Toto, follow the Yellow Brick Road to

Morning coffee in the Diner

GOOD MORNING!!!

Holler ween is coming up, ghost and gobblin and witches, OH MY! Be afraid, be very afraid. SO:

Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid"

Meaning: Ostensibly, a warning that something dangerous is imminent. In reality, this is usually said with comic intent. The thing being warned of is more likely to be mildly unwelcome than actually dangerous; for example, "That fierce librarian was asking about your overdue books - be afraid, be very afraid."

Origin:This phrase originated in the 1986 horror film The Fly, written by the Canadian  David Cronenberg and starring Jeff Goldblum (as Seth Brundle) and Geena Davis (as Veronica Quaife). The shortened expression 'be very afraid' was already in use in the USA prior to 1986; for example, it was used in the television series All My Childrenin 1970.

The plot of The Fly has Brundle as a scientist experimenting with teleportation. The scientist is brilliant but eccentric and, naturally, the casting director thought of Goldblum. Just as naturally, before we get far into the film, the experiments begin to go wrong.

Quaife is a reporter working on the teleportation story. When it becomes clear that Brundle is starting to turn into an insect, he pleads with one of the characters "don't be afraid" and  Quaife's response is:

"No. Be afraid. Be very afraid."

This was used as a tag line in the film's publicity posters. They also used, "Half man, half insect ... total terror!" and "Something went wrong in the lab today... something very wrong". David Cronenberg, George Langelaan and Charles Edward Pogue were the writers on the film, with the storyline being provided by George Langelaan.

It is the imagery of portentous warnings from the Bible and literature that the film's screenwriters called on to give weight to the line; for example, Shelley's sonnet, Ozymandias:

"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"

There are many similar examples from the Bible, including Isaiah 32:11-11 (King James Version):

"Tremble, ye women that are at ease; be troubled, ye careless ones ..."

Of course, 'be' and 'afraid' are common enough words to have appeared together many times before that, as in Macbeth, 1605:

I will not be afraid of death and bane, Till Birnam forest come to Dunsinane.

For the use of 'be afraid' as a stand-alone warning, we go back to the Bible. In Romans 13:4-4, in the King James Version, we find:

"For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil."

Twenty years has been long enough for the phrase to have been taken into the language, and it is now well enough established to have the shortened form of simply 'be afraid'.

The Prayer Candle is lit for those in need, and an extra candle lit specifically for the forum members here with issues.

Good morning. It's 62° with 100% humidity. It'll be mostly sunny with a high of 88°.

I hope to do some cleanup work on the layout today. I don't quite know where to begin. Maybe if I start with one thing it'll lead to another. Also need to get tractor and trailer up here to cart off the pieces that were ripped out of the kitchen cabinet. That's all piled up outside. I should be able to get it all in one load and take it down to the burn pile.

Good Morning all,

49F, Hi today 72F, Low 59F

I spent most of the weekend fixing the yard and the sidewalk. Tonight I should be able to take the police tape down….

I did go to the Norwalk and Western Train show in Lorain, OH yesterday.  Mostly B&O RR items with some PRR and NW items available it’s interesting that different areas around here have different RR preferences. The Lorain, OH show B&O is popular and the most expensive, you travel to the Youngstown Show and PRR is popular and expensive, the Cleveland Show NYC is popular and expensive, Kirtland Show NKP is popular and expensive, and the Sandusky Show N&W is popular and expensive.  Not sure why since B&O, C&O, NYC, PRR, W&LE, NKP, LS&MS, and N&W ran through all of these towns in the past.

I let Katje out this morning and she ran back inside and hid in her kennel and wouldn’t come back out.  I couldn’t find anything in the back yard that would spook her; I mean really, she is a puppy and curios about everything so I guess there was something instinctively scary outside this morning.

Ulrich, respiratory issues are the worst; I hope you’re feeling better.

Ray, due to OSHA regulations only one person can ride my caboose at a time unless I install handrails and safety belts….

Todd, gnats or drain flies?  Drain flies look like they have a half circle cut in their wings near the body and the only thing I’ve found to kill the eggs is bleach.

Curt did you get the K-9 cattle car?

