Afternoon guys
I cleaned my car up in the event one of the girls from work wants me to go with me to a car meet downtown. I found a problem while it was sitting. It was leaking antifreeze, and I found out where. Looks like the old (read: original 20 year-old hose) hose has a small hole in it. I guess that's normal for them to wear out after that long.
I did some more work on the trains. I think I got the last bits of paint off of that LV F3A. Of course it's gonna be a BN F3A. I bought 1k resistors last night for the mini-bulbs for beacons. I just need to buy more beacons and bring my SD45s home so they can lead (I have F45s on both ends at the club)
Ken, I'd say on that SD7 of yours something is binding somehwhere. IDK if this is right or not, but every time I rebuild the trucks on a loco I take it our and remove the worm gear. If it roolls fairly well I'll use if, but if it doesn't I start tinkering till it does. But if you disconnected the driveshafts, maybe it's rubbing on the frame... Are you still using the factory light board in it? Those things have some bad ju-ju about them.
BN #24: Good job on the test
Lee, IDK about the P2K E7. I don't have one. Maybe check the axles to see if they are touching
Vincent
Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
howmus Hi Bill, I live about 20 minutes North of Penn Yan (You might be from Upstate4 NY if you measure distance by time...) in Geneva. I used to have mostly Yamaha and Roland keyboards. They would be considered stone age now although I still have my old Roland keyboard controller that hooks to a rack mount synth via MIDI. I really need to get out the axe and get some stuff back in my fingers... Spent a small fortune on it (Cordoba) and so far it has mostly just sat in the case... Somehow being deaf has its drawbacks. Later! 73

My daughter bought herself a BRAND NEW Yahama Pro trumpet a couple of years ago to replace her aging Bach one that she pretty much played out. Anyway, I think she's played it once or twice since she bought it. This is the woman who has a BMus and played from the time she was in grade 5 right through University. Now she doesn't seem to want to play... even with the new horn.
I wonder what I paid for all those private lessons for and 4 years of University. Durned kids.

Hello, Diners!
47f and rainy/misty.
Good job on the test, BN!
Nice guitar, Ray. Used to play a Rickenbacher bass in a blues band , myself. Loved it! Started out on a Fender guitar, but there were too many strings!
PFC Son called his wife( DIL) last night, so far so good. He was "promoted " to SAW gunner. Still says "It'll be the most boring in the history of boring missions"!! Hope so.
Not much on the MRR front, been trying to get the new roof on the remodel I'm doing. Almost there, if the rain will hold off 1 more day.
I've been following the "thread" ( wink, wink, nudge, nudge) out on the forum. Interesting. Why some open ,then read something they have no interest in is beyond me. If it's not up your alley, don't open it.
Jeff, what's the progress report on the Grain Mill? Life gettin' in the way, sounds like.
That's about it from here. Sure hope we don't get the white stuff our NOTB diners are talkin' about. Too soon!!

