Evening guys

Been helping my father around getting the engine he sold ready for delivery. He had reserved a small truck for the trip, but the rental company screwed up and he wound up with a large van. At least it has anchors and can haul the beast (418 CID ford with around 650 hp).

Jeff, I'm pretty sure there is some of that left in the garage. I'll try it tomorrow

Ken, Roger that.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Pleases.

Work / Class / Test Font. Classes was over today and I did learn some stuff! One of the things I learned (well all ready knew) is this company if not worth a dam when it comes to passing along important policy changes! Bang Head Won't go into details but has to do with what to do to stop wheel offs!

Test Results. Won't know if I passed or failed for a few days, I will be notified by E Mail, hum? Whistling I have a Company E Mail Address? If I do, it is news to me after being there over a year! Bang Head This company must be owned by BoS!

If I where to bet, I give my self a 80% chances I passed the test. So I am feeling pretty good. Only 3 questions left me with Dunce cap on.

Vince, I will try to tend to the trade question Thursday.

 See you all later.

Any recommendations for grease guys?

For a general lubricant I use Dexron/Mercon transmission fluid. It's plastic safe and doesn't attract a lot of dirt as some oils do. I apply it with a small 1mm wide screwdriver. One drop on the worm, one drop each on the axle gears. The fluid will transfer to any other gears as they turn. At one time I used a plastic compatible bearing grease but found that it would dry and cake up.

Evening guys

Well my lunch date went pretty good. Except for 1 thing. The food kinda sucked and was really expensive. $32 bucks for 2 people?!?!?!

I did manage to finally get my SD7 back together. I just need to install windshield wipers, paint the crew figures and install them, and paint the modified pilot pieces. I hit a snag when I tried to set up the beacon though. Some little bitty electronics bit broke off when I tried to scrape up some loose solder on the pad near it. I tried re-soldering it, but it didn't work. I set the beacon to be on F2 and will have to program the decoder so it's an on-off function (or controlled by F0 or F1 via remapping). It runs well, but is kinda noisy. I looked in the trucks and realized I had cleaned them out earlier. So I need to buy some grease for the gearbox. Any recommendations for grease guys?

Ran the GP7's this morning. No problem with them. The GP35 I run with them however was a different story. It was having pickup problems. A quick examination revealed that the jumper wire from the front truck to the rear truck (left rail pickup) had broken loose from the rear truck. The right rail pickups on the trucks are connected through the frame so no wire there to give me problems. These are Proto 1000 trucks so very similar to Athearn. A fifteen second soldering job fixed the problem and I was able to put the loco back in service. Moving on to bigger things I started in on an ex-UP Atlas FP7 that was in need of a decoder change. It already had an operational decoder in it (Bachmann) but it had no speed table control, therefore I couldn't speed match it. It's going to be used as a trailing unit (behind an F7) so it doesn't need a light. Just so happens I have this Digitrax DZ125 decoder with a burned out light function, so...  I put that into the FP7, did the initial programming then speed matched it to run with my SP Daylight F7A that also has a Frankenstein claim. Would you expect anything less of a loco I own? Stewart AAR trucks. The F7 is a relative lightweight. The FP7 brings the pulling power to the party.

I read a file on a bridge that a local fishing company wanted to raise 2 feet higher than originally built.  The fishing company gathered a favorable signature from every person that lived in the town and presented it to the county engineer.  The county took a vote to raise the bridge 24” and to raise everyone’s property taxes to cover the construction.  The vote failed and the bridge is still at its original height over 100 years later.  About every 20 years the people get together and suggest the bridge be raised higher and every 20 years the vote fails…..

Same old story. Everybody wants it done but when it comes time to pay for it you can hear a pin drop a mile away. And of course there's the same old grousing that it never gets done. Can't imaging why.

Whistling

In many cases it is the original engineering team, who for various reasons fail to use much foresight.

This includes initial costs, speed in which the job must be finished,  cheapness of the administrators and so on, etc, etc.

But it is really too bad as if it is done right in the first place it benefits every ones quality of life and sometimes standard of living.