Jim, the City of Cleveland owns and operates the water and sewer in my town so dealing with the City will not help.  I went out there and fixed everything the best I could this weekend.  I will be asking someone why I pay more for sewer and water than I do for Natural gas now.  Last 12 months I paid $560 for Natural Gas and $618 for water/sewer.  2011 I only paid $240 for water/sewer and I complained about that.

Seamonster, I have a savings account with a Credit Union, but I hate to inform you that all Credit Unions are sponsored by a regular bank.  I had an issue paying for internet service in the 90’s and found out the CU processed everything then turned it over to the parent Bank who actually transferred the funds to the internet provider and things got really messed up.  I do think customer service is better with most CU’s but there are some really messed up CU’s out there.  I had an account with a CU in Texas and I bounced a check.  I immediately fixed the issue and paid the NSF penalties but the parent bank (Bank of America)  put me on the bad check writer list and made a bad comment on my Credit Report then 10 years later I had to get a lawyer to have it removed to open a checking account in Ohio when I transferred.  The crazy thing is it was the first time in 15 years I ever bounced a check and they went to General Quarters over a $15 bounced check.

Ken, Life-Like/PK 1000’s had an issue for 2 years where the wheels were defective on their locomotives and rolling stock.  Somehow the wheels were cracking and causing the wheels to go out of gauge and squeal or constantly derail.  When LL was bought out by Walther’s they stopped replacing the 1000’s wheel issues.  One of the members of my train club bought a bunch of PK 1000’s and has been slowly changing all the wheels out with Intermountain replacement wheels.  It’s sometimes hard to see the cracks but if you spray them with developer you can see them.

Curt, I was TAD to the Navy as a Tactical Law Enforcement Team so that’s why I was on so many different ships.  Normally it was 60 days out 3 weeks home 60 days out for 3 years.

Bill, don’t know where you’re from but if you are in the US check this out:  https://www.usajobs.gov/

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and  a sweet roll please. Thanks

Different day, same stuff. No need to say more. ( Laugh )

Checked the status on the tile this morn. Seems as if it shipped early. Status shows it is in transit to the springfield store. Best get ready as when it shows I’ll be grounded until it’s done.

Laundry is for all practical purposes doneWow so it looks like if the weather is good like it’s supposed to be, or at least like they said yesterday, I’ll mow the yard. I’ve really been itching to get in the trainroom, but been putting it off until these other things are done. Lots to do in there. Oh my is there lots to do before I can even think about resuming any actual progress. But, because of my New Years resolution about finishing projects I start (and so far so good on that oneThumbs Up, but not so good on the smokingThumbs Down) I don’t want to get started in there because I know what will happen. Other things will suffer. I don’t even check out WPF anymore because it stirs up the desire to get back to it.

Welp, best get to the Church and do the bookwork. Then back to the shower and I have to cut down the black raspberries and the peonies I haven’t cut down. And somewhere in there….maybe go see my Chinese girls.Laugh Haha. Went to another Chinese restaurant yesterday at noon othern the buffet. We've been there a couple times and it is excellent food. The waitress is Vietnamese though and speaks perfect English so beins how she’s probably about 20 she’s never seen Vietnam othern pictures I bet. Unless she is like a friend of mines wife who took extra classes to speak almost void of any accent. Anyway, I made the comment that though she is a good waitress, the Chinese ones at the buffet are better even though you can’t understand most things. Brenda says no, you just like them because they cater to you. I said my point exactly. She said she thinks we’ll take a break from the Chinese buffet for awhileLaugh. Then she said this place isn’t looking good either, did you notice she offered to refill your drink but not mine. I said your imagination. She said no, we both had half full glasses, she asked to refill your Mr Pibb, but didn’t my tea. I said, you still had a ¼ glass when we left. You didn’t need a refill anyway. She said it doesn’t matter to which I said, maybe not but what does matter is, I’m polite to them. You are…., how do I say…demanding and blunt. I don’t care what race, religion, language they speak or gender they are, they are human beings, not new privates in the Army. It’s just as easy to be nice as any other way and you see the result. Even works at the Walmart. People want to be treated nice and with some respect and they naturally, with some exceptions, will respond like in kind. EVEN…if they don’t know what you’re saying. A smile and the word “Hi” is universal. Oh, and when they bring you something, just like the guy at the Red Lobster, they also understand the words “thank you”. They like that too. You can tell by the kinda half shy smile they get when they say welcome. Probably also why they "always keep an eye on our table" as you say, or come running up as we’re leaving and waive saying “Thank you bie bie”. Because I respond “your welcome bie bie and thank you if they waited on us.” NOT, and I know I joke about it, because I want to take one home. Though it would be nice, I mean it worked so well on “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father”. Besides, I don’t think they would anyway. We don’t have a rice cooker. Unless you want one for Christmas.  Well I’ll tell you what. I regretted the last few remarks as soon as I said it BUT, went to the Walmart and all was well. No silent treatment, no short words, all was normal. And when we got home, she dug through her recipe books, made a pot of Cabbage soup, a batch of oatmeal raisin cookise and a batch of molasses cookies and Ooooohhhhh they were good.