Another hard day. Shanghaied again! My father called this morning to have me come down to help him test the saw. One board told us the one rip fence wasn't going to be enough as the area of table top isn't very big. So we put on a second fence on the opposite side of the blade to act as a guide. We cut another board. That worked much better! Then he wanted to make sure that wasn't just a lucky shot. A third board was cut then three boards turned into two dozen boards! That's not even half! I have to hold these big long boards up and feed them to the blade. It's only when they're six or seven feet across the table that I get a break. At that point the table is supporting the weight then my father is supporting the weight as he pulls it from the other side. My balance isn't all that great so I have a hard time with it so naturally it tires me out rather quickly. I had to remind him that it's a bit more than a quarter century since I was twenty-five and he may enjoy these kid games but I don't. I can't be on my feet for very long. If he wants help with cutting six or eight boards that's fine. But a dozen or more is too much. Another job was taking an old B&D circular saw apart and fixing it. It runs now but I have no idea for how long. It could go down after a few minutes or it could work for another ten years. He has to work tomorrow so it looks like I'll get a break. Brother, do I need it! My knees and back are screaming.Well, time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow, if I bother to get out of bed.
Evenin' folks!
Janie, I'll have a cup of decaf with cream and Stevia. Thank you Ma'am.
Other than a few minutes of putting down some grass and such on the mountain project, I didn't see the train rooms today. We got 1.09 inches of rain here today. I am pleased to tell all of you we didn't get any snow in the last 24 hours according to the weather channel... I do wish the tree next door would give up and drop its leaves so a bit more sun when it decides to shine would hit my roof. Leaves are getting very yellow so it should be soon. The one across the street is just starting to turn so it should take a bit longer.
Spent most of the day cleaning my bedroom. The dust dinosaurs were very large and menacing. I removed and threw away old bedspreads and clothing I haven't used in a decade or so that were piled on the floor, picked up and moved a couple huge boxes of old Boy Scout patches, programs, and other stuff I saved ..... Ah, just because I guess. Those items are now taking up space in another room so when I clean that one I can move it back to sitting in the corner of my bedroom I guess. Still have to clean off the dresser so I can find the nice wood finish it used to have, and dust a lot of the tops of stuff off. But.... I feel like I made progress. Whatever that is.
I have been following the comments in the, ah, thread out in the main forum. You know the one. The one about why we all don't like the forums but still come here anyway and stuff... I keep having that wonderful old 1932 Groucho Marks song going on in my head. "Whatever it is, I'm against it!"
I guess I will call it a night. Prayers for all in need!

GOOD MORNING!!!
It's not worth a plugged nickel or the paper it's written on...
Origin and meaning for nickel:
Plugs are the holes made in coins, which is then filled with a cheaper metal. Coins so tampered with are no longer legal tender and are thus worthless if spotted. The phrase is, of course, American. Before 'plugged nickels' there were 'plugged quarters' and 'plugged dimes'. The various versions of the phrase appear in the 1880s. The nickel, being a lower denomination coin, lends itself better than quarters and dimes to a phrase expressing worthlessness. Oddly though, the lowest denomination coin is the cent and the phrase 'not worth a plugged cent' doesn't appear until later. The earliest I've found for that is 1908.
The earliest of any version of the phrase that can be found is from The Daily Nebraska State Journal, 14th September 1883. This indicates the illegitimate nature of plugged coins:
"No," said a Philadelphia conductor, "I never attempt to pass a plugged quarter on a man unless he's got his Sunday girl with him. Then he's afraid she'll think him mean if he get's mad. PAPER: It's not worth the paper it's written on. Worthless. Good Morning!!!
Coffee and a piece of cherry PIE please. Make that two thank you. Whoa, whoa, whoa! Careful there. Don’t touch me Flo, after four days of cabbage soup, I’ve got a hair trigger.
Wife will either make enough food for a snack for one and feed it to two (similar to if she’s on a diet so am I but it’s she’s not that hungry), or she’ll make enough for twenty and we eat it, or should I say I eat it daily because she juuust doesn’t care to eat the same thing more than once a week. Of course this is the same woman who can’t stand the taste of coconut or dark chocolate, but her favorite candy bar is, get this, a Mounds. “It’s not the same”.
Well, gonna watch Ziva then do some more things around here. If the grass is dry enough (read leaves) I’ll mow, but last night at w**k I was asked to w**k for someone tonight and I said I would so…... I’m not complaining, there are people all over the world who’d love to have even the part time job I have.
(picks up chain saw and walks to the door) Huh? What’s that Flo? Uhhhh…, oh nothing. I just like carrying a chainsaw around. Say um, by the waaaay, just out of curiousity, where’s this Finger Lakes place?
Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Chochowillie, be careful using those 4-letter words in your posts there are moderators all over the place in the diner. I can’t believe you got away with: S**W continues over most of southern Alberta….. LOL.
Actually I’m looking forward to a good dumping of S**W so I can focus on train stuff. All this fair weather is keeping me from the basement and MR projects are piling up….
Ray, I see in your “local TV news” the Hojack is coming down.
I’m also impressed people are still complaining about the switch in forums. My only issue is its not very reverse compatible with older versions of Internet Explorer. As you can see in yesterdays post it ran everything together on me.

