...
Well,
I have done a few chores but not much. My spainal nerve injections are next TUesday, adn I am nto able to do much now, awaitong the relief the injections will bring. that and all the rain we have had has played havock wiht my back!
well,
later gators
We are safely back from visiting my parents. Driving was OK, the roads were all cleared and enough "salt & pepper" put on them to prevent icing up. It was only the last mile which was slippery and bad (funny, isn´t it always the last mile?).
The visit itself was, say, difficult. While it was good to see them, I also saw that they cannot cope with the daily chores any longer. The cleaning lady they had quit the job, and I have no doubts about her reason. My parents refuse any help. The place was a mess! We took my Mom to town to buy a few things they urgently need, gave the place a cleaning, took the garbage out, prepared lunch and, at last, enjoyed the birthday cake Petra has made for my father. As I wanted to be off the road at dark, we left around 3 pm, which was much longer than we had planned for. Both my parents wee exhausted and so are we.
Frankly, I don´t know what to do. They can´t go on like this, but there is no way I can force them to move. What worries me the most is, that my Mom still drives the car. I am pondering to ask the police to take her license away, before anything bad happens. But without the car, she can´t do the necessary shopping.
I feel so helpless!

Good morning. It's 66° with 98% humidity. There's a fair chance of showers and thunderstorms. The high will be 75°.Weather this morning feels like it's going from partly sunny to miserable. Looks like rain today, clearing tonight, fair tomorrow with rain returning tomorrow night. Wonderful weather we're having! On the layout front, no plans for today but I'll likely have trains running most of the day. I'm looking at an Athearn blue box SD45 shell and having some of THOSE thoughts.

Good Morning!!!
Nothing for me, I just had some red beans and rice. A cup of coffee would be nice though. Thanks.
Ulrich- Might be too late, cause I couldn’t tell whether you’re leaving last night our time, or today…or tonight however that works out. Anyway, drive safe and I get to where I don’t care to drive after dark any distance myself. Winter time sees me calling it a very early evening anymore.
Ray- Sounds like a great car for intown users and livers. (chuckle) Livers. Actually, it does take quite a bit of driving to go 11 miles when in town. Just getting there is where I’d like to shut off the electric part and save it. Highway miles is probably real good even in gas mode. Yah, I knew that 3.5 was for not having gas sit. And I suppose it is possible to not use that much if you drive very little. And I mean very little. Shoot the warm up process and a few assists would use that alone over a year. hm. That still is less than a tank a year. Wow.
I just couldn’t help think how gooooood that sounds from a sales standpoint. “Well sir the fuel usage is….well honestly, and I have to be honest with you here, it really depends on how you drive. (nods head) It really does. No matter what they say, it’s all about you. I will tell you that Toyota recommends you use at least 7 gallons a year at a rate of 3.5 gals every six months. Just to keep it fresh enough to get the best performance. Kinda like a jar of salsa.” Wow. This car really is great. I may not even use 7 gals a year! Thinks the customer. Which is doubtful, but the company can think they might. Oh those crazy Japanese.
Washer and dryer have arrived and are in the basement. They did fit. I waited until she came home for lunch to unload the washer, dryers aren’t that heavy and the washer isn’t real heavy either, but it is a bit in size and the boxes were wet (rain/drizzle that day naturally) so I figured best be safe instead of sor…let’s face it….dead. So Brenda is happy and that means I'm, in the words of Phil Robertson "happy happy".
Today I will remove old and install new. Any bets on how many trips to Menard’s this will take? First one doesn’t count because I didn’t buy HE soap or any new water hoses or flex gas line until I saw where the outlets are on the new. My luck…., they’d be different enough what I bought wouldn’t fit and I’ be taking back anyway. Besides…Brenda will want to go in town anyway, more than likely in the middle of the project, so why not plan on it. That there's smart thinkin.
The longest part will be cleaning area since the old set hasn’t moved for over 15 years. Luckily not quite 20 so I guess it won’t be that bad.
Ladies and gentlemen, Todd has left the building! You can return to your seats and turn your hearing aids back up.
Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!
BamaCSX83I'm still trying to find a way t get the motor and axles connected on the Dash-8 that I have. I'm sure that I'll figure something out, up to and including finding all the components on the bay and ordering them.
Now I know there's somebody out there screaming 'That's impossible!' so here's a couple of photos. Note the long shaft section in the front shaft. It's the one I made with the cut pieces. This loco is in service now.
Mornin gang!
Not too bad outside, they are calling for temps in the 60's this weekend, overcast with occasional spits of rain.
Oh what to do, what to do! The list of projects grows!
The firewood hopper in the basement needs filling,
the grandkids layout needs finishing,
the yard needs raking and leaves chopped, lots of sticks in the yard too (good kindling),
the truck has some new interior panels that need to be dyed and installed,
I need to get to the home to see my Mom (its been too long)
the 2 BL2's need finishing (work I can get paid for),
several of my own engines need finishing and
I'm still trying to wrap my head around XtrkCad!
For now it's coffee, and lots of it! Man I need a 4 day weekend!
Jeremy, from me as well, sorry about the late part!
Hope everyone has a great day I'll stop by later for some dessert, If I'm able!