Which reminds me, here…..brought in a passel of each. Cookies that is.

Getting darker and just heard a little thunder. Sunny day may have hit a roadblock. Might not be mowing.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Really Lee !? I only assume they have wings only because they're flying around.Laugh

No seriously, you're probably right on drain flies. I'm usually kinda nervous about dumping bleach down any drain Brenda has access too. Well me too I guess. Usually a good sink full of dish water and a good rinsing with hot water does the trick real quick. But this time no. Saw somewhere where they said Oine-sol, but brenda uses Lysol so I figured cleaner was cleaner. I'll give it a day or two and then may use the bleach if they don't leave.  (after a real good flushing of course) Thanks.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a nice bnowl of hot oatmeal w/ brown sugar, a couple sausages, and lots of dark roast coffee (Seneca Lake Blend would good) in a R&GV RR mug.  Please and thank you Ma'am...

Been sunny outside here in the Finger Lakes this morning.  The weather prognosticators say it is Partly Cloudy which means it will be cloudy just as soon as the sun shine goes around the stupid Maple tree next door which doesn't want to loose any of it's now bright yellow leaves yet and hits the solar panels...

Not sure what all I will do today as I have some bookwork to get done for the MLK Meeting tomorrow night,  a few phone calls to make, and groceries to buy.  Would also like to go get the 4x4's I will use to create the raised vegetable gardens out back.  Need to do some house cleaning like some others on here, and would very much like to find some time to spend in the train room as well.  We shall see...

Ken, did you here about way back in 1972 the famous Classical Saxophone player  Sigurd Raschér was going to perform on live TV (PBS) a concert with the Philadelphia String Quartet?  Everything was set to go, the concert had been well publicized and it was estimated that 7 million people would be tuning in for the "one of a kind" concert.  Unfortunately, a group of concerned parents petitioned the TV station against the broadcast and the concert was cancelled just a few days before it was to air....  Yep!  They said there was already too much  (are you ready?)  Sax and Violins on TV!

(Gulps rest of coffee quickly and heads out the door!)

Later!

Curt, the stock car you said you bought with sound, were those PRR K-9‘s?

Todd, those drain fly eggs are typically well protected against soap, even Lysol or pine oil.  Bleach is about the only thing that will penetrate the eggs and kill the larvae.  You should leave the bleach in the trap overnight then flush it out in the morning with cold water.

Did you know for killing germs and surface virus Bleach is #1, but did you know Pine Oil is #2.  For those of us in the military who had to scrub a head (or for you grunts a latrine) pine oil was our weapon of choice.   I would have addressed the USAF guys but they just hire contractors to do that kind of work, LOL…

Tomorrow we go to a  seminar about a health plan and train nut friend is going to, hes in similar/same boat.