You get what you pay for,  and then you have to live with it.

Spent about 30 minutes last night just staring at the 1/5 finished, ill-started new layout.  Dispondent, I doodled some new ideas on paper in considering a restart on the whole thing.  Finally, I decided to do my MR thinking when in a better frame of mind.

I decided to be productive before going down to watch a little TV with th' wife and so I handloaded about 20 rounds of 45-70 to go shooting this weekend.

Petting the cats until one fell asleep in my arms while watching some TV, helped sooth the numbed brain.  Amazing how a purring, sleeping cat can sooth the spirit.  They are great empaths.

almost finished with the service station, was playing halo 4 while the glue dried. I suppose I could paint white onto the handrails of my locos currently in service(mostly just my BN ones) and see if I can find any other detail to add to rolling stock. Yesterday I actually looked to see if BN cabeese had white painted on the outer railings. Laugh

Morning guys

I haven't been here in a few, been pretty busy as of late.

Yesterday I went with my father to pick up the crank, flywheel, balancer, connecting rods, and pistons from a machine shop  about half an hour away. When I get it out of the car, I realized that they didn't give me back my pistons. And those are some expensive (SRP for a ford 331 stroker) pistons too. I'll have to go back an get them today or tomorrow since I'm off both of those days. I'm going to probably wait till tonight to see if me or my father can pick them up when we get a rental truck for his trip to Ohio and Minnesota.

Trainwise I haven't really done much. Traded an Athearn (MDC-rehash) SSW PS2 hopper for another accurail autorack. Another Santa Fe Bilevel, and I loaded it with Citations to match the other bilevels I have. I just wish finding 7 of the old bachmann station wagons (to finish out my tri-levels) wasn't so hard. The club finally figured out what they want to do for the christmas show, and since I couldn't find enough MDC high-side thrallgons in BN I decided to just run the autoracks and pig flats.

Jeff, My thoughs go out to your parents. Good call with the use of the decoder of the light function gone whack. I did the something simiar with my Athearn Genesis F45. (stock MRC for sound and lights, DH163 with bad light functions for motor)

Ken, Any word yet on our deal? I got the other locos headed my way. BTW, please don't send me any carp Laugh I hate fish...

In your spare time can you open up some of the hood grilles on top or the sides?

That wouldn't be easy. It's a Zamak alloy Varney F3B shell. I drilled out the portholes last year (they were just blank circles) and cut out the doors on the ends.. I had to be careful as I didn't want to damage the shell. Despite the thickness they have a tendency to break when subjected to a shock.

Today will be primarily spent removing all my carp form the truck and old car.

Ah, I see why you want a new vehicle.

Ah.....  Yes.  Hmmmmmm...  That's what I get for letting my son borrow the truck to tow his boat trailer to go fishing. WhistlingLaugh  Here in Geneva we have a Trout Derby every Memorial day weekend.  We get folks from all over the world to come to little old Geneva for it.  We have some great fishing here.  Now over in Seneca Falls (aka Bedford Falls) they hold a Carp Derby every year not be outdone.  It's a great life... Just isn't the same.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I will have the #2 special, eggs over easy, bacon, home fries and a double order of sourdough toast.  No, no salsa on that, thank you.

Dark gray outside this morning.  May have some partly cloudy fall out of the skies later this afternoon (right around the time I am driving the new toy home from the dealers....).

Son should be here with #2 granddaughter to follow me up to Canandaigua around 11AM this morning.  I am then taking them out to lunch.

Todd, I did some math last night.  Figuring $4 per gallon for gas (yeah I know it is a bit less than that right now but we all know it will go up...), My Truck which is quite good (18 mpg) costs me $.22 per mile for gas.  The Yaris, which is rated at 36mpg (I have averaged 38) costs me $.11 per mile.  The Prius at rated Hybred mode mileage will cost me $.08 per mile.  When run in all electric mode it will be around 3¢ per mile based on my cost per Kw for electricity.  A bit of a difference.  About half my yearly driving is right around here so I should see a good difference in costs.