Good morning. It's 67° with 100% humidity. We have patchy fog. It's a wonder everything isn't soaked! It'll be partly cloudy with a high of 85°.I'm still sore and stiff from yesterday. I think today I'll just rest and take it easy. No layout work planned but you never know.
The tickling frog in my throat is still there. Copy cat anme brand expectorant is working, but seems to be never ending.
Went grocery shopping. Spent $120.00.
I am still trying to track down medical coverage tat might be cheaper than what they increased my secondary to Quadrupling it HURTS..
Definitely need new glasses...can't hardly read the computer screen much and the TV to computer and back again leaves everything fuzzy. I have put them off for 3 years as MOH needs to have new glasses to read things like coupons and UPCs at work, so we haver concentrated on MOH's glasses, and I have let mine go, I am also getting headaches..not migraines but headaches that I think are glasses related. Now I have to get them ..
**ANYBODY know of the supposed websites where you can get glasses for like $10.00 if you enter your script and then select the frames? is it real? are they good or bad? Do they last or are they el cheapos? Comments would be appreciated.***
Now for a nap, then to the free bread down the street, and then to argue with the insurance company reps. this afternoon.

I am worn out! Like Jeffrey, I think I will just hang and nap...

Zoe, I'll have the #2 special, over easy eggs, bacon, home fries, and a double order of sourdough toast... Leave the strawberry preserves, and make sure you have lots of dark roast coffee brewed. Thank you Ma'am.
Todd, you coming over to help me with the firewood? How nice...
Lee, yes the Bridge is coming down... We have a couple "Preservationists" out at the museum who are all up in arms about it. "We have to act right now to save it!!!" Most of us out there just nod our heads, and then when the guy walks away say something like, "I guess he would rather have it just fall down by itself..."
Galaxy... Glasses for under $10??? LOL What do you think? Probably $10 for the poorly made glasses and $99 for shipping and handling.
Another gray, gloomy day here in the Finger Lakes (Central NY basically between Rochahchah and Sorrycuse. Just look on the map of NYS and you will find a bunch of long narrow lakes that look like, ah...., fingers). Currently 55°F with a high later this afternoon of 62°F.
Guess I will go back to cleaning house... Doesn't THAT sound like fun?
LSWRR Yup, *S**W is defiantly one of those 4 letter words. and since I just got in from shoveling 6 inches ofthe white stuff off the walks and cleaning the SUV off (scrape scrape, brush brush) I found a few other choice words to use as well
This is way way too early for this stuff even here in AB. A bunch of the mountain ski resorts are opening this coming weekend....
Anyone in need of cooling down, I'll gladly send you a truckload or two!!
Have to take MOH to the DR to day for her yearly check up that is a year overdue.
Latter all.
Morning All,
Barbara's getting better took a nose dive Monday night. Started bleeding again. I got call from the hospital around 0600, she was back in CICU. When I got to hospital her BP was 80/40 heart rate was 168, and in a lot of pain. At about 1000 nurse supervisor said I should call my daughters and they should be at hospital. Scared me a bit with that comment. They sedated her, pet her on a ventilator, punped 8 units of blood in her and several meds. By the time we were comfortable leaving around 8:30 her BP was 116/84 heart rate was 95, bleeding stopped. Blood counts were good. I did not hear from hospital yet so I am assuming everything is still OK. 3rd round of Chemo is now delayed 2 weeks.
Galaxy - I bought a pair of glasses from Glasses USA they were pretty good for the price. Try them out. You will need your RX to send them.
Off to the hospital.
Prayers to all in need.