Today is Saturday, December 8th, 2012!!!
Only 14 more days till the Mayan end of calendar!!!
"Every cloud has a silver lining", SO:
Every bad situation has some good aspect to it. This proverb is usually said as an encouragement to a person who is overcome by some difficulty and is unable to see any positive way forward
John Milton coined the phrase 'silver lining' in Comus: A Mask Presented at Ludlow Castle, 1634
I see ye visibly, and now believe That he, the Supreme Good, to whom all things ill Are but as slavish officers of vengeance, Would send a glistering guardian, if need were To keep my life and honour unassailed. Was I deceived, or did a sable cloud Turn forth her silver lining on the night? I did not err; there does a sable cloud Turn forth her silver lining on the night, And casts a gleam over this tufted grove.
'Clouds' and 'silver linings' were referred to often in literature from then onward, usually citing Milton and frequently referring to them as Milton's clouds. It isn't until the days of the uplifting language of Victori's England that we begin to hear the proverbial form that we are now familiar with - 'every cloud has a silver lining'. The first occurrence that is unequivocally expressing that notion comes in The Dublin Magazine, Volume 1, 1840, in a review of the novel Marian; or, a Young Maid's Fortunes, by Mrs S. Hall, which was published in 1840:
As Katty Macane has it, "there's a silver lining to every cloud that sails about the heavens if we could only see it."
'There's a silver lining to every cloud' was the form that the proverb was usually expressed in the Victorian era. The currently used 'every cloud has a silver lining' did appear, in another literary review, in 1849. The New monthly belle assemblée, Volume 31 include what purported to be a quotation from Mrs Hall's book - "Every cloud has a silver lining", but which didn't in fact appear in Marian, which merely reproduced Milton's original text.
So, NOW, then, "Elvis has left the building":
The show is over - go home
This was announced at the end of Elvis Presley's concerts to encourage fans to accept that there would be no further encores and to go home. It is now used more widely to indicate that someone has made an exit or that something is complete.
Oddly, although the phrase was routinely used to encourage the audience to leave, the first time that it was announced it was to encourage them to stay in their seats. That first use was in December 1956 by Horace Logan, who was the announcer at the Louisiana Hayride show, in which Elvis was a regular performer. Presley had very quickly become very popular with teenagers but had previously taken a regular lowly spot at the Hayride, which was his first big break. He was on the bill quite early in proceedings but after his performance was over and the encore complete, the crowd of teenagers, who weren't Hillbilly enthusiasts, began to leave. Logan announced:
"Please, young people ... Elvis has left the building. He has gotten in his car and driven away ... Please take your seats"
Al Dvorin was the regular stage announcer for Elvis Presley during the 1970s. He picked up the phrase and his version can be heard on several live recordings:
"Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the building. Thank you and goodnight."
The use of this term and the fact that Elvis is probably the most prominent celebrity to be known (despite claims to the contrary) to be unambiguously dead, have given rise to the verb 'to Elvis', i.e. to make a sudden exit.
The Kelsey Grammar sitcom 'Frasier' used a play on the line at the end of each show - "Frasier has left the building."
The prayer candle will be lit all day!
Have a GREAT day!!!