I better get moving.  Have lots to do before driving the truck to the dealers...

Later!

Jeff,

The wire can't shrink, but if there is enough heat the insulation can and that can scrunch the wire up when the cover shrinks. In your spare time can you open up some of the hood grilles on top or the sides?  J.R.

Good morning. It's 58° with 100% humidity. It'll be cloudy with a chance of rain. The high will be 68°.

I hadn't run a train for quite a while so last night I took a minute to give the rails a quick wipe with a dry cloth then started up a thirty unit freight headed up by my three F unit Frankenlocos and saw immediately that the second loco, the heavy puller was being dragged. A quick examination revealed that the right pickup wire on both trucks was broken. Despite the fact that the trucks were made by different manufacturers (Athearn and Life-Like Proto) the fix was made easily and quickly. It looked as if the wires had shrunk! Is that even possible? Within five minutes the three locos were hauling that heavy train like it didn't exist. Maybe today I'll run the GP7's and GP9's.

Good morning all,

51F and rainy still today. Spent last evening at the museum making a cover frame for the HO and setting up the Christmas village table display. Good to get back there as it had been a while.

Jeff - prayers still for your family as well as those in need.  Geep looks good and used.

Todd - were you going to help Ray clear all those fish? I really though he said he was using fish tanks before not pickup beds?

Lots going on again so I'd better get on with it.    I'll try to drop in later and catch a piece of the action.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and a Strip steak med rare with a portabella mushroom sauce, heavy on the portabella’s please, garlic mashed potatoes, green beans and a salad with Western dressing please, thank you.

Ray- I hope you like the new horse. I figured you’d probably go electric sooner or later now with the solar power grid. Boy talk about thumbing you’re nose at two of the biggest stick-it-to-ya’s in the country!Yes And I also hope you aren’t the one in one million people who have trouble with the lending institution, but I agree 0% is worth even a bit of hassle.

Keith- Yup dog’s still hanging around. As for the layout…well between both Brenda and my Mom’s passing about a year apart and the remodel I been doing for the last year, I haven’t really been in the trainroom othern to drop stuff in there for a loooong while now. But, I’m workin on getting in there directly. Hopefully I will get to spend my winter there. Would be nice.

Jeff- your family is in my prayers bud.  Angel It's a rough time.

Didn’t get to do the office cleaning yesterday either. Imagine that. But I did get the pile of Christmas ornaments/decorations hot glued back together she left for me. We’ll see what transpires today. maybe  the Chinese buffet if I'm in town, but I don't plan to be. Notice I said don't "plan" to be?

We have the elevators Christmas party tonight at some Italian restaurant in Springfield. Right smack downtown. Stupid. Could have had it at the restaurant here in Williamsville, but the girl who set it up (Brenda passed that torch a couple years ago) is young and just loooooves this place. Well it has been around for a long time and is well known but, not really that good to me. It's a name thing. Like buying your jeans from the mall, paying twice as much for the same jeans at Walmart or the farm store, but you can say you bought them at the mall. I’ve been there and was not impressed. Ragu meat sauce out of a jar is as good. Not knocking Ragu, Brenda the Italian uses it and makes it "hers" (referred to by her as "my spaghetti sauce" as in "I like my spaghetti sauce better" or "I make good spaghetti sauce" Whistling Zip it!) by applying a pound of ground beef and a can of mushrooms. Her Grandmother would throw a jar of store bought meat sauce at whoever brought it and purposefuly aim for their head (She was Sicilian you know. Could get a bit ….upset from time to time.). Anyway, I think her Mother used store brand. And Evil Twin who doesn't like any jarred sauce an only really likes hers, adds a bit of salt to Prego. I thinl it's Prego, maybe Barilla. Odd they tout all this Italian heritage, but make a Ragu…shoot, I had to show her how to cook Spaghetti. True story. Had to explain the last letter was an a, not an e. Pasta was near paste when she cooked it. Now meat and potatoes and all that other stuff, stand back. She can do that, but Italian type things….fugetaboutiiiit.