So much for my plans this morning! My father called shortly after I posted. He needed me to come down and put together a power miter saw for him. That took the better part of an hour. I swear the man couldn't close an umbrella without instructions that were typed in triplicate, lost, found, sent out, queried, sent back, put on public display then buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as fire lighters before new instructions were issued. He then wanted me to set it up so it could rip sixteen foot 2x6's. I had to explain to him that that couldn't be done with that type of saw. He then described a saw he had used years ago to do that sort of thing and that it was very similar to this one. I then had to explain to him that what he had used was a radial arm saw and that this model miter saw could NOT be made to be used in that fashion. It's virtually impossible! We then spent the rest of the morning rebuilding a twenty-five plus year old home made table saw (70's era Skilsaw bolted underneath a homemade plywood table saw deck complete with 2x2x16" rip fence) that's bolted to the top of an old Steelcase office desk. We, rather I, got it working and I put a good blade on it. Some of the blade mounting hardware was missing and we had to cobble together a replacement. The blade is on as tight as I could get it. The saw has safeguards that are more than sufficient to stop a runaway blade should that occur. Still, we're both going to be standing back when the first couple 2x6's are pushed through. It may work, it may not. The blade may stop dead as a hammer when it hits the first board. But that won't be today. After that we got cleaned up a bit, collected my mother from the couch (yes she's back home holding the couch down) and we went to town for a late lunch then to a lawyers office to sign over the house to the new owners. Got back home about an hour ago and I'm completely wiped! Working on the layout or anything else for that matter is the farthest thing from my mind! I hurt all over and could care less if the walls fell down.

Evening guys

Not a whole lot doing today. didn't really feel like doing much of anything.

Ken, As far as the rolling stock I'm looking for, I don't even know. It would depend on what you have. So it would probably work better if I knew what you have you'd wanna swap for.

Now my P2K SD7, not likely i'll let that one go. It's been custom painted and detailed for BN. What's wrong with your SD7? I've had my SD7 and 2 SD9s apart a few times so I know what makes them tick. I'd like to find other P2K SD7/9s (or BLIs or RPP shells and chassis) to build up a few more for BN. If you decide to off-load that SD7, I could work it in a trade.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Did I miss something, Are your parents giving up their beloved house, or is it another house you are talking about?

Prayers for those in need...Angel

I am sore as rain/Storm Umbrella is coming tomorrow..looks nasty.  MOH is sore also... BUT 70s are coming for the end of the week!!!

Tomorrow I will stop and get some other new info on health care plans, besides the planned thingy we are doing with our friend. MOH is trying to find out what is available through work that we turned down when MOH had other coverage. We may have to eat the quadrupled insurance cost as it does cover both of us and may be cheaper than other plans. SO far all MOH could find online is coverage to pay bills for " catastrophic illness, accidents, or to cover bills while recovering from illness {like AFLAC or maybe it IS AFLAC}", BUT not for general health insurance..maybe they don't offer it? They should..somewhere as they offered it 2 years ago, but maybe this is all they were offering? SO confusing giving me/us a headache.

MOH is off tomorrow and if it is not raining, we put up plastic to cover the damaged corrugated plastic covering the porch.

You know we got a huge new deal without cable company and there are some 250-300 channels..and nothing we either: want to watch, haven't seen before, is  a new theme on a subject we have already knowledge of, or anything to entertain us! Remeinds me of the old song "...57 channels and nothing on.."

OH..in 2 weeks we turn clocks back for those who do that in the USA..just a heads up- consider yourselves forewarned!

CAn't believe Christmas stuff is out already, has been for 3 weeks at Wally World.... Holler weenie isn't here yet. Ghosts and gobblins were out before  LAbor say weeekend!

well, we may call it a night early

Evening All,

Did the MRI today and I was surprised how little the unit was.

I called the Doc's office to find out where the paperwork was that I should of received last Fri. I finally got hold of the lady around 2 PM and she says I mailed it today. I'm not real happy but OK, I will have it in a day or two. A hour later  she calls and says I need to make sure our dates are the same for the paperworkAngry I hate being lied to. So it will go out tomorrow and I will see it by Friday.

My lights came in today. They have a Black and Red wire that comes out of the light pole. I need to solder the provided resistor to one of the wires. I assume it should be the red wire that it goes on. Is this correct before I solder the resistors on the wrong wire?

Paul- Glad your wife is doing better.

Hope everyone has a good night and prayers for those in need.