Good Morning everyone!
It's been another busy week having to run the museum every day except Monday right now. I did take yesterday off and drove down to Punxsutawney for the B&O RR retirees luncheon. I took a couple of friends, a retired B&O engineer who started on the B&O in 1948, and a retired B&O track foreman who hired out in 1946. I heard some great stories on the drive down and back. We had about 50 retirees there.
Ken, I looked for photos of the Washington Indiana yard for you in the B&O RR H.S. newsletters, and couldn't find any, so I googled it, and guess what's in the newest edition! So, if you google B&O Washington Indiana, I'll bet you will be surprised at the photos they have.
Ray and Lee, being involved with railroad history as I am here, I can understand to a point about the wishes of preservationists. But knowing the difficulty of saving classic structures such as old bridges, I've given up on worrying about what can and can't be saved. When they tore down the old B&O backshops at East Salamanca, I decided it was just going to have to happen whether I liked it or not! I'm glad for what has been preserved, and I'm glad I had a chance to see the things I was lucky enough to see when before they were gone. I guess that's another great thing about Modeling, you can recreate a little history if you wish.
I've been working with the Allegany State Park Historical Society to cover the old Pennsy Salamanca Branch on their Facebook page, and some great shots of the line have been turning up! Here's PRR 4454 passing the station and water tower at Quaker Bridge NY as it looked in 1950:
This is now all gone, and the place is under water in the summer when the Kinzua Dam floods the region.
Well, I got sidelined with some museum visitors and It's after noon now, so I'll finish up.
Have a great day!
-Stan
I thought that you guys at the dinner may enjoy this...
Being a physician, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.
I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer.
I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure as they felt that Shane might learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him.
Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.
The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion.
We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."
Startled, we all turned to him.
What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.
He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?"
The Six-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:
may he rest in peace, I fear the day when my dogs pass.
well, I've got the MTl's installed and am currently repainting my Bach. Spec. Dash 8-40cw # 24
John Reid- that was a wonderful dog story. I especially liked the last part, of course. The first thing it says there is to run and greet when someone comes home. We don't have a dog, but rather a cat. Since I am "retired" I am usually at home when MOH {My Other Half} comes home form work. I holler out to our cat that MOH is home loud and clear in hopes of getting our {lazy} cat to come running, which he does often. We {the cat and I} get all excited when MOH comes home when he {the cat} shows up from his nap on the bed!
Our Cap has the "nap daily" routine down pat, too...and exercise- {romp run and play} well he races through the house a lot. They say a pet cat cam run up to 35 MPH, and We think sometimes he comes close to that!!!
He enjoys all the "pettums" we give him.
He's a house cat so he's not fond of going out, and we don't encourage that, either. And he HATES car rides.{especially going to the V-E-T}.
Evening has arrived. Sun is setting sooner {I know, no duh}. The LED light strings down the long dark hall are blue white and have a "strobing effect" to them...we are still trying to get used to. I wonder if the colored LED string lights {Christmas style} do the same? I wonder if the $35 LED bulbs that last "22 years" will do the same?
temps near 70 again tomorrow.....is it really the end of October? Not complaining mind you as supposed to be only near 50s end of 7 days planning. We have to get the porch plastic up. Not quite ready for the plastic A/C cover yet, but getting closer..actually had the A/C on for a few hours today as it got warm in here. The one in the BR will stay until about end of Dec. as the O2 machine I use creates heat..a lot of it.
I DID find the cheap eye glasses site. they have some for $5 or $10, but most are in the $11-$29 range and up, of course. I don't know if I will use them or not..I don't really need a new frames...but my frame less glasses can't be traced easily while I keep my frames waiting for the script lenses at Sam's club. I may have to resort to my old off pair to get the new lenses installed. Sam's can now trace your lenses, send that off with the script and you keep wearing your old pair until new lenses come in and then they install the new lenses while you wait. that is what MOH did last time. I definitely need new lenses...All glasses must have the flex frame sides for me. I have stabbed myself in the eye with ones that don't have that feature!
Well, time for night meds and soon to bed.
have a great evening guys!
Good evening all,
One degree short of a record high here today (84 degrees in late October). Made for nice weather to plant iris and paint some wood trim.
Had lunch with some professional colleagues that I hadn't seen in 20 years. Lots of fun catching up but I'm the only one of the three of us who's working, even if it is part time. Although I feel bad for them, it did confirm the wisdom of moving on from the profession we used to be in together.
The mailman brought me the new wheels I ordered for my synthesizer case. Not quite user-replaceable, but with the right tools and ample patience they're installed. My back will thank me on Sunday.
A piece of apple pie with ice cream and a coffee sounds good right 'bout now. Have a splended evening.