Welp, apparently some lady named Victoria told a secret last night and bumped Ziva off the air so no watchy her today. Might just get something done I need/want to get done.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Tongue TiedWhat’s that in my coffee? Hm. Ray was right. Cilantro and salsa. And not even a good salsa..

Just back from running errands - boy, do I hate that. The world seems to having gone mad. People are buying as if there won´t be anything to buy in a few days. Where does all that money come from? I am glad to be inside again - it´s cold, windy and snowy - yucch!

Gidday All, Rain!!!! Yahoo !!!!!!  Storm.

J.R. boy am I a happy camper, now where near as much rain as forecast, only had 1/4 inch, but grateful for what we've received. There was a fire last evening but the ground crews and the JetRanger took care of that.  Forest floor still dry and the fire risk is still assessed as Very High but with more rain supposed to fall through out the night, the pressure is slightly less as today did not go to plan. Sigh  What's the old saying ? "Time to spare, go by Air".

Currently 2051 hours, 63 F and very light drizzle, so shower and bed for me.

Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.

Cheers, the Bear.

Good Morning!

It´s snowing lightly outside. I hope the roads are OK to drive, I have to run into town to pay a few bills, get some cash (yes, we still pay cash here) and buy some groceries. Petra hates to drive when it is snowing, so that´ll be on my list for the coming days. Need to get some gas, which will be a major expense!

Nothing planned for the rest of the day.

Our son and his GF will join us on the 24th & 25th. Petra is right now working on the holiday menu. Too bad that our son´s GF can´t eat most of what we like.... You kno, we are not really happy with our son´s choice Whistling

Have a good one!

Morning Coffee in the Diner with friends

GOOD MORNING!!!

Today Is Wednesday, December 5th, 2012!!

Only 20 more days of shopping til Christmas Eve!!

Then the fat jolly old Elf comes !!!

How many times have you  wnatedd "a piece of the action"?:

Meaning:

A share in an activity, or in its profits

Origin:

'A piece of the action' has an unambiguously American flavor. It brings to mind images of gangster movies with Jimmy Cagney and the like demanding 'hey, gimme a pieca da action'. When the Star Trek franchise opted for a mobster themed episode in 1968 they called it 'A Piece of the Action'. It isn't essentially a US phrase though and tracing its genesis takes us well outside the USA and into a history of finance.

In the early 1600s, the Dutch came upon an interesting trading innovation - the company. Until then, the spice trade had been profitable but small scale, with spices being brought back from 'the Indies' (broadly what we now call Asia) along the tortuous Spice Road on pack horses. The high price of spices encouraged entrepreneurs to build ships to bring the spices back in larger quantities. There was big money to be made, but the large capital cost of building a fleet and the threat of loss from pirates made it too risky a venture for an individual investor; so in 1602 they formed a company - the Dutch East India Company.

Dutch citizens were invited to invest in the company, which had been given exclusive trading rights to half the world and tax-free status back home. Profits were huge and the clamour to invest was intense. Dirck Bas Jacobsz, one of the company's founders, was instrumental in managing the joint ownership by offering what were then called in Dutch 'acties' or, in English, 'actions'. These were certificates that promised a share in any future profits of the company and what, not unnaturally, came later to be called share certificates. These shares were often purchased by groups rather than individuals. What each of these good citizens had bought was literally 'a piece of the action'.

The term 'action' continued to be used in that context well into the 19th century and   is still so used in Spanish (acciónes) and French (action). It was first recorded in English in John Evelyn's Diary, published between 1641 and 1706:

"African Actions fell to £30, and the India to £80."

'A piece of the action' is certainly a 20th century American phrase. Despite its 1930s mobster overtones, the first use of it that I can find is in the 1957 film Monkey on My Back:

"You want a piece of my action, Sam?"

The 'action' in the phrase means 'a share in an activity; an opportunity'. It is doubtful that whoever coined it in 1950s America knew the history of the Dutch East Indies Company but, knowingly or not, it was the Dutch 'acties' that were the source of that meaning of 'action'.

Prayer candles will be lit while I am home for all those in need!!! Angel