Flo, pleases and I will buy around as well.
Today sucked but I got some good news as well.
Suck Part, Work Front. There a shocker right! Worked to day a little with Scott (manager of the store I am helping out at) and lets just say his Human Skills are truly lacking! I won't go in to details because it would be deleted because of the word content. I will go out and help Friday, but after that they will have to fire me if they tried to make me go there again! I now know why he cannot keep help!
Good Part You ask? Got the results from my latest HGA1C test today. My last test showed my A1C at 7.8. My latest test came back A1C came in at 5.9%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With the following note. You have very good control of your diabetes! Keep up the good work! When I am the VA Hospital Thursday to see my surgeon I will take the time to look up a Certain Nurse that gave me some diabetes training, show here my results and give her a BIG HUG! Besides, she is cute anyway.
Paul Sorry to hear Babara took a turn for the worst. Hope your family gets some great news soon. You derisive it!
John While the thoughts of your post where great, I all most wish you had not posted it. Shaddy our (Irish Wolfhound) is 9 and my wife and I know her time is near.
We had to let Tiffany go last year on October 20th after 17 years of love.
Then there was Red Sonya, my first Irish Wolfhound.
I lost her at a mere 8 years old and I still when I think of her. The picture is of Sonya,Tiff and I together.
Tiffany helped raise 2 Wolfhound Pups, she was a tuff little dog! Gave them both heck!
Hum, cats live longer? Guess they don't learn to love as quickly as dogs!
Rainbow Bridge
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Cute little dog. Lots of love there!
Well, since we now have 6+ inches of s**w laying around, and it's going to stay, I was looking at the R R Room after supper and sort of trying to see if my minds eye idea for the yard area is going to w**k. Here is a look at the existing area:
My idea is to raise the whole area up about 3" and extend the yard about 2 1/2 feet toward the lower Left hand of the picture. I would still have a 24" space for access/maintenance and it would sure make for a much bigger yard.
Hi Gang,
I have been checking in on you all thru the drive in window by the kitchen here in the diner, but haven't posted as have been busy visiting and touring around.
We've been here in Springfield, Missouri for a week now and will leave for home in another week as I have to be back at work on Nov. 03.
Took in some shows in Branson last Friday and we are going back tomorrow for a few more. Might as well do that when we are here rather than come all the way just for that.
Really great to get to share some time with our son as he had a little of a school break but is back at it now. He says he only has 21 weeks to Graduation and can't hardly wait to get this Grad school finished. That means we will have another visit down here in the spring for that Grad.
They have had some snow back home but it has all melted now. Alberta still is in a white wonderland though. This visit has sure extended our fall for us though. really the right time for a visit here.
Great dog pix, we enjoyed them and JohnReid that was a great story, out of the mouth's of babes...
Sending prayers and blessings to all the members and their families who stand in need. there sure are a lot of us in that position lately.
Special wishes for Ulrich and Paul's wife.
Of course I have picked up some MR goodies while here. Had two packages waiting for me, one from Walther's and one from Dallas Model Works. Added some real collectables to my Hot Wheels collection. I only collect proto-type cars and trucks but only ones that don't have silver (chrome) interiors. I did run across a cab over Ford 9000 truck with a farm stake body on it, and of course nabbed that as well.
We have some civic elections back home tonight, so I'll sign off and see if I can pick that up off the web to listen to the returns. It interests me as I work City Council Meetings every month and know most of them.
Happy Rails to all, will try and get back in again before heading home.
Johnboy out................................for now
from Saskatchewan, in the Great White North..
We have met the enemy, and he is us............ (Pogo)
Good Evenin'
Had a good day inspite of the anxiety over what was found...hopefully it turns out to be an 'artifact' of the process of taking the XRay....
On the dog stories...I think JohnReid's post hits the nail right on the head...the list is being saved here to be posted later on in our house..we have a Spring who is very much like that...
